Bungie Clamping Down On Quitters In Reach

One of the things that developers have really overlooked in recent years is truly punishing those who quit out of online multiplayer games and ruin the online experience for everyone else involved.

Speaking to X360A this week, Bungie’s Community Director, Brian Jarrard, while talking about what they’ve done in Halo: Reach to deal with those that constantly break the rules, mentioned that the quitters might be in for a bit of a shock this September.

“I think one of the new things people will be excited about too, is how we’re going to be able to penalise people who are habitually quitting out of games, which isn’t exactly cheating, but it creates a really negative experience for everybody else in the game,” explained Jarrard.

“We actually have new tools now to detect that and eventually, people who do this habitually will actually be penalised,” he continued, “We want to be able to remove them from the population so they can’t make everyone else keep having a bad time.”

The words of Jarrard will be welcomed by all – except those that habitually quit, d'uh – as they’ve been a plague on the online community for quite some time.

Don’t say you haven’t been warned.

In the interview with Jarrard and Campaign Designer, Niles Sanky, that’s due to be published sometime over the weekend, Jarrard talks about some of the other improvements that have gone on behind the scenes to improve the online experience as a whole. So keep an eye open for that.

  • A bit extreme. But hell, I ain't complainin.
  • Not much in to the MP side of Halo games, but maybe this will work out and others will go "lets do what they did."
  • nice i hate quitters especially when your in team deathmatch and 3 of the other team leave aqnd your left fighting 1 person and he doesnt leave hate it
  • Ugh... The only people who get frustrated over quitters are those that play competitively. I don't want to be penalised for having to use the loo during a game, or going to get some food out of the oven. Just penalise quitters in competitive playlists, where it matters.
  • SO U GET BANNED? wow thats stupid
  • lol how silly
  • its a good idea but i quit a little bit myself but not enough 2 piss people off
  • sounds like Bungie is gonna start drop kicking some quitters.
  • what about if you have to quit...sometimes you have to for a number of reasons, I don't mind just having a blank spot and joining a session in progress....
  • Yay for that! Honestly, I can't take sore losers :P
  • This was announced waaaaaaay before the game got a release date. And was put into action during the beta.
  • what if you keep losing connection or you have to go quick ?
  • but what if your playing nd your parents want to go somewhere and you have to leave!! D:
  • @#4 - Well, I assume that they're talking about ranked stuff. And if you're quitting during ranked games - which is competitive - then I suppose you get what you deserve.
  • And it's only if you do it constantly. So if only do it every now and again I'm sure bungie won't penalise u
  • So if i suddenly get a storm and my internet connection gets turned off Bungie bans my ass of from Halo Reach? If yes, im seriously considering purchase of this game.
  • Okay, so some people are missing the word "habitually" - it means constantly. Quitting once because of a storm, or twice a month because of power outages, does not mean habitual.
  • 'but it creates a really negative experience for everybody else in the game' And so the cure is to force players being spawn trapped, or truly whooped so bad that they really can't do anything, to stay in the game? Rage quitting is part of the online experience, almost everyone has done it at some point, it's no worse than camping in a game, it can be annoying but is it really bad enough to be penalised over?
  • Habitual quitting is when people make a habit of it (duh). Those of us who rarely quit will be fine.
  • @#16 No, it does not mean that at all. Read the article, like, no where does it say anything like that.
  • Did people miss that the guy said only "those that habitually quit" will have a problem? If there's a storm that knocks out your power once, you won't be banned.
  • Why dont they just replace the quitter like Call of Duty... PROBLEM SOLVED
  • @#18 - I can honestly say I've never raged quit thank you very much. Even if our team got beat 50-0 (although that's never happened =P), that still would not give me an excuse to quit.
  • It sounds like it's only for th people that do it often, so leaving here or there to do something that don't count. But there are always people quiting because they don't like the game mode, or didn't get a power weapon right off the bat. It's pretty bad in Halo. Just doesn't have to be ranked matches, because when half your team leaves because something went wrong and your stuck being spwan killed for the next 10 minutes doesn't make playing for fun happen. The problem I see now is since they can't quit they will just kill their team until they are booted which can be worse. So unless they add that into the mix it's still going to be a ruined experiance for people who just want to play.
  • @18 - They are talking about "habitual" quitters. Unless you quit 5 games in a row, every single day you play Halo, then I am sure you will not be penalized. This penalization is only directed towards those individuals who either purposely quit games over and over again in one sitting. Quitting one or two games, with a few completed games in between, will not get you in trouble from Bungie.
  • i can see that most of the people complainin here are quitters lol
  • Fuck this, I quit :p
  • What about people who purposely don't play? They should implement some type of system like CoD that boots a person who doesn't play for a certain amount of time. That's just as annoying as someone who quits because not only are they not playing but it's free kills. Either way I don't mind if people quit in Reach as much as Halo 3 only because you still get credits if you lose and it's based on how valuable you were to your team(kills, assists, etc.)
  • This could be a good and a bad thing. Something they'll have to decide is "what is a habitual quitter". Quitting out of a few games in a day? A few in a week? I could see this having some problems, I know my internet connection usually drops me at least twice per online session, so there are people that want to play the multiplayer but have a hard time staying connected. I really only get upset if I'm playing doubles and my teammate quits out.
  • It's probably only going to affect the people who will quit out of every game they are in until they get "their map" and "their game type" because they're so pro they can only play Slayer on Lockout.
  • @18 - If you "rage quit" then you need to stop playing games. I have been in games where my team got no kills (i play Gears) and i never left. ITS CALLED BEING A MAN!!!!!!
  • I think its good for people who purposely quit all the time, but I think part of it is at the games fault too. Unless its the host, I honestly don't mind if people quit in Call of Duty. People can join mid-game to replace those who quit. One thing I always hated about Halo is that people can't join mid-game. So if everyone on your team quits you're basically screwed.
  • So if i have a social life and i play games.. i need to stay until the game ends until i can leave? hmm one or the other a life or halo.. What a tough decision. Also what about if my connection drops? or power goes out often in my suburb? Do i get banned for leaving? Lol how ridiculous but thats Bungie they love to play god.
  • They announced this sometime ago and exlained most of it, if I remember right it isn't a permanant ban more of a temporary suspension from the matchmaking and I guess the more you quit the longer the ban
  • @23 Seriously? Not even in MW2 if your team is getting spawn killed like crazy for a couple matches? If you don't quit than I must tip my hat off to you... Well I need to find a hat first. *Finds a hat and tips it* XD
  • @29 I'm in the same boat as you I get cut-off about 4/5 times per day because AOL is ****. So if I get disconnected from 4/5 days everyday for a week or so the ban hammer will smash me ??? I am assuming disconnection=quitting because otherwise you could just pull out ethernet opposed to quiting. Another bungie ****-up !!!
  • My god, people sure can't read on here. IT SAYS HABITUALLY. Which means, if you quit like every single game consecutively for an hour or something. Bungie said months ago they would have a way to check if it's connection error, and if it only happens once in a while due to having to go or storm power outage, you'll be fine. And if anything, they said bans will usually only be for a few hours to 24 hours for the first few bans, so it's not like your being banned forever.
  • @#35 - I've played a 3 hour Bad Company 2 rush match where the other team were meant to be attacking and were just hiding. Didn't quit then, won't ever quit =P Also, people are still missing that habitual part. Don't make me bold it *shakes fist*
  • Dang. I don't like to quit but sometimes things happen and i have to turn off the xbox and leave real quick. Bungie that is not fair! F U!
  • Its only if you do it habitually
  • @39 That sounds boring as hell to me. You might as well bold it because a lot of people just don't seem to understand it.
  • lolololo @ 13.
  • Well, they do deserve it... And it's just if you quit a lot you will feel it.
  • @37 "Bungie said months ago they would have a way to check if it's connection error" Amen for that, my connection can get finicky so I'm glad they can tell the difference between quitting and lagging out.
  • This would suck if your connection dropped a lot, but at least quitters will be gone. I hate games that only give a small penalty in rank and that's it.
  • I can see both negative and positive effects by this. First of all, connection problems, some just have bad luck. Or you just suddenly have to go and can't finish the game. I know they say if it's habitually but still...
  • Sweet. For all of you freaking out, it says "people who do this habitually," which means you don't have to worry about quitting once and getting banned. Read the article people.
