Duke Nukem Forever Officially Announced at PAX

Gearbox Software's Twitter feed got the jump on the announcement that Duke Nukem Forever is finally coming, with a revelatory tweet confirming what we all expected: "ALL HAIL THE KING!! Duke is back! Come check us out at the 2K booth at PAX!"

Unbelievably, Duke Nukem Forever is actually playable at PAX, so the bottom line is that all the rumours were true and anyone waiting in line at 2K's booth will be getting hands-on time with the game.

If you watched the UStream feed earlier, you'll have seen Nukem dual-wielding two massive guns while taking on an enormous bi-pedal mech/monster/thing in the middle of a rainy American Football stadium during the hands-on demo that greeted PAX attendees patient enough to queue up for some long overdue time with the Duke.

So, the wait is almost over. Duke Nukem Forever is actually coming, courtesy of Gearbox Software.

Groovy! Duke Nukem Forever is coming in 2011. Honest.

IMO it's too little, too late, I was really looking forward to this but it's been so annoying with all the "IT'S COMING...it's canceled...IT'S COMING...it's canceled..." I just lost the ability to care about it anymore, and with all the time spent deciding on if it was coming out or not the game has probably been horribly neglected, and I feel there is a good chance it'll turn out terrible unlike the rest of the series.

@21: If it's like Borderlands I won't touch it, Borderlands was a big let down with a boring story riddled with clichés and the worst ending of any game this generation, the game was only good because of the four player Co-Op, if this comes out next year I will not get it, if it comes out 2012 or later then I will because I'll know some work has actually gone into it.

@27. Gearbox did not make Halo: Combat Evolved, they mearely handled the duties of porting it to the PC.

How good can this game actualy be after a decade of development, delay and swithching of studios. I don't doubt Gearbox's talent, but the fact is that FPS have greatly evolved since the days of Duke Nukem. This is the kind of the game that harkins back to the steroid induced, over the top action movies of the early 90's. Despite the Expendables success, I seriosly doubt that kind of entertainment will ever be as relevent and popular as back then. The success of this game will soley rely on the nostalgia factor, but it will be hard to imagine that it can compete with the new generation of FPS.

Who cares its late and might not be as cerebral as todays games,its freaking Duke Nukem!!!It'll be fun to just have a fun shooter again without all the hollywood movie epic feel of Halo and Gears and the maddenly dragged out storylines like CoD:MW or the epic realism of war with Battlefield. This will just be plain balls to the wall fun,can none of us remember what that was like?before graphics was the issue,before hyper realistic sound effects,before HD and dare i say it,before achievements when games actually had to be fun to keep us playing,not just make achievements that mean collecting five hundred time wasting doughnuts for a measly 50gs?

For the twelfth time. Gearbox only PORTED HALO TO THE PC!!!! Bungie made Halo on the Xbox. They then started work on Halo 2 and didn't have time to port Halo to the PC, so they had Gearbox do it.

Been reading about this game since I was a sophomore in high school (yeah a long fuckin' time ago) so naturally I can't wait for it to come out. I just hope it has been worth the wait in even the slightest possible way, cause if it sucks it would be worse thing than premature ejaculation.

Stop bringing up Halo, Gears, CoD, or any of the fanboy titles in articles unrelated to them. I like reading peoples opinions of things, then I see some asshole bring up one of those games! Great Gearbox ported a Halo title on the PC, point being? Bungie developed Halo and the success of that franchise is theirs. Thanks to #21 using Borderlands and Brothers in Arms to point out Gearbox's success instead of using that they put their name on the fucking box for Halo. This was just another chance for a fanboy to blow Bungie again. Halo sucks now and it sucks Forever! No pun intended!

It will be so funny if it turns out to be a really bad game after all this time. To be honest, I dont know if its a good idea to release this game now because peoples expectations for this will be so high that it might not even be possible to make the game that good. uh, #83? They brought up Halo (PC) because Gearbox ported the game to the PC. So in a way, it is related.

And porting a game is just as hard as making it (well, not really). So if people think Gearbox did a good job of porting Halo1 to the PC, then don't be all like "NUH-UH THAT WAS ALL BUNGIE BUNGIE IS AMAZING!!1!". Bungie made the game, then Gearbox made it playable on the PC.

Sweet. I played the first (or second?) duke nukem like a year ago, and it was pretty fun despite being really old. Of course, it won't be worth the 10 year wait for the game, but that isn't Gearbox's fault. It would be the fault of the original developers. Let's hope it's good.

A thought I had just a bit ago... They should change the name. Seriously, think about it: people will expect Duke Nukem Forever to be more or less the perfect game when it comes out, since it's been in development for so long, but there's just no way they'd be able to satisfy everyone's expectations. If, however, they were to say this were a completely original, separate, game, but claim that they are still "working" on DNF... It'd potentially help lessen the blow of "This game's been in development for more than ten years; I expected more!" and, it'd allow the running joke of Forever to continue. XD

(And then when someone does come up with the "perfect" shooter (or perhaps the first -good- -true- VR shooter), they could pull the name out and use it then.)

Finally! I've been waiting for this game, I just hope they keep it based off the very first trailer for the game back in the 90s, when it looked fun as hell. My main concern for it not doing well isn't the game sucking, but many new age gamers discarding it for not being CoD, gears, or Halo, there's even been a few comments here with it! Remember Serious Sam? Those games were more action based than even Duke, and they did well, they were fun!

Something to note, not EVERY game has to be the exact same thing and the exact same style. Not every fps needs to follow the same formula, in fact I dare say it's time games spread out. Gaming is becoming a cespool of clones, just like the movies and tv shows. Sure it's action based run and gun, sure it's not serious, but damnit it's about time we have something to kick aside the bloom, browns, and grit...and bet on something else, perhaps we can bet on Duke to blow a gaping headwound in the danky realism of games today.

I thought today was weird but until I saw this I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. When I woke up this moring I looked out my window and saw some pigs flying. On my way to work in my car, the news guy on the radio said Hell had frozen over. I get to work, I power up my PC and check the gaming news and see that Duke Nukem Forever is going to be made and BAM...it hits me, now I see why today feels weird.

Duke is probably my favorite game character, and I think Gearbox's sense of humor is a perfect fit for this game.
