Gears of War has a lot to answer for. Try to create a third-person action game these days, and it's inevitable that you'll get compared to Epic Games' unstoppable juggernaut of a series. Enter Relic Entertainment with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, an action title that shares DNA with Gears, but is something else.

First of all, there's no cover system. You're an armoured up Ultramarine for whom cover is for wimps, and you have a jump pack to thrust into the air and ground pound Orks below you. It's also Relic's first attempt at the genre, so the question is, has the developer of the Dawn of War RTS series managed to build a solid action title with Space Marine?
