Rock Band 3’s Fender Squier Guitar Scheduled for a 2011 Release

Those looking to pick up Rock Band 3’s speciality Fender Squier guitar – you know, the proper guitar that will work with Rock Band 3 – on launch will have to hold on to their cash until 2011 according to Harmonix and Mad Catz.

Showing off Rock Band 3’s range of instruments at EA’s Guildford offices in the UK last week, Harmonix PR guru, John Drake, told X360A that “The Fender Squier is coming out in 2011. This is a real guitar, it’s made by Fender.”

“We’re hoping to keep it as early 2011 as possible, but it’s sort of complicated,” he continued, “It’ll be worldwide in 2011; we’re hoping to sim-ship as close to sim as possible. The quantities will be very limited at launch, because it’s close enough to a specialty item almost.”

“It is going to be, yes, they’ve already talked to us about it,” jumped in Alex Verrey, the Mad Catz Global PR & Communications Manager, talking about whether it’ll be a simultaneous release, but take note: “You will still need a MIDI pro adapter,” he reminded us – which will costs £39.99 and be available before Christmas, meaning that most MIDI instruments will work... well, drums and keyboards anyway.

The console agnostic guitar is said to be “more expensive than the [Mad Catz] Mustang” and is “based on a $250 body, so it’ll be more than that” said Drake.

“The idea is to keep it at entry level and keep it accessible in terms of price, but it’s also like a crazy piece of technology that does stupidly complicated things,” he finished.

If that’s going to be too rich for your blood, then you can always stump up £124.99/$150 for the Mad Catz Mustang pro-guitar which is the only available pro-guitar at launch. Of course, the beauty of Rock Band 3 though will be that you can buy the standalone game if you like and use it with the plastic instruments that you already own, without any of the pro instruments.

I assume most people will be interested in the keyboard though which is £79.99 as a standalone option, £129.99 for that and the game; and £24.99 for the keyboard stand. Incidentally, that’s exactly what we tested out in our hands-on preview that we published yesterday.

Verrey also stated that with Mad Catz on peripheral distribution this time around, the countries that were unable to get instruments for the console versions before, will no longer have that problem from here on out. No specific countries were mentioned.

Rock Band 3 is out October 26th and October 29th in North America and Europe.

Think this might initial sales personally. I mean my wife already told that this thing is out of our price range, lol, but if I was to get this I would want the Squire and because of that I would wait until I could get it all in a bundle instead of shelling out for the game now, and then another $250 plus a few months later.

Since there's no longer country specific instruments coming out I'm hoping that also means that the track packs might come out elswhere too. Ah, one can dream.

@#5 - Works on any of the consoles. It's the MIDI pro adapter that's console specific.

this is actually good news. Harmonix may consider making a real bundle now with the new guitar and keys, which is all I really want. Plus I'm just starting to learn real guitar so I'll hold off on buying an electric until the Squier comes out

i take it that last paragraph is hinting towards the fact that the UK and most other countries have been stuck with series 1 instruments all this time, i myself am on my 4th rockband drum kit and am not happy about its subpar quality, shame on you harmonix.

@4 - What do you expect? It's a REAL Fender guitar. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't around $500 considering you can use it with any amp.

By the way, where's the real Fender Bass?!? You can't play a guitar the same way you play a bass, it just isn't right!

So you can either buy this one guitar or a new 360 with the same amount of money. Hard choice :O

=/

im curious on how this guitar will work out,

it reallly is a crazy piece of technology and cant be to simple to produce, and is very expensive, at least for a casual gamer

i wonder if it will catch on or only be for the "people who can actually play guitar"

if this idea of "video game/real guitars" catches on, this could be a whole new business and you could see other major companies, such as Gibson getting in on this and selling these babies for a pretttty penny

im sure this game will do wonderful, compared to most guitar hero's at least
and we alllll know GH7 will have pro type instruments

@12- I don't think that will happen. Judging by the pricetag of 250$ compared to a regular guitar at $300+ I dont think Gibson would waste money on develpoment of a low price tag niche guitar

I'm really losing interest in music games altogether. I'll get this if the keyboard is good, but there's no demo! And probably won't be. Unless it appears instore....