  • Someone mentioned the Call of Duty method of adding new players to an existing round from matchmaking. I would prefer a quitter leaving an empty spot on my team over all of the other issues that every single Activision title has when playing online. Whether it is Transformers with a lack of host migration, or the Call of Duty tendency to only place three out of four members of my party into a game because there was only three spots. (When there was only three spots, place my party of four in a different round.) I play tons of titles online, but Halo is the one thing I am always comfortable with coming back to. The biggest reason is how dependable their matchmaking has always been with Halo 3, except for a two month period in early-middle 2009. Bungie is doing this because enough of their customer base must have made a fuss over the quitting becoming a problem. You see, Bungie has a healthy habit of fixing issues that their customer base wants fixed. For that reason, I will be buying Reach on day one.
  • Sometimes quitting creates an advantage to the team wit more players. And sometimes to the team with less. The boosters are what need to be banned im tired of playing a 50 corporals and people with little to no experience. That's what they should be fixing
  • So im going to get banned if every once in a while I cannot finish a game due to me having to leave the house right away or even if the power went out or something like that. How about they worry about the cheaters who find a way to somehow magically go beyond the "invisible wall" and kill ppl from secret places not ment to be in the map.
  • We need more things like this. Bungie havesome really great ideas.
  • I don't understand all the rage about Bungie trying to do something about the fools that quit for the multitude of reasons. I know I get sick of people on Halo 3 and MW2 saying "oh I'm doing crappy I'm gonna dashboard so this ain't on my stats". It's the same on many games with all the quitting so why get mad about it when someone takes the initiative and actually does something about it. The people who say they get dropped out of games because of crap internet need to spend the extra $$$$ and get better service. Also if you are gonna post and say that you cant afford better service then maybe you shouldn't be wasting your money on video games and internet in the first place.
  • This is an incredibly stupid move by Bungie, being forced to play in a game with people you might not like/screaming kids/eventual glitchers/modders etc or face "being removed" is insane, as a gameer i should be allowed quit a match if i am not having fun or its full of cheaters. Oh well, looks like i will get my online achievmeents from this game and then concentrate on firefight and co-op.
  • They need to be careful with the punishment, a lot of people have bad internet connection.
  • WOW. People it's if you quit 100 games every freaking day of the week. Having your connection drop every now and then, or quitting 1 or 2 games because of little kids WILL NOT GET YOU BANNED.
  • Habitual or not, this game is going to be insanely popular, and like other popular games (CoD and Gears) there will be a plague of people exploiting glitchs or finding ways to cheat, legit players will eventually be forced to quit more than 2 games a month lol, just to avoid those unsavory players.
  • Its not a ban, its a suspension they give you. And if you have bad connection Bungie are smart enough to know that when a person leaves when things are going their way, its most likely connection.
  • This is the gayest thing I've ever heard
  • So they're banning people for quitting? That's a bit much...
  • Hmm, just hope it doesn't affect me too much, since my shitty wireless connection is on and off all the time >:I Makes me wanna murder someone at the best of times. Never really had a problem with quitters, in fact i like more of a challenge now and then. Not gonna be so bad either since you'll get exp even if you lose for things you do, unlike Halo 3.
  • Quitting 100 games a day or 1 game a day, does not matter, its the right of every gamer to quit out of any match at any time for ANY reason, if bungie don't want people to quit then leave out the quit option and force players to reboot there console, punishing players is just moronic, how about they put more effort into punishing more serious things like cheaters than this rubbish.
  • This may be a problem for me due to some reason when someone uses the house phone my internet connection gets cut or if some rings up.
  • RAAAAD!
  • Does seem a bit harsh, as long as the multiplayer in ranked matches isn't as shit as in Halo 3s I doubt I will quit. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RANK UP ARG! Win three games in a row you don't get up in skill, lose one you go down a rank. Does anybody know whether custom games will be returning preferbably if Infection will be because thats all I really enjoyed doing on Halo.
  • Yeah they said they found a way to detect habitual quitters. They already have a way to detect disconnections. Hope they can also remove team killers aswell.
  • The 'telling the difference between lagging out and quitting' will fail, dashboarding counts as lagging out, and if they sort that, people will just disconnect the wireless router .. i dont quit anyway, but im gunna end up with quitters, AGAIN
  • @#62 - Ha ha. Right of a gamer? Jeez, you've been spoilt for too long. It's Bungie's right to do whatever the hell they want with their title. You know... because it's their title.
  • People please: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/habitually This only affects people who quit HABITUALLY!!!
  • @68 lol I love when webb makes fun of people :P OT This will be cool because kids who rage at every single death and every single loss (I've seen them out there) and quit because of it all the time will get temp banned :D I hate kids who can go 40-2 and rage about the two deaths.
  • I'm glad that it is for those who habitually quit and not for those of us who quit either because their parents want them to go with them or have connection problems. Every once in awhile my ISP gets a stick up their butts and I usually have connection problems with my service.
  • I always thought that if someone left a game they should be banned from joining another matchmaking game for ~5 minutes or so. Guild Wars PvP was win for that. Although my thought is if they can't leave, they'll just make the rest of their team hell, which I think they should get the same penalty if so.
  • I've lost faith in the common sense of most people because of this article...
  • That's bullshit. I don't feel like getting banned because I end up having to leave during game and all.
  • Thank you this was annoying in Halo 3. Might be playing reach longer then I planned to. I hope Epic see this and puts it in Gears 3!!
  • @#73 Don't worry the people here are in no way representative for the whole society. ;-)
  • how about instead of penalizing who habitually quit, whenever someone quits, ban them from matchmaking for like 5 or 10 minutes...problem solved...this whole "removing from the population" is complete bullshit
  • Leave it to Bungie to make some this some gay new rule. What if someone has to get off quickly? What if they have shitty ass teammates and don't feel like dealing with their shit anymore? Way to go Bungie..you fucking suck.
  • This was in the Reach beta as far as I know, all that happened was that you couldn't join a new match for 15 minutes. They might have made some changes or added new things though. It's not that bad.
  • Personally i think this is a relatively good idea (maybe abit extreme) - can be annoying when you join a rank match than half of your team etc vanishes - why bother joining if your going to leave. Seriously. @5 i dont think players will get banned - that is definately TOO EXTREME @75 Gears of War 2 has -1000 XP points when players leave a match during Ranked games (to stop ppl quiting) so this should return in Gears3 as it was a nice touch. Another reason why social match-making was made so players could come and go as they like.
  • @78, Quitting 1% of your daily games will not get you banned, it's probably going to be if you quit more than 75% of games played daily for a couple of days.
  • What if you ae needed to rush a family member to the hospital or someone accidently turned off the xbox? I think this is a little extreme.
  • Why is it so hard for some people to actually read the article before commenting? You only make yourself look stupid by doing that...
  • Quitting has never been a problem for me in Halo. If anything, I feel good if the other team quits; it boosts my self esteem =p. Besides, in halo 3 the player would lose EXP if he quit habitually, i think they should just keep that system.
  • webb you cant really justify penalizing leavers. What if your team is stupid and you're getting destroyed the whole match? that takes away the fun from you. and what is the teams are uneven because other people left? What if the other teams is using cheap tactics/glitching or something? That may be fun for you to play in but the rest of the world doesnt have fun in those games. And I bet alot of people dont even care about leavers in the first place.
  • What happens if you really have to go somewhere and you have to leave the game, so you have the chance of getting banned? sounds pretty ridiculous to me they should maybe take a little more xp then they did in halo 3 but i have no idea why they have went as far as banning quitters.
  • This is good news. I don't get angry when I lose, but quitters in any game irritate me. It's just more fun to win than to lose.
  • @82 READ!
  • A bit harsh but I dont see another way around it, I hardly ever quit, unless it is an absolute must or I lose connection, Unlucky for those people who constantly lose connection.. =/ -WcG iFredy29
  • #83 It doesn't say much about what people is worried of. I'm no quitter, but I wonder...how many "quits" will get you banned and for how long?
  • People actually play Halo,???? Gears FTW!
  • Good idea in principal, but considering a large portion of quitters usually quit because of the game failing to realise who is actually the best suited host in the first place, resulting in an awful connection, this system wont work. Luckily Halo hasnt been good online since Halo 1 & 2.
  • Everywhere! Everywhere on the internet, there are responses like these. Does nobody read! My days.
