Tons of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Info Pours onto the Internet

Following Bethesda’s unveiling of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at last month’s VGAs, Game Informer have the scoop on the game in their February edition of the magazine, which is making its way out to subscribers now.

The article itself is chock full of screenshots and information on the title, which is set to dominate your life this coming November. The magazine covers a few of the upgraded aspects in its 14 page piece, a good chunk of which we’ve plucked out of the cracks to get you up to speed, ranging from how they’ve tweaked the combat to how you’ll have the chance to explore 5 new cities. Yes, I said 5.

Get ready, this is what I call information overload...

Story

  • Skyrim will take place 200 years after Oblivion and isn’t a direct sequel in the traditional sense of things – from a story perspective.
  • You take the role of one of the supposed last remaining Dragonborn, a true dragon hunter, and will no doubt be tasked to stop the huge dragon God, Alduin, also known as the World Eater.
  • Esbern, your in-game mentor of sorts, is one of the last surviving Blades and will be voiced by Max Von Sydow (Minority Report, etc)
  • Your hero will be tasked with walking 7,000 steps to the high retreat of High Hrothgar to get dragon slaying training from a group of mysterious old men that reside there called the Greybeards.

Game World

  • There are said to be “six or seven really different environment looks” in Skyrim, says Bethesda's Todd Howard.
  • There are 5 massive cities to explore. Yes, you can fast travel to previously explored places.
  • There are 10 races in Skyrim.
  • There are a variety of tasks to do in Skyrim as well, including crafting new weapons at the forge, creating poisons and potions through alchemy and you can enchant items with magical powers.
  • You can also get involved in mundane tasks if you wish, like farming, woodcutting, mining and even cooking.
  • Dropping weapons in the street can end in different outcomes; for instance, it could remain there forgotten, it could be picked up by a small boy and returned to you, or two men could fight over its ownership.
  • The game world is said to be much more alive and detailed than in Oblivion, and boast incredible draw distances. Everything is said to be traversable.
  • The game world is populated with a variety of animals from saber-tooth cats to woolly mammoths.
  • Lesser dragons roam the game world, meaning they will play a far more significant part this time around. They are a big part of Skyrim and won’t be held back until the end.

Missions

  • Thanks to something Bethesda are calling the Radiant story system, the game’s lesser missions will react to who you are and where you are, and present you with quests that are “flavoured dynamically.”
  • That’ll take into account where you’ve been, who you’ve killed, what skills you’ve upgraded, who are your friends and who are your enemies. For instance, a magic user may give a fellow magic user a quest, but not someone who levelled up their weapon skill.
  • If you kill a shopkeeper that was going to give you a quest, his sister will inherit the store and may give you the quest out of anger or frustration instead.
  • The ability to duel in the streets is mentioned.
  • Through missions, the game will encourage players to go places they’ve never visited. For instance, a woman might ask you to save her kidnapped offspring and the game will send you to a dungeon you’ve never been before. It’ll then set enemies that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses.

NPCs

  • Faces have been dramatically overhauled, giving them more emotion and making them as realistic as they ever have been in a Bethesda game.
  • Conversations are revamped and no longer zoom in on a rigid character. Instead, characters will often get on with what they are doing with the occasional glances at the player character, for instance.
  • Characters can overhear details from other people’s conversations that they can do with as they see fit, from hearing about missing items or unusual situations. All of which are stored in a log.

Combat

  • Skyrim welcomes the two hands/two options approach, enabling players to mix and match what each hand holds, whether it’s a spell/weapon combo, a weapon/weapon combo, a spell/spell combo or a weapon/shield combo. Whatever you want is possible.
  • You can setup loadouts and change them in combat with only a momentary pause.
  • There are finishing moves now that are weapon and opponent specific.
  • Bows take longer to draw back this time, but are much more powerful.
  • There are only 5 schools of magic in Skyrim – there was 6 in Oblivion – with Mysticism being cut. Howard insisted that with them jiggling stuff around, it became redundant.
  • Bethesda has slowed down how fast you move backwards too, so you can’t just backpedal in combat. Apparently being able to move as fast backwards as you can forwards made your character look ridiculous in third-person view.
  • Enemies don’t necessarily charge at the player when they see him this time and some will have unique patterns and tendencies.
  • Players can learn unique abilities called “dragon shouts” by absorbing the souls of dragons – one of the benefits of the dragonborn - of which there are over 20 in the game and each is formed from three words of power. They can push enemies away, slow down time, transport you and even summon a dragon, amongst other things.

