Though a welcome feature, I still feel that I'll more than likely be walking/running as my main source of getting around (with the eventual QT here and there). Either way, we can be sure that they'll look pretty as hell if mounts are indeed included.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 02:59 PM
I think it's great that they can laugh at themselves! What about Dragon armour? To ironically make the battles against them even harder! I think that would beat the Horse armour!Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:00 PM
@#1 I agree, I love to walk around and take everything in as I go around their beautiful game.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:01 PM
Ah yes, I can't wait to ride my majestic steed over the frozen plains of Skyrim only to have a dragon swoop out of the sky and grasp my equine friend in its razor-sharp talons. I'll wave goodbye as my horse is swept off like a mouse in an owl's grasp. If only I had bought that horse armor.....Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:20 PM
I wouldn't cry if mounts weren't in the game, but as cratures they are awesome. It's no stable without horses, you know :)Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:21 PM
For potential movie like moments, like something from Lord of The Rings, and like the guy above's little story, horses would be awesome but I do agree with 1 and 2 that I prefer walking everywhere. Of course I can't wait to play this game.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:22 PM
I mean the guy who's now two above me, the guy who's one above me as quick!Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:23 PM
I would really love to have a horse in the game. It would most certaintly be an addition. Although, I never road a horse in Oblivion due to the lag is caused. But that won't be a problem in Skyrim!Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:23 PM
@ 2 "What about Dragon armour? To ironically make the battles against them even harder! I think that would beat the Horse armour!" You've heard about scales right dude?Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:24 PM
Horses where great in the game! I'd love to be able to fight properly on horseback. Although..... Maybe we will get other mounts...Dragon anyone? I can dream. ( I wonder how long it would take blueprotoss to comment about them copying red dead redemption if they make an appearance :) )Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:26 PM
Mounts would be cool, I just would rather see other things put in the game in their place, unless you could use them to attack of courseTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:26 PM
Oddly enough, I didn't really use any of the horses in Oblivion. I used traveling as a way to up my sneak skill. Plus to gather alchemy ingredients, and to fight, you'd have to get off and on the horse over and over. So after trying the horse for a little while, I never used them again.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:27 PM
they betta stop with the dumb down bullshit first yesterday with the news that they changed the skills(I love the fact that IN ELDER SCROOLS games when u jump or run u get betta at it but its gone now no more fuck!)and now they say that horses will probably not be in the game it makes me mad fuck I neva used fast travel in oblivion(300hours+ on that game) becuz of the horses but look at fallout after 70hours of going from the same place to same place it got long and boring so I started to only fast travel and I dont want SKYRIM tio be like fallout so please we need to let bethesda know how much the horses are important in a big open worldTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:41 PM
#13 "horses" was all I got from that |:Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:43 PM
Actually working my way through Oblivion for the first time (I know, I guess I live in a cave). Never really bothered with the horses. They seem to move at about the same speed as my character. Either way, Skyrim is gonna be amazing!!Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:53 PM
Shadowmere, only horse I used in Oblivion. Until he wandered off into the wilderness never to be seen again. And the unicorn of course, until I *possible spoiler* slayed it.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 03:55 PM
I could care less about horses. I was thinking more about flying mounts. Maybe even a Dragon that you could use as a mount after defeating it. Nothing will top creating a sweet levitation spell in Morrowind though.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 04:03 PM
@17 Yes, Morrowind was awesome, I still play it. Like some have said before me, I think a dragon mount would be a nice addition to the game, better than horses at least.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 04:09 PM
@#13 That's a LOL:-) Still I would lvoe to see horses, especially since no fantasy world is complete without horses....Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 04:17 PM
@#18 Yeah. My GOTY and Bible are nver far away. That game = freedom to me. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. I understand ruling mounts out. If you could attack from them some way they'd be much more useful.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 04:38 PM
How about we ride Dragons? That would be awesome.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 04:45 PM
You should definitely be able to ride those giant trolls, and spiders for sureTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 05:28 PM
The horses were terrible in Oblivion. They're better off left out unless they can do them properly.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 05:40 PM
@22 That would be epic... Piggy-backing a giant troll has always been my dream in an Elder Scrolls game. :PTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 07:33 PM