  • People need to get off Bungies nuts. This is a garbage idea. Being forced to stay in a game even though you don't want to or there is faggy cheaters is completely ridiculous. People have lives. Some matches can go on for hours and some matches are just bad and you get spawn camped and I myself can't sit there and wait for it to be over. The only people that like this are fat ass losers who have no lives and can sit in front of a tv all day so they don't have to worry about quitting. Bungie is making a huge mistake. Don't punish people with lives. Punish the faggy modders and cheaters.
  • @#85 - Ever played sports? You don't quit because you're losing. You man up and take it like a man.
  • I stopped playing Halo, this one time on last stand(I think that's what it's called) i would spawn and either get splattered by a warthog or shot in the face right out of spawn, i wouldn't even have time to jump before i was dead, that is why people quit bungie, because you can't make an online game at all.
  • that's stupid. what if your in the middle of a game and you have to come off the xbox or have a connection problem? if you do it a few times you get banned.. thats too far
  • A little extreme. Put a loss and a death on the records of quiters. Then they are punished but not victimized.
  • *shrugs* I'll quit whenever I damn feel like it.
  • @97: If you're getting disconnected from enough games to get banned, you should get a better internet connection.
  • its a bit tooo much dont you think? if im not having a great day with the game then ofcourse ill keep quiting until i get a good game going... but then again sick and tired of those fuckers on halo 3 that quit so that the could boost
  • Good, I hate quitters.
  • In case no one read this plus everything in the past, they will actually detect HOW you quit the game. Plus, you have to rage quit a lot to get penalized.
  • My only question is how much do they consider habitually? Cause if there's a game with somebody that does nothing but team kill, or lag so bad you can hardly move and you quit the game to find a new one. Will they ban you if this happens a few times over a weekend?
  • @104 Also, what if something more important than the game is happening, like a phone call or friends outside, and knowing you'll be gone for a while, you just switch off the xbox. Outright banning seems unfair, however maybe stopping you from playing for a day or so might be fine. After all, theres always other games. Still, a good solution, but perhaps a bit drastic as it may end up punishing people who are innocent.
  • haha take that fuckers. Now you can't quit even when you're losing like 30-2.
  • people are over reacting to this. someone said what if i have to choose between my freinds and halo. obviously ill choose to have a life well if your friends cant wait for you to finish a match then there pretty impatient. and people thining youll get banned ha. i think it will be more like. you cant play for 5 mins if you quit. or if you quit 50% of your matchs in a day you cant play for a day. or if you quit 75% of your total matchs you cant play for a week. AND imo this is GREAT. Quitters SUCK. they really do. especially in games like this where players are not replaced. (though not as bad as rts or 2 player games) and if you need to get someting out the oven as someone said earlier, whats wrong with leaving it on?
  • "One of the things that developers have really overlooked in recent years is truly punishing those who quit out of online multiplayer games and ruin the online experience for everyone else involved." Except EA Sports, they REWARD quitting in FIFA.
  • People don't read before they answer here. Lol @82, I guess you don't know the word "habitual".
  • I like that people are saying: "what if I quit because I'm on a bad team?" & "What if I quit because I'm/we're losing?", since they are more than likely the people we need to have a quiter ban for! And if you have something important to do, maybe you should think before starting a match? What is the point of starting something you know you will not be able to finish? And if it can't be helped; (as stated several times already) a random quit every now and again will not get you banned! Bungie arn't monsters! Also; I believe the unofficial way to avoid a ban because you have a bad connection is to get a better internet connection! ;P
  • "Oh NOES What if I have to quit to get my hot pockets out of the microwave?!?! I can haz ban?!?!?" Seriously, part of reading is "comprehension". If you have a thought, re-read the article, then post if you must. How some of you even manage to find the power button on an xbox amazes me.
  • as if lowering you rank wasnt enough!
  • @ 101 your a scrub dont quite every game till you find one with worse players then you!!!???? like damn they made customs and social for that stuff like WTF!!!..And poeple are using banned way to much; its a suspension like 58 said.its temp..and for those who decided to right " uhh bungie is fn gay blah blah wait to got on messing thing up" get real what are you doing reading this if your so strongly against bungie!!! dont play..makes our gaming better....@The Holy Bison wow imm with you seems like 3/4 of the poeple whome commented didint even read the post...or just cant read properly!!!..and F.Y.I. i love playing short handed i have sum of my best vids cuz theirs more of them to kill then us...happy reading Gamers!!Hanhhhh
  • Question: What if your connection fails? What if someone wont leave who is acting like an ass? what if i want to go play with my mates who sent me an invite at the start of the game?
  • @4 No the quitters are the ones who rage cause it's all about their "K/D" or their "Win/Loss" ratios. You can't say you never gotten pissed when people have quit in any game. Your whole team quits so it's you against 4 people, or the other way around so you have to spend 10 minutes looking for one guy. I personally welcome this. I just hope it has ways to tell when somebody quits or their Xbox froze or lost connection to live.
  • @114 Answer to your last question: Don't go into matchmaking when your waiting for your buddies. Or just finish your game and have them wait.
  • Great. So now when someone needs to leave because real life gets in the way of his gaming instead of leaving the game he'll keep his player there so he won't have to worry about getting penalized for quitting. So instead of playing the rest of the game down a man, the enemy team will have a free kill whenever they find the guy that had to leave. Wonderful. How about having a system like Call of Duty where people can join in the middle of a match to replace teammates that had to leave instead? That sounds a lot better to me.
  • Can we get some clarification on this? Is there a certain amount of times you can quit before it bans you? Are disconnects free from this? Why do this? Will this reset after a while and the slate wiped clean?
  • I'm on board, as long as habitual is loosely defined and they don't ban someone for quitting every now and again. Heaven knows I love quitting if the rest of my team has already quit out.
  • Everyone realizes that a shit ton of people who don't care about multiplayer are gonna start quiting just to get banned right? I know I used to do the opposite of what my parents told me was wrong. This is no different. People will do it to spite Bungie. And it will be hilarious.
  • This is just a stupid idea. I agree that people who leave should get punished but not by separating them. What if stuff comes up and people need to quit and eventually get "removed from the population" can they rejoin the others if they don't quit for some time? I can see what Bungie is trying to do but they should just stick with taking off xp or something. Bad idea
  • @111 I has a big piece of paper with the words "Tutch hear" taped on it. lol jk....... or am I????
  • great so my sh*ty connection that constantly kicks me from games may just get me banned
  • This seems stupid to me, theres nothing wrong with quitting every once in a while. We all do it.
  • @68 why build in a quit option then punish people for using it or abusing it, sure it can be annoying to have people quit constantly but to remove them from online? thats just too far, Gears 2 had a similar problem with people quitting and having uneven teams, ya know what they did? they added bots in to replace those players until more people joined, they didn't kick the people from there "population" for quitting, this will backfire on them.
  • Awesome. I'm lucky if I play a few games a day, and now when I have to go somewhere and quit out of the match I can look forward to coming back to a dumb penalty. Thanks Bungie, for punishing me for having other things to do as well.
  • OMG...Reach is out to become of the the best MP's ever...punishing quitters...that...is...AWESOME!
  • I hope it can tell the difference from that actually quit and other that get lagged out of the game. That would suck if I get penalized for something that is out of my control
  • Ha ha! You go, Bungie. I hate quitters. Except for people that quit when they have to got to work, or need to eat, or go to the bathroom. I kinda feel bad for them.
  • 120+ comments in and there's STILL some people that don't know the difference between occasional and habitual? It's not that difficult to understand. Quitting constantly = repercussions; quitting occasionally = no repercussions. Is it really that hard to get? And for those complaining about shitty connection drops, it kind of is what it is. I run on a wireless myself that will drop here and there but there's nothing I can do about it. Same with you. Bungie isn't going to accomodate us just because of our shitty internet connection. It's either deal with it or run a wired connection/get a better provider.
  • If I need to go for tea or something, this will make me feel nervous about quitting. Even if it's for people who do it all the time. I won't feel safe if I quit. I say, let them quit - but demote them by a rank and get rid of the xp they earned in that game. Then let other people join session, but they shouldn't get a victory bonus since they wouldn't have stayed in the whole game. Anyone agree???
