Report: L.A. Noire Fails To Save Team Bondi As Dev Enters Administration
Written Thursday, September 01, 2011 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

LA Noire was not only a success among the critics, scoring incredibly well in our very own review, but it also went on to shift 4 million units since its launch in May. Now three months down the line, reports on Australian business website SmartCompany claim that developer Team Bondi is entering into administration, with accounting firm de Vries Tayeh taking care of the process.

This follows reports that Team Bondi was negotiating a merger with Australian film company Kennedy Mitchell Miller (KMM), and rumours that the studio is selling off its assets and intellectual properties. KMM is thought to be planning a Mad Max game, which could mean jobs for ex-Team Bondi staff, who were apparently offered positions at KMM rather than severance pay.

With the studio in dire straits, going into administration could aid Team Bondi in paying its creditors, although its not actually known how the process will proceed, as for now the rumours are just that. If you're hoping to hear more about future developments for LA Noire, that will now lie with publisher Rockstar Games who still own the rights to the game.

Always sad when a studio goes down, my thoughts are with any who have lost their jobs after creating a fantastic game.

Great game which I really enjoyed. Liked there ideas, but think they raised the bar to high for themselves. I mean 7 years in the making. Hope there is no more DLC as I have traded my copy in, and have my 1400gs

Jeez we don't have many developers here in Australia, and the one in Sydney had to have bad administration and work ethic. They were our answer to big American studios.

@4 There will be one more DLC - the former PS3-exclusive "The Consul's Car Traffic Case". It won't come with any new achievements though.

That's a shame, as others have said, it's a shame when a developer goes under like that. At least some of the team will still have jobs.

Can we still hope for more DLC for LA Noire? Rockstar could still continue with it.

With all the stories I've read about how bad the employees were treated, I can't say I'm shocked. Bad management is just that, bad management.

Always a shame when a studio closes, and people lose their jobs :( Though I wonder how much of it is due to the reported poor control and work conditions set by the bosses...

I will say that I truly enjoyed L.A. Noir at first, but after a while it became a bit repetitive. Although the formula didn't really change throughout the game, it was still rather fun even when tedious. Still, it is sad that the company is folding after so much success. Hopefully they will all move on to bigger and better things.

@ 26

You can get it new from Newegg for $36.99 and used from Amazon for $24.99.
People should really stop buying games at MSRP from Gamestop.

On topic: L.A. Noire was a phenomenal game. Its a real travesty to see this happen to any dev team, especialy one who assisted in creating such a fantastic game. However, a lot of credit should also go to Rockstar for coming in and giving Bondi some developmental structure.

Well there's always the chance Rockstar will want some of the people who made LA Noire to stay with them, so don't be too shocked if they hire a few people from the developer. Rockstar probably doesn't want McNamara or any of the other hirer ups who created the bad working conditions, but writers, artists, and other major staff who helped create such an impressive game would surely be welcome.

So is "administration" the same as bankruptcy protection. I can assume it is based on the line that "going into administration could aid Team Bondi in paying its creditors" but I have never heard that term before

@33 While not exactly the same, "administration" is basicly the British/Australian/etc... version of bankruptcy. I had never heard the term till some of the EPL (English Premier League) teams started having financial issues.

@29: Don't think that. Rockstar own the rights to the game and I'm sure they'll keep it going. They have a fantastic team of developers so they'll do the game justice. :D

there is one major factor to them going into administration and thats their head of the company, according to alot of people he is difficult to work for and with.

rockstar were prepared very early on in l.a noir's production they were looking into making team bondi into rockstar sydney but as the game took longer and longer to make they realised that the guy was unworkable and pretty much burned all bridges with rockstar...

It pains me to see them shut down when they JUST released a brilliant game...that is L.A. NOIRE. Its Unbelievable how they were treated IF those rumors are true that were posted online by Team Bondi employees, i feel for them.

(Thanks Bondi for an AMAZING Rollercoaster Ride of LA NOIRE!)

This is an awesome game. I've never enjoyed getting full gamerscore for a game before, There is always somthing that makes it a chore, this is the 1 exception. Wish there was more content for it though. The fraud and burgalry desks sound great, but.....

I'm sure rockstar will make a sequal to such a popular title. They may even take over Team Bondai and have them make it. Replacing that arsehole head guy first, of course.

I can understand when a game fails, but I'm getting seriously sick of studios closing even after delivering a wildly successful game. I'm sure the producers are telling developers that their jobs are on the line when they know full well that they'll be fired anyway.
