Red Dead Redemption Legends & Killers Hands-On Preview - Bringing Back The Old Skool

We know Red Dead Redemption is good. We've all played it, most have finished it and some have even become entangled in its multiplayer free-roam as well as its numerous competitive and co-op game modes. For those people, Rockstar has got you covered with a whole host of upcoming multiplayer DLC, which kicks off next week with the Legends & Killers game add-on.

Expanding Red Dead's multiplayer with eight characters from Red Dead Revolver, nine new territories for competitive modes and a new weapon in the Tomahawk, Legends & Killers gives you plenty of new stuff to discover. Possibly the finest addition to the game's arsenal of bolt action rifles and six shooters, is the Tomahawk, which proves to be enormous fun on certain maps and match types, such as a Shootout Match on the new Rio Bravo map. The Tomahawk is indispensable for dealing out a quick and silent death while sneaking between the narrow gaps in the dusty mountainside, hiding behind the rocky outcrops with the throwing weapon at the ready.

Sat in a room filled with UK press and a handful of journos from Spain, we heard nothing but laughter for the entire match as Tomahawks were liberally thrown into heads, limbs and spines with a satisfying thud, as you can execute an opponent with a single strike in the right place. However, in a match where anyone can use guns, the Tomahawk is useless at range, unless you can get some height on your throw, judge the trajectory and bag a Hail Mary kill and an achievement if you manage to bag a kill from 35 metres or more. Here's hoping that Rockstar take our feedback and add a 'Tomahawks only' mode.

The Rio Bravo map, which lies between Fort Mercer and Tumbleweed, is perfectly designed for a Tomahawk face-off, with its tight winding nooks and deliberate lack of weapon pick-ups making each game a frantic skirmish. Moving onto the Fort Mercer map, and the Tomahawks are out, but the old Repeater Carbines and revolvers are in, as the walls of the stronghold make a game of Gold Rush – grabbing as many gold bags as you can and returning them to the closest drop point – a close-quarters affair, meaning that the sawn-off shotgun comes into its own. Yet, given the vantage points among the battlements, you'll need to be able to juggle long and short-range weapons quickly, which can occasionally be a bit difficult with the game's radial menu. Still, it's a test of how fast and steady that trigger finger of yours is, so it's fitting really.

From struggling in a free-for-all grab for gold bags, to a team game of Grab the Bag in Thieves Landing, the pace is every bit as frenetic as each team battles for ownership of a bag of gold that spawns in areas equidistant from each base. The aim is to pick up the hotly contested bag of gold and run it back to your team's drop off as fast as possible and outscore the opposing team. That's easier said than done of course, and the match descends into an all out war for control of a flimsy rope bridge, flanked by a Gatling gun emplacement in the centre of the map. Jumping behind the Gatling seems like a good strategy, but you instantly paint a target on your stupid face in doing so. Also, Red Dead Redemption's movement can sometimes make you overshoot the precarious, narrow planks, sending you barrelling into the swamp like an idiot. And as you well know, contact with water in Red Dead is fatal.

Next up is a Gang Shootout in Mexico's Escalera, which you will remember as the home of the corrupt Mexican military. Here, you're again locked in an intense fight, but this time you and your team need to take the high ground up in the villa and the surrounding towers. From here, the opposing team has little chance of removing you from the advantageous position, so clever thinking and careful strategy is required. Having lost the high ground quickly at the beginning of the match, we managed to sneak around through the main entrance to the villa, where we flanked the towers in front of its open veranda and dug out our rivals with a few blasts from the pump action shotgun. As we assaulted the interiors, the rest of the team dealt with the other houses and provided covering rifle fire from the outside. High ground duly gained, we fought valiantly, but lost by a measly two kills. Tough luck, cowboy.

We finished our Legends & Killers hands-on with Hold Your Own matches in the snowy mountain climes of Tall Trees and the labyrinthine alleyways and streets of Blackwater. This is essentially capture the flag, but with those ubiquitous gold bags stationed at each team's base instead of out in the middle of the map like Grab the Bag. We quickly find that in Tall Trees, you need a horse to cover the vast snowy area, and with only trees and the occasional rock for cover, you're incredibly vulnerable to a bolt-action bullet to the head. Both bases in Tall Trees are entrenched in a rocky bay, so the ideal tactic is to move in with a pincer movement from all sides to pick off the defenders and make a rush for the loot.

