Microsoft Expected to Reveal 'Hardcore' Kinect Titles at E3
Written Monday, May 16, 2011 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

This year could be a big one for Kinect, if sources talking to Eurogamer is any kind of an indication, with at least 10 non-sequel titles reportedly set to be revealed at E3 next month. Apparently, one of these "won't be obvious" said one source, while another reports that Microsoft is looking to "serve the hardcore" with its line-up of Kinect announcements for E3.

There could be sequels on the cards too, with Rare apparently working on Kinect Sports 2 and Dance Central 2 could be "highly likely" for a holiday 2011 launch. Rare is reportedly planning a second Kinect title as well as Kinect Sports 2, which won't use any of the developer's existing properties like Banjo. There's also two more games from an anonymous developer in the pipeline for E3. Erm... OK then.

Microsoft might be planning to keep the hardcore audience happy at E3 this year, but the platform holder will still be revealing a family friendly title from its new London Soho Studio, which is "aimed at the younger audience". Furthermore, another new studio 'MGS Family' has been set up close to the company's Redmond HQ and will focus on "highly experimental gameplay" according to found job descriptions for the studio.

Finally, Forza World is rumoured to be in development at UK dev Playground Games, where ex-Codemasters Exec Producer Gavin Raeburn - of DiRT and GRID fame - is heading up the project. Turn 10's Forza Motorsport 4 has already been confirmed for Kinect.

Could Microsoft be addressing the complaints of the core gamers at E3 this year then? If all of this new information proves to be accurate, then the answer could be a resounding yes. Stay tuned!

luisga posted 2nd and said he was first, and then posted 4th and said he was third, so i guess he removed his two posts to save the embarassment of failing twice in two minutes.

We should see more about the upcoming Panzer Dragoon Orta and Steel Battlion classics from original xbox. Now revamped, looks even totally new editions for the Kinect @ E3 since they were revealed at tokyo gameshow last year. I've yet to buy the Kinect just cuz this lack of hardcore gaming. It does have my interest.

As long as their not strictly KINECT Only. Unless there is something at E3 that will absolutely blow me away, I WILL not buy Kinect. Make sure MS, that this Kinect push is like Sony's Move Compatibility with Killzone 3.

I don't NEED Move to play KZ3, but I can play the whole game on with it if I so choose.

Don't really think they should describe any activity you need to get infront of a camera to do as being 'Hardcore'.

Might lead to confusion ;)

If this is indeed true and MS does announce some games for Kinect that caters to us hardcores, then it might be time to get an Kinect sensor for my 360.

from rare Conker's Bad Fur Day ftw!! can you image it with kinect you can have where you got to do all rude obscene, gestures, remarks and pose. You could also have a two player verses mode.

Looking forward to seeing some of the new things they pop out for the Kinect this year. As of right now the only games I'm looking forward to are PowerUp Heroes, Steel Battalion 3, and Child of Eden. Everything else is up in the air or I don't have any information to go off of.

Kinect is missing a few core areas that it could easily capitalize on right.

Rail shooters: Time Crisis and House of the Dead could both be beneficial here (I would love a HotD compilation of 1-4 and even Typing of the Dead (not Kinect based, of course.) I could also easily see Capcom bringing over their Resident Even Chronicles games (I just hope the upcoming RE4 release doesn't utilize (or at least require) the kinect) like they did with the Wii version.)

Hack 'N' Slash: We already have Star Wars on it's way, but why should that stop other developers from releasing them? So long as the game stays free-form rather than having pre-recorded animations (I.E Wii Sports Resort Sword Fighting instead of Red Steel.) I can see a series like Dynasty Warriors attempting to use it, but I would prefer a game a little more... innovative. Something more along the lines of a Zelda title. (And while we're on the subject of Zelda, MS really needs to work on it's platforming library in general. We need more Mario and Zelda like games in general, Kinect-driven or not. So far we have Banjo and Kameo... Both disappointing.)

Flight Sim: Not serious simulators like MS Flight Sim: Special Terrorist Edition. I'm talking more like Crimson Skies and Dark Void. With a little bit of tweaking these would work well on the Kinect as well.

Mech titles: Much like Flight Sims, these would work well as well. There's a number of possibilities for how the controls would work from simple hand motion commands to the simulation of working an actual command console. If Steel Battalion can go from a 40-button controller to Kinect, than there's no reason games like Mechwarrior and Mechassault can't do it as well.

*All of these would be Kinect optional of course. I don't support the idea of non-Kienct owners missing out on these gaming experiences and even thouse with a Kinect would surely want to sit down and rest while playing some of the time.

@25 - Spot on mate, don't know why they haven't released stuff like HOTD on XBLA....
Thats what kinect needs, some XBLA lovin! lets be right, most if not all kinect games are small, watered down party games that could easily be downloadable - Joyride being the perfect example because it was going to BE a free arcade game!!

It will be interesting to see if M$ can pull something out of the bag for kinect that isn't a Wii clone like everything at the moment.

@5: They already did. As much as the fanboys want to deny that it's a Banjo game, they already made one a couple years ago.

House of the Dead would be a good idea. Maybe we'd finally see the 4th title get ported already.

On-rails shooter would work pretty well I think. There's Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii and wasn't there a Dead Space on-rails shooter for the Wii? Release them as 29.99 budget titles for Kinect. I'd possibly rent those...if I bought the Kinect.

Viva Pinata is screaming for a Kinect game.

Anyone remember CarnEvil, the carnival themed rail shooter from the mid-90s. I'd play a sequel to that.

It's a shame Microsoft doesn't want to make games for the core audience that wants nothing to do with Kinect. Oh well, at least Sony hasn't forgot about that audience.

Ehhh, whatever, i have kinect and honestly i love it for video chat, voice commands when watching movies and finally just showing it off to people who dont have an XBOX or arent gamers at all adn seeing their faces when I show them what it can do. The games arent all that great for a "hardcore" gamer. However, I will say that my kids do get some use out of it. Give me a controller anyday though.

I'm believe this when I see it. The only Kinect title that I'm looking for is Child of Eden especially when you don't need a Kinect to play it.

@ 34. Agreed.

@ 39. He's talking about Kinect games that are for the Hardcore Gamers while I don't see the Kinect having any of those games because it only has Exercise and Wii shovelware games.

@36 That's what I use my PS3 for too.

@39 Please name those games. I'm not talking multi-platform games that I could also play on the PS3 like BF3 or COD. What other 360 exclusives are upcoming that aren't Kinect oriented after GoW3? When's the last time MS announced a new IP for core gamers that has nothing to do with Kinect? I'm not trying to make it sound like I hate Kinect, I don't, I just don't have any interest in Kinect. I'd like to see MS make an effort towards giving core gamers something new that's not Kinect enabled and isn't another Halo or Gears game.
