Eidos Montreal Address Fan Feedback and Make Deus Ex: Human Revolution's Highlighting Optional

When Deus Ex purists saw that targets, objectives and other interactive objects were highlighted in yellow outlines, they were sure to make themselves heard, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal took notice.

As a result, the studio has addressed the game's Augmented Reality system, by making the yellow outlines entirely optional. In short, you can switch the highlighting on and off at your own convenience.

The Augmented Reality highlighting was included to increase immersion, in keeping with the cybernetic augmentations of the game's hero, Adam Jensen. But, based on fan feedback, you can now turn off the outlines if you want. The system works!

Check out the video below for a more thorough explanation from Eidos Montreal. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is out on August 23rd in North America and August 26th in Europe.

Good decision. I'd probably play with them on, but it annoys me in games when you can't turn stuff like this off.

Annoying things in games being optional. I like that idea.

I had no problem with it in the first place. Actually I am pretty sure this was present in previous games, but don't take my word on that. Still as long as it's an option, to each their own:-)

Nice decision. Listening to the fans AND offer the possibility to switch of any optionnal features in a game are two things that every developper should do ^^

I was fine with the object highlighting, they did a similar thing in the original game.

The thing that did bother me in the prior videos though was the button prompts when you look at a ladder or a door- "PRESS A" etc. That is absent in the above video so hopefully they were just for demo purposes and not as prominent in the finished game

I thought the highlight looked pretty good, will probably play with highlight on.
But I like that they put in some extra work and added an option for it.
Hopefully it'll be as much fun as it looks to be. =)

reminds me of runner vision in mirrors edge. One of those things that i hated since it made me feel like the game was being played for me, but it could be turned off so i didnt have to dislike the game. GJ devs.
