THQ and World Event Productions (WEP) have announced that Voltron is set to make his way into the video game world, with a series of titles planned in a deal between the two companies. The original 1984 animated television series - Voltron: Defender of the Universe - starred the titular robot hero, with five mech lions combining to form one giant robot warrior.

The Voltron video games will be arriving at exactly the right time too, with new Voltron toy lines planned for later in 2011 and 2012 from Mattel, as well as a 2D/CGI animated Voltron Force series in the offing, which is set to launch in the US on Nicktoons later this year.

Apparently, the video games will build upon the original epic 1984 adventure, which transformed Voltron into a pop culture icon known the world over. THQ has yet to confirm platforms for the Voltron titles, but given the character's appeal, it doesn't seem too far-fetched to imagine that the games will make their way to high-end consoles.

"The video games relationship with THQ, along with our master toy relationship with Mattel, signals the exciting future ahead for Voltron," said Robert Koplar, Vice President at World Events Productions. "With its signature robot lion action and titanic-scale battles, our Voltron games and toys along with our new series are sure to have enormous appeal to fans of all ages around the world."

THQ's Voltron video games are expected to debut in autumn 2011.

  • Oh my god this is the best news. Voltron is awesome. When are they bringing back thundercats? then i can die happy
  • The game better have an achievement for forming the head.
  • Nice news, but...2012?
  • Hmmm, when the lions formed voltron the robeasts didn't have a chance. Would be interesting to see how they go about this. Thundercats would be awesome, and M.A.S.K would be the cherry on top.
  • Interesting - now all we need is a Ulysses 31 RPG.....get to it Bioware.
  • i hope they make a street sharks arcade game.
  • Awesome! Next up, He-Man!
  • Inside me a 5 year old self is throwing his fist into the air, and shouting "yipeeee"
  • I have never heard of this, 1984 was way before I was even alive. But 5 lions that turn into a robot?! Sold.
  • HOLY CRAP YES!!!
  • never heard of it, which explains things, cos i think i have one of the action figures in my attic with all my transformes. lol
  • Man oh man do I want to be excited for this... Voltron, ThunderCats, and He-Man hold such a special place in my heart... It would be so Epic if done properly but I have no faith in THQ :-(
  • This made me nostalgia so hard that I went and looked for allthe cartoons I watched as a child. Voltron was seriously awesome, please make a M.A.S.K game too, and The Centurions.
  • @4 & 13 I have been talking to all of the guys at work for years about M.A.S.K. and not a single person remembers it, loved that cartoon. OT me and my brother used to watch Voltron every time it came on, back when cartoons after school and Saturday mornings ruled our life. Hope they do this game justice. Can't wait to tell him.
  • When you form Voltron You get an automatic victory
  • OMG! This is what I have been waiting for! I loved this show when I was a kid back in 1980's! A day 1 purchase!
  • I really hope THQ does well with this! Fond memories indeed! Forming Voltron was the original "going beast-mode!" Thanks for the shout-out RW! Made my day! ;P
  • By the way, for those asking, there is a new Thundercats series coming out this year. They sort of anime'd up the character designs, but admittedly it sounds much better than some crap CGI junk. OT: I will probably buy this, even if it sucks hardcore. Loved me some Voltron back in the day. Interesting fact: Back in the day when the episodes would come over from Japan, they didn't have a translated script to work from, so the writers pretty much had to guess what was going on and come up with dialogue to fit what they thought was happening.
  • OMG do want
  • I was 7 in 1984 and totally remember the cartoon...needless to say, I shall check this out
  • @1, 4, 12: #18 is correct, ThunderCats are back, new animated show this fall, with merchandise hitting the shelves around July/August. No word on a game yet, but there is still hope...
  • Could be cool. THQ might be able to make this work.
  • "And I'll form the head!" It's been a while since I head that phrase ...
  • Just like 21 said Thundercats are BACK. Voltron should be coming a little bit after that. Thundercats on cartoon network voltron on Nickelodeon.
  • Btw all the Awesome that is Voltron is available on Netflix Instant. I watch them with the little ones all the tome on the 360.
  • Wow, more retro, Voltron was craptacular but I loved it as a kid. Wonder what they'll do with it... I still have to get my hands on Transformers War for Cybertron...
