Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Details Emerge With 'Galactic Readiness'
Written Tuesday, October 11, 2011 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

BioWare has revealed the first official details for Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, which will take the form of 4-player co-op missions playable via Xbox Live, where players can choose from a variety of classes and races to form an elite Special Forces squad to fight together and "liberate key territories from enemy control."

Your progress in multiplayer will also have a direct impact upon the outcome of the single-player campaign, although BioWare is keen to stress that you can still achieve the "optimal, complete ending" in Mass Effect 3 through just playing the single-player portion of the game.

Also revealed is the Mass Effect 3: Galaxy at War system, which as a bonus to the campaign, enables players to manage their war against the Reapers using multiple methods, including 4-player co-op. You'll be able to build Shepard and his team's 'Galactic Readiness', gathering people, resources, weapons, armies and fleets through a variety of platforms and interfaces, the details of which are under wraps for now. We imagine social networking will probably play a part though.

There'll be character progression, weapon upgrading and leveling up in 4-player co-op too, as mentioned in a series of FAQs regarding the newly announced co-op mode posted on the BioWare forums, which also addresses a multitude of concerns, including whether co-op will have any kind of a negative impact upon the single-player campaign.

"We have always maintained that we would only add multiplayer into the Mass Effect series if it made sense and did not compromise the power of the single player campaign. Fighting together against a common threat was the multiplayer experience that made the most sense for Mass Effect 3. The way we have designed co-op as a way to take control of key conflict zones in the galaxy is a natural extension of the premise of Mass Effect 3," reads the FAQ post. "Our priority and focus with Mass Effect 3 has and always will be to deliver a complete and satisfying single player experience."

Ane here's the final word on why multiplayer won't affect the single-player campaign in Mass Effect 3: "BioWare is dedicated and focused on delivering an engaging, fun, and action-packed experience for Mass Effect 3, one that lives up the BioWare standard. To reach that level of quality, last year BioWare opened a studio in Montreal that is home to designers, programmers, engineers, and other developers. Both studios work together as partners, lead by the core Mass Effect team, unified in a single vision. Under the direction of Casey Hudson and other team veterans, both studios make contributions to both the single player and multiplayer modes in Mass Effect 3. Rest assured that no compromises were made to either of these modes in the development of Mass Effect 3."

So there you have it. Mass Effect 3, with it's 4-player co-op and Galaxy at War system, will be winging its way into stores on March 6th, 2012.

Multiplayer sounds like it's only going to add to an amazing single player. Then again, they could tell me Shepard dies as soon as the game opens and I would still buy it...oh wait, already did that.

Eh, as long as they don't screw up the single player they can add all the co-op they want. I barely have time to enjoy great single player games much less have time for co-oping with people on their schedules. So I'll likely pass entirely on it. Glad they didn't add competitive multiplayer. Turning this into a Gears of War clone would have been a huge fail if you ask me.

lately, more and more game developers have been deeming it 'necessary' to have some sort of multiplayer in their games. this is Bioware, after all, so i trust they know what they're doing, and that the co-op wont disappoint.

At first I was like"Oh God No, why put multiplayer in an RPG Game but especially Mass Effect 3", however now if it's just Bioware doing this then I can totally trust them.

I was worried with the initial leak the other day...now I feel a lot better about it. 4 player co-op mass effect? Sold. I trust that bioware will have done a good job here - they seem to have remained focussed on the story, using the co-op to add to the campaign.

Now I'm all excited again :)

Hmmm, not sure I'm gonna get this anymore. I'm the biggest ME fan and a big RPG fan and MP in the game just doesn't do it for me. Sorry Bioware but I'm just might pass on this one and cancel my pre order. Very very sad....

@11 Why not? It's the same mindblowing single player experience you would've had just with the bonus of being able to play with friends if you so choose?
I personally think it's a brilliant addition, implemented very well, and I can't wait to find out more and for it to be released!

the fact that it has MP doesn't change the fact it's gonna be an amazing game, it will still have exactly the same single player campagin that it had a month ago, but now there's a co-op story parralel to the main one.

this doesn't change anything, and at most from the sound of it the only thing this might change is how fast the reapers, or how fast they defeat you.

