Red Faction Breaks Into Television With 'Origins'

THQ and "imagination-based entertainment" channel SyFy have today announced that they're joining forces to create a two-hour live-action movie pilot for Red Faction: Origins, scheduled to air on SyFy in March 2011.

Telling the story of the Mason family, Origins is set 25 years after the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla - which saw Alec Mason reluctantly joining the Mars resistance - leading up to the forthcoming sequel Red Faction: Armageddon, which is also due for a March 2011 launch.

Red Faction: Origins has been written by noted scribe and producer Andrew Kreisberg, who has previously worked on Warehouse 13, Fringe, Vampire Diaries and Boston Legal, and is based upon a story developed by THQ Director of Fiction Development, Paul DeMeo (The Rocketeer, Flash, Viper, The Sentinel).

Remember how THQ said that they were going to use more of this kind of transmedia stuff to promote its games? Well, this is considered a big one as THQ's VP of Core Games, Danny Bilson states, "THQ is blazing a new trail in the gaming industry with our partnership with SyFy by introducing the Red Faction franchise to a new and broader audience," he said. "This unique transmedia collaboration is one of many strategic initiatives in place to dramatically increase awareness for Red Faction: Armageddon and extend the Red Faction brand across a wide variety of entertainment channels."

Red Faction: Origins focuses on Jake Mason, Alec's last surviving son and ranger in the Red Faction Militia, who is out for vengeance upon the enemies that kidnapped his daughter, Lyra and murdered his wife ten years ago. However, upon facing his enemies, Jake discovers that one of them is a person close to him, who has become a dead-eyed soldier hell-bent on crushing the Red Faction at the behest of a madman.

There are currently no details on cast, but expect to hear more on the project as it heads towards its March 2011 airing on SyFy alongside the release of Red Faction: Armageddon.

Syfy have some good shows, I love red faction... could be onto a winner. Maybe because it's on TV it will avoid the game-to-film curse.

A spoiler tag would of been nice on the whole sister plot line. Ruined what might of been a good twist lol.

Still, will be good.

SyFy TV shows are uber low budget and usually are accompanied by shitty screenwriters; they would have to spill a lot of money into this to make it badass, but they wont...

@7 So I guess Battlestar, Eureka and all the Stargate's had "uber low budgets" and "shitty screenwriters"