The same is true in Blackwater, except here you have the backstreets for cover and the buildings for perfect sniping spots. There's always an ideal strategy, and here we act as sniper on a rooftop overlooking the opposing team's base. As our team makes a bid for the bag, we pick off any defenders and leave the way clear for a quick escape back to our base for an easy point. Incidentally, you also get the Tomahawk in the Tall Trees level, but there's rarely cause to use it as you leave yourself wide open to attack. It's best left to the much more focused Rio Bravo map.

Red Dead Redemption's Legends & Killers DLC almost doubles the number of competitive maps available, which is a nice addition in its own right. Factor in the Tomahawk – which we have to stress, really is a lot of fun in the right situation – and the eight returning characters from Red Dead Revolver – including Red Harlow, Jack Swift, Shadow Wolf and Pig Josh - and the first paid-DLC should prove a treat for fans and multiplayer aficionados alike.

Red Dead Redemption's Legends & Killers Pack will be available from August 10th, 2010 and will cost 800 Microsoft Points. If you want to see what the achievements might be like for the DLC, head on over to our sister site and check out the trophies.

Was hoping for a couple more hideouts but hell PVP needed stuff more I guess. Still a must buy for me as my posse sessions usually end up in hour long throwing knife fights anyway so the Tomahawk will be a welcome change

@3 they will but remember it took TLaD a year to come out so anything massive will be some way off. By doing this type of DLC it stops what happened to GTA in as much as the online populaion disappearing for months before a big DLC pack

This would sound like a lot of content if anyone really still played the competitive match types....I mean, does anyone here? I think most people are going to buy this just for the new playable characters and the tomahawk. Most people will probably tire of using the tomahawk pretty quickly, so I am torn about the price. 800 points for some characters and a throwing axe.....I just dont know.

I cannot wait for this. I was hoping they would use Blackwater for some Hold Your Own. With out this, Blackwater seems kinda useless in the multiplayer

@2- Not that much content? There are 9 maps, 8 characters, 1 new weapon, and achievements. People are still paying 1200 points for 3 new and 2 old COD maps, now that is content that isn't worth the price.

To begin with, luckily I have 810MS points so I can get this, but like @17 said, WHAT ARE THE ACHIEVEMENTS!?!? I mean besides the hint given in the article about the tomahawk from 35 meters or more. Anyways, this DLC and the other 3 before the end of the year are a buy for me!

I want this pack strickly for the Revolver characters & the Tomohawk weapon. The multiplayer modes just aren't that fun & there's really only like 2-3 different modes total for multiplayer.

Still think this pack along with the Liars & Cheaters one should be 400 points each. 800 points is understandable for the Undead Nightmare one, but that's because it adds new single player content, along with new multiplayer stuff, new animals, new playable multiplayer characters, a new weapon & other stuff.

By looking at the trophy list, it seems some of the new achievements could be attainable without the DLC.

Who needs Deadeye? - Kill 3 or more players in a standoff or showdown.

Stick and Move - Get 3 kills with knives or throwing knves in a single competitive match

Headhunter - Kill 5 players via headshot in a single Shootout or Gang Shootout.

Legendary - Reach level 50 and pass into Legend.

Since no-one else complains about this, am I the only one still having a lot of multiplayer glitches? I can't connect after the second update, when looking for a game mode I get put in a different one etc. These problems started over 2 months ago.

I see no way of enjoying this DLC if I can't even play it, unless I have to play in Private mode again. Hurray...

@13...It isn't 9 new maps. It is 9 new locations for multiplayer matches on the SAME map. That is what people are talking about, including myself. If it was 9 completely new maps then of course it would be worth it but I just don't see 9 new locations for a game variant hardly anyone touches anymore as a reason to beef the price of 400 worth of good content (the characters and the new weapon) up to 800 for what I consider fluff. It would be like BFBC2 charging for those so called "map packs" that they released, which are only game type variants on the same maps. You have to be a VIP of course, but if you bought the game, you are anyway.

@ 26: thoretically, yes. But chances are the achievements wont be enabled unless you buy the DLC. A lot of games do this.

And I find the multiplayer really fun and addicitve, Day 1 for me on this DLC. Been winning a ton of shootouts and gold rush matches so looking foward to getting more cheevs under my belt :D

@Shaun72

Your logic is totally flawed. First off, while the maps are areas from the game, they are reworked for multiplayer. Just like the ones that are already in, the will have different elements to balance and make them multiplayer friendly. So work WAS done on the maps, it's not like they just clicked YES on "add other maps".