Levelling Up

  • There is no class system per se in Skyrim and how a player plays depends on what skills the character gains. Use a one-handed weapon, watch that skill increase, etc. You get experience for everything.
  • Skill increases contribute to your overall level growth. Each level gives you a boost in health and a chance to boost health, magika or stamina.
  • There are 18 separate skills in Skyrim, including such things like Illusion, Destruction, Restoration, Enchanting, etc.
  • It seems like there are 50 main levels, with Howard mentioning levelling up to 50 is roughly the same time as it would be to level an Oblivion or Fallout character to 25.
  • You can level up past 50, but it’s a dramatically slower increase than before once you get past that threshold.
  • Todd Howard confirms that Skyrim will use the perk system that they used in Fallout 3, noting that there was an automated perk system in place in Oblivion, but in Skyrim, the user has control over it. There are dozens of perks to choose from, that may increase dagger damage during stealth attacks and may mean your mace attack may ignore your foe’s armour skills.
  • On the official forums, Bethesda responded to questions about the game’s scaling system that many didn’t like in the original. “All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's,” said Bethesda’s Senior Community Manager on the forums.

General

  • You can play Skyrim HUD free.
  • The third person perspective is said to be improved.
  • Characters can now sprint, using up stamina from their stamina supply.

If you want to get the proper inside look and check out the new screens – before they undoubtedly make it online – you’ll have to pick up February’s edition of Game Informer.

