Race Driver: GRID

Codemasters Working on Race Driver: GRID and Op Flash: Dragon Rising Sequels
Written Monday, July 26, 2010 By Richard Walker

Talking to Develop Online about Codemasters' current stable of upcoming games, Senior VP of Production, Jamie MacDonald has confirmed that its Southam-based studio is hard at work on follow-ups to both Race Driver: GRID and Operation Flashpoint, as well as DiRT 3.

"We’ve got a major launch with F1 coming up in September and developed at our Birmingham studio, and we hope to draw new IP from there. Our Guildford studio is working hard on Bodycount, and we will be looking to to take that franchise further and further with the addition of more IP," says MacDonald.

"In Southam it’s full steam ahead with the next iteration in our Flashpoint series, as well as the next DiRT and GRID. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out."

Colour us completely unsurprised of course, but it's still good to know that we'll be seeing more from the GRID and Op Flash franchises in the near future. Both will also likely utilise Codies' proprietary EGO 2.0, which VP of studios Gavin Cheshire says is "very powerful" and "in an intricate stage right now."

"The next F1 will show where EGO has got to at this stage. I think people will agree that it has probably got the best weather of any game ever seen," states Cheshire.

"We are focused on EGO 2.0 at the moment, which will be coming in with a massive title that we can’t talk about just yet. That will really keep us cutting-edge."

Massive title, you say? Intriguing...

I really enjoyed all 3. Grid and Dirt2 were very good arcade racers and I personally think that Flashpoint was severely underated by most. I'll be looking forward to those releases and am definitely interested to find out what the 'massive title' will be.

I personally class GRID as possibly my favourite racing game of all time. I've never spent as much time on a racing game as I did on GRID, is such a fun game to play so I'm looking forward to this.

More Grid and Dirt? Sounds awesome! As long as Dirt 3 has more rally racing than Dirt 2 did. And hopefully Grid 2 gets more cars.

Wasn't sure about DiRT 2. Codies have to be careful to make sure that 'GRID 2' isn't the same as GRID. I have to admit Codemasters are great at racing games but they might be a bit old now and they seem to be repeating there selves. Well, at least Codies always make good achievement lists.

Definitely can't wait for more Operation Flashpoint... that beats COD for me by a mile. Shame Dragon Rising didn't have more DLC, would have been nice to have had a bit more added on to the campaign.

I'm not sure if I want to pick up GRID 2 while 'Gotta Drive 'em All' in the original is still broken.

Time to send off a few more e-mails...

I'm 90% sure i read recently that they were working on a Race driver game that harked back to the really good racing games they produced.
thinking of Toca touring cars, and Toca race driver.
Grid seemed to stray away from what i felt was great about these titles.
there seemed to be too much concentration on the drift mode and not enough of the "race" side of the game.
I want to go back to the days where there were a whole bunch of licensed racing organizations.
Codemasters own or have access to the Mc.Rae,V8 supercars and Formula 1 licenses now.
And the BTCC,DTM,LeMans and other companies rights aren't owned by anyone that i know of.
The doors open for a racing game that combined a lot of the popular motor sports into one (hopefully) kick ass game.
I guess we'll see.

Operation flashpoint needs a lot of work when comparing to the PC version.
It still felt very unnatural.
And the natural support of the PC community if obviously lacking on the Console platforms.

And for the love of god.
Console owners WANT THE MISSION EDITOR!!!

let us make our own missions and choose what we want to do.
Make it simple (look at the old OFP and ARMA)

Also Codies, You need to support the game with DLC and addons packs.
If OFP:DR was supported with packs adding a modern day setting at a reasonable price how well would it have sold?

Adding more stuff via booster packs and DLC.
Keeps the game fresh and players interested.
New maps and packs work for every game.
Allow players to do what they want and (with mission editor) make new missions for online(a bit like Farcry 2 map editor).

In a war game you have a massive span of time to add bits which would make the game almost completely new,Adding new eras and maps ect.
add the modern war (Iraq,Afghanistan) add historic wars (American civil war,WW1,WW2,Korean,Vietnam,First gulf war)

Even just a booster DLC of countries and missions or campaigns (Russian,British,Insurgent and so on)

There is so much more you could do with this game,
I don't understand why they don't do it.

Anyways rant over,Sorry about the ,Massive wedge of text.
No one will read by hell these are two games i love and have played each one on release for years.
And to see them going wayward is something i would hate :D

Flashpoint was a little off, but had good potential. Hell, if they got rid of the voice actor who made me want to die I'd be happy.

Grid was fantastic, I look forward to Grid sequel, especially if it has weather in it.

F1 game might be good. I'm eager to play a demo.

If the new Flashpoint plays like the last one I'll pass. That was the most horribly glitched game I've ever played. Sad though, it had good potential. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES CODEMASTERS!

Console kids can enjoy Flashpoint, whilst the mother of all Sims, ArmA 2, stays on the PC.

Codemasters let me down with OpFlash DR and I've got no faith in them - specially after they promised monthly support for the game, then ditched it not even 6 months into it's lifecycle.

Wow, another Operation Flashpoint? Game I really wanted to love but just couldn't... It was so glitched I'm surprised it was ver released in such a state and then NEVER EVEN PATCHED!!!

Shooting a guy with over 4 clips (100% accuracy) and he still lives and also doesn't know where I am. Getting shot through walls, headshotted by militia from 500+ yards and an entire base knowing my exact location after stealth killing a lone sentry. Crap. No more please...

@19 OFP:DR was in a Modern setting....

Dirt is sick so cool, never bought it but the demo rocked. And OFP:DR has to be one of my favorite shooters of all time. I had no real issues with it but somethings they could work on is the fact that multiplayer was really one-sided with the American troops having IR scopes and the Chinese having Iron Sights. China is not that shit of a country. Plus I knew alot of people who were pissed that you couldn't customize your weapons. Other than that the game was amazing. By far better the MW2.

Flashpoint was a massive lie. CM promised us DLC every month, some of it was supposed to be free. We ended up only getting 2 DLCs, and they certainly weren't free. Last game from CM I'll ever buy.

I'd rather they brought the ToCA series back to life. Race Driver 3 was awesome. The graphics sucked, but there were lots of great tracks, great handling, and many disciplines including rally, oval, off-road and trucks.

Variety is what Forza is missing.

As for flashpoint that let me down big time. So theres very little chance the next one will interest me.
