Modern Day Assassin's Creed Game Doubtful, Return of Connor Unlikely

Ubisoft held a Reddit AMA overnight which threw up a few interesting titbits about the future of Assassin’s Creed.

First up is the fate of Assassin’s Creed III protagonist Connor, who lead writer Darby McDevitt says is “not very” to return for futures games.

On the subject, Ubisoft Community Developer Gabe Graziani added, “Better to tear the bandaid off straight-away than to pull it slowly, my friends.”

Connor followed in the footsteps of original AC star Altaïr, as well as ACII, AC: Brotherhood and AC: Revelations protagonist Ezio Auditore, but failed to make the same impact with fans.

No mention was made as to the future of Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, or his potential continued appearances in the series.

Meanwhile, McDevitt also quashed any hopes of an Assassin’s Creed game being set exclusively in the current day.

“I doubt we would do a modern day AC,” he said. “There are just too many mechanics we would have to develop to make it [believable] ... vehicles, plausible modern cities, a huge array of ranged weapons, etc.”

“The modern day will most likely remain as a ‘context’ for all future games, something to tie them all together.”

McDevitt added, “Watchdogs will scratch the itch for a modern day AC. Just wait!”

  • Connor was a crap character I like he is not coming back
  • I liked Connor honestly but I feel no need to revisit. Kinda did that with the Tyranny of George Washington anyways.
  • These guys have ruined AC ever since they introduced Multiplayer and followed up Brotherhood with Revelations. Put the game to rest.
  • Good news, Connor was boring as hell, there's no need for a completely modern day one since you have the Desmond parts anyway
  • Nice one for the spoiler lee.
  • Woah never had a first comment wow sweet, to elaborate he was always crying and whining and felt like a spoilt child, the amount of native speak with subtitles was frustrating and boring and you couldn't skip any of the dialogue so you slowly get posses off with that. Also he had no real relationships with anyone in the game properly like ezio did so there was no " what a great guy etc etc" it was just a linear boring experience character development in this one but it didn't matter to the fame as the mechanics were so vastly improved and bu ting was so immense to do. I have black flag skull edition to open and play tonight so hopefully they made a good character in kenway...
  • #6, Errr, I think you will find after typing your short essay, a few people got in before you. Better luck next time.
  • “I doubt we would do a modern day AC,” he said. “There are just too many mechanics we would have to develop to make it [believable] ... vehicles, plausible modern cities, a huge array of ranged weapons, etc.” -Sounds lazy. Or time for developing something so "different" from an average Creed game is very restricted due to yearly releases. McDevitt added, “Watchdogs will scratch the itch for a modern day AC. Just wait!” -Figured as much. I'll pass on Watch Dogs for sure.
  • I personally think he needs another game. A game where it actually makes him a memorable character like the rest of the AC protagonists.
  • Is it true that Desmond isn't in it anymore? I'm so lost with the story
  • @5, what spoiler?
  • @8 They have to make it believable, yet climbing up a gigantic building barehanded an fighting 20 men at once is so believable. If they didn't release a damn game every single year and put time into and maybe scrap a stupid ass tacky online then I would actually consider buying it.
  • So, they are basically not going to ever give us the sequel we have been waiting for, because it wouldn't be cost effective. Fucking fail.
  • I think, (with how ACIV started) Ubisoft completely copped out of the entire "modern day" twist that made all the games incredibly interesting to begin (errrr end?) with. I'll play Black Flag. I'll love Black Flag. But from a consistency standpoint. Fails all around.
  • @13, what sequel are we all asking for? AC3 was horrible, I don't want a sequel to it. Give us more varied timelines that games don't normally lean towards. British occupation of India, Industrial Revolution London, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ivan the Great/Ivan the Terrible Russia. No need for a modern game or more Conner, there are more interesting avenues they can take. American Revolution could have been a great setting, but they failed to get it right and should just move on.
  • I think the best era would be Victorian England with Jack the Ripper as a Templar
  • #16, that's not a bad setting, maybe a wild west setting could be possible too.
  • @7 I think you'll ding that #6 is also #1 OT: I'm STILL to finish AC:III. It just hasn't grabbed me like AC:II and to be honest I wasn't bothered about the boat bits so Black Flag doesn't appeal either.
  • I actually enjoyed AC3. I don't really see how a sequel could turn out for Connor's story though. I was thinking maybe a Civil War setting, I really like the American history aspect... but I do love #15 and #16's comments also.
  • Assassins creed multiplayer is so bad omg it ruined the game for me. Ill never be able to play another ac game again. You guys know there is an option to play single player. You can act like multiplayer doesn't exist like I do lol
  • I can honestly say I have loved EVERY Assassins Creed game to date. The only thing I do NOT like about it is the Tacked on MP. I believe if they would've left it strictly a SP game, they would've been able to put more time/resources into it and possibly would've have a stronger story line to pull people into the game, instead of pushing the majority away. But like I said, I have loved EVERY Assassins Creed game for the Single-Player aspect itself.