  • So excited. Loved Oblivion, and pretty much every game Bethesda has made...
  • Can't wait
  • Amazing !!!!
  • I CANT FRIGGING WAIT FOR THIS MAN ITS GOING TO BE AMAZING
  • This game is going to be AWESOME!!
  • Never got into oblivion !! But really loved fallout, I think I'll give this one a go!
  • [Insert OMG cat :O] This sounds ridiculously awesome...
  • huurraaay!
  • 11/11/11
  • OMG YES
  • ignore my #14 comment, it all didnt post..
  • Sounds good. Didn't find a single thing in this article that I didn't like, so hopefully it will be a big improvement (to an already amazing game).
  • Little bit of wee just came out there! Can you buy this magazine from stores or is it subscriptions only? :3
  • @#18 - Stores yes, but subscribers will get it a little earlier I assume.
  • :)))))))
  • Here's the first screenshots of Skyrim from the Game Informer issue: http://gamegasm.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/first-screens-and-info-of-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-released/
  • Oh, and it's in English as well ;-) http://gamegasm.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/first-screens-and-info-of-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-released/
  • @18 GameInformer is purchasable in stores. OT, this looks amazing.
  • Cannot wait for this game! Even Oblivion still feels epic after all this time.
  • ...Think i might need to get Oblivion and play it before this
  • Cant wait, games going to be the best yet !
  • sounds good hope they fixed loading times and gliches
  • This. Sounds. Amazing. Sounds like they've changed everything I didn't like about Oblivion and then added more great stuff. "You can also get involved in mundane tasks if you wish, like farming, woodcutting, mining and even cooking." I immediately thought of Minecraft.
  • If you use a bow to attack can you switch to a sword when the enemy gets close or are you stuck firing and missing or running?
  • Never played an Elder Scrolls game but I am definitely getting this!
  • Now where did I put my time machine?
  • I just hope they take their time and dont ship a broken game like a lot of developers do. (MW 2, Fallout: New Vegas, ETC....)
  • Bethesda doing it again... never fail to amaze
  • Hopefully they put even more attention to detail in Fallout 4
  • Nice to see that Galactus is going to be the main villian in this game!
  • Happily surprised to see Max von Sydow do the voice for the teacher. He is indeed one of the most talented Swedish actors and should be able to pull this off amazingly! :)
  • DRAGON SHOUTS WILL BE AWESOME! CANT WAIT!
  • Cant wait for this game to come out!!!
  • THIS IS GOING TO BE AN AMAZING GAMMMME !!!!
  • NO! this game deserves to die, then be rapidly teabagged ;)
  • Article with screens can be found in the link below. Link: http://gamegasm.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/first-screens-and-info-of-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-released/ Enjoy!
  • this will be awsome, just under a year to wait now.
  • This sounds excellent. I never played the fourth game. I dislike the idea of a first person sword play game. From the videos i saw it just never looked right to my eyes. So i am glad there is a third person view option here.
  • Holy Shit!! Until the end of the year, If I find myself pissed off at anything...I will think.."Well Oblivion V is being made!"
  • Cant wait for this
  • Sounds amazing!
  • This sounds like F3 and Oblivion had baby. That baby was born with Stallone's roided out muscles and the brain of Einstein!!! Mad props for changing the leveling system, it was a bit goofy in Oblivion. I am interested to see the new and improved Bethesda Engine for myself though. I love Bethesda's games, but let's be real. Everything looks amazing from a distance but up close it's kinda iffy looking.
  • I am a member of UESP.net (the elder scrolls fan wiki) and we are super pumped for TES5 MIDNIGHT RELEASE
  • @#29 - I'm fairly sure you could in Oblivion. It'll just mean that you spread your skills I assume - killing with a one-handed sword = one-handed weapon XP and not dexterity (I think it would be dexterity?) XP.
  • The most exciting bit is the bit about the NPC's, thank friggin god! Though technically every single bullet point sounded awesome.
  • @29 See the 2nd bullet point of the "Combat" paragraph. You can switch weapons whenever you want, the only difference I can see now is that you'll pause to switch loadouts instead of hitting a hotkey (D-pad) @49 Bow attacks would increase the skill named "Bow", or "Archery", whereas dexterity is an attribute that you can put points into to determine a number of things (similar to what agility is to sneak in Fallout).
  • I'm definitely picking this up on the first day, sounds amazing!
  • YES YES YES I NEED THIS GAME I really want this game.
  • ive been waiting a very long time for this. its gonna be awesome!
  • I want to know about character customization in the ways of their looks. THAT is what is important to me. This other stuff listed? I do indeed enjoy this information, but I want to be able to make my character look unique and with an actual beard this time. If you remember last time, we had an odd 5 o'clock shadow...
  • Actually sounds great so far, might pick this up.
  • I'm definitely impressed, and even more eager to play this now
  • This makes me VERY excited for what they can do with Fallout 4. Especially the new engine... count me interested!
