Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Gamescom 2010: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Preview - Ork-some

The Warhammer 40k universe is one that should be ripe for epic games and amazing stories, though that has not always been the case when you look at the catalogue of games that have been based around the beloved franchise. In recent times though, things have picked up, thanks to the efforts of Relic Entertainment and their superb Dawn of War strategy games.

RTS titles have never quite worked flawlessly on the Xbox 360 and, with such a rich amount of source material on offer, it was only a matter of time before a fitting game emerged to fill the void.

Enter Space Marine, which is pretty much at the polar opposite end of the spectrum from the RTS genre; this game is less about strategy and more about eviscerating your enemies in an up close and personal manner. Although when you’re a highly armoured, seven foot tall, genetically enhanced super solider, that would probably be your obvious course of action.

The demo on show at this year’s Gamescom in truth was a little raw; plagued with frame-rate issues and dead bodies falling into the scenery, but with this being an early build of the game, we can forgive those flaws for now. The real question is whether or not the game can compete with the big boys. Despite the fact that Warhammer 40k has been around for years, it will probably be unable to shake the copycat tag that comes with a game featuring a well armoured space marine. Not to mention the fact that the combat is more than a little similar to Gears of War et al.

Relic were keen to stress the differences though. They had toyed with the idea of a cover system, but then decided that it was completely out of character for the titular character to hide from anyone. Instead, the tough as nails hero, Captain Titus, would rather face his enemies head on in a blaze of glory. Despite his bulky armour and regenerative health, he is not invincible so quick reactions plus a steady aim are the key to taking down the horde of foes that will assail you. You can also gain new skills with all of the weapons the more you use them, so for example, the Plasma Gun acquires a charge shot ability once you have used it for a while. It means that your favoured weapons can get extremely powerful, and the upgrades are persistent so even if you drop a weapon and pick it up later, you will still have all the upgrades you attained.

The other neat additions include both the special attacks and melee combat, which are available to you in order to cut a swathe through your enemies. Nothing says “Get out of my way!” like a few feet of buzzing chainsword. A touch of the shoulder button takes you into close combat mode pretty seamlessly and you can chain attacks together to decimate whole rooms full of enemies before switching back to your trusty sidearm to finish them off. The idea is an interesting one and the transition is pretty fluid, although how many people would stop firing long enough to engage in some fisticuffs instead, is debatable, that’s why the inclusion of over the top instant kill moves make it worth your while.

The storyline and setting is also looking to draw upon the rich tapestry of Games Workshop ideas. An imperial Forge World, responsible for mass production of weapons, has been overrun by Orks so, as a holding measure, a small group of Space Marines have been sent in to hold up the attack. Obviously a marine is worth hundreds of ordinary men, and coupled with the fact that they will pretty much never fall back means that a mere holding action was never an option. Your goal then is to purge the Ork horde in whatever way you can, though fans may be discouraged to know that none of the other powerful races from the 40k library will be making an appearance during the single player campaign. It is a shame really as the Orks always came across as one of the least interesting races mainly due to the fact they were generally pretty dumb and lacking in any motivation other than beating up on humans. So whether or not we can expect a gripping story will depend on how well the conflict pans out and what kind of set-piece moments will really make the game unique.

Nothing was divulged about the multiplayer modes or co-op elements of the game – though Relic did confirm that both would feature in the final product next year. At the moment the game is looking solid but not spectacular, though with a bit of fine tuning it could well be something special especially for gamers with even the slightest interest in the 40k mythology.

Space Marine is scheduled for a 2011 release.

I really like the Warhammer universe and i enjoyed Dawn Of War 1-2. I'm only disappointed that we play as the smurfs. Why isnt Relic taking their own chapter the Blood Raven? When i play as a smurf i want to see that i'm fighting against Tyranids.

I just thought of something why don't they make it a deathwatch kill team since you are only going to have 4 marines overall.

@18 true but im sure in a few screens floating around the web showed a chaos marine or 4... if thats the case the unforgiven will own the planet and i honestly doubt the story will be as simple as

Forgeworld + orcs= space marine rampage

just from the DoW games they like there plot twists.. eldar? chaos? nids?,,
i would put money on the story being Far from simple!.. it better not be a generic copy past story or kittens will be going into bins!

"It is a shame really as the Orks always came across as one of the least interesting races mainly due to the fact they were generally pretty dumb and lacking in any motivation other than beating up on humans. " Orks are meant as general entertainment, as comedic relief. To have to choose one 40k race for an entire entertainment experience, Orks give the most latitude. They can be written funny, but must be taken seriously in combat.

Games workshop is a little creepy. Scratch that, a lot creepy.

It's un natural to walk past a shop that has about 10 kids aged about 10-13 playing with a 40 year old fat guy.