  • I couldn't bring myself to like Connor, loving ass creed black flag though
  • Yeah if they didn't have MP the writers would get more money and unleash all those wicked twists they were holding back in case Ubisoft had more money kicking around. That's how writing works. Money = Ideas. Just check out James Patterson's latest masterwork.
  • Okay I feel fucking ripped off and cheated. Assassin's Creed could have been an amazing series. Assassin's Creed 4 to me right now is nothing. It's just another game so they can make more money. I wanted, NEEDED, a modern day Assassin's Creed. Main protagonist being Desmond Miles. All the work into this series for him to just sacrifice himself? It's ridiculous and a terrible ending to what could have been great. Extremely anti-climatic. I wanted to take the fight right to the Templars in present day. Nope can't do that because the writers failed terribly. Also for McDevitt to state that Watch Dogs will scratch the itch, here is some news for you, IT WON'T! Watch Dogs is a separate game. It isn't Assassin's Creed and we wanted an Assassin's Creed game set in modern day. Okay now onto more Assassin's Creed 4. What is the point of Edward Kenway? I'm more than halfway through this game and Edward isn't even part of the Creed. He helps them occasionally but he is more in this for himself. I want more of Altair style. Proud to be a member of the Creed and will never stop trying to eliminate the Templars. I can't bring myself to even give a slight of a fuck for Edward. Altair, Ezio and Connor were honorable people and stood with the Creed. They need to either kill the series already or make a better protagonist then this douche bag.
  • The only one I'm really waiting for is one set in Ancient Egypt. Hopefully they do that setting one day! and maybe bring Desmond back? or at least another relative instead that stupid first person stuff in Black Flag.
  • I dont see what all the fuss is about really. Assassins creed 3 was a great game.
  • Is it sad I thought Assassins Creed 1 and 2 were amazing but then when the series was annualized I started to dislike them more and more to the point were I just have a major disliking to the series
  • Love the series and am looking forward to seeing which way it will progress, but i cannot stand the modern day sections, they're shit! So is a relief they dont plan an entire game of it...
  • Ancient Egypt for me: AMAZING!! I like sand and awesome temples, tons of secrets and exploration, and the arsenal, can't wait to see our hero with that axe-spear with double edge..ubisoft maybe you want to call me for ideas. Ahhh!! i forgot i live in HAVANA..ubi you made a mistake with your map..The Castle you called SALVADOR DE LA PUNTA its actually CASTILLO DE LA REAL FUERZA...you can see the first one in the map, to the north in an area out of play zone. Don't worry..THIS GAME IS AMAZING and next ones will be amazing too..of course, NO ASSASSIN IN MODERN DAY!!
  • @8 You do know that there are a lot of different teams working on each AC game, right? And that they produce the games over several years? AC III began production right after AC II, not after Revelations... OT: Personally, I didn't care much for Connor, but enjoyed the game overall... The MP still seems to me as an unnecessary add-on.. It's an okay effort, and it works, but not needed... I had hoped for either feudal Japan, or the victorian London! But it still might be in the cards!!
  • @3 i agree they runed the game by adding mp, but i think if they would just drop the mp and add more attention to the actual sp that people fell in love with they could continue to make the series an awesome game that it once was.
  • The only way for AC to continue, is set in the past. The entire story/character style turns to goopy-mush once you enter modern times/technology. Don't care about Connor. lol @ #6 "the amount of native speak with subtitles was frustrating and boring" ....Native speak huh?
  • I don't think a modern-day version would be unique. What would they call it... "Assassin's Creed: Splinter Cell?!"
  • im so glad people see conner the way I did, dull and lifeless ! Haythem was much better, they should dedicate a game to the Templar side, assassins and Templars are so similar
  • desmond dies.
  • I love AC4 it's brilliant, so dynamic and different and love the pirate stuff, which is really surprising coz I'm not gunna lie I thought it was gunna b shite. AC story was OK was fun to begin with but became boring with Connors constant whining. Liked the overall story though but of course was not as good as AC 1,2 and even brotherhood. Modern day AC? Hmmm not very interested in that tbh. I like the history stuff, maybe one set in shang dynasty or something, but if u actually play AC 4 thoughrly @SPOILERT ALRT then you will be able to read up on possible ideas to future AC games in the "modern day" parts off the game.
  • i haven't finished AC IV yet but i wasn't bothered by ACIII the setting caught me being in America at that time period. But I also agree there is no need to come back to Conner they could go back to the Revolutionary war just with another assassin. You just couldn't really love Conner to care what happens after the ending of the 3rd one, like you felt for Ezio and wanted to see what happened to him. I would love a game that takes place between brotherhood and revelations or another game about Altaire (or however you spell it) like what happened during his exile. I will always love this game series and continue to buy the special editions every year and let's face it with any series there is always gonna b on or two that fall short of the others an so far in AC that is the third