  • The reason I think this is bullshit is because honestly I really dont care about any other gamers when I'm online. When I'm playing Halo or MW2 I don't treat it like a game of football I just play until I'm bored and if I'm bored in the middle of a match then I'll quit. I probably sound pretty arrogant but at the end of the day I've paid £40 plus XBL subscription fees to play it and I should really be allowed to do whatever the hell I want with it, as should everybody else who has paid for the game. And for those retards who are about to accuse me of being a rage quitter, have some sense and check my Bungie profile, it clearly shows I'm not and I doubt I'll be affected by any of this, I just don't like the idea of being penalised for crap like this.
  • This is dumb. There are legitimate reasons to quit out of games. I guess this means that if you have a shaky internet connection, you risk getting banned now. Most of the times when I quit, it's because other people on my team have already quit....who honestly wants to play 4-on-2 CTF? Most of the reasons why people quit would be resolved if Bungie just made better matchmaking in the first place. Banning people is not the right way to go about this problem.
  • @134 Here here
  • #131, well send, hope people read what you said mabye they will understand now.
  • @90: I don't think it matters how many times you quit overall; the use of the word "habitually" suggests that Bungie will penalize people for the frequency of thier quitting. So, if you don't quit very often, you should be fine.
  • Jeez. The way people are talking about not being able to leave games, you'd think Halo was turning into the Hotel California.
  • @138, don't be silly, it's more a jewish concentration camp.
  • @139 Lultacular!
  • How are they going to fix now me as a LvL 10 being paired with 30s and 40s?
  • Thank god. Far too many times I've been paired with good players who quit out when the opponents kick our collective asses. I've had enough of playing by myself in Team games.
  • That seems like a massive overreaction. If you pay for the game, you should be able to come and go as you please.
  • See I don't mind being people being punished for repeatedly leaving games, but also I don't want to be marked as some sort of criminal just because I may have to leave games more often than I'd like - it's like getting a criminal record when you haven't committed a crime. I mean, in reality the only people it's only likely to affect if they have it this way is the people who play to win. I can't see casual players being inherently bothered by it. But I guess Bungie have already made up their minds on the matter, so there's no real use getting all bitchy about it. I'll just try to leave as few games as possible.
  • Quitter suck so they deserve a ban, but I agree with LeGrimmReaper13 they need to adjust matchmacking so you don't play people well above your level.
  • This may be extreme, but whose to say that Bungie can't do this? I'm okay when a game punishes you for quiting (i.e. Call of Duty, Halo, Rainbow, Lost Planet, etc.) but when it starts to be annoying, that's when I complain.
  • Bungie has brought up the possibility of a crappy router or ISP constantly disconnecting internet... and have also said if that happens 4-7 times a day THEN DONT GO ONLINE AND GET IT WORKED OUT. :)
  • If they had a good system for custom matches(ie making them public with the ability to search for games and set search parameters) then there wouldn't be any need for people to quit out of ranked games.
  • That's bullshit. What happens if you disconnect?! Or just get annoyed with other people and decide to leave because the games shite anyway? Bah...
  • Well, that is complete and utter bullshit. I have perpetually crap connection strength, the effect being that I can't get through 3 games without being disconnected from at least one. Therefore, this would actually end up ruining the game for ME. That, sir, sucks.
  • there is a good side and a bad side to this. the good side is that we will see less quitters in the multiplayer games. the bad part is that i front time to time have to quit because i have to go to the doctor, to my grandma house, etc, this also applies to some about 25% of the quitters or around that percent of people that quit. hope bungie has taken this into account in there new quitter program thing. i still agree this is a good idea though.
  • wow if that's permaneant then that sucks. mabye the first ban is for a couple days, then a week, 2 weeks, month, and finally for good. would make sense to give people second chances.
  • What a load of crap. Fuck me its only a game, why take it all so seriously. And here was me thinking we live in a democracy. Fucking game nazis. What happens if you quit when you realise the game is just as shit and the same as all the other Halo games? Do you get your money back? I bet you dont.
  • Why is everyone bitching, if you leave once a month because of some random crap reason then you're not gonna get banned or anything. Bungie has also said that they have a way to determine if its a connection mishap, besides if your connection is that bad then maybe you shouldn't be playing online. Why should I play with lag and have constantly quitting teammates because of others bad connections?
  • You have to love how some people are complaining about this. The ones saying it's stupid or not right, or they hate it, are the ones who are quitting! This is supposed to teach people that, Hey, who cares what's going on in game, you don't just leave your team with fewer people, and make them suffer a loss. I think this is a great idea personally, and they should re-create Halo 3 and have the same systems put in to protecting Halo 3's severs from these kind of people. For once I'm happy with Bungie. Go Bungie!!
  • does it count as quiting if you lose connection?
  • #155 So, you're saying that because I have laggy connection, I shouldn't be playing online at ALL? I enjoy when I get to play properly, which is occasionally. I'm not going to stop playing online for fear of being banned from this game. I don't exactly love Halo, anyway. I wasn't sure whether of not I'd be getting this. I guess, now, that I wont be.
  • @#14 but is there a way that they would be able to tell if you disconted or left becuse i have poor cenction and get booted out alot not by choise do you think bungie will still baned me?
  • @#158 i agree
  • maybe people shouldn't suck at the game so much and make other people quit.
  • i agree with holy bison. i have lost faith in humanity that near 80% of the people that looked at this article could not interpret the "habitual" part of the banning process. HABITUAL HABITUAL HABITUAL maybe they will see it from my post. i like the idea for punishing those that skill rank, don't play or contribute, and quit because they are losing. last time i checked, i wasn't paying my bills with the money i won from winning at halo3, so why act like losing is taking food out of your mouth or such a big negative mark on your "service record." there will always, ALWAYS be someone out there better than you. deal.
  • I mean If you play up until the last Minute before you got to go to work a lot that's gonna mess you up, even if its not work I mean if you have to puck and go, something comes up then The Whole "Quitting" is gonna Burn you. Or What if Your connecting isn't super great those people are gonna get pummeled. I mean a better Strategy would be penalizing people who Quit out Because they don't want to lose. that's a different story all together. How many time have any of us been on a team that's losing and 2 douche bags quit out & another follows and there no way to turn that around at least with a full team of "losers" you CAN at least pull the win out of you asses and "miracle win" the match. That's a more realistic approach that should be taken, those are the ones who ruin the game, if you gotta go then go, but just leaving because you don't want a loss on your Bungie.com Profile is what should be punished.
  • Good idea taken waaaay too far. Hopefully they tweak this a little.
  • Hm a little hypocrtical on Bungie's part, we want the quitters not to have fun so everyone else can? that seems a bit redundant. Anywho Bungie is good with keeping shit real the MP is really competitive (look at the ranked playlist you lose a few matches you go down in rank) I'll try not to quit but if I'm getting killed a shit load I guess I'll quit once and then move to another game. Problem solved for everyone.
  • They need this in GOW so bad, but all pepole are gonna do is pull there network cable out. I say if your gonna quit dont play online or at least play a player match.
  • Its a good idea, but my internet can be crap at times and go through periods of disconnecting, which sucks.
  • This will just create other problems, people may just leave their controller behind and go somewhere else until the match is over. Thus having idle players
  • Maybe they should just make join in progress matches then this wouldnt be a problem
  • @95 Webb this is a videogame not real-life sports or a sports game. Live human beings would care if you quit. anonymous beings in an online game dont matter much except for a slight annoyance on their part for a few seconds.
  • Bungie already said this stuff in one of their weekly updates. But for all those who are complaining that they have bad connections (don't worry my connection only lasts a few hours) Bungie said they can tell the difference between a bad connection and quitting. Pardon my French but, I hope you stop bitching about it :P
  • So what happens to people who have connection issues? Bungie is fucked up for this it isn't fair. What if the other team is cheating? We have to sit and take it now?
  • i am all for this and it needs to be worked into other games aswell one of the main one is fifa cant belive you can get an achievement for quitting five ranked matches. 1 on 1 games is where it needs to be the most but i say well done to bungie for trying something new.
  • looks like we got a fair bit of quiters leaving comments. heres some tips dummies: 1) take a piss befor you play. 2) don't play if your cooking. 3) kids, if it's past your bed time then don't start another round. 4) if you realy must leave for a minute or two, just find a hiding spot and hope your not found. 5) if you usualy leave when getting your ass kicked (witch is the the case with most losers), don't play this game online. in fact, don't play any game online because ir just makes you look stupid.
  • Im glad they are going to punish quitters but it makes me worry we may see waves of betrayers coming as that could safely get you out of a game without quitting (unless they treat it the same way).
