2010 Summer of Arcade Dated and Priced

128
Alan Pettit

We already knew the lineup, but Microsoft have now announced the specific batting order and cost for each game in this year's Summer of Arcade. Sadly, my little tagline was not much of a joke. This will be one expensive summer if you were planning on banking all of these games, as each title will drop at 1200MSP.

  • July 21 - Limbo
  • July 28 - Hydro Thunder Hurricane
  • August 4 - Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
  • August 11 - Monday Night Combat
  • August 18 - Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Better get mowing those lawns and delivering those papers, kids... you're gonna need all the extra cash you can muster. However, as an incentive, if you purchase all five games, you'll receive a 1200MSP refund (essentially making it a "buy four, get one free" offer); additionally, purchasing three of them will get you a 400MSP refund.

  • I was hoping to see games cheap for summer
  • I don't know what most of these games are so except for Lara Croft all I'm downloading is demos
  • All sound/look shit, I'll save my points for other things
  • I'm just waiting for cheap dlc, currently waiting for cod waw maps to go on sale, gears to all front went from 1600msp to 800msp , I know cod waw is 2000
  • Everybody get Monday Night Combat or I'll kill you.
  • Limbo is defintly the one i want Go Denmark! :3
  • 1200 MP x 5 = :(
  • Oh god........Limbo. I will be sorely dissapointed, if it doesn't live up to my expectations. It just looks so.....BEAUTIFUL!!!
  • Fuck 1200. I'll wait till some of these hit deal of the week.
  • Really Microsoft? Really?
  • Monday Night Combat may get bought for 1200MSP...the rest are DotW at best
  • Probably check out a few demos but will most likely wait for them to be the DotW
  • I prefer Retail anyway:) I will play an arcade every now and then but retails remain better imo.
  • well quess what im broke soo there you go microsoft i anit buying nothing now
  • Want Castlevania HD, Limbo and Monday Night Combat. Shame I have no money at all.
  • Limbo is first! Can't wait!
  • Interesting games but steep prices. I will skip on them all until they go in DotW someday.
  • Fook your 1200marps MS,
  • Really want Limbo but damn! 1200? Seems a tad steep to me. Though I have Blacklight tomorrow and DeathSpank next week, so I can wait awhile.
  • at $15 each, Castlevania is the only one that will be getting my money. And even that one I will probably wait for a DotW. The only other game that seemed interesting was Limbo, but from what I've heard, it's pretty short (roughly 3-4 hours I'm hearing). Who knows for sure right now, but $15 for a 4 hour game, I will definitely pass on.
  • Definitely want Limbo, but thankfully that's all. Might not get it immediately though, I don't have the points right now.
  • @5 Not before i kill you :)
  • Shitty games for shitty prices, booooo. This summer of arcade blows.
  • This is getting out of hand...1200MSP should NOT be the standard price for most brand new Arcade games. Most PC games that are digitally distributed only (aka no retail box) usually price out for $9.99 so 800MSP should be what most new games drop at. I mean shouldn't it say something to Microsoft when the sales jump up when stuff drops from 1200 to 800?
  • Buuuuullll Shiiiiiitttt!
  • I'm only getting Hydro Thunder and maybe Blacklight tomorrow...
  • Even though I want hydro thunder, 1200msp is too much, I'll want for a deal of the week
  • @4 i think they were on offer like a few months ago for like 1600
  • The only one of those I care about is Lara Croft. Even then, I'll wait till it's a DOTW and dropped to a more reasonable 800 points or lower. It'll happen eventually. (Though I've been waiting for the Halo Wars DLC to become a DOTW and they still haven't so, I guess I might be waiting a while)
  • Hydro Thunder and Castlevania are the only games I'm going to pick up this summer other than Blacklight which comes out tomorrow. It's a shame that Microsoft is charging 1200 each now or else I would buy Tomb Raider as well.
  • I'll get MI2 tomorrow, not all this over priced shit
  • Something that Kotaku reported that isn't in this article, apparently if you buy 3 of the titles during the "Summer of Arcade" you'll receive 400 points back
  • I'm interested in purchasing all of those games, but just not at those prices. Maybe one or two i will buy full price but more likely they will all have to wait until Deal of the week. This 1200 msp thing is getting out of hand. It's really starting to piss me off.
