Brothers in Arms: Furious 4

E3 2011: Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 Preview – It’s Brothers in Arms, But Not As You Know It
Written Tuesday, June 14, 2011 By Dan Webb

World War II games have had their day. For so long were they overused, although that’s not the case in the last few years or so. So when Gearbox took to the stage at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference to announce their latest Brother in Arms title would not only be coming in 2012, but that it'll also be returning to the World War II era, admittedly I raised an eyebrow. But after seeing the game in action at this year’s trade show, this isn’t Brother in Arms as you know it. In fact, it’s not even World War II as you know it. This is balls to the walls crazy and a new take on the once oversaturated WWII era.

Brother in Arms: Furious 4 - in case you were wondering - shares very few similarities with the rest of the franchise. It isn’t meant to be a sombre journey into the lives of Matt Baker and his crew. It’s not even serious or factual. It is a shooter though, it follows a squad of soldiers and it is set during World War II, but that’s about it. That’s not to say the adventures of Matt Baker have been forgotten - far from it - but this is a new story. While this is Brother in Arms in name, it’s certainly not Brother in Arms in nature… and honestly, we’re more than alright with that.

At the core of Furious 4, like Borderlands, is a co-op experience, which Gearbox promises us will be available to play in single-player with AI, online and via split-screen (2-player though). It’s a simple premise with a less than simple setup: kill Hitler. Our demo at E3 this year saw us take the perspective of Montana, a huge tank of a guy wielding a chain gun, with the objective of infiltrating a town, which was oozing with Nazi presence and the is said to be housing Hitler himself.

Its visual style is not like anything you’ll have experienced in many other WWII titles, with bright colours, illuminated structures and fireworks galore dominating the horizon. With a bright coliseum and ginormous Ferris wheel towering above the quaint German town, and a huge beaming moon dominating the skies, you know already that this isn’t going to be your traditional WWII shooter.

Like many games are shooting for these days, Furious 4 adopts a scoring system of sorts, which then ties into the game’s upgrade/weapon unlocks/perks system, meaning that there will always be something to work towards. It’s also a shooter with a difference, meaning that Montana, instead of having grenades, will actually have bear traps instead, which then can be upgraded to becoming explosive bear traps by throwing a grenade into the mix. Not exactly the Allies weapon of choice in WWII, but I guess that’s the point.

One of the main features of Gearbox’s demo was what Gearbox call “action sequences,” which is essentially a fancy name for a 4-player co-op breach. As all four men line themselves up against the door, the foursome breach through the doors and let rip in a slow mo bevy of violence. Glancing around the room we see that from each perspective, each player has a different experience, whether that’s Montana wielding the chain gun or the chap behind us setting light to the unfortunate Nazi scum with a flamethrower. That’s not to say these sequences will always be the same, oh no, and in the second sequence we see the foursome perform this action sequence from the comfort of an open top car, disturbing a Nazi posse as they tuck into some fine wines and supper.

It wouldn’t be a WWII video game without a chainsaw, right? Wait… what!? Oh yeah, that’s right, this isn’t just any WWII game, this is a slightly wacky one. Mid demo, as you do, Montana the hulking beast, manages to bust out a chainsaw and slam it through the stomach of a few unfortunate Nazis who managed to get in the way. Fresh with a smiley face reticule and gallons of blood, it’s not a pretty sight for those with a weak stomach.

When I said that Furious 4 was over-the-top, I wasn’t kidding and the end sequence of the demo only went to highlight that, as Montana picks up a chain-gun style rocket launcher of sorts called a Fliegarfaust to take down a huge blimp overhead. Throw in a few heavy gunners wielding chain guns behind huge metal shields who require teamwork to take down and some jetpack Nazi fiends, and you honestly start to forget about the WWII genre and how oversaturated it’s become. It actually feels fresh.

With elements of Borderlands’ co-operative play and a smidgen of Team Fortress 2’s crazy squad based action – co-op, of course – whether Gearbox’s attempt to revisit the once stale era will pay off remains to be seen. The fresh take on the era and balls to the walls shooter action though was surprisingly refreshing, and couple that with some co-op action and hopefully Gearbox’s trademark humour, and Brother in Arms: Furious 4 could certainly be a turn up for the books. It’s like Inglourious Basterds but a hell of a lot more mental… if that’s possible.

Brother in Arms: Furious 4 is scheduled for a 2012 release.

Here come the "Waahhh, it shouldn't be called BiA"comments. And while I agree with that, it unfortunately is called that...so let's get over it already. This games looks like a lot of fun, and I play my games to have a good time. So bring it on.

@5 - That's why I said I agree. I don't like it either. I wish it was just Furious 4, but it's not. And as much as I dislike it, I really dislike all the bitching about it.

#5 mmm you have a point, it could`ve been a different name, so I guess the question we all want to find about is why did they named the game after a totally different franchise? :o

The core of the "Brothers in Arms" game play was the ability to set your soldiers somewhere, give them a specific objective like suppression or flanking, and watch as you eliminate enemies with no casualties, as well as the repercussions of sending soldiers somewhere and accidentally running a fire team into a tank, killing the squad. BiA seems to only be a title indicative of WWII now if they do intend to use the name for this game. If they just called it "Furious 4" no one would totally know when it was set if you didn't see game play but the "Brothers in Arms" tag tells you it is a WWII game. Unless they intend to do something to intertwine the stories, which a number of people like myself would dislike, they should drop the BiA tag from the title and use a new name. It could turn out to be fun nonsense, but it seems like they figured "It worked once, let's see if we can make some money now." It seems like a very risky gamble that's only appeal is it's WWII and you can do crazy shit that never happened. But it's not even like Inglorious Basterds in that respect, Inglorious Basterds was intended to be funny WWII nonsense but this is just jumping on the bandwagon of games like Borderlands. I'm not gonna just straight buy this after release, I'll probably wait for some reviews and maybe rent it. But it doesn't seem a surefire buy like the other games in the series.

