E3 2011: Fable: The Journey – On-Rails or Not On-Rails, Who The Hell Knows!?
Written Tuesday, June 28, 2011 By Dan Webb

It is! It isn’t! That was the debate surrounding whether Lionhead’s new Kinect title, Fable: The Journey, was on-rails at E3 this year. After seeing it not once, but twice, here’s our verdict: we have no chuffin’ idea. Sure, it looks on-rails and in both presentations it pretty much played out in the same way, but if you listen to Lionhead and Microsoft Games Studio's figurehead, Peter Molyneux, then it isn’t. That’s where the problem lies though. Call me cynical, but ever since Molyneux said, and I quote, “I could name at least 10 features in games that I’ve made up to stop journalists going to sleep,” I can’t really take anything he says seriously or as gospel. Now, I don’t know what to believe when it comes to the musings of the iconic figure, so I’m sticking with what I can trust: my eyes. They’ve not let me down yet.

Fable: The Journey is the latest title out of Lionhead Studios and its first attempt at a Kinect title. It tells the story of your hero, who must carry a sick and weak Theresa – who many will know as the Zoë Wanamaker character from recent Fables – 300 miles to The Spire, with the corruption chasing you down every step of the way.

The multi-staged demo that we managed to get eyes-on with behind-closed-doors was very similar to what Microsoft took to its E3 press conference stage on the Monday before E3. The only real difference was that while the Microsoft press conference showing was bordering on the embarrassing, the behind-closed-doors – more relaxed demo – was only bordering on the tepid. Now I’m not sure whether that’s much of a compliment, but for us, after the press conference there was no winning us back. Turns out we were wrong, but only ever so slightly, there is hope now, but not much.

Fable: The Journey is all about freedom and magic, according to Molyneux, and the first stage of the demo saw our intrepid hero guiding a horse and carriage along a winding mountain path and then out into a much more open environment. To control the horse and carriage is a matter of just steering the horse with the reins as you would any horse in real life: leaning left and right to steer the corners, and flicking the reins to gain a little speed. It’s essentially a game of momentum and with rocks falling and the path winding left and right, players will have to avoid them and stay on track if they want to keep their speed up and escape the corruption that follows closely behind.

Molyneux refers to this section as the “travelling portion” of The Journey, which speaks for itself really, and as players dodge the various obstacles thrown at them, they must keep their momentum going and pick up magic along the way. Now this is where the confusion for most kicks in, with Molyneux telling the press that players can stop the cart – outside a mine for instance – and then go off the beaten path to explore. Unfortunately we didn’t see this with our own eyes, so for now, we’re sceptical about whether that’s even possible. We’ve been burnt too many times before, okay?

The second, more action-orientated aspect of the demo, saw our hero get off the horse and venture into a wooded area late at night. Again, this sequence was on-rails, just like the first one appeared to be. It’s here where the magical aspect of Molyneux’s spiel comes into fruition though and using a variety of hand gestures, the player must deal with an array of Fable enemies with the magic at hand – in this instance, mostly Hobbes of varying size and stature.

Now this is the aspect that I don’t think was given a fair demo on stage at Microsoft’s press conference, with it looking all too familiar to that shambolic Harry Potter showing at Gamescom last year. Fortunately, it’s nothing like that and at times actually borders on the clever. Players can use one hand to throw spells, use two hands at the same time, fire alternative shots with them, curve said spells with aftertouch, spread their hands apart to create a magic spear (although we suspect that the control of the throwing of said spear is minimal), power up spells by rubbing their hands together, thrust their hands outwards to use a push spell and even draw a circle to slow down time. Quite how long that’ll feel fun for though remains to be seen, you know, seeing as it’s on-rails and all. Or that’s what it looked like anyway. Twice. It just seems to lack the depth and variety that one would expect from a Fable title.

There are elements of Fable’s RPG systems in there, sure, but they’re barely noticeable, with Molyneux citing quest elements, branching mechanics, a morality system with consequences – where you draw life force from inhabitants of the land, choosing to just knock them out or killing them for more lifeforce – and even a levelling-up system was teased.