  • No promotion for getting them all or anything? Last year you got 800 pts, so buying them all pretty much got one for free...paying 1200 for 4 and getting the 5th free would almost be worth it, but there are only two I really want. Limbo is awesome, and 3-4 hrs might be the timeline if you have some kind of guide, but I watched a group of people brainstorming on how to solve certain puzzles for over 30 minutes each, so I don't see it being "short"...and it's not "throw your controller" frustrating when you fail, as you die in a spectacular fashion, and out of nowhere...we weres loving just watching other people play because it was different and entertaining.
  • when the heck is Hydrophobia coming out?
  • Uninterested in all of these except for Castlevania! Symphony of Night was great and im hoping this lives up to my expectations.
  • I want all of those besides Hydro Thunder, if I have to pick and choose I'll go with Limbo and Castlevania. Maybe Monday Night Combat, since #5 is so insistent. ;) With those and DeathSpank next week, it's gonna be an expensive summer. And Shank is supposed to come out this summer too. *sigh*
  • Everyone bend over here it comes!
  • Konami's milking the SotN Castlevania formula and, normally, I'd be sheep for 'em but $15 for a co-op time trial SotN is too much. And Puzzle of the Night or whatever looks horrible.
  • Getting Castlevania for sure.
  • I was hoping for comic jumper. :(
  • WTF where's Tango Down?
  • I want none of those lol - SHANK/Comic Jumper/Deathspank/Deadliest Warrior/Toe Jam and Earl/ Privates looks funny(immature) there the ones i want- i dnt really get the limbo looks bloody depressing if u ask me lol :)
  • You guys really need to stop crying about paying an extra 5$. These developers put alot of time into these arcade games (Limbo has been in developement for 4 years) and you need to support them. Soon gaming will be ruled by the mainstream (activison) and you will need to pay a monthly fee for almost every game. Stop complaining.
  • you forgot to mention that if you buy all 5 you get 1200 microsoft points back, and if you buy 3 you get 400 back
  • @42 Blacklight Tango Down isn't a "Summer of Arcade" game, it does release tomorrow July 7th though,1200pts. I'll get Hydrothunder and Monday Night Combat, I'll wait for the others to be a DotW.
  • YES! Monday Night Combat!
  • i just want hydro thunder... going to download the trial for MNC
  • Really only looking forward to limbo, but not at this price.
  • MNC is the only one that interests me everything else is meh.
  • I can't tell you how nice it is to finaly see everyone agree with one another on this site :P and @ #34 If you buy all 5 you will be reimbursed 1200 MSP and #32 you were right about the buy at least 3 and get back 400 msp. as far as me, I will be getting Limbo and monday night cambat on day one for sure, Limbo looks really original and monday night combat looks like all kinds of crazy fun!!
  • But also yes I agree they are overpriced, we can thank games like shadow complex for letting microsoft realize that people will pay for overpriced short arcade games
  • Only interested in Limbo, and even then I can wait for the inevitable deal of the week.
  • only lara croft worth 1200 , I'll wait for castlevania to be dotw
  • 15 clams per game? They really need to let these games start out with more than 200G. Why not double it up to 400 and let WindowsPhone games be 200?
  • If Microsoft follows the trend, next summer we'll see all of these games on a DotW. So I'll save my money and buy Castlevania for 800 points next year. I've got SotN right now, so I'm good for a while. And with Lords of Shadow coming out....I won't need this new one for a good long while.
  • Limbo at 800 would have been tempting, but 1200 is too much for a 2-3 hour game. Hopefully Lara Croft is long enough of a game to warrant the price.
  • Sweet Castlevania, Hydro Thunder, and Monday Night look awesome.
  • I just remembered the XBLA game The Deadliest Warrior releases next Wednesday, July 14th, I hope that's not 1200 pts too.
  • Spend £50 to get £10 free, erm no? I'd rather get money instead of MSP.
  • They ( Microsoft) do this because they know there are enough people that will buy these games at these prices and make a hefty profit and then when they DOTW all of the said games all the stragglers will buy these games up like its Black Thursday while still making an acceptable profit margin.
  • I've got to say...this line-up looks really weak to me. Nowhere near as interesting as the last 2 summer of arcade's were.
  • @59 - previews have said that 800 is the price for Deadliest Warrior. Hopefully the game ends up being decent.
  • no castlevania for me :( those prices suck
  • Summer of Arcade 2010 deal of the week in 2011. Nuff said.
  • Monday Night Combat is the only thing that looks interesting to me, probably because it looks an awful lot like TF2. Hmmm...well, time to play some TF2. SO LONG SUCKERS!!!