However, Warhammer games are generally quite good. Dawn of War: Dark Crusade was a great RTS. So I may give this one a go. I'd have preferred to go up against Chaos, the Tau or Necrons, in fact, pretty much any race but Orks... Edlar, Dark Eldar, Tyrannids... All would have been better imo.

@26 nice stero typing there mate..why not just say all the adults in GW are peds/fat etc etc,, lol

now people saying oh "orcs" think about it, Orcs are not dumb there barbaric but not stupid, they live to fight so they do and i prefer to fight orcs over others, and there almost as iconic as the spacemarines

Chaos.. yes fight chaos.. reskin marine = chaos.. Dull
Tau... no thanks there more dull than dark elder
Elder.. could be in game they use other races to achive there goals..
Necrons.. could be in game easy.. wouldnt be the first forge world built on a necron shrine world.. *cough* Mars *cough
Tyrannids.. would be good but sadly unless its a infiltrate swarm not likely soon as a hive fleet is found the imperail navy would be there.
Dark elder.. nah have less depth than tau

in interviews when pressed about other races theyve refused to comment..so who know they could be in there just underwraps.

gonna be a great game!

@26 you know its people like you who should get out more, not the 'creepy' people from GW.

@30 Dark Eldar are dull?!?!?! they may not have much background but their inclusion would open the game up to a whole wide world of torture, gore, and general Alien-esque shock tactics. it would be really refreshing to have the first part of the game hack'n'slash, then another part of the game horror filled. would be sick! XD

"We don't fight fer food, or fer teef, or guns, or cos we's told to fight. We fight cos we woz born to fight. And win."

@ 24 You obviously don't understand the Orks at all if you think they aren't interesting.

I'll be looking forward to fighting against the green tide whenever this game comes out.

@33- Read the end of the damn preview....

I have to say I am looking forward to this game (along with DoW2: Retribution) and I disagree with the guy: To me, the Orks are the MOST interesting of all the xeno races in WH40k. They are just badass and unique in ways the other xeno (Eldar, Tau, Necron, and even the 'Nids) can't be. (RED UNZ GO FASTA!)

Oh yeah, It's all about the Imperial Guards! For Tanith!

@30 Tau are dull? I guess you never actually play/played Warhammer 40k. In my opinion, Space Marines are dull because they are the 'been there, done that' race. Now the Tau are much more unique, which make them much more interesting. Besides, Tau are THE best are long ranged fighting. They just suck at Close Combat. If you know what you're doing, the Tau should win every single battle, every time. Even in lore, the Space Marines could never beat the Tau forces. The Tau are actually smart enough to know when to retreat, instead of the Orks with there kill or be killed strategy.

The Tau better be in this game. I'm sick of each game only using the basic Imperium of Man Vs Tyranids, Eldar and Orks.

@40 IMHO it's debatable if Tau IS the best at long ranged fighting seeing how Imperial Guards artillery and armored vehicles are pretty damn formidable too. However I do agree with you about the Space Marine been overused, but we can't help it because the game is ultimately going to be about those giants clad in power-armors and for a brutal "intense" action game like this one is turning out to be, the orks or one of the other basic xeno race might be the better choice to be pitted against the Space Marines.

If they decided to make another WH40k game primarily focusing on the "shooty only" side of 40k then Tau (or IG) would obviously make a better choice.

I am ignoring Firewarrior the game here I know.

30 is right about the interview. There is a possibility of another race since it's not that simple. Plus there's an Inquisitor involved in the story along with his "prototype weapon/device" and we all know about Inquisitors....

@40 I played Wh40k and warhammer for 18y years mate :)and have on avg 12k points of, Chaos(mainly demons) IG,Orcs, Tau(shocking i know!) SpaceMarines, elder, Dark elder, only had about 5k of necrons though,,

each race is great at something but standoff shooty shooty as someone put it is not what i enjoy, like all races Tau should win every game up until my GK's make contact..

each there own mate you like them i dont ive played them

OT: if they put other races in game not to please the fanboys(im one!) but to serve some real purpose/story then bring it on.. if they put them in just to look good..dont want to see them, and i hope to hell theyve done a great plot and story not the genric

Just to clarify. We asked the developer straight out if other races would feature in the game and he said, for single player, it would be Orks only. He could well have been having us on I suppose - but that is a direct quote so I wouldn't get top hyped over other races popping up.

Also, I've played 40k myself and just find the Orks fairly uninteresting. However, they are the perfect choice for a game due to the fact they are instantly recognisable and can provide the overwhelming numbers to suit the combat.

In saying that I wouldn't be shocked if other races turned up in multiplayer.

Hmm, this should turn out to be interesting. I remember playing Warhammer 40k: Fire Warrior on the pc some years ago which was an FPS and also by THQ. That game was sub par in my opinion during it's time so I guess we'll see how this one ends up being.
