Splash Damage’s Neil Alphonso Talks Brink, Console Development & Misleading Gameplay Trailers

I’m not sure what it is with Splash Damage and us, but every time we’re pencilled in to interview them for 10 minutes, the chats tend to go on well past that. At Gamescom in 2009, we sat down for a 15 minute chat with Richard Ham, Splash Damage’s Creative Director, and it lasted a good 45 minutes. At Bethesda’s BFG Showcase in Utah last week we sat down with Neil Alphonso for a scheduled 10 minute chat... 20 minutes later and we were still chatting... This then is the first part of that 20 minute chat with the game’s Lead Designer.

Because we know everything about Brink there possibly is to know – if you don’t leaf through the archives, we’ve got you covered – we spoke with Alphonso about console development, whether they’re secretly wanting the new console announcements and whether publishers owe a duty of care to their customers by not misleading them with super high-res gameplay trailers... especially for the console versions of the game. Oh, and much more.

Check back tomorrow for the second part of the interview, where we talk alienating new players with unlock systems, LA Noire and so much more.

I had to shut this video off half way through because is I had to listen to him say "like" or "you know" one more time I was going to lose it.

I can't wait till this comes out but I don't know if I'm feeling the character design. It makes the game look outdated. Oh well it's not stoping me from picking it up.

I was really hyped for this game until I started seeing some of the "perks" and now I cautious as I am hoping that it is balanced right. Still gonna pick it up at launch though.

I will most likely buy this since most of my friends are. Gamefly has been slow to send new releases in a timely manner these days anyway.

Perks and changing classes on the fly. Always hated it. Wish that if you picked class at the beginning you actually would have to be stuck with it all the way through end. Might be not fun, but definitely brings "tactical" and "team" into play. Be as it is anyone can be anything at anytime... Not sold on this one yet...

@ #1 - give the guy a break, he was clearly abit nervous. He's probably never done an iverview like that before.

I really liked that fact that he said its more about the gameplay than how it looks on different platforms.

Bethesda has been doing some serious promotion as of late...how about some New Vegas DLC, then?

I'm still very much on the fence with Brink. I had it pre-ordered for the extra content, but I'm still not 100% sure on what I'm buying exactly.

I'm looking forward to this. I commend splash damage for their creativity as far as the mesh of single player/multiplayer. i hope it plays well.

I dont get how people feel the character models make the game look dated?? To me, the graphics look pretty fresh

ive been very hyped since i saw it in a presentation at the 2nd Eurogamer expo.
A year passed, it got delayed a few times, then got to play it at second Eurogamer after waiting 2hours.
Now im completely usure. The mission wheel didnt seem to have enough missions. Ppl where standing next to each other with full auto gun, and WAITING for each other to die. Also, the mission GPS was sending me in circles. I really hope these issue are fixed, and gameplay is less sparodic, and now packed with more ingame missions for each class per round.
Because i felt like i was going "Ok ive done A,B, D and now C... i guess ill go kill some enermies.."

@13 - People say that because they got their head up their ass and don't appreciate anything other than the "hyper-realistic" graphics. In my opinion, I would rather see solid gameplay and creative art style over some silly waste of data on ultra realistic graphics in a game that doesn't need them.

Best example: Borderlands. Half way through they went from super-realism to all cel shaded graphics with a hand drawn effect. I don't think I would have enjoyed that game as much if it tried to lend itself to realistic graphics.

To me, Brink is going to fill the Battlefield/Team Fortress void nicely. I'm expecting a great game and I have the game on pre-order waiting for that May 10th launch to roll around.

@11 NV DLC is on the way. 4 have been planned and they're working on them. Also, an announcement regarding them is planned over the next week or two to coincide with the release of the latest patch.

Whatever Bethesda touches turns to gold. I think regardless of any possible failings (i personally think this game looks brilliant and cant wait, counting it down) Bethesda will come through, n splash damage will shine along side.
