Desert Survivalist Achievement in Fallout: New Vegas

  • Desert Survivalist

    15

Heal 10,000 points of damage with food.

  • How to unlock Desert Survivalist

This will almost certainly require boosting. A decent Survival skill score is a must, as it will greatly reduce the time to achieve this (Survival impacts how much health food replenishes). Also note that you must heal 10,000 points of damage, not eat 10,000 points of food health. A way to simply power through this is as follows:

    • Go to the Gourmand in the Ultra Luxe Casino with a large sum of money and no inventory.
    • Buy out the food waiter's inventory.
    • Wait for 48-72 hours.
    • Buy him out again.
    • Repeat the last two bullets until you have 10,000 points worth of health replenishment from food.
    • Walk next door into the Ultra Luxe Bathhouse.
    • Enter the pool and start drowning yourself, healing with food as required.
    • Continue until the achievement unlocks.

  • Stock up on food and then head to a lake. Drown yourself to the point that you have a sliver of HP, nomnomnom the food, rinse, repeat.
  • Good locations to get some food are 188 trading post, Mega-Luxe kitchen, Atomic wrangler kitchen, Camp McCarran, inside the Camp Golf mansion, Killing the Bighoners and brahim in Matthews Animal Husbandry farm, and running around in the mountain where Jacbobs town is killing bighorners. Allso having high survival helps alot. These locations was enough for me to get the achi for my survival 90 character. Drinking Nuka Colas of Sun Sarsarilla's does not give you healt from food, but water bottles do. Good way to get this done is go drown in a lake and repeat untill you get the achievement.
  • Water bottles don't count towards this one, nor do Nuka Colas or Sunset Sarsparillas. I've checked the challenges pages and the Desert Survivalist chalenge does not increase after drinking water, at least not for me. Another good way of lowering your health is to use a missile launcher at a wall your facing, this can cost a lot of caps but you can predict how much damage will be done with each firing. This is a good one to do tied with the Stim-ply Amazing Achievement. Make a Save after you have bought a whole load of food and Stimpaks, use your prefered method for hurting yourself, then use food to heal yourself. Rince and repeat. Then, when the achievement pops, reload the save and then use stimpaks instead.
  • keep falling asleep trying to do this one, only got 1050 worth of food done lol
  • I have been drinking Dirty water and Purified water and it's been going up by 20 points for each water drank. Don't check it under data check it under your general stats.
  • Sunset Sarsaparilla works too. You can find like 50+ at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters. Also, like the first post says. Head to somewhere you can drown yourself to a sliver of life, I used Cottonwood Cove.
  • damn it, i was wrong about the Sarsaparilla's. They won't work for this achievements, sorry bout that
  • If you decide to raid the kitchen at the Ultra-Luxe, don't forget you can use their swimming pool to bring your health down.
  • The best method I've seen is collect Radscorpion Glands (regular, not the Bark Radscorpions) and take them to Ruby Nash in Primm, who makes food out of them that heals around 60HP each (and takes 1 gland per food item). Then drown yourself and use them. Its faster than scavenging for food + you can get EXP/progress to the weapon achievements at the same time since you gotta kill Radscorpions
  • When you take damage , immidietaly go to your inventory and eat all you can eat (dosen't matter if it's over your health max). This way all the food you eat will be add to your total even tough you don't really need it.
  • I did this on my third play-through, Surprisingly easy. I thought this was going to be the hardest achievement to get, by level 12 I had gotten it. I didn't make any food, just collected what I found.. Water does count, just not nuka or sasp. Nellis AFB has been mentioned for stock piling food.. With 40-50 Survival you gain alot of extra health per food. Gulp N Grub is a good place to hit as well. 72 hrs in game = vendor refresh.
  • Thanks for the help
  • Buy the wasteland omelet from the utra-luxe kichten. I have like 35 on surival and it heals 6(1 min) 6 times 60= 360 so like 30 of them should do the trick.. PS the cost about 500 Caps and i had decent Barter
  • does food stack up? if i use 2 of same food does it double the effect ?
  • Magic7Ball,that is why we have infinite cap glitches :D
  • I isolated a deathclaw and crippled its leg to slow it down and to ensure it can't do that nasty jump attack; after that, just let it whack away at you and keep eating. You can eat as much food as you like but try not to eat too much otherwise you will regenerate health too fast. This is definitely much faster and funner than that drowning way.
  • just start a new playthrough and just use geckomeat
  • Doesnt that give you so much rad. Man these achievements are going to take long :(
  • make you survival as high as you can and do the ruby nash procedure, it makes it go faster and becomes the fastest method
  • Water does count towards it, go to camp mccarran and buy all the food and water from the canteen, then damage yourself badly with a grenade and down everything at once. You don't need to wait for your health to recover, it counts towards the achievement as soon as you've eaten it. Then wait 72 hours and the shop will re-stock.