  • Even if this is pure crap which I fear it will be, I will play it. (Voltron is my most nostalgic favorite franchise - I have each First Gen Voltron, 2 25th anniversarie editions and one of em hasn't been open). I am stoked for this regardless. Still have all of em in pristine condition save the plastic bulky one and all the seasons on DVD. "From days of long ago...from uncharted regions...comes a Legend. The Legend of Voltron!"
  • More like Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
  • I wonder how much they'll stick to the OG story. Like are they going to include Sven? Or are they just immediatly adding Princess Alura to the Blue Lion? That aside, the only other thing that is a MUST is the intro and Koran must be voiced by Peter Cullen. MUST! I'm going home today and taking Voltron out of his robot form and into the individual lions and reassemble when this game drops. Haven't touched it for about 4 years.
  • Could be good. I always liked vehicle Voltron a bit more though. Both were quality shows when I was a kid.
  • @29- I'm right there with you, Peter Cullen is a huge factor for the success of this game. Also curious about how they deal with the characters. I'm thinking they can start with the original crew and work their way to some of "newer" stuff during the game.(obviously depends on the length and genre they go with) Speaking of genre, which route will they go with such a small timeframe to work in?
  • @ 31 - Well the movie plot, which along with Thundercats is still in "License/Rights" Limbo, sounds good all except for the earth factor. It's described as the 5 space explorers (Alura is already with them. No Sven) crash land on earth, 2 in LA and 3 in NY and "find" the buried Voltron. It COULD be good but I'd rather them stick to the lore. Would love to see live action Zarkon and Yurik and a bizarre Robeast. I'm really wondering how they'd integrate Voltron and the Lions. Would you team up with buddies and form him as a special attack or would it be a new gameplay style similar to...the only example I can give is think to Power Rangers when they make the Megazord - All the players are in a FPS screen basically in the one room and synthesizing attacks with Voltron. Could be interesting but I'd much rathr just control the whole bot. It says up there they're going by the 1984 first series thankfully. Guaranteed a movie would mix em up giving the lions transforming engines and wheels and stuff.
  • @ 29 - Well, with what High Moon did with WFC and totally giving us a new beginning to how the war broke out on Cybertron, I'd go with something like that. Maybe they might even focus on the actual Legend of Voltron before Keith, Hunk, Pidge, Sven and Lance came into the mix. Should still involve the Lions (no vehicles plz), Koran, Princess Alura, Robeasts and Hagar the witch. I'd love to see any screenshots at this point, concept or rough drafts.
  • @32- A lot of what your saying makes sense. I'm just worried that they'll "cop-out" like an old Gundamwing game from back in the day that was just a simple fighting game. (Like Street Fighter) On the one-hand your happy to be playing as characters you love, the other your upset that it's not something better. In my mind I can see two-parts where you start off as crew members and using the individual lions and then having the epic battles as Voltron. In any case, I guess only time will tell. ;P
  • @ 34 - Dude, i totally love that idea of first half the explorers, second half the Lions. Very ingenious. Like you said, Time will tell at this point. I do have hope as I'm huge on a lot of things monster based. Godzilla is my ultimate favorite and in the game world - MASSIVE disappointment. I tried to enjoy the Melees and Brawls but just didnt fit. Looked great, played horrible. I do hope he gets one more shot. He's had a worse game career than Batman. Batman succeeded on the NES and recently. I'll tell you what we DO need from back in the day and could very much work - Silver Hawks, Bionic Six or The Centurions. And while it probably would never venture into gaming, I want a revival of Dinosaucers. Damn this announcement got me disgustingly nostalgic. I'm going to go watch the Funimation Ghostbusters eps now lol. Let's Go Ghostbusters!
  • @35- LMAO!!! It's a revival of the cartoons from the eighties and early nineties! It's cause for a celebration! I'm gonna go on a limb and say either RW or Webb has a Danger Mouse shirt tucked away somewhere! But don't tell them I said that! ;P
  • I go through these nostalgia binges like once a year. I tried to watch the old Captain N cartoon and while I did, it was painful to watch lol. HAHA! Your secret's safe with me, sir. I've still got my Ghostbusters 2 coveralls from when I was a kid packed in my closet. Think I'm gonna hang em on the wall this weekend.
  • @1 I agree with you 100% Voltron was epic, and the Thunder Cats too. I always liked Mumra, kept hoping he'd win when I was little. @7 He-Man was good when I was younger, if they make it a little or even a lot less homoerotic it would be great.
  • wow...I just had a flash back....I loved Voltron.