I don't get the sheer level of outrage and horror at this. like it's seriously gonna change the fact the game is actually gonna be amazing.

OT: YAY ME3 SOON!!! but not soon enough

I don't like the idea of the co-op affecting the multiplayer. I am hesitant to believe the single player game won't be effected but I guess we will need to wait and see.

I just lost a lot of respect for Mass Effect. They were the example of a series not needing any multiplayer to be successful, but apparently even they could not hold off the influence of multiplayer content forever. Cancelling my Mass Effect 3 preorder tomorrow.

I don't care who you are or what your series is, if it doesn't need MP, don't put it in your game. Looking at you, BioShock and Assassin's Creed.

@10 if you are a big ME fan why would you pass up on finishing the series because of an optional extra which they say wont stop you from getting certain endings? I understand multiplayer isnt for everyone. I too am one of those people who would much rather developers make a great single player game rather than wasting time tacking on a multiplayer that isnt any good, but with this they are saying it is optional and will add an extra dimention to the game without taking anything away from those who just want to play single player. I am a huge ME fan aswell and I was worried when the rumour mill started churning out stories about ME3 having multiplayer but this I am absolutely fine with. Im still very much looking forward to finishing Shepards story and im looking forward to trying the co-op missions.

Also this made me think, with Bioware saying that this wont be the end of Mass Effect, if these missions are a kind of trial as to what to do with other kinds of ME games.

Okay people don't seem to realise this....if you don't like co-op you don't have to play that part of the game! You can just stick to the same single player game you would've got without the addition of co-op. I have no idea why some people are complaining- be grateful!

I'll say it again:
Multiplayer in games means you can't just borrow your buddy's copy of a single player only game. That means more sales.

More sales of a game means that developers will be able to continue to make more of the games we love. Multiplayer in a game has the potential to mean more sales if it's fun.

Assuming multiplayer has been added so they can put out DLC as if this is the end of the trilogy I can't see how they can do DLC for it unless they do a side story about a different character.

Wow, people are never happy.
I for one am excited about this.
Will it have the same engine as sp? Yes. Will it have a story to it? Yes. Will it be a broken multiplayer? No. Seriously. There is no harm in adding a co-op side to this. People bitch at how games don't have decent co-op anymore, and then when a great game comes a long you bitch about how the co-op will 'ruin' it.

although BioWare is keen to stress that you can still achieve the "optimal, complete ending" in Mass Effect 3 through just playing the single-player portion of the game. - Don't like Co-op then don't play it. Although it may say it will affect single player, it also says that they "stress" you can still reach "optimal completion". So it wont have a severe impact on those who dislike Co-op but you have to be willing to accept the fact that something, we don't know what yet, will be missing without compromising the full completion of the single player campaign. Personally I agree with @13, it's a fantastic addition to an already incredible looking game. Creates an extended play-time as well as being able to play and replay co-op missions with friends. Can't wait to hear more and be able to play this in Easter!

Adding multiplayer to existing single-player games always tries to force a contrived explanation as to why not being Shepard or Ezio or whoever is just as fun as being the man himself. If I didn't want to be Shepard, I wouldn't play Mass Effect.

I don't mind co-op or multi in a game, sure I do not touch it most of the time, I am a little upset about my gamer-score on some games because of it. Assassins creed 100%, Assassins Creed 2 100%, assassins creed Brotherhood not 100% boo. Oh well as long as the single is awesome as I expect it to be that's cool,BUT I really hope there are no multi or co-op achievements I am one of the few I guess with no friends and can't get my Wife to play and my 2 kiddos are too young to play atm maybe soon I can get my oldest to co-op left 4 dead with me hahaha. I love Bio-ware and Mass Effect and Dragon Age is awesome.