  • I am horny.
  • @#51 - Appreciate the correction. As you can tell, it's been a while since I played it =P
  • Sounds impressive. I'm shifting towards Dragon Age 2 on this front, had a hard time getting into Oblivion(the FPS RPG style doesn't sit well with me).
  • I'm very happy that they're taking the fallout 3 route for the level scaling. Great informations.
  • By the nine divines! I came!
  • *sniff* They like us. They really do.
  • CAPITAL!
  • I may have just orgasmed over my keyboard. One of the two games im looking forward to this year (the other beig Mortal Kombat 9). Oh my god the pleasure is just Oh My God.
  • Fap fap... FAP!!!!!!!
  • My nipples are so erect from reading all of this info...
  • Sounds great but way too much like the Eragon books..... anyone else agree?
  • What gets me more excited is that the next Fallout game will have some of this upgrades too! :)
  • This is what I hate about GameInformer; it takes forever to get to my house. I haven't even gotten this issue yet! Why am I paying for a subscription? lol
  • Awesome, I like most of the changes to Skyrim. TES:V has moved up on my must have titles list from 2 to 1!
  • i for one set oblivion to be the basis for all opinions about RPG's next to FFVII when i played dragon age two worlds or any other RPG that came out after my immediate reaction was to compare a feuture to oblivion. after this game comes out i dont think any other gaming studio will be ever to come close to such a game as far as setting the bar. i cant wait for this and will gladly pay 80 bucks for it. thank you bethesda for making dreams come true. ive always said they need to make another elder scrolls after my last journeys through the shivering isles and at last someone heard my pleas
  • To be honest I never got into Oblivion; it just never interested even though I really did try (my friends all loved this game and I felt I need to try it). With this new info on Skyrim I am actually very interested and can't wait to get my hands on it to test it's metal. Hopefully I'll be able to get into this one as looks like it has some major promise.
  • I hope they use the same engine later for a new fallout game.
  • "Conversations are revamped and no longer zoom in on a rigid character. Instead, characters will often get on with what they are doing with the occasional glances at the player character, for instance." As much as i loved playing all of Fallout and Oblivion this was always the one thing that annoyed me most. I always felt like it took you out of the action of the game. Now with this fix among the others this will be game of the year!
  • I am still looking forward to Two Worlds 2 more. Still, this sounds great. inb4 minus 50 :-P.
  • :) 11-11-11
  • @77 Don't worry, I'm also looking a little forward to Two Worlds 2. But on topic, I've ALWAYS loved the Elder Scrolls games. I've been playing them since TES3:Morrowind came out on release day and they are SO AMAZING. Honestly, I still play Oblivion to this day and I'm definitely looking for to TES5: Skyrim! Even when Dragon Age, Mass Effect and other RPG's came out, I always went back to Oblivion because it really is one of the best RPG's of all time and you can't argue that, no matter what.
  • But the big question is: Will you be able to give your horse armor?
  • I've seen the screens and they are amazing! :D
  • omfg i cant wait for this game im gunna book time off work and surround myself with food on the couch and not move for a week ha haaa
  • bhgkjfajsdhsjkgdlhfasdjbhf this is AWESSOME
  • Only complaint I have is the name of the game, Skyrim.. doesn't sound right for some reason to me.
  • Cant wait to play it.
  • @84 Im with you. Oblivion has a nice sound to it, its catchy. Skyrim just sounds wierd. But with that said i dont care what they call it, it sounds brilliant.
  • CO-OP is needed for this game.
  • So this means then another 20-30 hour game is coming out under, but now under the Oblivion franchise. Expected to be buggy and mostly will get useless DLC. Gaming is just not what it used to be anymore. I have no faith in RPGs anymore.
  • #88 "the Oblivion franchise"? Please move on kid, you don't know what you are talking about. This is the most dumb post I've read this year.
  • I so can't wait for this, it's interesting to see the lessons they've learnt from fallout appearing in the elder scrolls series. With Deus Ex getting pushed into 2012, this years all about skyrim for me!!
  • #89 - Dumb like not understanding. I meant Elder Scrolls. It will happen. Like it's happening to all games. Shooters now 4 hours long, RPGs that should be 100 hours interesting are 20 hours fun 10 hours boring crap. It's how the industry can produce more each year. Every product which qualifies as a high budget one gets hype after the hype is over and the game is released you get incredible visuals, but no real content. It's getting worse every year. Just look at the games of today and the games of 5 years ago you'll see the difference. And as for making comments your was more meaningless than most, but thank you for contributing.
  • The characters in the screenshots look ridiculously realistic, I've never seen any game have Muscle and detail as in-depth as that before, everything about this game looks breathtaking, I honestly want to go into a coma and come out in 11 Months, so it's two days from release, so I can have time to prepare.
  • @91 - Yeah, you're right, I guess because they've been working on this for around 6 years, it can't be longer than 10 hours can it?
