Activision Announce Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

Activision Announce Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
Written Friday, February 15, 2008 by Dan Webb

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb 15, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Fire up the fret board, crank the amp to 11 and get ready to rock this way with Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq:ATVI) Guitar Hero(R): Aerosmith(R), the first game built around the legendary music of America's Greatest Rock 'N Roll Band: Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer. Slated for release this June, this latest installment from the franchise with the #1 best-selling video game in 2007, puts players in the shoes of Perry (guitar), Whitford (guitar) and Hamilton (bass), as they rock out alongside frontman Tyler and drummer Kramer. Gamers will experience Aerosmith's GRAMMY(R) winning career, from their first gig to becoming rock royalty, in a way that no other entertainment vehicle offers.

To celebrate this historic, ground-breaking collaboration, Guitar Hero(R) III: Legends of Rock fans will have the opportunity to download and jam to Aerosmith's "Dream On." The song will be available for free from February 16-18 on Xbox LIVE(R) Marketplace for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION(R)Store for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system. For more information, please visit www.guitarhero.com.

"Having a game built around Aerosmith has been a huge honor and really a great experience for us," says Joe Perry. "We've put a lot of ideas into the game so that fans can have fun interacting with our music, getting inside our body of work and learning about the band's history."

Steven Tyler says, "Any band that can go from 'Don't Want to Miss A Thing' (Aerosmith's #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking 'Sweet Emotion' to the cheekiness of 'Love in an Elevator,' to the classic ballad 'Dream On' shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies."

Perry adds, "On a larger scale, it's cool for us to be pioneers helping to rebuild the music industry through a format like video games. It's great for rock since the record companies are struggling to make sense of how things are changing. Fans want to get and experience music in new formats--and there are going to be some of them who will play the game, then pick up the guitar for real and start bands. It's what's happening now, and it's only going to build more momentum in the future. It's a massive change for the music business."

"We are extremely excited that Aerosmith chose to team up with Guitar Hero, bringing one of the world's all-time best-selling artists together with one of the biggest video game brands, to deliver a new and unique interactive way for our customers to connect with artists and their music," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing for Activision/RedOctane. "This partnership will give Aerosmith, a band that has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, a powerful and innovative platform to reach their fans and new audiences."

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith brings these quintessential rock legends to the interactive realm to create the ultimate gaming experience. As fans progress through their careers in the game, they can rock out to scores of Aerosmith's greatest hits, as well as songs from celebrated artists that the band has either performed with or has been inspired by in some way. Venues from historical moments during the band's illustrious career offer the experience of "sweet emotion" and further capture the essence of the band's rise to fame.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system. The Wii(TM) version is being developed by Vicarious Visions. The PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system version is being developed by Budcat. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB.

Editor's Note: Well, I'm literally speechless, I really had to check the calendar to see whether it was April the 1st. Guitar Hero: Aerosmith? Great for the Aerosmith junkies, a needless expense for the rest of us. Well, maybe that's just me.

Aerosmith is tight, but this should have been an expansion pack not a $60 affair.

Bad move Activision. If they wanted to do this, than they should have gotten more groups and made blocks on the game. So a 5 song block of Aerosmith and a 5 song block of Metallica and so on. Having a game ike this focused on just one band (no matter how great they are) is just plain a bad idea.

I like the idea, but I would not have chosen Aerosmith. I don't think anyone likes Aerosmith anymore ever since they went pop with 'Don't want to miss a thing'

Aerosmith is an awesome band...However, I don't think there is any single band that has enough "great" tracks to warrant an exclusive GH game. Maybe the Beatles...lol.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 02:45:13 PM

I'll have to see what songs are in it before I pass judgement, but I happen to like most songs by Aerosmith, although this move would have fit Rock Band a lot better. Hopefully they'll do a Rush, Metallica, Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin version. Hopefully...

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 02:49:44 PM

it's a cool idea and all, but it will only hit a target audience versus the last few games that seem to hit home with many audiences. this one here is for one band's fans, which aerosmith does have a lot of fans, but enough to justify a 60 dollar game?

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 03:48:02 PM

Why Aerosmith? How sad. I agree with the Metallica post above. Actually, any band could be better than Aerosmith. I want a whole GH game based on the Dillinger Escape Plan or Lamb of God or Slayer or Avenged Sevenfold or someting like that. Not Aerosmith. I don't plan on purchasing this, but it's hard for me to turn down any form of Guitar Hero, so maybe. But I won't like it.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 03:48:29 PM

This is gonna be another crappy "Rock the 80's" game, just another cheap and quick way for the GH guys to make a quick buck. It should be released as an expansion pack to GH:III and should only be like 20-30 bucks MAX. At least they included a free song.