Personally I think you will just earn XP in Co-op multiplayer playing a variety of battles without affecting any of the games main plot twists or turning points. Therefore play lots of co-op and you may be able to fully level up your character in one play through.

Co-op missions may see you unlock new skins or weapons but i doubt they would make anything a must have to fully survive the single player experience.

I'm not keen on the inclusion of multiplayer in mass effect, but I find it a bit pointless all these people saying they're not going to buy it or they're going to cancel their preorder because there's multiplayer. If you're such massive fans of the series how about you get the game anyway and then if you decide they've wrecked the single player campaign by putting co-op in, moan about it then.

You never know, they might be true to their word and they might have done an amazing single player campaign and a great co-op campaign aswell. We can but hope.

I love how stupid half of the posts here are. Multiplayer =/= Co-Op.

If you have a reading comprehension level slightly over that of a toddler, you can go ahead and find out that you can read full Readiness JUST FROM the single player OR you can choose to go Co-Op to gain some Readiness as well.

Mass Effect is about choices. You can CHOOSE to play with friends to help both of your games at the same time. Your single player games. There is no versus. There is no reason to go into the Co-Op if you don't want to. It's just a choice you can make.

Go read the Bioware forums post. They say that they're dedicated to the single player campaign and they didn't even do the co-op thing in house, they had BioWare Montreal work on the co-op while they dedicated 100% to the single player campaign.

I cannot even begin to understand how some people see that a single player experience is adding co-op and immediately start complaining as if BioWare punched your first born in the face. Assassin's Creed multiplayer was a fresh new experience, and Mass Effect co-op will likely just deepen the involvement and the emotional investment into the Mass Effect universe as you'll have the opportunity to see how the Reaper invasion is effecting everyone across the Galaxy.

Or just sit there on the Normandy and don't take part in it. It's all about choices. Continue to choose to complain though.

I don't want co-op. But I can deal with co-op. I can see that being a lot of fun.

I don't necessarily give a damn if it has it or not though either. I'd rather it didn't.

So long as they never put in PvP MP with Team Death Match. No fucking way.

Why cancel pre-orders though? I'm keeping mine, there is still the focus on single player campaign experience.

While the MP side of the game may not directly affect the progression and story of the SP game, the time, resources and manpower spent on adding MP to ME3 will indeed affect the quality of the SP side of ME3. Those resources could have been put into the SP game to make it that much better.

@43 Yes because Mass Effect 3 is a sequel to Dragon Age 2 and not Mass Effect 2. Last time I checked the Mass Effect series has received more acclaim than the Dragon Age series from critics and gamers alike. I have played both Dragon Age and Mass Effect and ME was better IMO. ME2 was even better than ME1 though I have yet to play DR2, it doesn't seem like much of an improvement over the first DR.

@56 I think coop is fine, but just play single player. It doesn't really affect single player that much so no harm done. and no goddamn spinoffs at a shit attempt to make more money. Halo, AC and others are mimicking CoD now. It's just for money.

@10 what kind of logic is that, why would you pass on a great game your a huge fan of because it has more added value. I think co-op sounds great and if you dont like it dont play it. Its weird how a huge fan would pass on one of their favorite games cause of an added feature.

They say here the multiplayer will have a direct impact on the outcome of single player, but then they go on in other parts of the story saying multiplayer has no affect on the single player experience. So, I don't get it... Albeit, multiplayer might have a small affect on the single player experience, but still, that is something. Seems to me that if you don't do the multiplayer, then you will have to do extra stuff in single player to make up for it. Anyone else getting the same or different vibe from this?

I believe what they mean, well, possibly meant is that the co-op will show you another side of everything going on in the galaxy. While the SIngle PLayer shows you, well, the main aspects. KInda like that idea, as it shows the galaxy, and the war isn't revolving 100 percent around Shepard.
#60: You're not alone, I'm getting a vibe like that as well

As someone who never plays co-op, I personally do not want this - add to this that they are likely to throw in achievements for those that participate and I am one of many who will miss out. The factthat your stats can be affected by playing multiplayer is ridiculous as effectively it means that there is the potential for people to attain extremely high ranking in multiplayer and then steam through the campaign on the hardest disfficulty as if playing it on easy. If these game makers honestly think people will want this - why not have it as Day One DLC and see just how many people actually download it? I have no doubt that they have had to comprimise on the legnth and depth of the single player campaign in order to facilitate multiplayer which is not acutally wanted by the vast majority. Some games are not meant to be multiplayer and Mass Effect is one of them.

