Dark Souls Media Features Giant Rats and Other Nasties

We're already scared, looking at these first screenshots and the announcement trailer for Dark Souls. And if you happened to play Demon's Souls on PS3, you'll know exactly why we're scared. Featuring more demons, monsters and other hideous beasts, Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, and it's set to be even harder than its forebear. Eek!

Trawling through more trap-laden dungeons, dealing with creatures like giant rats, skeletons, dragons and other monstrous enemies, in Dark Souls you're the hero, equipped with little more than a sword and a shield, and the ghostly apparitions of previous adventurers' mistakes being played out before you as a warning to help guide you. If Dark Souls is anything like the previous game, you'll also find messages that warn of dangers ahead, unless a bloody-minded player fancies leading you astray with the wrong information.

Dark Souls is set to test your mettle when it releases sometime in 2011. Check out the first 15 screens in the gallery and watch the darkly foreboding announcement trailer. "In time, Fire will fade, and only Dark will remain." Brrr... Spooky.

  • I had a rat like that in my first student house. It paid the rent on time though, so it was cool. Harder than Demon's Souls? *mops brow*
  • Harder than Demon Souls? Can't wait to go for those achievements..................
  • My caption for that first one: "BEN! Mom and I had wondered where you got off to, you sneaky bastard." And Demon Souls was the spiritual successor to King's Field, but guess I only remember that one. Hopefully with this one they do a better job with the coop/pvp features. Demon Souls did a good job and I'm glad this one is getting a bigger name publisher.
  • Amazing! Cant wait! :)
  • isn't this ps3 exclusive?
  • Definitely gonna keep my eyes on this title. Could be amazing.
  • @5 Demon Douls was PS3 exclusive, but luckily for us, this isn't. =]
  • hopefully this will come out in the UK, I imported Demon Souls and thought it was great, this would have me playing for hours and hours
  • http://www.computerandvideogames.com/286974/news/dark-souls-confirmed-for-europe-us-in-2011/?attr=CVG-General-RSS good news folks
  • Oh yeah!! I will be getting this. Looks amazing, but harder than Demon Souls, wow. Thats going to hurt.
  • @7 brilliant news looking forward to much pad throwing rage!
  • 2011 - Year of the RPG. Mass Effect 3 Deus Ex: Human Revolution Dragon Age 2 Elder Scrolls V Dark Souls Let's see if they can do a clean sweep for GOTY awards :D
  • Hopefully they can package in Demon Souls for us!
  • @13 Or bundle it as an interactive comic ;)
  • You seriously have problem if you enjoy these games. I played Demon's Souls until the third "level" and quit. I can have fun playing a game that punishes all your progress.
  • @15 It punishes you for poor playing, like the classic games of old. The trick is to play well. Unfortunately, rather than admit that maybe you aren't very good at gaming, you decided to come onto a forum that is notorious for it's treatment of trolls. Nice work.
  • If I want to get dicked, I'll keep working on my Super Meat Boy 100% achievement... If I want to get dicked in high def, I'll end up playing the crap out of this too. It just bums me out, because I KNOW this won't do well. :( As much as I'd like to see it GOTY, it won't. Not saying I won't like it, but it's just the type of game it is.
  • Day One for me. Games like this got me into gaming way back on the PS1. I'll not turn down any Sword based RPG/Adventure game. Good job I saw Oblivion in Asda going cheap otherwise I'd nether had played it. So glad I did!
  • Day one for me, but i'll be getting it on PS3. Seeing as I already have Demon's Souls I'd rather continue the collection on the same console :P
  • Another Day One for me as well. This is going to destroy me, I know it, and I can't wait!
  • I'm glad we are getting something like this. A game that will challenge us and probably break a few pads in the process. Games seem to be getting a bit easy now a days
  • Holy shit, what have they been dumping in the sewers!? Never played the first one since I don't have a PS3 (or the money/desire to obtain one) but this looks pretty good, love the evil lord looking baddie at the end of the vid.
  • @ #14 lol.. nah I'll take the actual game! @ #21 need a challenge? travel back to original xbox land and play Ninja Gaiden. Guarantee you'll break a controller
