Why MyGamerCard.net Has Been Shut Down
Written Saturday, February 26, 2011 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

Hugely successful gamertag-linking community site, MyGamerCard.net, has had to cease operation following a difficult decision made by site founder 'Morgon', following a lack of support from Xbox.com. The service enabled you to connect your gamertag to create a unique Xbox Live calling card for yourself, share gamerscores with the rest of the Xbox Live community and compete in gamerscore leaderboards.

Originally started around a month before the launch of Xbox 360 in 2005, MyGamerCard.net launched on the same day that the console released in North America on November 22nd, introducing the first gamerscore leaderboard, with several thousand gamertags soon spiralling to millions in a relatively short period of time since its inception.

"For over five years, MGC has served the Xbox Community in ways that I had never imagined," says Morgon in a farewell statement. "What started as a "test of concept" for a few Xbox.com forum users led to a rollercoaster ride that has been one of my life's greatest adventures.

"When I started working on the code that would eventually become the heart of MGC, I certainly did not imagine that nearly five million unique GamerTags would end up using it. Nor could I ever fathom that the handful of requests that saturated my home cable modem (and kept me from playing Halo 2!) would eventually require five servers to handle the load of thirteen million daily requests!"

Apparently, a gradual loss of interest in its community from Microsoft lead to a steady decline in support for MyGamerCard.net, which has ultimately resulted in the shutting down of the site and service altogether.

"However, in the past few years, that love for community has been lost by Microsoft," Morgon's statement continues. "The closure of customer-to-company community-centric interfaces (that weren't tech support (no disrespect towards the awesome @XboxSupport!)) was a huge blow for Xbox fans. Especially those who really felt like they had a connection to the company they were spending their disposable income on. Similarly, the Xbox Community Developer Program - the program that was essentially created for MyGamerCard and a select few similarly broad-minded community projects - stagnated, with extremely few updates or new data features (despite constant requests), and waning communication as Xbox was not allocating any time to the program.

"To make matters worse, while most of us who insisted on playing by the rules (Terms of Use) of the XCDP, others were showing their lack of respect and selfishness by setting up 'screen scraping' mechanisms to gather additional data from the Xbox website that are otherwise unavailable to us," Morgon adds. "If you've ever been to Xbox.com and noticed how slow it is - they are the reason why. These sites - some of them for-profit corporations - benefit from having the type of information that the rest of us had been asking for, which quickly started eating away at our traffic. Repeated discussions with Microsoft regarding this issue have gone largely unacknowledged (and certainly un-actioned) by anyone beyond my initial contact."

'Scraping' is used by a variety of websites to gain gamertag information without permission - not this site, we hasten to add - and in doing the right thing and "playing by the rules," as Morgon puts it, MyGamerCard.net has seemingly been increasingly overlooked by Xbox.com over the years, failing to garner the support it clearly deserved.

"Eventually, the rise of these websites, coupled with the declining advertising ecosystem, pushed my out-of-pocket expenses upwards as advertising alone couldn't maintain the (quite modest, comparatively) monthly hosting fees," notes Morgon. "Eventually, the decision had to be made to take down the site. It wasn't (and still isn't) a decision I've made lightly; proof of that is the simple fact that I've been running half of my monthly costs out-of-pocket for over a year now. But despite the sadness of having to shut down this part and chapter of my life, there's a part of me is a little relieved that there's a set 'closure' to all of it, rather than infinite abandonment."

MyGamerCard.net will be sorely missed by its community - which includes some of the staffers here at X360A - so we wish Morgon and MGC all the best for the future.

"Thank you again for your praises, suggestions, and criticisms; awards, interviews and invites; and Tweets, Friend Requests, emails, and posts," Morgon concludes. "But most of all, thank you for being a part of MyGamerCard!"

You can read Morgon's complete farewell statement on MyGamerCard.net

@7 I'm sure that was due to a lack of interest.

I doubt MS will open their eyes even to this, because of the lack of interest in community. They have certainly changed over the years.

It was like a daily routine for me to use the site, and it will definitely be missed.

