BioWare: Dragon Age & Mass Effect 2 DLC Sales "Exceeded Our Expectations"
Written Monday, August 30, 2010 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

BioWare have always said, and excuse me while I paraphrase here, but "If our fans buy our DLC and support us, we'll keep on delivering it."

While talking about DLC sales transparency at Gamescom recently, Ray Muzyka, BioWare CEO, told X360A that the support has been "outstanding" for the DLC thus far, allowing them to plough more cash into building more content.

"We know how it sells," chuckled Muzyka, "We’re really, really happy with it actually. Dragon Age has been outstanding, it’s exceeded our expectations; so has Mass Effect 2."

"So the fans have been incredibly supportive and that allows us to invest more back for them," he continued, "Building more content, making sure it’s really awesome, and try and sustain it post-launch. That’s one of our goals in all of our franchises."

With the Witch Hunt DLC for Dragon Age: Origins and Shadow Broker DLC for Mass Effect 2 coming out on September 7th, it seems as if BioWare are keen to continue this tradition.

Despite Witch Hunt being hailed as the last piece of Dragon Age: Origins DLC on the official website, BioWare even hinted that the support for Dragon Age may go on for even longer.

To get the full inside scoop from the doctors, check back on Wednesday afternoon, where we talk Mass Effect, Dragon Age and more.

That's fantastic news.
Though I haven't played Dragon Age, I love Mass Effect 1/2.
I would love some really huge DLC expansions to come out for ME2 eventually.

I hope BioWare will wake up and put more achievements...with significantly MORE gamerscore tied to them. I believe they are hitting 1750...or close to it with Dragon Age and I cant understand why they havent even remotely gotten close to that with Mass Effect 2. Honestly,...they should kinda be embarassed by the cheeves and gamerscore tied to ME 2 DLC so far.

@7, well given that this next DLC for ME2 has five achievements tied to it, I'd expect that to be a nicer amount than what we've been getting gamerscore-wise so far. (Though I can understand the lower gamerscore/achievement number with Zaeed and Kasumi, but Overlord I think could have easily had a bit more gamerscore and maybe another achievement or two tied to it)

But I have been very impressed by the DLC for Dragon Age. Outside of the Darkspawn Chronicles (which I enjoyed but it wasn't anything particularly great) the DLC for DA has been very high quality IMO. Cannot wait for Witch Hunt next week.

@#5 - Emotionally crap your pants? How do you clear that one up? A psychologist?
@#8 - Exactly my thinking. Going at their current rate at 55 achievement points for 3 pieces of DLC, we can expect another 37 pieces of DLC minimum... wait, that can't be right =P

@ Deathblow ... Bioware should be ashamed of the achievements linked to their dlc so far for ME2. I 100% agree, to be honest I can't even look at 1055 and think I'm done. It almost has me wishing they released dlc as they did for Mass 1 ... Gamerscore wise...not quality. My guess after Liara and Shadow Broker we'll be at 1115gs... Mark my words.

Bioware, you keep putting out great dlc and we will keep queueing it up. Can't wait for the 7th. And, as others have pointed out, ME2's low achievement score should mean they have a bunch more planned before number 3 hits. Maybe something along the lines of DA:A?

I find it very VERY hard to believe that at least the first 3-4 DLC packs for each game were not finished along with the game. Wouldn't surprise me if they all were...but still if the customers pay for it.

DAO's first two or three DLC segments were (many copies came with tokens for those add-ons).

ME2's first few DLC packs were free off of the Network, so that may be true as well. It's probably Kasumi was also done on or around the time the game came out.

That being said, take into account the fact that the game has gone gold and long-since sent off to manufacturing before the release date, and that does give studios time to work on the first few pieces of DLC should they choose to. It's not as if they are distinctly holding back so that they can charge extra for the DLC, but the window between manufacturing and release can now be filled with bonus content for the game.

Hopefully they release more DA:O DLC, achievements or not, I don't care.
Though I wish they made something which continues the story, so you can play after you've completed the game, or made a DLC in which you can still use your party.