  • Easily done when your doing the DLC and the melee achievement.
  • I tested it out today, and Purified Water counts toward this achievement. Sasparillas, nukas and drinking water from the pool/lake does not count. The cook at Camp McCarran has like 50 bottles of purified water.
  • Ignore what the guide claims. You don't need to actually wait to be healed by the food. Take a small amount of damage, eat all the food you have, and you'll get points for every bit of food eaten, not just what you can actually gain back.
  • Waiting for 48 hours has been working for me with the Ultra Luxe Gourmand Food Supplier.
  • The drowning technique works great but you dont have to wait for your energy to come back up. You can barely get damaged and simply eat the crap out of all your inventory. At first I thought you had to let your energy recharge while eating but you dont. The longest part is letting that dude restock his food supply.
  • I found that clockwork Geoff strategy works the best. The chef in camp McCarran sells fifty bottles of water every three days so stock up then head outside grenade yourself, then drink all of the water at once and then rinse and repeat. Took me about forty minutes also it helps when your survival skill is quite high.
  • The amount of points you get matters on how high your survival skill is. I went to Ultra-lux & bought out his Wasteland Omelets but also the Brahimin Steaks, Barrel Catus Fruit, & Pinyon Nuts. At 55 points in Survival you can make Desert Salads at campfires which do alot of points to healing. I have 70 points(+20 for lads life), so the Desert Salads do +16 to health points...
  • This was the last achievement i did to 100% complete this game (before dead money came out) I was already level 30 and had a bunch of purified water, there's a spot near goodsprings (devil's gullet or something like that can't remember because havent played in awhile) where there's a giant hole in the ground with a ramp laying on top of a bus to get to the bottom, i just jumped from the ramp to the ground and it took almost 350hp drank a few waters, ate some food, waited for the health to recharge and did it again and again, only took 10 min.
  • You don't even need to keep hurting yourself. Just eat all of the food at once because it counts all of the health points at once for the achievement and it doesn't matter if you go over the maximum health limit.
  • The Ultra Luxe has a lot of food beyond the Gourmand. If you break in/have access to the kitchens late at night (as there will be less/no people around, you can raid not only the numerous kitchens, but the many pantries and fridges also. This DOES count as karma loss for stealing, however.
  • Also, the drowning trick works best when: get the point you are being damaged, but stay underwater while you eat all of your food and until it wears off; this way you are guaranteed to get the maximum amount of health from the food you eat.
  • what are the best ways to get this
  • could you drown yourself and then drink the water....?
  • to answer myself, no you cant. also, you dont have to wait until everything wears off, because the challenge registers it as you use it
  • @32 ...Really? 31 previous comments, tips, strategies and you post that question? Just read what is already there, then pick your favorite one and do it.
  • Dude, Galiant, back the hell off! Maybe instead of harassing an innocent gamer just looking for some help, maybe you should look up a method and stick it up your arse! Well I never!
  • ^?
  • Been working on this all day.. Got up to 6,000 from 1,000 in like 3hrs.. :/
  • The Ultra-Luxe seems to re stock in food every 72hrs. So just wait 3 full days and buy then wait again until you finally have this.
  • If you just hurt yourself once eat all the food it still counts :)
  • Ignore what the guide says. You may not gain health from using food items when you are at full health, but it does count if you look at your stats > health from food. I have full health right now and it flies up when I use all my food items. Go to the Ultra-Lux and buy out the food suppliers food items. Wait 48 hours and do it again. Took me about 20 minutes to get the achievement. (Survival stats: 75)
  • I just did it in like 80 minutes, with a Survival stats of 25. Just go to the Ultra-luxe, wait 72 hour, and buy their food, try to buy the wasteland omelet (or something like that) if you eat one, and wait for an hour, you will get like 350HP, so do that a couple of times while you drown yourself, and you will get this in about 2 hours
  • If you just eat all your food at once, you are wasting a lot of valuable HP. You should wait to reap the benefits. For example, 1 Sarsaparilla = 50 HP. If you have 10 in total you will get 500 HP worth towards the achievement. This will not count if you wait & damage yourself respectively.
  • * This will not count if you >DO NOT< wait & damage yourself respectively.
  • Balls, nevermind - eating my words now because I know Sunset doesn't count. My bad folks!
  • I'd advise doing this on your hardcore run-through... It helps out a lot
  • Finally got the achievement. I had about 5000 on my playthrough and then just bought from the Ultra-Luxe.
  • This would ve tge tyPe of achievement that you get along the story line
  • so wasteland omelets anyone?
  • I used my sierra madre chips to buy a ton of food and would stay underwater until my health was almost gone and would use 500 hp worth every time until I got the achievement
