Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards

Replay Games Secures Leisure Suit Larry Worldwide Rights; HD Remake Coming Next Year (and More)
Written Tuesday, October 11, 2011 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

The character that spawned a generation of love rats and lounge lizards, Larry Laffer, is set to corrupt the youth once again in 2012 as Replay Games today announced that they had snapped up the worldwide rights to the franchise.

Larry’s original creator, Al Lowe, is on board with developer, Adventure-Mob and publisher, Replay Games, to not only bring the classic Leisure Suit Larry games to the Xbox Live and PSN – amongst others – in HD in 2012, but they’re teasing new adventures too! Hopefully these new comical adventures are point-and-click titles like the originals and nothing like that god-awful Codemasters game from a few years back!

Starting in Q4 2012 or as Replay like to put it, "as soon as it’s suitably awesome!", the team will be bringing Leisure Suit Larry In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards in HD to a series of platforms. Promising no "knock offs, no pseudo-relatives," according to Replay, "These are the real deal."

“I'm totally jazzed to work with long-term friend and Sierra buddy, Paul Trowe,” said original creator, Al Lowe, “He's worked tirelessly for years to get the Larry rights and return them to the hands of the Sierra ‘family.’ Working with Paul's team ensures that the world’s favorite leisure suit-wearer remains the same guy we all learned to love a quarter-century ago. I'll oversee the entire production of these games to ensure the highest standards and some amazing new adventures for my pal, Larry. It's great to see my creation released from his digital dungeon!"

There you have it, looks like the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN will be slightly more sleazy in 2012 then... and that’s nothing but a good thing, right? If anyone wants me, I’ll be making balloon animals out of condoms in a dark corner somewhere. Not that you’re interested.

The latest one on the 360 was hilarious, absolutely brilliant game, I never played the first games so this'll be a must.

@ 5 - The first one that appeared on the 360 was horrible!

-The controls were tight and wonky
-The "missions" were supremely drawn out
-Golf carts knocked you down and took you 2 minutes to get up

I never got to play the second one but the previous one on the previous gen platforms - LSL: Magna Cum Laude was absolute gold. Great mini-games and the raunchy humor was pretty AAA.

@9 - I must admit, it took me a good few hours to get my head around the controls, trying to find those medal things was a nightmare. Say one was on the edge of a ledge, almost every time the damn camera would flick around, causing you to move straight off the edge. My favourite part was the horror place rhough, loved that the most.

@ 11 - I sincerely doubt he's in a montage of pictures and descriptive words on a piece of oak-tag.

Oh, you were going for College. Because you're so smart. You may want to put the "brakes" on your ability to spell though since you have issues with too many simplistic words.

Everyone can easily assume you're a kid with nothing better to do than start internet flame wars. I'd say prove me wrong but we both and all know that's laughable.

Ignore Words Of The Few - he's a well known troll.

On topic, chalk me up as being pleased at this news. Getting Al Lowe back on board is great in going forward with the Larry character.

This is awesome! The older LSLs are a lot of fun. I avoided playing the one of the 360 due to all of the horror stories I heard, similiar to what #9 was describing. I hope this goes well and they continue to remake all of the classic LSL.

Not the best point and click series in the world is it? I can think of a lot better things to reshelf . (lucas arts/sierra)

I can't imagine the pixalated titty humor would appeal to people anymore like it did to erm.... my friend when it first came out :)

@ 21 - The only one I had extensive time with was LSL3 and 5 although I could never find a true #4 so I consider 5 to be 4. The ones with the Patti chick. They were reminiscent of Lounge Lizards.

I still highly recommend Magna Cum Laude if you can find it. Everything about it was enjoyable and dirty. If you never thought sex with a carrot was hot, think again!

An adventure game on XBLA? A remake of an olde classic?
It might not be S&MhtR or CoMi, but it's a damn good start!

I still have all the olde LSL games for the Amiga! Achievement Walkthrough time! ^_^

This is amazingly good news. Liesure Suit Larry was hilarious back in the day, so I'm glad to see it find a proper new life.

But, it was the second highest grossing series for Sierra Online, so if we are getting LSL, maybe we have a possibility of getting the highest grossing Sierra game, and the highest grossing game of all time for 5 years after its release: King's Quest.

Speaking of Sierra games, does anyone remember this little PC gem Hunter Hunted?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_Hunted_%28video_game%29

It played like a Spy vs Spy game except one person was this dude Jack and the other was this bipedal beast dude. It was pretty kickass.

@ 26 - Box Office Bust was the horror!!!! I thought it was going to be at least on par with MCL but turns out it was everything opposite. BoB didn't even have the raunchy R rating-esque ideas that MCL did.

Hopefully some good news. I've never played any of the older ones so I might have to check em out. I got into Larry with MCL and was seriously disappointed with Box Office Bust, hopefully they can redeem that games failures with this new one. Only time shall tell!

@ 33 - It's going (to start) with a remake of the old school ones on XBLA according to the article. They were essentially 2D "Spy vs Spy" styled games with tons of raunchy and explicitly hilarious antics.

I hope they re-release MCL and it's good to know I wasn't the only one who suffered through BoB.

With this back in the hands of Al Lowe I'll have to keep my eye on these. The original Larry games were hilarious, but I stopped following them when Al left! Would love to see Lori and Corey Cole bring back the QFG games.

@23 - One of my favorites has to be LSL6 - Shape up or slip out. As to your reference to LSL4, I was curious about this as well and found (via wikipedia) that: Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Missing Floppies (This non-existent 4th game was skipped and is an often jokingly referenced in-game for the series.) And that there were 3 other cancelled games along with LSL 4 lol

Oh. My. GOD! I remember going to use my parents computer when I was 6 or 7 sneaking onto my parents old IBM to play the original. Maaaaaaan....that was so risque back in the 80's :P

I still remember most of the puzzles to this day, like getting the bottle of wine, using the remote to distract the pimp, the need for a condom (I think you died if you didn't use one...)

Oh memories....

And to the Mods: Can you please just boot the trolls. They've cluttered every damn article today...

So irritating that only 221 of 222 points were possible in the orignial PC game. Maybe they'll include an achievement for finally being able to 'complete' the game.

Considering the original LSL game on the 360 was a broken piece of shit, I'll definitely be passing on this one. I appreciate the dick joke humor once in awhile, but not non-stop for hours on end in a game. >

What I'd like to know will this be a HD version of the remake they did of Leisure Larry where its all point and click or a HD version of the very 1st where you type commands.

I would love both versions myself, loved typing commands esp in Police Quest. Open door, sit, close door, start car, drive, etc.