  • Wow, I'm shocked that people are shocked. $15 is the price point for arcade games now. $10 games will now be rarity. Who's to blame? We are, the consumer. When games like Trials and Shadow Complex, among others, sold this was enivitable. The same reason that we have over priced map packs (I'm looking at you MW2) and this trend will continue. In a couple of years $20 will be the norm. Accept it and move on. We the consumer have the ability to band together as a collective and stand up to the pricing but we lack the will power. I have not and will not pay $15 for an arcade game. Yeah it sucks to wait for dotw but eventually got to play some of the afore mentioned games but at a price I was happy with. So next time you see a bit of content that is over priced make sure to thank your fellow gamers!
  • If I buy 3 games, get 400 msp's.. Then buy then other 2, I get 800 or another 1200msp's?? Hmm
  • I'll just wait 4 or 5 months, then when Hydro Thunder goes on Xbox Live Deal of the Week, boom, thats when I'll get it.
  • Awesome Castlevania a day before my birthday. But $15 is still stupid
  • Hydro Thunder has me interested, but not for 1200msp. Also, wasn't Symphony of the night 800? Why is this one 1200? I have plenty to get playing anyway right now so I can wait. Let the idiots be fleeced of their money first.
  • Limbo should be worth the price..hopefully
  • Loved Hydro Thunder on dreamcast but think i'll wait till it's 800 msp insetad of the 1200. Today i'm gonna buy the 2nd monkey island aracde game.
  • ummmmm no thanks, I was interested in some of these games but not for that price
  • looks pricey, but limbo looks like one amazing game. I badly want Hydro also but will wait for dotw
  • @#3 are you kidding, they all are shit? at least 3 of them are going to be good..limbo, castlevania, and lara croft so im probably going to get those and then 1 more and get the other free (essentially)
  • Same as most people, I'm interested in some of the games (Tomb Raider Castlevania) but I find 1200MS for those games a bit expensive, so I'll wait and buy them when they'll be down to 800MS. I think one of the only things I would buy for 1200MS would be the DreamCast ports (because some of those games can give a lot of hours of play). 1600MS, for me, are only worthy for "big contents", like GTA IV Add-ons. 400MS, in my opinion, should only be old/little games (like the old Arcade/Genesis ports), and 800MS for most of the new games.
  • What about Shank? Is it not on the list because it's coming out in September? Or is it because it'll cost less (although I greatly doubt that)?
  • I'm getting Limbo for sure and will think about Castlevania and Tomb Ra... I mean Lara Croft if I'll like the trial versions. 1200 on all the titles is a bit expensive.
  • Limbo, Castlevania, and prolly monday night combat
  • Limbo will be a first day buy for me. I just hope it will not be as bad as Lucidity ended up to be. Anybody have some news about Fez? I'm not sure if it will be an XBLA title or an Indie release only. I live in Belgium and don't have access to Indie games...(ffs)
  • Not really a buy 4 get one free since they give you 1200 points back, forcing you to spend it on something else on the marketplace that money doesn't go back in your pocket. Damn marketing schemes.
  • Really glad Limbo is the first one to be released, because that's the only one I really care about haha. As much as I love Symphony of the Night the new Castlevania's trailer really didn't impress me at all, that can wait until a deal comes along.
  • for 1200 each i'll take a pass. there aren't too many arcade games that've been worth that to me
  • What's up with Shank, Deathspank, Comic Jumper not being in the Summer of Arcade lineup? That's just wierd. I think Limbo is the only thing in the actual SoA lineup I'm interested in.
  • I will probably buy them all so a refund is nice.
  • I'll wind up buying 'em all but fuck, 1,200MSP each?! ugh, at least I'd get a rebate for that at some point. Castlevania and Limbo are absolute must haves.
  • No Lara before nearly the end of august... I'm really sad now T_T
  • hell yeah cant wait for these games gonna buy them all i want my Free MSP Baby Yes!! Gamerscore FTW!! trying to reach 150000 only at 113000 best Games Ever
  • Anyone else feel like if we shell out 1200 MSP per game the achievement score should be upped to 300 pts? (400 MSP per 100 achievement points available)
  • Wow 1200 a piece. If they are awesome it isn't that big of a deal. I figured Limbo & the Lara Croft game would be that much and Castlevania is probably worth the money anyway. The other two I'm not so sure about. I am planning on picking up Limbo and Castlevania, but I'm not buying all the games like I did last year just to get the "free" points. Although last year's line-up was a lot stronger with Shadow Complex, Trials HD, 'Splosion Man, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and TMNT: Turtles in Time, but that's just my opinion.
