XNA Will Not Have Achievements
Written Thursday, February 21, 2008 By David Creech

Yesterday's announcement of XNA Community Games was exciting, but it wasn't exactly heavy on answers. Today Joystiq sat with a breakfast table full of Microsoft bigwigs and pummeled them until they gave up the information below:

  • Only members of XNA Creators Club will be able to upload games to the service. They'll also make up the review squad for games that will vet them for IP infringement, adult content, etc.
  • Games will not be rated by any body like the ESRB, but those groups have been asked for their opinion on Microsoft's rating system.
  • Microsoft's not talking about how the system will be monetized (or even if it will) while they're in this beta phase.
  • Games will be on the Marketplace blade, but you'll also be able to search a web page for games that you'd like to play. Creators will be able to post comments about their games as well as downloadable videos.
  • At the moment, the file size limit of games is 150 MB, but Microsoft is open to increasing that if need be.
  • Both silver and gold members of Xbox Live will be able download XNA games.
  • Microsoft isn't particularly worried about XNA cannibalizing XBLA sales. As Xbox Live VP John Schappert said, "I think at the end of the day, empowering consumers to create their own games is better overall. I think it will be a nice compliment.
  • At the moment, you won't be able to see what your friends are playing, but that's something Microsoft would like to fix.
  • There won't be any Achievements on XNA.
  • Creators will be able to choose which regions they want their work in.
  • Creators will retain the rights to their work.

Thanks to Joystiq and StingX2

Hmmm, this will be pretty interesting to see how it turns out. Xbox looks to be expanding quite a bit. Too bad there isn't any achievements, lol. :D

But there was Achievements listed on some of the game menus. I guess those are just in game achievements.

I think achievements in these games would ruin the system. Anyone with the ability to make a game with achievements could just give themselves 200 points at any given time. It would be absurd. Good move Microsoft.

Yea I don't mind the lack of achievements at all either. But I have been enjoying some of the XNA games thus far, and am looking forward to great games being developed through this format.

No achievements makes perfect sense because it's supposed to be a testing ground of sorts for XNA games. The most popular ones will in all likelihood get picked up for a full XBLA release and, of course, get the accompanying achievements then.

Well, chances are, the best of the games will be rereleased into XBLA, at which point they will have achievements. That's why some of the game menus have Achievements listed on them.

thats because they don't have achievements .. if they want to sell more add them its that simple. Same goes for Xbox Originals

Well there's some achievements on xna games. But I don't expect all of them.

I prefert achievements on the originals than xna.

In response to everybody who says that giving these games achievements would mess up the achievement system, I don't think that's true. I imagine these games have to be tested before going up, and they won't just let people throw up games with insanely easy achievements to help boost your score.

Are these gonna be sold or downloadable for free?

That Dishwasher game is pretty good - opened my eyes to this XNA business. I was expecting crappy made boring games but it doesnt seem so from what I can see

It makes a lot of sense not to include Achievements... BUT, what about offering 25-50 points? It's not that much but would encourage people to download and play user created games, which in turn gives those creators more exposure.