  • People worked on lot of games for years which in my eyes failed to deliver the content that was expected. I have every right to be sceptical. I hope I'm wrong I really do. Alan Wake is one of those products, I expected more gameplay time, it was a brilliant game when it comes to story and technical development, but lacked the actual content as well as a lot of games in this generation. Fallout : New Vegas is another one of these. A sequel to a brilliant game I couldn't stop playing, but after 15 hours of New Vegas it was boring and the same as 3, but with less depth. I'd love to say that games have content above all in this generation, but that's not true. The Playstation 2 era still rules when it comes to content. This generation is about great visuals and generic linear gameplay. Oblivion was a good game I love, I just hope they can recreate it when it comes to gameplay.
  • Can't wait :D
  • Words cannot express how much I am looking forward to this game, It's already my game of 2011!
  • I've spent over 300 hours in Oblivion, I can't wait to do the same in Skyrim. :)
  • about time
  • I've really enjoyed the ES series and looking at the improvements over Oblivion call me impressed. I loved ES4 so if they can match that with those added improvements and follow through with them, I believe they will, Skyrim is set to be one amazing game. Has anyone seen any better scans or what not of the GameInformer 14 page spread? The ones form that link aren't exactly the best quality..
  • Games gonna be epic.
  • I only hope it will be bigger than Oblivion. If its at least a little bigger in content its gonna be epic. I don't expect another Morrowind of course, but I expect a huge game I give 500+ hours into (without the DLC that for sure will follow). If the DLC will be at least as epic as The shivering isles, it may even become my(unlikely tought) new fav game of all time, throwind Morrowind to the second place.
  • gorgeous! them screens look tasty, i just hope the 360 can handle em better then the previous games. oblivion looked nice (at least the nature) but there were way to many loading times and stutter. just hoping this one is a fine port to the console :)
  • @99- Try this site. http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/286233-skyrim-gi-scans/
  • Now I just gotta polish up Oblivion and hope this doesn't become a game heavy in features, but limited in variety (only a few things are useful, the rest mundane.)
  • new elder scrolls new duke and new ssx this cud def b the best year ever lol
  • Looking at the assumed released date for this game, I think it's safe to say this game will probably come out extremely close to the new Call of Duty. Well, screw of Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls is what I'm going to be playing!
  • i want so bad. i dont know why i got excited when i read about mundane tasks. i guess chopping wood in fable 2 was fun.
  • Cheers for the bigger scans, hopefully they'll send out some proper release screenshots! Visually the new engine is looking very good, nice step up from the older one!
  • Cant wait
  • BY AZURA, BY AZURA, BY AZURA!!!!
  • GAME OF THE YEAR ,simple as that.
  • Sweet.
  • Cannot wait for this game!
  • Can't wait!
  • Sounds like the are making just about every imaginable good change to improve upon a game that was already phenomenal. This game might actually be the best thing ever. I just hope the Dark Brotherhood missions make a return, they were the absolute best missions. The one in the house where you have to eliminate everyone was great.
  • I can see my future already. I'll be splitting my "free time" (aka time not at work, not doing chores around the house, and/or quality time with the wife) playing this and the almost guarenteed yearly release of Call of Duty.
  • My friend has my Oblivion, might just get this before them as a form of revenge! Sounds amazing.
  • This might just keep me from buying COD. Cant wait, so many hours put into the last elder scrolls, gonna have to start playing again
  • @115 Omg, The Dark Brotherhood quests were like the best side quests ever in a game, they kicked ass! @117 You should man, you really should.
  • Am I the only one who is actually overall dissapointed and less hyped for Skyrim because of this new info? I was really hoping for a game that was an improvement on the the games that ate up entire summers of my childhood like Oblivion and Morrowind. While Fallout is fun and all I really would of preffered Elderscrolls to stay Elderscrolls. On a more positive note: Losing the ability to just drop things in the world and leave them there feels a little bit like a loss because I mean come on we've all done it but this will now add a little more immersion into the game for me. Make it seem slightly more real. If we factor out the how the whole Fallout concept ruined my day then this game is impressive already. Now heres the big hope though. Skyrim better look better then the how Oblivion does with the mods I have. I don't think I could play another Elderscrolls game without having snakes slithering through bushes and dragon flies and other creatures making me feel more imersed in the environment. I love the work that modders do. Except for whoever did the mod I have for making it more realistic when you loot corpses (as in if you steal everything they're totally naked) who ever has the time to make sure Orc women have bush needs to go find something else to do.
