Lionsgate Option the Rights to a Dead Island Movie

Lionsgate has optioned the rights to make a Dead Island movie, with the game's famously haunting announcement trailer acting as the film's main inspiration.

"The film Dead Island will be an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling," said Lionsgate.

"Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate - it's sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential."

The film is currently in the very early stages of development. Producer Sean Daniel, who worked on The Mummy, Tombstone and Dazed and Confused is heading up the project. No acting or directing talent has been announced.

Those that are excited about the film should probably reserve their excitement for now. Books, comics, TV shows, games - lots of stories are optioned to become films, only to stall for one reason or another. Dead Island has a long road ahead of it before it makes it to the big screen.

But, we can't say we're not intrigued. A film based on a trailer that had little or nothing to do with the actual game? Interesting. What do you guys think?

I hope they don't employ whoever wrote the game's cringe-worthy dialogue. "Are you gonna get in the game... or are you just warming the bench?"

Bleurgh.

@1, what are you on about? Lionsgate handle the horror genre excellently? I mean, just look at how big of a success the "SAW" franchise became.

I smell the German named Uwe Boll making this movie!
allmost all his movies based on games sucked, except for Postal, which was quite amusing.

@ 4 - Doesn't matter who directs it or what company backs it up - Game/Comic/TV adaptations into movies rarely transition well and vice versa.

Let's just start with Super Mario Bros...which I like but face it, it's garbage as a "movie"

Resident Evil - Progressively worse EVERY movie

Bloodrayne - We'll not even go there

Max Payne - Not the worst but still pretty bad

The only two I enjoy to watch more than once are Doom and Silent Hill. And they're still nothing spectacular.

I trust Lionsgate with this.. Their theater films are great and they also fund some excellent B-movies.

The problem is a lot of games that turn into movies are already inspired and based off multiple movies..

@7, no, it does matter on that completely! e.g; A Halo movie directed by Steven Spielberg would be much better than one directed by say Uwe boll, same as if it were producers e.g; Disney movies would be worse than Universal studios, the quality of the film depends entirely on those 2 factors.

@ 12 - Can you put a guarantee on that? Many people didn't like Spielbergs version of War of the Worlds. Lotsa people didn't take too well to The Crystal Skull in the Jones series. I'm flexible so I can find reasons to like something if it somewhat appeals to me.

It's like i said though, given the track record so far, all different directors - rarely does a game adaptation over anything else transition well.

Only recently have the Comics become actual AAA movie titles but seriously, name one game adaptation that has come close to complete awesome?

@14, im not saying the films are particulary legendary ;) Im just saying if the film has a good director/studio behind it then the overall quality will be BETTER than if it was a poor director/studio! So hearing that a 'horror game' will be backed by a studio who is decent with horror movies is just a good thing to hear...

The trailer was the best thing about this bug-ridden game, that was clearly rushed to release before it was finished..

@ 15 - I'll respect your positivity on it. I lost mine a long time ago with the subject. As said, it's about the progression to date and quality has NOT improved. I feel that most decent studios and whatnot steer clear of these b/c of such. Uwe Boll put such a hex on directors wanting to adapt a game. However, if Peter Jackson jumped back on the Halo project, I'm very interested. The pic I saw of him standing next to a Warthog looked awesome.

It focuses on the trailer (that was outsourced?) rather than the game itself?
But, I do admit the trailer was more impressive than the actual game itself.

I don't understand why movie games always gotta suck. I read the big article in GameInformer a few months ago as to why the Super Mario Bros movie sucked and you find out that it was about 90-99% the directers' faults. So what happened to the rest of 'em?

To #7, personally I felt this way:

Resident Evil 1 (the original movie) - amazing.

Max Payne - great, some things off from the game, but still good.

Doom - amazing as well, great representation and combination of Doom 1 and Doom3's storyline.

I loved these movies.

@ 26 - Personally, I just didn't like Resident Evil b/c of the whole Alice addition. Main character should've been Leon, Chris, Claire or Jill to begin with. It made me dislike the movie franchise AND Mila J. from there on out.

Doom was one of the best like you said due to it's representation but of course, they abandoned the "Hell" for genetic experimentation. But the FPS nod was absolutely perfect for what it was.

Silent Hill, IMO has the BEST representation as it mixes the first 3 it seems and how they portrayed what little of Pyramid Head was astounding. I got chills. However...the ending completely irked me and thankfully it wasn't a dragged out ending or I would write it off.

@ 27 - Halo is in limbo atm since Jackson left. No word has been up about this for a while. Saddening.

Also, Union Entertainment has the rights for a Call of Juarez movie. Whether it is going to be a movie on just the first game, or if they are making movies for all three games has yet to be determined.

As long as all the actors don't do ridiculous accents like in the game it might only be a terrible movie.

@33 I'm not surprised the Halo movie got cancelled; Halo is such a big name that if somebody wanted to make a movie out of it, it would absolutely have to be flippin' amazing because even a mediocre Halo movie could ruin so many careers at once. I bet directers are actually scared to touch the Halo franchise.

Dead Island I can see working since the plot is so loose to begin with. As long as they keep the main goal of the survivors the same, they can have free reign in my opinion.

@7 i agree that film adaptations of movies are utter crap to say the least but none of these (apart from resident evil) are zombie based films and zombie films usually tend to turn out quite good

Other video game movies no one has mentioned yet are Double Dragon (yeah, there was a movie of that old school beat em' up. It was terrible.), Far Cry, Parasite Eve (japanense film) and 2 Final Fantasy's.
