Fresh Forza 4 Kinect and Tyre Simulation Details Drop

Turn 10 has revealed some new details for Forza Motorsport 4 in a feature on the MSN Autos site, explaining how the developer is taking the realism further by scanning vehicles - such as the oh-so tasty Bugatti Veyron - with 3D lasers to map every minute curve and detail. There's also some insight offered into the game's tyre behaviour and Kinect-tracking capabilities.

Collaborating with tyre manufacturer, Pirelli, Turn 10 is hoping to provide the "most up-to-date simulation of how modern tyres grip or slip in a variety of racing conditions". Extra lengths are even being taken in replicating its versions of real-world tracks, with each circuit being painstakingly recreated using terabytes of data including captured videos and images, as well as tracings of the surfaces spanning the track taken with a GPS system.

This will allow for "road crowning, tiny changes in camber or angle, and other anomalies with subcentimeter accuracy," meaning that the tracks are likely to be the most accurate and authentic yet seen in a racing game. Blimey.

As for the level of support that will be offered for Kinect, Forza 4 will have "limited functionality" including a "phantom steering wheel" that you'll grasp and use to tackle corners, alongside head-tracking for peering around blind curves as you lean to edge the driver's view. This can also be used to look around a car as you pass during an overtaking manoeuvre. You'll be able to "walk around" Forza 4's cars and poke around the interior as touched upon in the E3 2010 demo too.

"I think we're just scratching the surface," Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt said of Forza 4's Kinect support. "I have the feeling that we'll all look back at these first few years of Kinect and reflect on it as a huge inflection point in interactive entertainment."

Forza Motorsport 4 is lined up for release later this year.

Oh god, I read that article as if they said that Forza 4 is going to play like Kinect Joy Ride.

blimey, they are going to some extreme lengths for perfection, its a little of a shame that all their hard work tweaking the tracks and so on will be completely overlooked when actually playing the game and flying around the circuit at 100mph.
as for the kinect stuff, i dont have kinect so theres nothing really special about it to me.
excellent work by them so far tho

I agree with #4 (although I dont have a steering wheel).

I'll try wit the kinect thing, but Im probably gonna spend most of my time wit the controller

Sounds promising

they must have paid a fortune to get pirelli to spill tyre data but I feel forza is like any other racing title and hasn't progressed as a motorsport game. I mean the set up part should be more indepth by this stage with simulations, reviewing collected data (histograms etc) and changes to centre of gravity, polar moments blah blah.

I'd rather the dials on the dashboard actually worked properly than being able to fine FINE tune 20 aspects about my suspension.

Road crowning with subcentimeter accuracy and tyre deformation are all great so long as some glaring flaws like a complete lack of active aerodynamics don't make their into Forza 4 as they did Forza 3.

This sounds awesome. Use your controller, wheel OR kinect for steering and still get to look around with your head if you have kinect. That's how I read it.

I'm curious how well Kinect will be able to handle. However, having spent £60 on a wheel and pedals, I'll generally just use them.

All this stuff about subcentimeter accuracy mapping... Great but I'd honestly rather they keep the old accuracy and add weather effects. If this game had weather it would keep it fresh for ever. It was about the only thing missing from Forza 3.

kinect is retarted, i hope they dont mess up. using a xbox steering wheel is much better than steering like a dumbass holding an invible wheel, and also, you wont look stupid

" Collaborating with tyre manufacturer, Pirelli, Turn 10 is hoping to provide the "most up-to-date simulation of how modern tyres grip or slip in a variety of racing conditions". "

Does that mean it might rain in the new Forza?

@17 You spelt retarded wrong...

You can use Kinect to steer, but how the hell will you accelerate and brake?
I like the idea of walking round the car and looking round corners, but i WILL be racing with a control pad!