@11 exactly. Companies are so concerned with money now. MSG might not have brought a profit, but i doubt it was a million dollar loss. Why let a site get shut done if it makes millions of your consumers become engrossed in something that will eventually lead them to buy more games

I hope everyone realizes how much more this means to the gamerscore community than just the closure of MGC.net. The lack of community support is a huge blow to the future of other community based gamerscore sites. Let's raise a glass in memory of MGC and hope this helps Microsoft ses the error in their ways.

@24 - While I do have a Raptr account myself (which I don't use very often either), I believe it is one of the 'scraping' sites Morgon is referring to which helped to contribute to the demise of MGC. That and TA.

It's a shame really - while the forum was never as good as x360a's, it's been a very useful site over the years, and it's a little worrying to see it go.

I have to admit, it was a great site when it first started and i used it alot but much better sites arose later and MGC just didnt keep up, yeah lack of support from Xbox.com was one factor but there site features didn't change that much over the 5 years and i just didntt see the point in using it anymore since sites like X360A and Trueachievements were much better for my gamerscore needs.

@Lothra - That's the whole point though. TA and numerous others do stuff that sites - like us and them - who play by the rules can't do, rendering them at a disadvantage. If we wouldn't have expanded early, we might have followed Morgon, true story ;)

MGC was good for a while, but once my played games reached 30+ it wasn't accurately scanning. It was extremely irritating to log on and see that the last four days of gaming hadn't been updated at all. As sad as it is to see a community site dissolve, I can't say that I'll miss it. Yeah well. what ya gonna do. I doubt alot of people will seriously miss it. This site is all that you need anyways. maybe throw in TrueAchievements but thats it. Xbox.com is a slow POS and they dont seem to care. cant send messages through IE8 or 9 and they make the crap?

Only thing i already miss is the gamercard as the signatures in THIS site. Seems very bland now. It was nice to see what the last 5 games people were playing, their score, etc and all that in accordance with the posts they were talking in.... you know what i mean.

Sad for MGC.net, but i am only gonna miss the signatures here !

Here's to them. MGC was a pretty solid service, especially considering it was for free. I felt they were useful, especially for linking your card to sites like this.

A pity, but I can understand the creators thoughts in shutting it down.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday. All I can say to Microsoft is "Son, I am disappoint." There used to be a time where I would praise you, and when discussing Sony and trophies, I would say "They need to be more like Microsoft and give tools to the community." But no, Microsoft. It seems you have decided to become more like Sony instead of Sony becoming more like you. Truly a shameful decision, I must say.

Hopefully this will be a wakeup call for Microsoft, and they'll step up and get more legit tools to the community. I guess that's the best we can hope for at this point.

Meh, I can't say I'm sad to be honest. I only ever used it for sigs at most. I'm sure prolific visitors might be upset, but overall, I gotta agree with #82. Nothing of value was really lost. It's not like you can't just look up peoples gamertag on xbox.com or something.

really a shame its gone you old check you World & Country % Complete Ranking just little Tidbits that Xbox.com just doesn't have. I was just on there not much more than 36hrs ago looking at my Arcade games & Wondering why I never Completed "Worms" & I ended up getting about 5 achievements. Today its closed down.

Very ominous to me. My Friends store just up & Shut its doors which was surprising, there was no prior warning, just *poof* Gone just like XBL. I guess Microsoft is just cutting is losses with MGC by not supporting it, & People don't have as much disposable income to donate to site now Like Wikipedia had a thing leaked about thinking they wouldn't get enough donations this time around.

it's Shit all over. Even in Cyberspace.

MGC was actually the first ever 360 site I ever used nearly four years ago and have checked out my stats about once a week ever since. It sucks to see it go.

While one hand it is a bad thing that some of these sites have not been following the rules for information collecting, on the other hand they have been able to offer a lot of things to achievement and stat hunters that don't seem possible without their methods. Regardless, I will still use these sites but it is unfortunate that this has made it so MGC had to close its doors.

I don't know what I would do if I ever lost x360a.

We all know how embarrassing it can be asking randoms for help with annoying achievements!

Sucks to see a good site have to shut down. I liked being able to look at the leaderboards on there. I also liked having the gamercard in my signature on forums.

Is this why everyones gamer card isn't showing up with their user ID's? If this has nothing to do with it, how do we link our gamer cards to appear when we post things like this!?