I think people need to QQ about the whole BIA title thing because it's a new game and it's the developers choice, so just enjoy the game for what it is. A title only goes skin-deep, unless some stuck-up snobs will choose to not buy a game because of its title, which I highly doubt, even among the most pretentious of gamers.

They still need to drop the BIA from the title, just call if Furious 4, when i think of BIA i think of Baker, Red, Leggit, Courtland, the emotional story etc, i don't think of some TF2/Inglourious Basterds/Left 4 Dead/Borderlands hybrid.

Ill rent this (or not).

The thing is though, why even tie in a over the top, arcade shooter to the Brothers In Arms brand?

Reeks of desrperation if you ask me. Are they that unconfident the game wouldn't sell without having the moniker of an established series slapped onto it?

And no, I'm not bothered about the name. It just seems irrelevant to the actual game itself.

And yeah, WW2 has been done to death, even slapping "whacky" weapons on it has been done to death as well.

Looks fun...
as for the use of the Name Bothers in Arms...
Get over it!

Its just a damn name, the developers wanted to use it, let them.

People are crying over a name...really?
like I said Get over it...Its just a name, its just a game.
there are better things to be getting upset over.

and I for one am happy to see another WWII game, so sick and tired of seeing Modern Warfare every year.

I love how every comment that says "Looks fun" has negative votes. What? Are people not allowed to say "Oh, this game might be fun!" if you don't agree? I guess not. I'm gonna join them and say that this game actually looks like it's gonna be some fun, BiA or not. Go ahead, bring on the negative votes, trolls.

Why even call it "Brothers In Arms"? I know it's just a name, but it makes no sense. It would be like a new Star Wars movie coming out that makes no mention of any of the characters, the Jedi, the Sith, the Force, Lighstabers, Stormtroopers and rather than being a science fiction action drama it was a science fiction children's educational show that just happened to mention the name of a planet that sounds remotely similar to an obscure planet that was mentioned once in the entire Star Wars expanded universe.

What the hell is this? I love WWII games, and thought a new one would be really cool, but this is just stupid.

This is messed up. The other games were always so serious, with historic unlockables, scans of actual documents, clearly a lot of respect for the subject matter, etc. But what the hell is this crap? This is almost as bad as offensive as that godawful westernized main character in the failed Prince of Persia reboot. That's possibly the most obnoxious game character ever.

They should have just left it as Furious 4, adding the title BIA to this game is just an insult to the soldiers who fought in that squad.

They game itself looks awesome, but they really should not have slapped on BIA to the game

Get over it? BIA is not just a name, but about a squad of soliders who went through hell in the war. Slapping the name BIA on this game is an insult to those soldiers who pretty much all died while on that mission.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks awesome, but they should have kept BIA out of the title, its just not right making fun of the sacrifice those soldiers made

Brand names sell games. If they made an aeroplane game and called it 'Call of Duty: Dogfight' it'll probably outsell Ace Combat, Hawx or any other similar titles.
These people aren't your friends, they want your money. By strapping a well established series name to this game they're able to increase sales by a significant figure.

people are talking about how this is an insult to world war 2 but wolfenstein isnt? I didnt hear any unethical controversy when they made a game about killing zombie mutant nazis with ray guns in another dimension as bubble boy

on the other hand B in A is apparently(ive never played one) a serious game this argument looks like it could go either way but look at #44 hes got the reasonin for the company correct. I think its ok as long as they make up the characters and dont use historical names for any of the allied soldiers. and even most of the nazis

@ #47

Wolfenstein took the nazi interest into the occult and spun a fictional tale from it. Almost a "what if" scenario based on literature and fantasy.

Brothers in Arms uses real campaigns that happened in WW2, and prides itself on trying to create the actual areas using maps and photos taken from the time.

That's why I can understand some people's objection to it, even if I don't agree. My argument remains that it just seems totally pointless to have the Brothers in Arms moniker in the first place. It just serves to annoy the BIA fans, whilst serving no point in building a potential new franchise instead.

Am I the only one who views this as a Brothers In Arms' "Bad Company"? I don't think this will be game of the year by any means, but it looks like it could be fun. They've already said they're going to go back to the normal style for the next one so no need to flip out over it.

I'm liking it so far. Well I know people are angry on BIA name but spin-offs were a major thing in last gen, I guess the people are forgetting that.

It doesn't makes a difference to me, It's mostly done to cash on a game series e.g Resident Evil Gun Survivor, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks e.t.c

They already ruined the franchise with Hells Highway, Road To Hill 30 And Earned In Blood Were two of the best multiplayer games of all time they required genine skill and tactical awareness! They ditched all of that for Hells Highway trying to turn it into another Call of Duty and it failed massively, i was hoping they would learn from their mistakes but obviously not reading this has really dissapointed me!