So who is The Journey aimed at then? Well, according to Molyneux, it’s aimed at a few different audiences. “Our job was to make a game that core people love and that people who are maybe too scared to play controller based games, can play,” said Molyneux. To us though, it’s pretty obvious that this isn’t aimed at the hardcore gamers as the gameplay doesn’t really seem to have the same depth that that audience would seek, but likewise, we can’t imagine that it’d win over even the most hardcore Fable fans either. I’m a Fable fan and I can’t say that at any point did the game intrigue me to the point where I would consider ever playing it. It seems like it’s very much a casual game where members of the same family can enjoy it, playing it from the comfort of their own couch, and sharing an experience together that’s maybe a little more mature than what Kinect currently offers now.

I generally think that the problem with Fable: The Journey though is that the gameplay itself just doesn’t look appealing in any way, shape or form. If I’m being completely honest, it looks like an attempt to prise a Kinect game out of a pre-existing franchise, essentially riding on the coattails of the franchise’s established name. Obviously it’s early doors for Lionhead’s Kinect game and for its latest Fable title, but for us, it’s doing very little to win us over at the moment.

Fable: The Journey is scheduled for a 2012 release.

I'm going to pass on this. Even thou I have a Kinect... I don't think Fable should be used on the Kinect. Plus Fable 3 was a big disappointment 2 wasn't that bad but the Dog annoyed the crap out of me. If they make this the classic way then maybe ill buy it

@3 Don't just promote remakes. What world would it be if we sat playing the games we always did and never anything new?

I personally completely saw it as a rail shooter, and that's exactly what I thought it was. I laughed when Peter said it wasn't, but I'm going to try and believe him.

Didn't know that some people are scared of using a controller, you learn something new everyday...

The ideas behind it are quite interesting with the way you control magic, but yet again another kinect game that i have no interest in.

#4 i'll play what I want, and I want a few games remade. I don't care what you or anyone else says about it, games like kotor shemenue, etc would be great as remakes.

OT: this looks terrible, and is definitely not going to sell. It doesn't appeal to the hardcore OR the casual audience. keep fable with a controller.

Looks like a good kinect game, but its probably on rails and Peter Molyneux is more than likely lying out of his ass like usual. I don't care if it is, but don't lie to the people who's going to be buying your game. I like Fable, but I don't like Peter Molyneux.

I don't know why people make a big deal if it's on rails or not. I used to pump tons of quarters into on-rails shooters with the gun and the foot pedal to take cover back in the day. If it's fun then great, if it sucks well then it sucks. I have a Kinect and when a game takes advantage of it well (Child of Eden) then its a lot of fun to use. But not all games should implement it, and to me this just doesn't look like a lot of fun. And I loved Fable 1-2.

My guess is this

On rails? Yes
Did Peter Molyneux knowingly give us false information? No

I think he's just an idiot and probably doesn't even know what on rails is.

@27 I agree, onrails isn't necessarily bad. It's the fact that Molyneux has admitted to big lies before, and that he's saying this isn't on rails when it clearly is. It's not the onrails that people are upset about, it's the lack of information / lying I think.

With all the "freedom of choice" and "making your character unique" that the whole Fable series boasts, I found them all to be extremely linear and the only unique part about your character is your outfit. Don't get me wrong, the games were sort of fun.. But I fart with more variety.

everyone knows molyneux is a fantastic salesman, but in the end his games always fall short due to technical problems that are far above the norm and various empty promises. why he would admit to lying about unrealistic or fake features in games, just to keep the media from falling asleep is astonishing. surely this should destroy any sort of credibility he has?

maybe im bitter as a completionist, but the fable 3 dlc achievements are unpredictably glitchy and there is no patch being made or whats worse; was ever planned in the 1st place, they just released it with all knowledge of the bugs. not exactly the sort of post release supprt i expect for a supposed AAA title. i mean did they even test unlocking that G?

as a salesman molyneux is(was) right on the money, hes made me part with my cash on day one for his latest game on various occasions. As a consumer this new title has to really deliver in order for me to bite again and so far its not looking good. im not saying il never again purchase one of his games, but lionhead have to really pull their finger out for me to buy one of their products.

