Avatar Kinect Demonstrated in Video Form

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled Avatar Kinect at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, showcasing the application's facial tracking and other social features, but this new video captured by TechFlash, demonstrates these features in a bit more depth, showing an example of one of the chat shows you can host and upload to Facebook to share with friends.

Avatar Kinect is being dubbed a "social experience" by Microsoft, and this video briefing shows how your Avatar can be brought to life as you speak and move, tracking your facial expressions in a fairly detailed manner, following the movements of your mouth (as best it can) and mimicking more subtle motions like raised eyebrows or a furrowed brow.

The video also shows one of the 15 stages being put to use, with an impromptu Avatar performance complete with a light show, while the chat session involves two American presidents dropping in and out for a quick chinwag with the host using Avatar Kinect's social chat feature.

Check out the video of Avatar Kinect in action, then look out for the free social app as it's set to arrive on Xbox Live for Gold subscribers later this spring.

I'd rather chat while I'm playing a real game. Even if we're playing something different like me and my friends always do.

It's really awesome when things mess up, LIVE!

Avatars are so fucking pointless and this looks even more useless than Pervstation Home.

Anybody that spends real money on their avatar is a fucking moron.

I feel like I'm watching a bad foreign flick with the whole lip movement not matching the voice. This shows that MS isn't using the Kinect correctly and they still want to do gimmicks. I'm so glad that I didn't want to get Kinect in he 1st place. Btw MS if you want Facial tracking then talk to Sony or another Developer that works on Games/Movies.

It looks relatively fun to use i can see people and their friends laughing it up on this, but the question is how much, plus that and the price of a kinect sensor. I want it but it isnt going to happen.

@6, right....you do know when you pay for avatar items you are supporting xbox? and seeing as you probably pay for xbox live, your statements are completely and utterly hypocritical and i deem you idiot sir.

and

@7 this is actually a step forward for testing kinects abilities, soon we shall probably see games where we can animate our characters faces in multiplayer. You have to start somewhere. Oh and saying xbox live work faster? if it's slow for you.... then your internet is slow. you cannot make something faster that utterly relies on the users (that is you just in case you didn't know....) connection speed and stability. All in all, think before you say, before you give people brain aneurysms for being so stupid.

What a waste of time. I'm sorry, but this is exactly the kind of stuff that made the Wii so gimmicky and pointless, and I was hoping Microsoft would shy away from gimmicks and actually try to add Kinect into games in new and useful ways. Nothing to see here.

This has to be the most unappealing things to be released for Kinect. If it's free it will be worth checking out but if they're going to put a price tag on it then they're just idiots. I think it could be a hilarious app for the Xbox but nothing more than that. This is actually what I thought video kinect was. :x

For all the haters out their stating this is just a pointless gimmick, What do you expect? They are just not going to *poof* have the greatest thing the world has seen overnight. Just as #11 said they have to start somewhere.

To the others that think this is a waste of time, you need to go to a store and buy some rope and well hang yourself.... Not everything is a waste of time, as this could lead to even more improvements in the gaming industry, you have to start small to move onto bigger things. This is just one part of what Microsoft is trying to do with the kinect.

I have a Kinect and will use this new feature at least once to try it out, but I really wish that Microsoft would devote more of its time to something more practical, like adding functionality to the Kinect itself if possible, like finger tracking, better Kinect ID setup/recognition, etc. Not a real complaint, but wishful thinking.