  • It appears that a lot of people here don't have any reading comprehension. Anyway: -"I don't want to put a game before my real life!" So, are you saying that other people should pay for your inability to manage your time properly? Unless it's an emergency, you shouldn't be playing games if you have other imminent obligations. -"I don't want to play with cheaters or bad players." You don't quit when the odds are against you in sports; there's no good reason to do it online. As for cheaters, the amount of matches you'll have against them are small.
  • @#170 - Oh, because they're anonymous and play online games, they're not real human-beings? The internet has taught you a very wrong lesson there =P
  • @ #177 . . . #177? Damn! What, you mean that I'm NOT the only actual human being playing video games online? Here I thought I was gaming against robots. What are you going to say next, Webb, that the sun doesn't revolve around me? Pishaw!
  • @#178 - Oh no, the sun definitely revolves around you, but I'm sorry to tell you that the things you play against online ARE actually human beings. Shocking! I know!!
  • Can people Join mid-game in Reach??
  • Maybe they should make their game joinable in the middle of matches, you know like every other modern shooter?
  • That's some bullshit, why not just have "join session in progress" game system thingy-mijigs...that way when someone quits, you get someone else to join the game....oh, but wait! That probably sounds too complicated, huh Bungie?! So, let's just ban people who constantly quit... Ah, well...I don't really like Halo, so I'll just grab my online achievements, and hope I don't get banned, then I'll never play online ever again...unless, y'know...there's dlc with new online achievements and/or if the online's good.
  • @ #13, and all the other little kids. If you have to go with your parents somewhere, then your not old enough to play. Problem Solved. Little brat kids make me sad, that includes everyone under 14 years of age = Spoiled and not mature enough to be playing Video Games. OH And Bungie FTW!!! Hopefully other developers will catch on to their genious.
  • lmfao webb i think your better off just making a seperate announcement on the word habitual :)
  • I wounder what would happen if you were having conection problems...
  • @183, for other developers to catch on, they would have to take a step back. Everyone else allows people to join, mid-match. And people will say that they match you with people of your skill level. But the times I have quit have been because Bungie's matchmaking has put me against a team of people that owned my team.
  • Sounds good..just hope its not like MW2...you leave a glitched lobby or a lobby with a bunch of hackers and glitchers and YOU get a loss. BS!
  • This is stupid. what if your internet connection drops out or you get a power surge?
  • I agree with #188 plus all others that expressed the same concerns. It's totally unfair on people sometimes these rules who have legit reasons for not being able to finish the game. Guess we should put in a system everytime they rip us off for content we get to rip off one of their limbs? Seems fair enough to me that is!
  • I completely agree with #187 i hate it when i have to do that
  • @#95 or to be formal, Webb....i applaud you....im sittin on 179 wins on fifa 10 and STILL don't have the 100 win achievement cause of quittin fucks that can't take the loss like a man.....either get good or don't play ranked....also well done bungie for implementin this....maybe i'll get to finish ranked games that my team is winnin for a change
  • this is great. i can't wait for this. i wish this happened more often in other games.
  • Bungie will take your money but then banned you cause they don't like the way you play it.
  • i think it will help quite a bit.
  • From the sounds of it, Bungie will look to implement systems that look at each case of quitting, not just keep a tally and ban you after X number of quits. Of all the devs lately, Bungie, has been the best with taking care of their online community so I don't think this system will be too drastic. Personally I am really excited to hear this, because even as a non-competitive player I find nothing more annoying than having a majority of players quit after a game starts. I can understand if a player has to leave once in awhile, but if a team is losing terribly and then all of a sudden most of those players have to "leave" is just crap and those people need to be punished. Bravo, Bungie, bravo.
  • bungie is one of the only smart game companies... they care about their community and what their community wants. all the fucking retards whining "if i get disconnected i get banned? thats so unfair!" no you wont.... you will get banned if you quit from almost every game you play! not just from quitting 1!
  • what if you are getting milked and cant do anything about it this means they need a time limit per match if its get the flag all i will do is if its a laggy/bad match with players who are milking me i will just put down my controller and walk away to watch TV till the match is over so now your going to have a bad online when players wont be moveing just sitting thare giveing the other team more points in halo 3 when they let you quit at least ur team did not have to deal with you sitting thare not moveing so your team will lose faster...........this is BUNGIES last halo game thank god so we wont have to deal with these stupid rules that will ruin the game no matter what........i have a feeling this is going to hit bungie hard when they ban over 2 millone players for quiting and they will end up getting in trobble.
  • also before the haters start going at me saying i ''QUIT'' alot i dont but unlike us most players quit at least 10 matchs perday once they find out that players are getting baned they will just sit in spawn and let the other team kill them and that means your team will lose alot faster from that think of it you quit then enemy team cant kill you or you sit in spawn not movieing for 15 mins or how long that match is dieing over and over and you team will lose 10X times faster.....i hope you can understand my point!
  • @183 i can understand the kid thing but look at what i posted this is what all those little annoying kids will do also thares players that are 18 that have to go to work or has to leave with thare girl friend somewhare so dont hate on those annoying little kids LOL
  • @177 So you actually care about some american teenagers feelings whose ganging up on you 8v3 in an online match? I certainly wouldnt. And notice how I said live human beings as in ones right in front of you. Not some 60-year old New-zealander for all you know. I believe you have sympathy Mr. Webb and thats great I guess... but perhaps you are too kind! +_+
  • Horseshit. You buy the game, it's your right to jump in and out of games as often as you want. I know I've jumped into the odd MP game, played for a few minutes, and jumped out cause I just wasn't feeling it, or I was in a game with a bunch of guys 10,000 levels higher than me, using all the cheap tricks in the book, taking the fun out of it. This is on the same level as Valve with L4D, changing and patching shit to play the game they way THEY want you to play, only more asinine. Granted, there are people who play, then dump out if they're on a losing team, to avoid a loss, but who cares? It's a game... a GAME! If you get somebody who does that in a game you're in, and you're offended by it, just neg rep them, and you'll never have to play with them again. It's your right, NOT the developers, to decide who you play with. I only agree with banning hackers/modders, and even them, just set up a hacker/modder server, so all the cheap jerks can play with each other. The video game industry is getting pretty uptight lately.
  • I hope Bungie will soon ban all the little screaming 10 year old fucks!! That would be great. then i would actually enjoy playing halo online
  • I must say this is a nifty thing to keep the competition in the multiplayer part of the game alive.
  • Really harsh, but I hate it when everyone on the other team just leaves, so this is great news, unless you constantly drop out of games.
  • @202 Party chat
  • Glad to see a company taking charge of issues in their Online Communities. *cough* "Modern Warfare 2!!!" *cough* Anyways, I like the idea they have but I think quiters should still lose some XP and not be able to join another match until the one they left is over.
  • I hate getting labeled a quitter because my internet cut out on me. The only Negative feedback I've gotten was from losing my connection. I wonder if they can can track connection issues or if my cheap internet cuts out, I'll be labeled a "Quitter". I have been one of those unlucky guys who has had people label him a quitter on his profile because of connection issues. I know what it is like getting bailed on and stuck in a match of two versus eight, So I'm not saying its a bad thing. I just don't want to be "removed from population" because my internet has its moments.
  • Holy crap, I am pretty sure that if this site banned people for posting without really reading an article, we would have about 100 people banned just on this one article! I mean can some people not read an article before they start posting? It seems that for every person that has pointed out that they are talking about people who quit on a regular basis, there are 5 people that post right after that complaining that they may have to quit out for some reason every now and then. It's not like your getting banned from xbl just because you quit one game to go to the bath room OT: I am so happy they are doing this. I have been so pissed off when people go into a ranked game and then just quit out at the start or just leave because they are losing usually because they suck at the game. And for those of you sitting their whining about that rage quitting isn't that bad, why not just grow a pair and take the loss.
  • Also, anyone know when the achievements will be added to x360a list in an organized fashion? Cause the way Bungie posted is kinda trashy looking. or maybe x360a just does too good of a job :)
  • But what if I need to get my hot pockets out of the microwave? T_T loool
  • a litte extreme
  • and this is why matchmaking is retarded. someone leaves a game, and no one else can join to take the spot. I wish matchmaking never became a part of gaming. some games do it right and keep games open, but they are very few.