Why make a game for " People who are to scared to play controller based games" ? So you can sell all but 100 copies( if that ) to a demographic that barely exists or brings in large enough revenue to warrent a game like this. I liked fable 3 but enough of the landlord, hand holding bullshit, and "on rails" magic attacks. Bring back the RPG elements that helped make Lionhead and thier strongest game a success. Peter Molyneux is killing his golden goose.

I wouldn't trust Peter Molyneux with a fork and knife in an outhouse. I was burnt on Fable one and two, didn't even ponder buying the third. So the only way I would entertain this game is if it was able to print legal tender so I can get my money back from Peter!

@ 43 - I wouldn't trust him with a potato gun with the safety on.

Molyneux really screws the pooch and sadly, he seems to be the pooch as well. The dude really needs to just say "Hey, my game COULD be great!" and leave it at that. The man apparently just doesn't know how to make the game even he wants. Nothing tops about how he tried to sell that Dog in Fable 2 as "The most revolutionary AI in history". You don't forget about something so revolutionary 4 hours into the game.

I don't understand why everyone is trashing this down. I understand its not what people want with fable, and I personally love fable all of them I have the freedom to do as I wish and thay makes me happy. This series is a great series, yes peter has lied about many things and yes this games is obviously on-rails but so what. Like many great arcade games back when they were on rails I.e time crisis. Granted not all games need it this does its the only way it'll work. And its a kinect title their hard ware and software aren't able to do free roam kinda things yet. But their trying to appeal to the casual audiences and the core, I am a core gamer but there are casual games that are fun. And I personally wanna get this it's a great concept and try and I'm a huge fan of fable. But the only games people who are core gamers care about is CoD granted the stories are great the multiplayer can be horrid. Just because a company tries to appeal to all audiences and it's something new and attempting something doesn't mean trash it instantly, and ags for Peter he needs to get his shit straight and stop with the lies.

Are you shiting me? Putting Fable on Kinect? No thanks ill pass. If it was multisensory, which means it can be played either on kinect or controller, then ill consider it. But for kinect only? Fuck this shit. Next thing you know, they will have Modern Warfare 4 for only Kinect or Halo 5 for kinect. But im just imagining so i know for a fact FPS games will not be in Kinect. The only FPS game i saw was Killzone for PS3 with the PS3 Move or whatever its called. FAIL.

They gotta stop trying to shoehorn these games into the kinect box. An option to use hand gestures for spells and exploring the environment would be cool but the kinect just isn't there yet. What it would be nice to have is and optional voice command system for spells or switching weapons or navigating options even.

As for Petey. Remember how buzzed they were about the dog in Fable? Or how your character could evolve? All oveblown

in my opinion this game could be fun for a couple of hours, but ill wait for fable 4, which they r working on, peter molyneux has already said that this is a spin off game and that they are making the next installment (fable 4) now

problem is that any franchise that tries to utilize kinect in this way is going to get shot down and people are going to be "Disappointed" blah blah, the truth is they are trying to make a kinect game in the fable universe and I don't think we should bitch and moan yet until we see it. You have to face the truth, that they are going to try and release more casual game versions for Kinect in an attempt to interest different people in their popular franchises, its just the way its going to go

I've been really disappointed in the direction that Lion's Head has been taking the Fable series. I honestly think that the original Fable has been the best game. Each subsequent game just feels like they're trying to hard to be cute and instead are just making it necessary to complete mundane tasks to be able to complete the story.

Constantly having to check your properties to make sure that everything is in good enough repair to continue to be profitable isn't fun, it's just tedious. I like what the Fable series offers, but lately I've been feeling like it's been afflicted with the same ailments as GTA: San Andreas.

Even though I have Kinect, I don't think I'll buy it unless it comes out on strictly console and strictly kinect

I've stuck up for Fable 3 in the past, but i have to totally agree that The Journey looks absolutely abysmal!.. A DEFINATE no buy if ever there was one.
I dont get the hating for Fable 2&3 though,i really dont,Especially No 3.I thought No 3 was easily the best in the series so far,& a big improvment over 2(apart from the overly simple npc interaction),with better, more tactically paced combat,More fluid movement & animation, better graphics with more detail on the characters & more of a sense of story.Plus more freedom of movement when playing online,& the ability to use your own character in Co-Op.Yep,i love Fable 3,great game.

I don't care if it's on rails or not.
Won't get it either way