Wow, amazing how these comment sections can put me back on the fence! I was about to post how I didn't like this idea, my reasoning being that time spent getting the whole co-op/mp right would be time that could of been spent polishing the main game. However reading some things here I've changed my tune a little. Especially if what #45 says is true (and I've no reason to believe otherwise). The idea of having friends help out in game via a co-op option akin to left 4 dead is certainly intriguing. I just hope they don't waste precious achievement space trying to push it or end up shovelling in some lame death-match type thing. Personally I was really disappointed when AC:Brotherhood did that. For me, if I want to pit my wits against the masses in some Valhalla style play there's already a whole host of excellent war games that fills the niche quite nicely thanks. I don't need my RPG's trying to crowbar in anything similar.
Finally my only gripe with idea of co-op would be that it may make the story somewhat difficult to follow. Trying to listen to Shepard some deep or interesting plot lines could be awkward whilst the dude the other side of the headsets complaining to his mom or talking to some random party invader.

I see that some people need to learn how to cite quotes, but that's just personal itch.

What I'm really excited about is being able to enjoy this game not only over party chat with my clan, but also a chance to play this amazing franchise with them.

PEOPLE LISTEN this is not as big of a deal as it sounds and not bad at alll
Complaint 1- "it will ruin the single player experience
solution-Montreal is doin the multiplayer while bioware is doin singleplayer
Complaint 2 "I dont want 2 hear my freinds talk while im ME talking or cinema" Solution-
THe multiplayer is COMPLETELY SEPERAte not drop in or out coop its a seperate expereince WITHOUT Shepard you get to create a whole new character (of any race havent u always wanted to be a turian or Batarian BAM now you can)and fight the good fight against the reapers while Shepard builds his/her army Dragon Age origins style
Complaint 3 "they said it affects single player i dont want MP ruining my SP game" solution-
It can only affect you POSSITIVLY your coop sqaud of chums help take down the reapers capture planets and hold them off which helps build shepards readiness faster (rediness is SHEPARDS rediness to defeat the reapers which the faster it fills the faster you can start your counter attack [think of the counterattack as passin through the omega 4 relay]and get the best ending possible, no squadmates dying in omega 4 terms)
THats the best i can do to explain this in a post enjoy

@10 The biggest Mass Effect fan would let a co-op option mean the game isn't worth buying? You don't even need to play it, it's an optional feature that provides no story addition or anything. Shut the fuck up, you whiny little idiot.

# 58 - it's not that i want spinoffs, it's because im very sure that this miltiplayer co-op thing they have in this game will probely suck, face it it's EA thats behind it and like others mention "Server Error" and not to forget that we will also get multiplayer acheivements.. as i wrote before, keep multiplayer to spinoffs if ever...

I'm not the biggest fan of multiplayer on games, but jesus some peope really get their panties in a bunch; cancelling your pre-orders because of this, really? Like I said, I'm not a fan of multiplayer so I probably just won't play it, we'll see, but I wouldn't miss the Mass Effect single player game for anything! One thing I will say is, at least the multiplayer is co-op and not just another title throwing a death match mode in to placate the brain-dead masses!

Lulz. Go ahead and cancel your pre orders because HOW DARE bioware for not living up to YOUR preconceptions of a game thats 5 months away. Me however cant be even more excited for this especially because i think it has a lot of potential. I love this bioware hate group that formed in there "fans" DA2 gets so much hate over recycled enviroments and upgrading their combat mechanic, as well as the writing. What they seem to forget is that mass effect 1 did THE EXACT SAME THING with recycled enviroments(dont tell me those mines and buildings were different), and honestly the story of that game was just setting it up for a third one like Me2.