Mega lame. I will most certainly not be purchasing this, i always thought the aerosmith songs on gh2 and rock band were some of the weakest songs in the games, nought wrong with em like, just boring to play......a whole game of this? no thanks. Just gives me more a reason to get more songs for rock band.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:10:17 PM

Ok, I don't hate Aerosmith, but I don't really see spending $60 for an EXPANSION for Guitar Hero (learned my lesson from Rock the 80's). I will rent this game but I don't plan on buying it(maybe when it drops down to $29.99). The only good thing about it being a expansion disc is that it will have the full 1000 achievements. But since it is Activision, only about 2/3 of the achievements will be attainable for most people

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:14:14 PM

I love Aerosmith... but seriously... A full game disc to buy, which is primarily an expansion (GH 80's anyone?), that you can't download?
Seeing as how GH has been really lax with the downloads (free song is nice) this is kinda disappointing.
Plus Aerosmith has more Rock Band potential. Yeah, the guitarists are fun to play as but I'd love to wait it out like Steve Tyler.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:18:05 PM

welp.. looks like i'll definately be passing on this. if they did a Guitar Hero based on jimi hendrix, red hot chili peppers, or radiohead, I might consider, and even then, i'd be iffy. entire guitar hero game based on one band? eh

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:18:37 PM

Guys, this isn't THAT bad... I mean, it may not be the best band choice, but it is a Guitar Hero game. And this is just that "little project" they were talking about for the spring. At least they said they're working on another regular Guitar Hero for later in the year. I may get it just because I love Guitar Hero, but I still need to think.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:19:52 PM

Over the past few days I've noticed way too much whining when it comes to commenting on news. Jeez.

At any rate, for all those hoping for GH: (insert bands name here) , THIS is kind of like GH developers testing the waters. If this item sells well enough, who knows...maybe we'll get some other classic rock, or even something newer. I particularly am Hoping for a Rush game, Killswitch engage. However understand it's based on the artist too, They have to OK it. Sadly no Led Zeppelin for that reason /cry

I'm not a huge Aerosmith fan, but that's no reason to profess how much they suck...their stardom and record sales purely show they aren't a terrible band. Not everything is for everyone, if you don't want to buy it, no one is making you.

Heres hoping GH pursues this for other bands a

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:21:57 PM

You guys realize (or actually most of you probably DON'T, based on all the posts thus far) that the game isn't going to be ALL Aerosmith songs, right? They're a big part of the game, and there will be a good amount of songs by them, but the entire damn game isn't gonna be only them.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:23:57 PM

They should get EA to help just to complete the grand slam of crappiness. Some people will like it but unless it is an easy 1000, which it won't be given the last two, it is not going to be as popular. The expansion idea would suit this, or a bargain bin game minus the controller perhaps.

And it might just be a 'little project' but it will still taint the series like COD3 did to COD in general.

But if they decide to use a good band instead then I await the release of Guitar Hero: Toto (or Metallica).

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:35:53 PM

Wow... This will be the fourth Guitar Hero in little over a year (if you count II, III, and Rock the 80's). It's confirmed... Activision is the new EA. Not the mention the fact that Aerosmith hasn't been cool since I was in preschool. I agree with the other's who've stated that this would have been much more fitting to Rock Band's DLC model.

Friday, February 15, 2008 @ 05:39:37 PM

I'll be getting it. Aerosmith doesn't suck, you can look at the record sales, sold out concerts, etc. etc. Those of you wishing for GH: (insert some screamo/death metal/bullshit band here) won't happen. Because those bands aren't big. Aerosmith (and older bands) will probally be seen more because people of all ages have heard them. Go to your local walmart and see how many people say yes they heard of Killswitch, Slayer, Tool compared to how many say yes to Aerosmith, Metallica, Beatles. They aren't going to make a game that won't profit, and if you were in there shoes you would do the same thing. Otherwise you would go out of business.

Are we serious? A guitar hero based around a single band? Thats not something I'd pay $60 for. Aerosmith is OK, but I wouldn't want to buy a $60 game based on their music. If it were a different band, maybe. But this sounds just...dumb. I'll only get it if like someone gets it for me as a present, or like, yeah. I doubt I'll get it. I'll wait until it comes out, look and see if its any good at all, which I doubt, and if it is I might get it. But its awesome that we get a song for GH-III out of it.