Secondly, TONS of people play competitive. I'm not going to say that more people play it than Free Roam, but there is an insane amount of players on competitive. RDR is the third most played game on XBL at the moment (only behind Halo and CoD). Every time me and my friends join Gang Matches or Free For All, it becomes a full 16 player room VERY quick. And that is every day, multiple time a day.

Legends and Killers -- 9 New maps, 8 new characters, a new weapon with associated challenges in Single Player and Multiplayer for 800 MSP

COD:MW2 -- 3 new maps and 2 old maps copy/pasted for 1200 MSP

Sure, Legends and Killers is WAY too much.

@38

The Tomahawk is being added to single player and will have special challenges and new executions.

Damn this is going to be awesome! As a huge fan of Red Dead Revolver then on my old trusty xbox i played it for days in and out, seeing finaly the great main caracters back in this DLC pack sure is the best news ever! Playing as Red Harlow sure boost my urge to play this more. The tomahawk sure is cool but as said its mainly a close combat weapon and as the guy said its useless in a way if all others running in guns blazing lol. But is nice Rockstar adding so much DLC,s for this game to keep players around the world happy like me, even i agree those DLC,s should only be up to 400 microsoft point not 800! As basicly u only get 8 multiplayer caracters and a weapon plus 3 new (well new!)locations.

HA, I love the people hating on MW2's maps. I hate to say it, but THEY'RE probably better. It's alright saying it's 800 for 9 new maps, and 1200 for 3 on COD, but at least on COD the maps are actually NEW. The maps included here are just BS that are already on the game, being converted into maps. No thanks.
I might pick some DLC up if they make some more single player stuff, but the online on this just fails to appeal to me. I mean, the multiplayer free roamings good, but i generally dislike the game modes. And the tomahawk? NO.
OH, and before someone accuses me of being a MW2 Fanboy, i don't own a single piece of DLC for it, because i, for one, refuse to be screwed over by Activisions BS pricing.

Hate to say it, but you just practically argue that paying 800 points for the tomahawk alone was justified. So, no offense intended, I would have to suggest your logic is flawed :/

You talk about flawed logic .... yet you think that 6 new maps for 2400MSP (£20 quid may I add) is worth it ... AHEM. There are no achievements, no alterations to the gameplay. Two of the new maps on it are the size of my living room and they advertise is as FIVE new maps per pack, supposedly justifying their price. Tell you what I'll buy COD4 for £15 (CHEAPER than the DLC) and get those four maps.

At least Rockstar are mixing it up a bit and changing things while offering their gamers new content at the same time. Activision ... keep things the same and rip off their gamers ..... one winner if you ask me.

Just for the record, this time last year I was a COD fanboy and have maxed them all out 'cept COD3 (Cause that one was just silly) but I have completely gone off the franchise now. We keep them in busines, why the FUCK ARE THEY SCREWING US OVER!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly you didn't read what i EVEN PUT. Okay, i shall quote myself 'OH, and before someone accuses me of being a MW2 Fanboy, i don't own a single piece of DLC for it, because i, for one, refuse to be screwed over by Activisions BS pricing.'
Maybe you should read what i put first, idiot. I quite clearly stated that the COD maps are NOT WORTH IT. All i was stating is at least the 3 maps are new in COD, whereas the red dead ones are already IN THE GAME.

We all know you do in fact own the maps yet your going to lie to us about it so you don't sound like a CoD fanboy just so you can hate on Red dead a bit without feeling guilty. (We arn't dumb)

And you to whoever said it his logic is truly 100% flawed.

it's cool but in my opinion some "new" map, a reskinned throwing knife and some new skins is not worth 10 bucks... but we ALL got to admit that throwing tomahawk as being the natives in this pack look to be fucking awesome!!!
still I wont buy this.

10 bucks is a lot for a few maps an a ax.damn i like the times when u could buy lost and damned for only 10 bucks more an have a whole new game.i love RED DEAD but its to much they should make single player add ons like gay tony that was good multiplayer was added on with both GTA4 DLC PACKS i got more with the free co-op DLC for RED DEAD than the killers DLC ANY WAY rockstar needs to hook us all up like GTA4 style.