  • This may be a good thing. Combined with the feature to customize your matchmaking options this might finally allow me to have fun in Halo. I quit playing 3 because there were so many competitive people playing unranked matches along with trash talkers and whiny little kids. Now the people who quit matches constantly will get penalized too. Becasue some days when you have people team killing and leaving your team you just have to suspect they may be friends with guys on the other team boosting them by sabotaging their friends opposing team.
  • This is bullcrap. What happens if I need to scratch my butt and I need to grab a butt scratcher upstairs. I'm leaving because I don't want to die and ruin my K/D ratio. I wish I knew whether or not I would get banned if I only quit sometimes...If only Webb made some type of comment like that... (end sarcasm) READ PEOPLE! Your eyes aren't just for counting gamerscore!!! But I definitely think Bungie should operationally define "habitually." I That's really the only thing that needs to be addressed. Lol, i'm just thinking of something similar to this. What if there was a law that you get arrested if you smoke weed "too much?" There would be cops all over arresting people for smoking weed and using their own definition of "too much." But I'm assuming Bungie will give all the necessary info. I wonder if developers will start sending viruses to Xbox's for doing things that "ruin the gaming experience for others." I'm tired.
  • Good! I dont play Halo, but i was intereseted in what Bungie have to say on quitters and what they are going to do about it. I play Fifa alot and hate when someone quits out at the final whistle, it is something that has bothered me for many years now and still continues to do so. Hopefully EA can follow suit.
  • YES!!! No more rank 50 with 0 XP drop-monkeys. Why are people not excited about this? It's for dealing with those who try to mess with the rankings system by keeping 0 XP using the -1 penalty for dropping out - usually in the last 30 seconds. Which can cause the game to stall for a minute or so while looking for new hosts for the other 7 - 15 people. Dropping the odd game is no biggie- we all need to do it sometimes.
  • Ok, solution, Bungie. You punish quitters? Fine. Sort your fucking matchmaking out so when you're a level 1-10, you don't get put in a game of level 40-50s. I think that's a fair deal. You want to stop people having bad experiences? Stop putting newbies in games with fucking veterans. Because getting your arse handed to you by a bunch of snipers who have their scopes on the spawn area every four seconds is NOT fun, and makes people quit. Jeez.
  • I seriously think people just read the headline then skim a couple sentences then comment...there should be a system where you can only comment if you spend at least ten seconds on the top of the page >_____
  • Lol, all these people saying "What if real life gets in the way"....if you're playing Halo online minutes before a real life event (school, work, going out with friends, etc), then you don't have a real life. Sorry, the truth hurts.
  • Really extreme i think.....What happens if someones internet disconnects and the person who quits is in no way responsible?
  • Halo's online sucks anyway. It's nearly impossible to beat two people on your own with an assualt rifle... It's just full of shield sponging. I'll stick to firefight, forge and campaign kthxbai.
  • Wow, the only thing I sincerly hope is that it also measures the difference with people who are forcably disconnected because my router does that to me :( I still am not getting it though, I've gone off solely multiplayer stuff and Borderlands is the best thing ever! :) Apart from Gears 2.
  • Webb, you should Bold and make word habitually maybe 2 fonts bigger, maybe then people would notice? but what about if you get booted? (my team mates just love to jump front of me when i throw granades)
  • if you quit from one match it doesn't matter it's if you do it on a regular basis
  • Liking the sound of this, as long as they make a good system that makes sure it's regular quitting rather than every now and then I'm totally in favour of this.
  • About time someone did something. There is one problem though, what if someone just has a terrible connection and keeps disconnecting?
  • considering that leavers sometimes really destroy your own experience in multiplayer, i think this is a welcome addition to halo.
  • Now if they could just get rid of boosters...
  • @2 just just like everyone did with EPIC's horde mode.
  • good job bungie, show those quitters whose boss!!!
  • Phoah 229 comments! I like what theyre doing theres nothing worse than being left in a game with 1 person on the other team. You just play hide and seek for the last 10 minutes of the game!
  • lets all hope to god gears of war 3 dont have something like this or we are all in trobble at least games that bungie makes are not lag fests!
  • If you guys are afraid of your internet cutting out mid-game, then maybe it's time to dial up your ISP and give yourself a nice connection upgrade. It'll benefit everyone in the end. If you're afraid of quitting for a Doctor's appointment or something, don't start up an Invasion match that you know will last a solid 10 minutes or more. If you quit once or twice in a week, don't get your undies in a bunch. If you quit 10-15 times a day, expect a well earned visit to banville. Heed my wisdom!
  • @ # 223 Throw less random grenades. ;)
  • Have Bungie ever thought that most peope quit because Halo is such a lame, unoriginal dull as fuck game. Just wondered!
  • If your connection cuts out habitually, I'd say it's time to get a new ISP, because that is the problem rather than the game. As for having to leave because of a social event, don't start a game 5 minutes before you are due to leave. Having to take a dump, or answer the phone and quitting once every other day is not going to affect you people. Hopefully this becomes the norm in all games in the future, especially one-on one sport games and fighting games.
  • @18, if i was getting beat that bad it would only encourage me to brave it on and try to win. You will always find someone better than you! It's challenges like that, that personally keep me wanting to play games such as halo. If i was the best and won every game i played it would quickly become very boring and i would move on to another game. OT: I'm glad they are doing this i hate playing games where all my team quit and I'm left all alone and getting my *** kicked because i refuse to quit and get penalized!
  • @80: Its 1500 and that's not enough you can easily make that back, plus ranks in Gears2 are nothing now with all the exp bonuses that were available, I want straight bans for a couple days. Not just host bans like people get when they quit as host. I want 3-5 day bans for quitting out a certain amount a games within a certain amount of time in Gears 3. Its getting ridiculous in that game but that's besides the point Bungie is doing the smart this here and others should follow.
  • It's about time halo implemented a method like this. It's a pity it may be too late for this particular method to be accepted by the masses now that a lot of games such as call of duty have used a different approach by simply making the games joinable if a player quits. Even gears are testing this method with their social playlists. For the die hard halo fans however it will be welcomed with open arms no doubt.
  • My motto on live for a long time has been "Ban Quitters". It wouldn't be so bad if they were replaced with bots like on Gears. If I get owned, I get owned! I won't drop out! My only problem with this is the obvious amount of people that just create new tags to get the 30 day free trial. So I'd say a console ban rather than just a tag ban!
  • @5, and a lot of other people. No, they're not banning you, they never said that.
  • Whilst its good to see them crack down on quitters, I would like to see them replace those who quit in games.
  • I think its fair to penalize the people who actually quit. But for ppl like me who live in the middle of nowhere sometimes lag out of a game or lose connection completely. I HOPE Bungie has enough skills to figure out if a person actually quits or lags out. Also @217 Bungie has improved the match making, so u should pair up with ppl of your own choice, like skill, lvl, and style of play.
  • This is good news... but hopefully Halo wont force you into game types and variants anymore... I also wish that there was a gametype where, if you stayed in the same spot for a certain amount of time (campin like a fag) that the next time a grenade was thrown you would warp on top of it:-)
  • @#209 - I'm going to do it later. Adding the achievements isn't an easy copy and paste though, so it will take me a while =P
  • Wow who cares? It's a game, have fun while you have it and get a life. you get banned, it's not the end of the world and you most likely deserve it. I suck at multi-player (just about any multi-player) but if i'm in a game I stay. It's just a game!!
  • I quit every once in a while to go help out arund the house, but I am not a Frequent quiter. I hope they don't punish me!
  • First off, I agree with everyone saying that the word "habitually" needs to be put in bold. Anyway, I hope Bungie defines what habitually is. Plus, can someone please assure me this won't lead to what I said in my other comment? When in a situation where someone would normally quit they might instead just leave their player there, afraid of having one too many quits, giving the enemy team a free kill. (Which is especially bad if you're playing Team Slayer) I'd rather my teammate quit instead of leaving a free kill for whoever finds his body. Wouldn't it be better to have a system like Call of Duty where you can join in the middle of a match to replace those who had quit earlier? Or like Gears and replace missing people with bots?
  • Its MY choice if I quit or not. I pay for a f#+kin game, so I want to deside what I do or what not. imo totally fail by Bungie.
  • @248 I agree, bot's could be a bit tricky in the much more vertical world of Halo, but if this is what you get for quitting, people will probably just leave it going. Anyhow, their will be some way around it no doubt, like Gears - pulling out ethernet/wireless, or just dashboarding like in CoD.