The problem with ME2 DLC is that the achievement scores are so low. Three packs, 55 points. They need to increase the scores. Sure it could mean more DLC but how much can you get gamerscore wise out of that? Microsofts policy is with DLC a game can only have 79 achievements max. When they hit 79, assuming they do, we will end up with a completed score of like 1455 or something if all their scores are low. Just saying

Actually I don't remember Bioware stating that the Witch Hunt DLC was the last bit of content for Dragon Age. I think it was just this site misinterpreting the news, which for some odd reason, this site has been doing this a lot recently. They really only said it would conclude the story of Morrigan, not that it would be the last bit of DLC for DA:O.

No offense Bioware, but when the Community asks for DLC, it wants more than just an hour long quest or some re-skinned character suits and weapons. We want expansions! Although Bethesda released fewer packs, they have released more content for it's price. Release something that actually lasts an afternoon and we'll talk!

PS - I'm not saying that it's bad DLC, just their packs are a little bit light on the content side.

Valve had to fight pretty hard to get Microsoft to let them put 99 achievements into The Orange Box, and since then Microsoft has put a cap on allowed achievements, though I can't remember how many it was(I think it was like 80?)

Whilst I totally praise Bioware for releasing a bunch of DLC for ME2, I still have to say I'm quite frustrated about it too. I've been meaning to buy ME2 since release day, but with all this DLC coming out, I'd rather just wait for a GOTY edition or something similar. At this rate, a GOTY ed. might come out in a year or so, the DLC just keeps on coming!!

WIth DAO finally at 1750 next week, they'll have plenty of time to make some tasty DLC for ME2.

An extension would be a good start, just like Awakening. 250G.

And then 4 or 5 pieces of DLC with 50-100G each time and we'll be at 1750 in no time !!

@13 Most of the Mass Effect team at Bioware are working on ME3, it's a small handful working on DLC so don't worry about ME3, you'll get the story.

I've happily bought all costed DLC apart from the costume pack and am looking forward to the Shadow Broker DLC. To me the achievements added so far have actually been decent and seems to me what you put into getting them = the achievement score tied to them. Zaeed and Kasumi were loyalty missions, and the achievement score reflected the same as other characters loyalty achievements.

IMO, While Overlord was great it was still fairly short and the 2 achievements weren't hard to get, even on insanity, so there was no reason to have a large GS tied to their achievements.

Shadow Broker has 5 and hopefully Bioware will continue the trend of having effort=appropriate GS, make them more difficult to achieve and in doing so, increase their GS.

Lots more DLC at Overlord (or hopefully Shadow Broker) quality is no bad thing.

I hope we get more ME2 DLC. I must admit, I haven't actually played any of it yet, I'm waiting till I redo ME again with a character with all the decisions I want to carry over, then I'll do ME2 again with DLC.

As for Dragon Age, it's a fantastic game. I haven't completed or even played 2 of the DLCs yet, but I did buy them immediately.

Great to hear, but if they intend to carry on with DA:O DLC unfortunately they can't add on any more achievements, which could put some people off buying them anyway.

It's clear they're going to focus on ME2 DLC now I bet. DA:O has basically cleared itself up quite well and is close to finished, and now we can expect some frequent and hopefully more lengthy ME2 DLC.

More DLC is always a good thing.I wasn't always satisfied with Dragon Age's DLC,but I'm not complaining about it,either.Mass Effect 2 has had some great DLC (I'm still waiting to get Overlord) and they really do need to give us the weapons DLC for free with Cerberus. It's been kind of useless lately. What's the point of it anymore? But the ME2 gives great DLC,but needs to add much more gamerscore. It's all been said already, but I have no life and I'm bored,so why not post it?

Cerberus was to get you to buy the game new (such an EA tactic), nothing else (which is flawed since every rental store I know of leaves that code in the display case).

I'm going to wait for the GOTY edition for Dragon Age, the amount of money you could spend on DLC for that game is ridiculous (over $100 on msp now or something), and if it isn't ending I doubt I'll see my GOTY at all. I've been buying the DLC for ME 2 (only the story arc stuff) and more could mean a bigger hole in my pocket but I bought the first half so I'll have to suffer.