  • This sounds like a blast! NOT! Man all my friends had like 1000 gamer points and I had over 3000 and I thought I was the big man on campus! :(
  • not sure if its been said yet but if you go to The Thorn (its somewhere near Freeside i cant fully confirm its whereabouts if you're level 20 or above get the perk for every place to be revealed) and fight 3 radscorpions over and over picking up the radscorpion poison glands until you're on about 200/300 then take them to Ruby Nash in Primm and have her make you casseroles from the glands now get injured and eat all of them it should jump up to 6000/7000 odd
  • what I done was I bought all of the food from the ultra luxe a couple of times and then I went to there pool and drowend myself until my health was low and then eat everything you have some people say that you have to only to eat a couple or it wont work but I just ate it all and I got the achievement
  • FINALLY!
  • If you complete hardcore mode you should have easily gotten this achievement
  • It does take a long time because most foods heal you rather slowly. The best way is to simply stock up and drown yourself until you are nearly dead then use food to heal. Its the quickest way to get it.
  • There's a guy in Freeside that sells a bunch of animal steaks and foods. They heal quite a bit, so it's a good idea to check in between him and the Gourmand every now and then.
  • A good way to do this is to jump off a cliff and eat all you can..
  • you should try to get this one if your also going for the hardcore achievement since you can use skill points to max out survival and food gives more health points to make this easier
  • This is probably the fastest method... >At Camp McCarran in the concourse, talk to Cpl. William Farber. He can found around the eating area. He sells at one time: (17) Fresh Carrot, (31) Fresh Potato, (43) Maize, and (1) Pork and Beans. >Go around the corner, hurt yourself, eat your food (BUT DO NOT CLOSE THE PIPBOY UNTIL YOU EAT ALL THE FOOD). Repeat. >Note: make sure your not an enemy of the NCR (I am not sure if it matters, but it is an NCR Camp) >Note: watch out for NCR soldiers when hurting yourself, they will attack back including the chef who sells the food.
  • perfect. buyed him out 3 times, get me 3000 points. just gonna do it 7 more times, and cheevo is done ;)
  • bottled water and omelettes
  • In Old World Blues, inside The Sink, there's a sink that can refill empty bottles, turning them into Purified Water. You can find a ton of empty bottles scattered throughout the Mojave, but the best place I've found to obtain them is at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters, where there are dozens of crates of empties. The HQ is located just a bit southwest of the Gun Runners, directly west of the NCR Sharecropper Farms. If you have the Pack Rat perk, you can hold twice as many of these empty bottles as you could otherwise, since all items weighing 2 or less are reduced in weight by half. If you have companion(s) following you, you can use their inventory to haul some of the empties, and then when it comes time to fill the bottles, unload the rest of your inventory into the Weapons
  • Crate (or any other /safe/ chest that items don't despawn in) at the house you're using (the Lucky 38, for example) then take the empties back from your companion(s) now that you have more room. Dismiss the companion(s) now, since you can't take them into Old World Blues, then use the Transportalponder (you'll need to be outside The Strip first for the Transportalponder to work, so fast travel to anywhere it will work, Gun Runners for example) and take the empties to the sink inside The Sink (I know it sounds kinda funny to say it) if you grabbed as many as you could from the Sunset Sarsaparilla plant you should have at least a hundred bottles of Purified Water to work with.
  • Since you have to play the game through multiple times to get all of the achievements anyways, it only makes sense to just have one food character and one stim character. By the time you finish the game (if you're not playing on very easy, anyways) you should be close to 10k (I was sitting around 7000) on either character, then just spam the rest out in 15 minutes. Easy.
  • this is a lot of help from all you people thanks i will post what i did when i get the achievement.
  • Camp McCarran worked for me, had 17 survival n got roughly 1200 health points everytime i bought him out
  • i Think this achievement is waste off time.
  • That was tedious!
  • I didn't have to boost what so ever. Just played normally on hard difficulty which enemies do a quite the damage. Slow but steady progress.
  • still working on this i hate this one
  • still working on this
  • Im close, 9000 ao close.
  • I went through an entire play through and its only at about 3,000, welp this is going to take awhile.
  • A real easy way is to play the sierra madre dlc and get banned from the casino. At this point you should have a boat load of chips. Explore the casino and their should be a hotel room full of the poisonous gas and near is a vending machine. Save, and purchase a lot of food and step in and out of the gas and heal yourself. Its easier than drowning your self and trying to go to multiple locations to get the food you need.
  • Yeah, this achievement is going to take forever. Played more than 100 hours and still havent gotten it. Just gonna use and use food til I get it.