  • @249 Ultimately the game is made by Bungie so it's their choice on how to do things in their game. But as the consumer we can decide if we want to buy their product or not. So if quitting in the middle of a match is such a big deal for you, then you can pass on buying this product and take your business to a game that doesn't ban you for habitual quitting.
  • WTF a match is about 10 min!can't you wait to finish????and if you're losing means that some minutes have passed!like on SSF4 they quit and send u a message like "fuck u ahahah"...fuck u quitters and fuck u campers!online gaming is not this!great idea bungie!!!
  • @219, some people have small children, and shit happens so you have to jump off. Anyways, as it has been stated, open up your matchmaking, you know like everyother shooter has done, and maybe this won't be an issue.
  • About time
  • Bungie should focus more matchmaking and less on this. I don't care about the preferences Bungie has added to help matchmaking, in the beta it didn't seem to make a difference. In the end, some will only play the campaign, and truly I hope it doesn't fall flat (again) and is compelling to play from beginning to end. Multiplayer = fuck all
  • sounds good but will end up failing
  • @5 fail
  • I guess that would be good. If this Halo was like CoD then quiters wouldn't be a big deal (I'M NOT BEING A FANBOY) since other people can join matches. I don't quit Halo games anymore anyway. It just sucks for when you have to go somewhere and have to leave the match early
  • Once I get done with my online achievements I'm done with matchmaking anyways, so I don't care.
  • i welcome this, im sick of people quitting on ODST. when they dont get the map they want or not playing as a team. On FFA you should be able to quit when ever you want. because it's only you your hurting.
  • This is a really good idea 'bout time quitters get penalized.
  • Not being able to quit is a reality based thing if you ask me! You can't press pause or off or something against afghans and you couldn't do it against germans... Why should you be able to do it games if you want all games to feel so f***ing realistic? Does leaving make it realistic? I have never left a game with no good reason and kudos to webb for never leaving at all!
  • stupid idea. being in AUS if we get into a euro game we will be lucky for the screen to load let alnoe walk, we should be aloud to leave.
  • I'm all for it. Those who want to be able to quit when getting your butts kicked or playing against jerks... YOU'RE the ones ruining the online experience they're trying to block! Good riddance. The only issue if for those with bad connections who either habitually disconnect, or for those times when you join a game where the lag makes it unplayable. I'm hoping the "tools to detect habitual disconnects" takes into account the latency of your connection, which should cut down on the majority of these problems.
  • Though it's fun when you're undermanned and you still win, though too often you just lose. Though I think a simple join session in progress would work better, unless the way the servers are set up cause that to lag.
  • I like the idea becuase there are so many people that quit and do ruin the gaming experience that only few can actually understand unlike those that just rage quit a game when things aren't going there way. I like the idea but the only thing I don't like about Halo is the fact that you only get 1xp per match victory. I hope that in Reach they have a little bit more of a way to make your level go up quicker. I like the idea that they do penalize those that quit becuase I can't describe how many times I have been left as the only person on the team and ending up coming out on top from some stroke of a combination of swords and battle rifles. I don't think they will immediately ban you from online, it may just be a simple statistic that prohibits you from quitting to many times.
  • Idea for people making multiplayer achievements: Stop forcing people to earn them in "Ranked" matches with random people. You'll probably see less rage quitting as those people who are only interested in achievements boost them in some private match and then move onto another game. Leaving just the people who really want to play online.
  • About freaking time. They need to get banned. I allow this and I approve this message. :D
  • The only people Bungie can blame for people quitting early from games is THEMSELVES. Perhaps if Halo wasn't so retarded as to reward people experience ONLY FOR WINNING, then perhaps there would be less quitting.
  • Bungie is taking this to an extreme. They should penalize people; but eventually banning them from halo reach multiplayer?! Come on. That would just slowly but surely get everyone kicked out. Everyone quits, not because they're scared that they'll lose (although some do) but for other things like... explosive diarrhea, making a sandwich, killing your neighbors cat. It's just not fair. Bungie should take this into more consideration.
  • What about people who have a crappy net connection, or there is a storm that messes the net up? What then. You gonna penalize innocent people too. FU Bungie!!!
  • people who keep sayin stuff like "I paid for it i should be able to do what i want with it" are damn stupid. most people when they pay for something want to get enjoyment out of it. enjoyment is not being stuck on a team with a bunch of douches who cant take a beating for a whopping 15 minutes or so and so quit out... also people are massively over reacting to this it is probably one of the best ideas i've heard in a long while, it ISN'T a PERMENANT ban... I say punish the quitters. also some people are saying ridiculous things like if you dont quit when your losing or having a tough game you obviously have no life because you have the time to stick out a loss, heres looking at you #94 (honestly have a look its more or less what he wrote) just because you cant organise your free time properly doesnt mean other people havent got a life. Also people saying what if someone is cheating?!? when was the last time anyone played a game of halo where someone was glitching or cheating? they have like the best system for getting rid of people who cheat. this isnt modern warfare 2! basically read the article and stop over reacting it makes you look thick.
  • I'd say i have apretty good idea for the punishment. I'm not sure what they will use, but this would work: (If the recorded leaves reset every day at midnight, this would work) 1 Quit: unable to join a game until current one finishes. 2 Quits: 30 minute suspension. 3 quits: 120 minue supsension. 4 quits: 1 Day suspension. You get the idea by now probably. To further prevent it, make the day suspensions go on permanent record, and have those stack up also.
  • Right, this whole subject has wound me up sooooooooo much, I've decieded to create an account on this site just to post. This is the worst thing I have ever heard any game publisher do!!! Do Bungie assume that everyone plays the game for 24 hours straight? Do they not think that people may have to quit a game to go for tea, go to work, catch a bus, have a poor connection or they may just be fed up of an awful game where the other team may be made up of better players because of an inbalanced matchmaing system. Yes, everyone is guilty of quiting the odd game, but if it is true that quiting a few consecutive games results in a ban (wether it be temporary or permament)this would be a SHOCKING MOVE. Not everyone should be FORCED to finish a game. What Bungie are prosing is awful. People who aren't very good at the game or are just fed up of an excretement game with poor matchmaking and poor levelling up are obviously going to quit. Do you honestly think that people are going to buy into this idea an indeed the game if you are banned for quiting a few games. I think not. Other games are pretty succesful at stopping players to quit. Gears of War makes you lose a lrage amount of xp. Fifa and COD give you a loss so your ratio goes down. Even so it is your choice to quit at the end of the day. Bungie are bullying people by proposing this. Can Bungie please stop trying to appeal to the hardcore stereotypical players who sit at home all day stuffing their faces and who are 'pro' and actually make the game appeal to new players. After all if it wants sales that is what it has to do. Oh and while I think about it could bungie please try to sort out bigger problems it faces bringing out this game such as boositng and me having to listen to 10 year old Americans calling me a 'noob'. Bungie get your priorities right! I WILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY I AM NOT BUYING THIS GAME IF WE CAN'T PLAY BECAUSE WE QUIT THE OCCASIONAL GAME! Who is with me?????
  • This is how it starts, with the ban hammer. Skynet is next.
  • Gotta laugh at the people saying, just get better connections for the people who disconnect. My internet is pretty slow, 1.5 mb I believe, but guess what, in my little town this is all that's available.
  • I like this idea but as several other people have said, my connection is "JUNK" and has a massive habit of disconnecting me or freezing during matches and making me have to restart my system. If this issue causes Bungie to have me on their "non-preferred players list" then I will be truly disappointed since I've been looking towards getting this game for such a long time.
  • What about when I have **** teammates?
  • EXCELLENT people are gonna be forced to man up, about time applause for Bungie is in order. If only EA would take this in.
  • @274 I clapped at my computer desk after reading your comment. :)
  • cracking idea - i never really got into the halo games but here's hoping more companies start doing this, quitters ruin online multiplayer games.
  • @280 wtf are you talking about EA is trying to make you pay when you play online when you buy thare games used and shut down thare servers to games that are 1 year old are you stupid if EA doe's this its just 1 more thing that will make playing thare games harder..........i was reading and non of you guys said EPIC needs to do this lol i think you dont wana be stuck inside of a laggy match eh?
  • as long as they can tell the difference between actually quitting and a lost connection i'm ok with it. Would be stupid to be penalized because my connection was lost and I wasn't actually quitting.