@13 Make sense please.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 08:03 PM
WTF! First we obviously don't get to even choose our own 'Name,' then they strip the 'Stats,' then they strip the 'Skills' and go with a ridiculous Perk system, now they contemplate removing horses?! This is going to be a watered-down version of Fallout. RPG's and the Elder Scrolls in particular, were always about almost believable Worlds. Bethesda needs to get out of the Publishing market and back into hands-on Development. Not good ..Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 08:20 PM
Dear stupid person above me. The stats were superfluous, the skills are still there, you can still name your character. Please think before you post. ThanksTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 08:35 PM
RPGs' are all about micromanaging your Inventory. Stop quoting Corporate rhetoric and realize that ALL of the Elder Scroll games are STILL being played because of the great system already in place. Even Modder's left that alone for the majority. So stop with the BS, plz.Tuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 08:38 PM
I misread the title and was under the impression bethesda was mounting elder scrolls xDTuesday, April 19, 2011 @ 11:16 PM
Either way I don't really care. I imagine I'll be having loads of fun with this game regardless.Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 12:43 AM
@13 Ever heard of a thing called a period? Or school for that matter? I'd look into it if I were you. OT: I never used the horses much, preferred to explore by foot or fast travel. Not to mention Shadowmere ran away on me. Might consider using them if horseback combat was involved.Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 02:06 AM
@13 Although I didn't enjoy your rambling, disjointed English, I do agree with your assertion. I preferred to walk everywhere as fast travel isn't in keeping with the spirit of an open world game, in my opinion. So I would like to see horses make it into the game.Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 03:31 AM
@13 They took out skills that Morrowind had for Oblivion but I still played that for several months and enjoyed it. Pretty sure the other article yesterday said there was going to 18 skills in Skyrim. Oblivion had 21 I think so theres another skill they've taken out. Still least athletics is gone those skill trainers aint going to get my gold now. With arcobatics though least it saves running up the middle steps in Bruma to jump off a wall and grind it up that way. But after getting to 100 on it did you really hop across the lake more than once?Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 03:32 AM
so,they are undecided whether to put Horses into the game?..the game that has been in production for 5 years and is out in 6 months??...is this a windup?Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 03:57 AM
I want to ride dragons!Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 07:52 AM
We need horses ! In Elder Scrolls world, there can't be no horses ! They make you feel like you're part of the world. I really loved to ride a horse in Oblivion, I hope I'll be able to do the same thing in Skyrim :DWednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 09:14 AM
I'm quite glad they gotten rid of the acrobatics at least. As fun as it was jumping and defying physics, by floating for ages if it was magic related fine. If I read correctly from the "Into the dragons den" review. You have the option of sprinting now, so more realism for me right there. Hopefully you see more reaction from fatigue and no athletics to make you speedy gonzales. Anyways I love how 4 put it, I myself picked different times to ride my horse for certain events in my gameplay it made it more for me. Regardless I'll lose myself in the world they offer mount or none. I alwaysWednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 09:15 AM
* I always love bethesda for whatever they do (bah don't know why this line wasn't included)Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 09:37 AM
Not too fussed about the mounts tbh. They need to add an extra dimension to the gameplay to be worthwhile, which, in this game, means a full mounted combat mechanic. I don't think we'll get horses this time around. horses were irritating in Oblivion because you had to dismount every time you wanted to fight, they would get in the way during combat, wouldn't fight back, and couldn't carry anything. A straight up pain in the ass. They need to be able to defend themselves strongly, for there to be mounted combat and to be an extra source of carrying capacity. If they don't add them as mounts though, I'd be interested in seeing an equivilant as a tag along for the load bearing, a pack mule or something. Interesting side note, Horses ARE in Skyrim right now, check the trailer, in the scene of the small settlement by a windmill, there is a horse. So they ARE included, it's whether them being mounts is useful which is the big question.Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 10:58 AM
@# 33 No. I created a jump spell and jumped across the whole map. Are they really not letting you name your toon? And is this info about cutting stats and skills down true? I loved Morrowind. Never played Arena, Hammerfall, or any mods really because I've always been a console gamer. I liked Morrowind more than Oblivion and I'm hoping the Skyrim doesn't follow this trend. Either way it'll be a Day One Collector's Edition purchase by me.Wednesday, April 20, 2011 @ 11:02 AM
Sorry for double post but: @#39 Any game I've played where you can ride a mount there is no added capacity for carrying items. Gun, WoW, Call of Juarez, Red Dead Redemption, etc. no extra capacity. At most you could level up a horses stamina and health. All you really need to do is be able to fight from it to make it extra helpful. Fast travel has made it all but obsolete though so it wouldn't make an impact at this point but would be fun as hell.Thursday, April 21, 2011 @ 10:32 AM