Also you guys are taking it out of context they said it wont affect the main story because you can still get the best ending without playing coop, and that its being made by a seperate studio while working with the main one and its all overseen by casey hudson, and he hasnt dissapointed me yet.

calm down this game can only get better not worse, and if youre gonna cancel a preorder because of it then you arent a fan and shouldnt even be posting to this

I don't want this. This is meant to be an RPG, how the fuck can you role play with 4 player co-op. I consider myself one of the biggest fans of mass effect. I've engulphed myself in this game for years now, and to find out it has co-op, regardless of it being non-mandatory just puts a terrible damper on my thoughts about this game now. Not looking forward to it so much.

Lol at the people who won't play this now because they added a multiplayer mode and more content. Don't play it then, pass on this game, it's your loss while the rest of us don't assume the worst and enjoy finishing the series.

Totally pointless addition. I don't see anyone playing this online after finishing up the story line with many other better games to play online.

But it's EA so there will be an online pass guaranteed. Will just be renting this though anyway so no big loss.

EA=
Multiplayer Achievement : 0G
Play on this specific day to get this achievement or this game will never be on your 100% list.

That's what I'm worried about.

The only thing that upsets me is the fact that there will probably be co-op achievements and I don't have any friends that like Mass Effect that would play with me and I can't stand running into randoms online. I guess I'll just have to find people on here that are serious about getting the achievements if I want to 100% the entire trilogy.

Again as others have said I'll do the co-op in ME3 IF they make some 2nd rate achievements for this new mode. . . It seems like Bioware is trying to make the final games replay value extended through half thought out means. . . Dont get me wrong I know it "wont effect single player" but I just feel that pinning on a half baked co-op portion of the game to sell a game that. . . lets be honest will sell like CRAZY regardless what you put in it seems a little cheap. NOW what Bioware should have done was keep ME3 pure and THEN release a new title revolving around the post Reaper war. Have that revolve around these new co-op missions and have it based on the MANY forms of galatic armies that are throughout the universe. Want to play a Batarian smuggler? Why the hell not! Want to play as a Turian spec op? Go right ahead! That way Bioware would have made the hardcore fans really happy with a "Pure ME" and resold this co-op game as a full fledged retail game. . . take notes Casey Hudson if you have any questions hit me up on XBL *winks*

Hahahaha everyone of you "Biggest ME fans" are funny. . . where did ya get that title? Your mommy? Oh no. . . you are special no matter WHAT the developers say and you as "the series biggest fan" canceling your pre order will really hit them where it hurts. . . How I feel is the game will come out. We will all LOVE the SP. . . and we wont touch the Co-op, know why? Because we'll forget all about it! I'll be honest I enjoyed the AC multiplayer. . . . the whole one match I played. . .getting first blood was cool. OH and Bioshock 2's MP was AMAZING!!!! The entire 15 minutes I spent in the lobby were magical. My point is this Bioware. . . you either need to go big or go home, you've already sold me on Kinect (that and my love of The Wars) so just please keep your main course AWAY from the desserts.

@8 You trust Bioware after how watered down ME2 was and how awful DA2 was? Don't get me wrong, I swore by Bioware from every game up to Dragon Age 1, but they let me down with the 2 games I mentioned above :(. KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1, Dragon Age 1...-sigh- doesn't get much better than those. I'll probably get ME3, but I'm not going to hold my breath and think that Bioware can still wow me based solely on their reputation. They have to re-earn my respect and faith in them with ME3.

Just please no achievements related to co-op. Those are bad enough in FPS games without having to grind them in an RPG. If it's not Call Of Duty, my friends won't buy it anyway.

I'm just hoping to lord the co-op doesn't change the single player ending remotely. I'd like to play a game alone for once. :p

Also, really hoping "Galactic Readiness" doesn't incorporate too much social networking. That would be a huge downside for me.