That has to be the dumbest thing I heard all day just one band? I have all given up on the guitar Hero series and this happens. I hate Aerosmith so I will def pass. Just bring Rock band out over here already

shit I will pay 60 bucks for Aerosmith only. Those hating on them just have no taste in good varied music that they have produced from since the 70's. Unlike most bands today you can pick up a majority of Aerosmith's albums and every track is very listenable and could be a single.

I am not even remotely interested in this, but I can see where Aerosmith fans would enjoy it. I don't mind playing Aerosmith in a game, but I don't want to play all Aerosmith. I will download the free song though, maybe it will make me want to work on more GH3 achieves.

This may not be the best idea in the world, but at least they picked a band with guitarists who actually have talent instead of some crappy overrated hot topic fad band. aerosmith rocks.

wish it was for rock band but this is still a definate buy for me. Aerosmith is one of my favorite bands and just thinking about playign I don't wanna miss a thing and Sweet Emotion makes me want it now.

Will it have achievements?

In all seriousness, buying this will open the floodgates of releasing meaningless expansions for the next year and a half. Obviously they would rather rape the community instead of giving a logical dlc for less. This move reeks of The Sims strategy. Quit quit for sure!

I agree with lakerfan420. i like aerosmith, but it should be like an expansion pack like the shivering isles. where it is only like $20 and you can download it or buy it in the stores.

If it has a 1000 points and they all arnt impossible I will consider it. Of course if they have the theme from Armageddon I will buy hands down, no questions asked. Dont judge me

Saturday, February 16, 2008 @ 03:04:52 AM

Will be a rental for me if they rent this one out, only for points. I hate, hate, HATE Aerosmith. The only song I like is "Dream On" and oh yeah... "Jamie Got A Gun"

IMO this would work better on Rock Band and be a better add on for that game.

If this doesn't turn up as a rental, I'll definently wait til it hits the $9.99 shelf and then consider it.

I've got to agree bringing a game with just one artist is not a great idea for the main guitar hero fan. Personally it would be a rental, or a borrow just cause some of my friends will buy anything. It would have been better if they released individual songs at a time through rock band guitar hero 3. But not like this.

Bottom line it's too expensive for a one artist playlist. I don't see the replay value in it.

It's called riding the wave. GH is hot right now, so why wouldn't a has-been band cash in on it? It should just be DLC - I hope it tanks.
Agreed it would be a better Rock Band pak - but GH is going to over-do it, and turn people off...
heheh no, we won't supply good DLC for you, just buy our next disc - Guitar Hero : Skinny Tie Bands edition for $60,
Play Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, Prince & Madness!
Madness would be cool though....

Saturday, February 16, 2008 @ 06:59:16 PM

Aww, that's too bad they aren't continuing the other 3. Aerosmith is good, but it doesn't justify a purchase for one band. Rock Band can do that, all on DLC.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm not a huge fan of rock band so anything GH is good for me. Besides it's not like it's the only one coming out this year. If that were the case then i would say bad move but since there actual GH 4 is still coming out it's all good.

I'll probably get it because it'll have an awesome guitar with it. Other then that, oh well. It's a shame to be honest. After Rock Band was released, you would think they would have pulled out the notebook and wrote down some notes. For example, customizable characters? Consistent downloadable tracks? Awesome story mode?

My favorite comments going through the entirety of this "conversation" all contain the phrase "If they'd picked a band with a bigger song library..." The only band I've seen to date with a bigger song library would be the Rolling Stones (or Phish, if you can count endless stoner jams as songs). I haven't counted recently, but there are over 180 songs available in their catalog. Just sayin'...

lol part of the appeal behind Guitar Hero is VARIETY. Obviously its about the illusion of being a badass guitar player but thats beside the point. When you take the variety of songs and artists out of the mix you get stuck with something that people will only want to play once but never buy. Activision you fail.

Sunday, February 17, 2008 @ 03:16:59 PM

your all missing the point...

we all know as gh fans, that there dlc stinks, and iam sorry, but i have had every single format of the game also, but you know what...its a question if i like 5% of the songs in the games, at first, i learn to like the muaic. i like it because of the game itself.

and we all jump at the news of any content for gh series, as its lacking way behind now, against rockband.

and on the point of calling aerosmith crap, it doesn't matter one jott who it is, just stop and think for one minute, how on earth could they ever satisfy everyone, its an impossible task and one that can never be solved.

like me it will be taken as extra content for one of the most enjoyable games on the system, price and how its delivered will matter greatly for me,
oh and what y

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