  • can't wait till I get my Feb Game Informer! This is my favorite series along with Rainbow Six.........I'm psyched!!!
  • Nice, can't wait for this game. But the first RPG of November will be Mass Effect 3!!!
  • @122 Yeah, its quite a shame because I wanted to fully enjoy Mass Effect 3. But as soon as Skyrim comes out...I am so sorry Mass Effect!
  • Been looking forward to this, gotta say this article doubled my interest!!! Cant wait!
  • might have to pick this up! :D
  • This game gonna be GOTY 2011 xD, cant wait!!
  • This looks so interesting. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!!
  • I require some new pants
  • Good to hear there is no level cap, always disliked that in Fallout. Its good to get experience with everything you do. Even though I'm sure they will make the skills out at 100 again.
  • @94 My god, if you only played TES4: Oblivion for like 10-30 hours yet you said you liked it, you(r) either: A) Impossible to please B) Have the attention span of a five year old C) Couldn't/Didn't even bother to explore or do ANYTHING It's easy to spend countless hours in a good RPG but the fact that you say you "loved" it, yet you spent so little on it kind of speaks volumes about you (troll). Also, about the "look at games 5 years ago" comment, Oblivion was made 5 years ago so just think about that for a little bit.
  • Can't wait for the games of 2011 to start coming out!
  • I hope those 5 cities are really BIG... cause i was expecting much more than they had on Oblivion.. Like the map was DOUBLE the size of Oblivion I Hope The Arena, Thives Guild and Brotherhood still there...
  • I can't wait for the achievement list! i just hope that not every single achievement has to do with the main story and the guilds, like Oblivion. Seeing as how both Fallout 3 and New Vegas had achievements that took a bit of effort, it looks like Bethesda indeed figured that out :D Skyrim!
  • best game ever
  • This game is going to be NUTS I cant wait until some gameplay videos to come out
  • FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! @130 TBH I loved Oblivion after 1 hour! And that was my first time in the Elder Scrolls series, which got me into Fallout 3! This is gonna be so fucking sweet! Lets just hope that Bethesda dont fuck it up.
  • YES! This is amazing! Hopefully the town guards won't be cell phone equipped this time... :P
  • excellent, not worried about the whole me3 thing either, i cleaned a whole complete play through on 2 in a week so will do the same to make way for a year or 2 of constant play time for skyrim, think ill def install this one to stop disc dying, Cant wait for the collectors edition details!
  • I can still remember my first time playing this game. My friend got it for christmas, but he didn't manage to get out of the first dungeon (lol) so he stopped playing. I wanted to try it and I managed to make it out of the dungeon without problems and then I saw it! The beatiful world knocked my friend and I over and the same day I headed to the store and bought it. My favorite game of all time and have it on the xbox and PC with a play time of over 300-400 hours I think... maybe more :D
  • Oblivion without Fallout 3's leveling and perk system sounds awesome to me!
  • Really looking forward to this game
  • But have they put back all the awesome things they removed after morrowind? I found oblivion to be a massive disappointment & will no doubt be un-impressed by this also, Even semi mentioning a kind of level cap again 'sigh' (i was level 112 in morrowind by the way) It saddens me that bethesda are yet to better their GREATEST ever game & my all time favorite game & it was released almost a decade ago. So please return to your go ANYWHERE do ANYTHING roots & stop with doors that can't be opened and invisible barriers. I cant name any other RPG i played for so long 250+ hours & still hadn't done everything apart from Monster Hunter 400+ hours but it's not really an RPG so it doesn't count. Please skrim restore my faith in the elders scrolls series or will it just be another nail in the coffin?
  • @87 - Go away. Oblivion's lasted me over 100 hours. Try making co-op work...
  • So, two things: (1) Will I still have to sit in the corner of a room and grind out my skills for 3 hours before I get access to the good spells/abilities? (2) What the hell do they mean by "You can play Skyrim HUD free?"
  • Never mind, I just realized it, stupid mistake. I thought there was something else to promote Skyrim that you could play for free. I guess the cheapskate in me saw "free" and immediately assumed it meant "doesn't cost anything."
  • Haven't even played Oblivion yet and am already drooling for this one.
  • Now hitler can be happy in his bunker ;)
  • @147 Huh? OT: This is amazing news, all these changes souynd excellent. As for the "where's the multiplayer?" bastards out there, you want multiplayer, play some crappy MMORPG, stop trying to force this crap on a game that was invented for single player! BRING ON THE DRAGONS!!
  • Sounds like they finally revamped a lot in their engine. Sounds awesome and here is to hoping they make another Fallout game on this or even more improved engine^^
  • SWEET SWEET SWEET. I CAN'T WAIT. *talks using terrible internet etiquette*
  • OMG, i want it now, not november but NOW... sounds epic
  • This will stay in my 360 for two years straight.
  • i really hope that the game is multi player!!!!!!!
  • better be able to be an argonian
  • WANT
  • i want it naaaaaow!