@33 "With arcobatics though least it saves running up the middle steps in Bruma to jump off a wall and grind it up that way. But after getting to 100 on it did you really hop across the lake more than once?" For me I spent a total of 13 hours jumping from the top of the Wizards Tower Steps to the path at the base of the steps to level up my Acrobatics for one of my many charters. 13 Hours I look at that number and still cry why do you ask because, just like you said after getting my skill up after sleeping and leveling I spent all of 5 mintues jumping off the surface of the nearest lake and that was it.Thursday, April 21, 2011 @ 12:43 PM
#32 thank u 4 seeing past my bad written english(sory but im a French Canadian)and agreing with me about the fact that a open world game like ES needs horses.Friday, April 22, 2011 @ 06:47 AM
@41 Just because they haven't had them, doesn't mean that it's not needed. I can't comment on Gun and CoJ, but in RDR, extra capacity wasn't needed (so I expect they'll be similar) and in WoW there were alternatives, you could increase your own carrying capacity to 6 slots of 24 if you so desired. We don't have that here, and if previous ES games and FO3/NV are anything to go by, we'll be in a position to be always finding more loot than we can carry. Now, I'm not saying we should have unlimited carrying capacity, but to be able to acquire stronger horses or mules that can carry extra loads for us is a good thing. Hell, in Morrowind people would just spam mark and recall spells to constantly carry every ounce of loot they could find. Yes mounted combat would be useful and fun, but how does that negate carrying capacity? How does that make it worse? It doesn't. In New Vegas your companions could carry extra loads for you. And other games have done it too, old Dungeon Siege games for example allowed you to add a pakc mule to your party. You add horses, you really need extra carrying capacity. It wouldn't be difficult at all to give them that function. But with that said, I DO also think that mounts need to have mounted combat otherwise they're pretty redundant, unless they can be left on their own and relied upon to defend themselves well, unlike in Oblivion where they were bloody awful and a pain in the lumps.Monday, April 25, 2011 @ 03:15 AM
Considering how mountain heavy this game is may be, I wouldn't want horses if it means climbing vertical ledges at absurd angles, that just takes away from the experience. Plus, getting off every couple of seconds to kill the passing wolf, goblin, etc. gets old to the point that I just start avoiding outdoor combat altogether, which defeats part of the purpose of ignoring fast travel in the 1st place. Good to see that almost half a decade later Horse Armor jokes are still pumping strong, if only Street Fighter received that much scrutiny.Tuesday, April 26, 2011 @ 02:20 AM
@41 and 44. Two Worlds had a function for loading up your loot onto your horse, which was very useful. Particularly for dungeons, you can just arrive with an empty horse, clear the dungeon, load it up and ride off with everything; saves having to go back and forth. Similar idea to having a house or chests that you can load with your treasure, expect portable. Fantastic! But I can see how it may be awkward to travel in Skyrim. Oblivion was generally quite flat, and even then I stick to the roads on horseback as going off-road could be glitchy. Skyrim looks like it is set in the highlands, and it’s not very easy to ride horses up a mountain (like 45 said). However I would still like to have the choice of using the horse to travel quickly between towns so I can still see the world go by, and then go on foot to explore off-road. (Fast travel just seems a waste on a TES game, so much effort goes into the world that I just want to see it all) I liked the way you could whistle for your horse in Two Worlds (as much as everyone seems to hate this game due to its graphics, it still had some really good ideas). Something similar would be good in Skyrim as my horse in Oblivion had a habit of running off and getting lost. Perhaps a horse summoning spell to retrieve your lost mount?

Horses and Oblivion – especially those with armour! – have become a bit of a running joke in the games industry in this console's life cycle, but despite that, Bethesda aren’t 100% committed to putting them in Skyrim just yet. They’re “looking good right now,” but Bethesda’s Game Studios’ Game Director, Todd Howard warns that if they’re not adding anything to the game, they’ll be cut.
“As far as mounts and horses, it is something that we’d really like to have,” said Howard. “We’re messing with it. So we’re definitely not ruling it out.”
“We wanna make sure it’s a gameplay addition, you know, they’re not just like there and feel like klugey... Horses have come a long way in games,” Howard notes, clearly referencing Red Dead Redemption, “So we want to make sure we’re paying off on that. As I say, it’s looking good right now, but if we feel it’s not adding, we’ll probably yank the feature if we think it makes the game better.”
Before any quick-witted journalists could even respond to that, Bethesda Softworks’s VP of PR and Marketing, Pete Hines, chimes in, “If there’s no horses, what do we sell armour for?”
“We’ll still sell horse armour, that’s the joke, right!?” jokes Howard.
“That’s actually funnier,” chuckles Hines, before Howard spots an opening in the market...
“And then later on we’ll sell you the horse,” he jokes.
So horses or mounts aren’t 100% confirmed yet, but I think on this showing that it’s 100% certain that Hines and Howard will be taking to the road with their stand up routine. If not, I’m stealing their jokes!
Elder Scolls V: Skyrim is scheduled for a 11th November 2011 release. Check out our in-depth preview from yesterday as well as Howard’s opinions on the new engine and skill streamlining.