Just buy the MIDI adapter (£40) and a Casio MIDI Keyboard for £25 or a MIDI Guitar (for a lot more but less than $250-500!!!)

We have 6 guitars at home right now. Allthough it feel more real, it's not worth the extra cash to get those achievements. I'll rather buy a few extra new games instead. :)

@19 Please don't give people wrong information, you CANNOT use the midi pro adapter with a Midi enabled guitar, only the mustang and fender will work for pro mode as of now. You can however use midi keyboard and midi E-drum kits with the adapter.

I'm pretty sure the guitar's name is spelt 'squire, not 'squier'. Just thought I'd mention it.

1) i like the idea of pro mode.
2) i thought pro mode was the goal all along.
3)love the setlist,great all around!
4)dont like the cost of these instruments for a video game! this IS just a game! so now if i want all the ahcieves i need all new instruments, thats nuts! before you say i dont, understand i dont use ion drums. my instruments are GH:WT & work great with RB games! i use the lips mic but preffer mad catz RB mic. has a guide button & foan handle.

though i like the setlist. i'm passing on this now. instead of spending thousands on this. i'm getting kinect & having some unique games. heres a suggestion. make this kinect compatable so we dont have to buy extreamely expensive instruments. this is a cashcow, make it kinectable.

Damn that sucks. I've been looking to get a new Strat (I have an EVH Kramer, a Carvin, and a Les Paul) but I don't want to spend $500 on a Squier when I could get a decent real Fender for not much more...fuck.

Just wondering, does anyone know if the guitar that is in the Power Gig bundle would be usable in Rock Band 3? It's set up to work on the console already, would it not be cross compatible?

Also, I thought all peripherals were under some sort of rule or law, that they had to be cross compatible, using the same/similar tech, after the whole Rock Band guitar fiasco with Guitar Hero games?

I had a feeling this would happen and I've been wanting a guitar so I bought a real Squier which did cost me over $250. I realized then and there that the Pro guitar would cost me way more with all of it's additional electronics so I bought it and I still plan on getting Rock Band 3 when it comes out.

I collect everything Rock Band and have pre ordered the game and keyboard bundle AND the Mustang Pro Guitar. This news though says that the price for this Squier will be astronomical. I feel it will be over £250 for sure as the Wooden Fender Replica was £250 and this will have the strings and proper working guitar parts.

Yea, I learned guitar on a squier...when it came with a dinky little amp and is was $99 for the package...I know this guitar is laced up with a bunch of rad electronics that pick up your finger position, but it really is just an expensive controller. You won't be taking this bad boy to the stage and rocking out with it.

My suggestion: If you want to learn guitar and want to take advantage of the pro setting, just get the Mustang for $150, and buy yourself a decent entry level for a few hundred, and that'll still net you below $500. Or, buy a normal squier and the mustang for under $300. You can take your muscle memory from the frets and string positions and then start working on your callouses and techniques on the other.

@10 - jC Fr34X, @27 - wolfzero01, #34 - Cuddly Aardvark,

"It IS a real working Fender guitar. You can plug it into an amp and play songs and such."

No it isn't. It's not a Fender Stratocaster. It's a Squier. Squier is a small subset of Fender that makes cheap copy's. Squier's have body's and bolt on necks of cheaper wood, cheap electronics and pickups without electronic shielding, cheap tuning pegs and bridges, and are outsourced to be made in Asia in some factory, whereas Fender's are made in the US. I've got a Squier from a few years ago, if the build quality is anything like that guitar then it's worth $150 at the most. Fender Stratocaster's can be bought for a min of about $600, and those are the cheap ones.