  • okay how many times is it considered habitual? five times a day? what happens when your online and keep getting booted by net because of crappy speed that it happens to make you habitual for that day? how many days will it count it that it would say its time for you to get banned from online? hmm what would happen if someone hacked someone else's account and just started quiting out to get them banned or some 'friend' starts screwing with someone elses' account while they testing out their new game and does it. and as far as team killing quick way to solve that. turn friendly fire off. never understood why halo had it that you could shot and kill your team mates in a game. understand the ability to get hit with bullets and all but hell come on. friendly fire option should be involved somewhere.
  • people dont get this BUNGIE have ways to detect weather you quit due to a lag-out, power-surge, or just plain bad luck. if you still dont get it listen to someone read it to you THEN you might get it. if real life gets in the way of playing then it's (more then likely) an isolated incident. If a friend comes over and you're in the middle of a game they might understand that you want to finish the game before you do anything. if your parents want you to come NOW, again thats an isolated incident if your internet shits itself then bungie will go " his internet cut out no ban for him ". if you have to go to work it's your stupid fault for being online so close to you having to leave. if you have to go to school then you're more then likely too young to be even playing a game like halo. to all the people that say that matchmaking should be fixed up. IT IS they have gotten rid of the True Skill ranking all together it's just experience so you can be a complete rook and play with rooks or a seasoned veteran with a 5star general ranking under your belt it won't matter in matchmaking it's all a level playing field. it's about time they did stuff like this i'm SICK of coming across de-rankers and level 50 apprentices that quit out 30 seconds before the game ends and boosters that are lvl 50 and have a lvl 10 in their party. and once more with feeling... the people that say they can only get crappy laagy games halo favours local games so if all you can come across game wise is 100ms ping then wait untill the end of the day when all the people that were at work get home and start playing then you will have good 50ms ping.
  • I have to question the brain of some people! Read the damn Article @all those people saying "what if i "have to go quickly", or "lag out" or have a "blackout". Bungie can check what happened and it's only for those who do it ALL THE TIME! This includes u #274 and @284. U guys are just plain "thick"! They aleady -xp's off u for quitting aswell ...lol Oh and the Matchmaking is fixed to help stop unbalanced games u idiots. I'm pretty ordinary at Halo online but i never quit because of how my team is going. Again @ 274 and 281.... "thick"!
  • @274 and all the rest of the whiners saying stuff like "what if I need to use the loo etc etc". If you need the loo/tea/to go to work etc DONT START THE FRICKEN GAME!!!!!!!!!!!! Simple. You should only start a game if you can and will finish it. If not, dont bother. Personally I think this should sort out a problem in all online games. Too many pussy's that start a game, begin to lose then quit out.
  • If you can't anticipate taking a leak well enough to do them between games, you probably have a medical problem and should see a doctor right away. I'm glad they're doing this, it shows that they're finally willing to step up to where other games have been for some time. Especially PC games.
  • i often think....hmmm i haven't played halo for a while i'll jump on and have a quick game of team slayer, only to get whipped by some jumpy 12 year olds and promptly quit in frustration... maybe this will make me think twice about doing such a thing
  • @274 and 281! I absolutley agree! I think they should have a 'Serious' and 'casual' lobby. Serious implementing the no quitting rules and casual just for the laid back player who (believe it or no) is actually playing the GAME to have FUN
  • Wow, loadsa posts on this one. Quitters piss me off, sorry "habitual quitters" piss me off. Understandable when your connection fails, or an emergency comes up. But for those who get stroppy, throw a hissy fit and quit out of a game, or multiple games, HAHA! Gutted!
  • got bored reading the comments that were asking the same things and people not reading other comments which would've answered their questions, so i skipped through for webb's comments. you, sir, are a funny bugger!
  • @#291, good idea. Not everyone wants to play Halo to play 'hardcore 24 hours straight' I and other players want to play it for FUN, and what Bungie and proposing isn't. @274 :)
  • @#281 :)
  • Ok, I play games to have fun. If i fall into a game that has people glitching out maps or just a shit game type, I don't wana waste my time being bored.
  • @#169 Exactly! I was playing the double EXP weekend game on sunday and my mate just quit, so I had no chance to win that match (I didn't quit, though), and I thought "Damn, why don't they make joining in started matches possible?"
  • For and against this. IT's going to be abused or misused. I'm in the match generally to finish it - win/lose. However, there's a huge line between Sore Losers and Fair Players. I'm sure it won't happen like 5 matches in a row and I'll fight to the end of the match but if it's full of glitchers/laggers/etc - people ruining the game - I'd rather quit and take my penalty than to let a bunch of prepubecants overthrow a match to their advantage. @ 10 - Hence they used the word "Habitually"
  • Wow how did so many of you misinterpret what bungie was saying? If you quit every every other match because you don't want to lose, you will get banned. You will not get banned for a few quits/disconnects here and there. Did you really think they would ban EVERY person who had one connection problem?
  • Great, so now if you want to quit out just unplug your ethernet, simple solution. They'll think you lost connection. Although, I wish BC2 would do something about quitters, I've been in too many rush games against one or no enemies.
  • Sure is full of children in here... You can really see where Halo's fanbase is. 90% of the people who replied need to learn to read, and then they need to comprehend what the just read.
  • All I can say is that if this actually prevents quitters online, I'm willing to jump back into the Halo franchise.
  • Well, it seems I will never be able to play Reach seeing as I disconnect from faulty phone lines that I don't have money to fix. and if I do bother playing and it disconnects one too many times I'll be banned.
  • Bungie should just keep the same system from Halo 3 but the more you quit the more EXP that will subtract
  • Wow, over 300 posts to this. People take gaming way to seriously! I can see points for and against this. If this is the direction online gaming is heading what is next?! What if I have a bad time in a game where no one quits, will Bungie send me a nice message on live to make me feel better about myself and tell me I am cool, ha! How long does one game take, 10 minutes? Big deal if someone quits, suck it up and move on to the next game! And to all the people who "need" to quit to go to the bathroom or make food- Learn to control your bladder and hold it until between matches, and don't start another match when your food is about to be finished!! Epic fail!
  • Sounds like a great idea to me, just wish other publishers cared as much as Bungie seems to. Most likely it will be a experience penalty so it probably won't matter to most people.
  • If only soul calibur 4 producers thought of this that game online brings back horrible memories, such as losing to a level 1000 guy 5 times but when im finaly going to win a match he disconects, it counts as my loss, i get 0 xp, and he gets away scott free.
  • Really?! What if Bungie keeps putting u in games with people way higher levels than you. Why is quitting such a big deal. The current system for most games is fine. They are acting like it is some big deal. Why force people to play in a game when they don't want to be in there if they discover they are outmatched in skill. Or people hack the game and use all these cheats like in MW 2 were some people got infinite kill streaks. Disco Stu 91 some people have medical problems and can't control certain body functions. Why does one person quit make everyone else have a bad time? Explain that to me. No big deal. Also if u quit when game it can keep putting you back in the same game. That happened to me once in MW 2 ( same game with campers and glitchers and cheaters). Come on Halo. Also for the people saying suck it up, not everybody can play 24/7. So what happens to the Halo player that is not a hardcore gamer that plays people that are hardcore halo players? He will quit to find a better match. Quitting is not that big of a deal. Bungie is borderline putting quitters in that same section as cheaters. That is not fair at all. I think the suggestion lobby for casuals and one for hardcore people that mods that rules for quitting is a good idea. That way is places everyone in the perfect spot.
  • This is stupid, I have played about 400 games on halo 3. I have quit about 10 games and every match im in i see no-one quit or 1 person every 20 games or something. WHERE ARE ALL THESE QUITTERS? No-one quits because you have to win a match to get that 1 xp back. Banning someone with bad connection is stupid aswell. Mine is terrible, i once disconnected from the internet 5 times in an hour and i would probably get banned for that on halo. I might buy black ops instead of this tbh.
  • what so do you get banned permanently or for like a week
  • Perhaps Bungie should introduce some match bonus instead to encourage players not to quit? It works in COD...
  • @309, i think they can detect these things, it's only when you really quit out of a game
  • @259 Agreed, Im usually in it for the ONline achievements, and for the Forge.
  • @tobym94 It doesn't always work in COD, however I think I read somewhere (or heard off a friend) that there were planning on introducing an XP system that was something like COD. However, take this with a grain of salt
