Microsoft Sell 8 Million Kinect Sensors In 60 Days

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has just declared - or rather reiterated - that Kinect has been a massive success since its launch in November 2010, enjoying an enormous boost over the holiday period, bringing the device's grand total of units sold up considerably.

In fact, Kinect was so popular over the Christmas period, that it has now sold 8 million units to date, reaching the target that Microsoft had set for itself.

Here's hoping that success spurs more third-party developers onto making games for Kinect this year and beyond.

  • How does that compare to Sony's motion controller?
  • @ 1: Much better.
  • Sony has 8 million "shipped" ;) hahaha
  • i love freakin kinect! that doesnt mean i forget about my other games but i still play the sh*t outa it
  • I got kinect for the holidays! Love it! Only complaint is I had to pay $40.00 for a plastic TV mount! Thats just a rip off! C'mon Man!!! But anyway, Kinect is awesome!
  • @ 2 I'm curious to know what Sony's numbers are. I know a lot more people who bought it. I'm supprised that Kinect sold so well with it's lackluster titles. I hope the software takes off for it soon. It seems like I bought a novelty. I do intend to use it to lose weight this year though. Maybe it'll pay off.
  • Still holding out until I see some better games, but I'm glad to see it doing good.
  • That's an impressive figure. I remember they were at 2.5 million and it looked like it would be close for them to reach 5. Lots of people must have gotten one for Christmas. I hope to pick one up soon and make it 8 million and one.
  • quite impressive numbers, but then again kinect is a lot of fun!
  • its funny to see that, and i can see why. at my work, we had requests for kinect, day after day before christmas; it was sold out everywhere kind of thing. i dont remember anyone asking if we had the playstation move stuff... kinect was in demand, which is a good thing i suppose.
  • @1: it doesnt compare, kinect blows Move out of the water. at this point, its not whether kinect or move is better, its in fact between the Wii and the PS Move. Kinect doesnt compete with those two...
  • Bring on viva pinata kinect.
  • I don't think Sony will have sold as much of Move as this, simply because this is family-orientated to say the least and Move seems to be focusing on the existing fanbase. Meh, I could get Kinect but the Nano edition of Crysis 2 will get more use than 20 minutes of Kinectimals and then getting bored.
  • I never thought they could do it. But I have to say congrats to them. Now just gimme more Halo and Gears and I'll be happy
  • kinect is cool but i hope it doesnt steal away from controller games.. wouldnt be fair for the handicapped gamers
  • Lets hope we see some Hardcore Kinect games coming soon. I would love to crush someones head with my hands HAHA.
  • So I remember when they estimated a huge number of sales and everyone was like "Hahaha no way". Well I bet a lot of us feel pretty dumb now. :(
  • @15, now introducing Kinect Effect! LEGS OPTIONAL!
  • @17 Hahaha yes i thought the very same thing. Especially after reading alot of comments here, 90% said No Way, not buying that "thing" i guess the other 10% is not here on XboX360achievements.org but is playing kinect. All 8.000.000
  • #1 its much better and less laggy - although the video calls over MSN seem quite slow and delayed Congrats Microsoft!
  • Glad I wasn't one of those numbers. Screw the Kinect.
  • As much as I was confident Kinect would do well, the overwhelming success has to be due in large part to the giveaways (Every Gamestop manager got one, who knows how many Burger King gave away with their 1/ hour or whatever, and it was featured on both Oprah (who gave them to her audience) and Ellen). Kudos to the MS marketing department, as they came at it from every angle! The biggest problem Sony had was that there was no reason (real reason or a marketed "you have to have it" reason) to get the Move if you didn't already have a PS3, and it was simply too expensive to buy for a family (PS3, camera, 4 Move controllers!) when the Kinect was set out of the box for a family, and came in affordable bundles (except for those damn stands/ mounts...saw the prices and took a chance, and luckily mine sits (barely) on top of my TV!).
  • I am not one of the numbers. Feels so good. I'd rather eat the rotten asshole of a roadkill'd skunk, and down it with beer.
  • im lovin my kinect, its had more use from me and the kids than my wii had in the 18 months that i had it,i would like a few more mature titles to play though, hopefully some come along soon,i remember hearing about a survival horror game,i think that would really work well with it p.s PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS
  • those poor people wait till they find out they wasted there money on a gloryfied cam
  • Lol there are people that actually bought this for weight loss purposes, how lazy, go for a jog. It is free you know.
  • Great, bigger fanbase, more games. Kinect haters guna hate.
  • PS Move = Wii Remote but i'm suprised it sold that many! haven'y bought it yet
  • #23 and #25 you are both tools. Have you actually tried it yet? I recently bought it and I must admit it is far better and far more fun than I thought it would be. Okay so the games arent exactly fantastic yet but when the original xbox came out there were only about 3 decent games for a while. As time passes more and better games will inevitably come out. Kinect is the future whether you like it or not.
  • Having a lot of fun with my Kinect. I'm all ready an active person so this is great for me. Been working out with YourShape, and it's a great compliment to my exercise regimen (or just play the olympian level on reflex ridge on KA - that'll get your heart rate up). I love only having 10 minutes to work out in the morning before work and being able to bust out a quick yourshape cardio routine (without having to get all the gear on!). I have all 3 motion control systems now. I'm holding onto my Wii for two reasons - Smash Brothers and the new Zelda. The move great. It puts the wii to shame completely...but you still have something in your hands. For this reason, I absolutely love the Kinect - HANDS FREE! Play YourShape and just TRY not to be blown away by how well it tracks you. If you have any complaints after that, you're just trying to hate Kinect. I am NOT playing Kinect exclusively. I'm working on Super Meat Boy right now, and trying to get 100% in my Katamari Forever collection. The damn Kinect is so exciting though! Just like the wii this will open up doors and make people look at gaming in a different way. The launch games are so impressive...imagine what's next! Do you smell that? It's the future!!!
  • Simple for me: Gears on Kinect - instant buy... one man needs his chainsaw gun!
  • @2 shipped units does not equal sold units. That just means the stores bought 8 million units not the customer's
  • great news 8))))))))
  • Even though Kinect sold more, PS Move is still far superior for us gamers. Simple fact that Kinect is competing with Wii (in family enviroment) adds up to their sales. Meanwhile Sony releases updates for older games (Heavy Rain, ahhhh^^) and coming bestsellers (Killzone 3 hehe). Thanks God Sony isn't as money hungry as Microsoft or else I would not know where to turn, surely not to Nintendo;-)
  • Hey #29 why do you call me a tool? Or did you mean "fool"? Well however, I know that Kinect (might!) be the future. As soon as adult games come out for Kinect I will get it too. Don't get mad, I just hate this sports, singing and childish bullshit.
  • so how many of these 8 million customers are now saving up for a new xbox? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12121999
  • Hey #36...you're an idiot, plain and simple. You are like every random person who comes crying to the forums whenever a dash update comes out and blame it on the update. It is coincidence, nothing more.
  • @#36 That is fucking brilliant! Sucks for all that bought and it DID happen, but there is always that risk when you buy new piece of tech (like 360 elite when it came out - I got 3 RDR in 2 years and exchanged consoles twice, at least it was for free...)
  • Im surprised it sold so well with all the boring games that came out for it.
  • I have the same complaint as #5 though. I don't want to spend $40 for a cheap piece of plastic to mount the thing on top of my tv to give myself more room. I think I'm just going to construct my own and it'll probably cost me a total of like $5. That being said, I think the Kinect is great. My family and I played it together on Christmas and had a blast. I'm just waiting for some games for the core group.
  • @ 26 Jogging doesn't earn achievement points.
  • Kinects success is a bigger deal than the moves because Kinect cost significantly more money.
  • @1 good question. I was looking up sales for systems and they bot had about 43million each(PS3/XBOX360) so PS3 does have a chance i just think people would want no controller more. I wish stupid Microsoft would leave there good technology to computers. OH and i have to say this. Seen a commercail yesterday about people that lost weight with EA active 2 LOL the games been out maybe 3 months. Needless to say the commercails a joke IMO well like most commercail.
  • #34 Two corrections. First: Heavy Rain wasn't a game. It was a crappy interactive movie. The Move integration was Wii-esque, at best. Second: Upcoming bestseller? Come on. Killzone 2 was supposed to be a "Halo 3" killer, and then Halo ODST comes out and tops Killzone 2's lifetime sales in literally 24 hours.