  • Limbo seems pretty interesting, Castlevania is always fun, though I've never played it on the 360 before.
  • I wanted a few of these but now ill wait for a price drop coz 1200 is too much for EACH of those, coulda thrown in 1 or 2 800's
  • $15 is too much. I want Limbo, maybe Castlevania (I am still not sure what HoD even is other than 4 player with DS characters+Alucard) and potentially Lara Croft, but $5 back for spending $45? I dunno. If I get $45 I care to blow, then maybe, but until then, that's a bit too pricey. Luckily, I have until the end of August to decide if I am gonna go for it or not.
  • 1200 msp is a lot for a game that is obviously just too shit to be released on retail. Especially for a Castlevania game they are ancient lol. But I will still probably get Tomb Raider.
  • about time for them to mention them. Im just glad to see them coming out but crazy prices.
  • Castlevania and Lara Croft are definite buys for me! I've never heard of any other games.
  • @95 Castlevania games ancient? On consoles maybe, but they've thriving on the GBA and DS for nearly a decade, and for the most part they've all been excellent. HoD is bascially a culmination of those games, featuring characters from all of them, and I can't wait.
  • Ill pay that price for castlevania....I mean IGA said that the better the game does sales wise the more dlc he'll bring out...more characters...more stages...plus its castlevania nuff said
  • There is nothing intersting in this 2010 summer of arcade. Not like the past year, every games was excellent! But this year, it's bad, too bad!!
  • nothing really of interest to me unfortunately but, anybody who says [DD] PC games are $10, erm... lies, they are at least $20 [guessing here, i'm english] and stay that way until they are in deals and as for the people that say there is less gameplay in XBLA titles than retail ones, lol, also lies it's not that the arcade games are shit, most games are shit, what pisses me off is when they remove games from the marketplace saying they are streamlining it bollocks, it's not selling well, and they couldnt be arsed to upgrade the storefront to hold much more than 250 games [new game added each week and the game count has hardly changed since i got a 360 in Jan] it's not a hosting issue, as they are all still there, but the software won't show them for some reason all i want now is SSHD:TSE, and some money to buy MI2:SE donations to:- [email protected] [j/k obviously]
  • Hmmm...I defo want Hydro Thunder and am intrigued by Limbo (looked really cool in action at PAX). Castlevania...that seems more like a $10 release, but it will be tempting. Will demo that one at least. Not really interested in Mon Night Combat or Tomb Raider (already have a couple of retail TRs that I have not put much time into). Certainly not as cut and dry as last year, but if I am already two or three titles deep, might as well get the lot...
  • I agree 1200msp is too much, but then again if people are willing to pay that much for 5 maps in package, then I don't see why MS shouldn't do this. It seems people like to bitch over something that they knew was going to empty their wallets. Only games I'm interested in are games that have been promised to be out before the summer. 1. Battleblock Theater 2. Yu Gi Oh 3. Quake 4. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 5. Sonic Adventure 6. Bomberman Live: Battlefest
  • That really sucks. I wanted to get Hydro thunder first day but not for 15 bucks. I will wait until it goes on sell for 800 mp.
  • I was kind of interested in Lara Croft but with these prices I might just get Limbo, the game I want the most of all, or just wait for them to become part of the Deal of the Week.
  • Limbo it is, was totally expecting an 800 point price tag, but noooo
  • I kind of want all 5 but little torn on Hydro Thunder but damn, 15 bucks each? And where's Comic Jumper? Or Scott Pilgrim? Shank? Dust: Elysian Tail?
  • I will get Limbo and Lara Croft the day they are released, can´t wait!!! Not sure about the rest yet.
  • These will all go on sale during the Winter and then a year from now even cheaper so no point in buying any now. I am not interested in any of these titles anyways so I will just pass and 1200MSP is to steep IMO for an arcade game.
  • #107 Don't worry if you are unsure on one game... it's buy 4 get one free lol so as long as you are only unsure of one game then you are fine! :) But that's essentially 5 arcade games for the price of one retail game in the UK. No thank you! Will invest in something like Medal of Honor, New Vegas or Black Ops.
  • People whine about a $15 game being 3-4 hours long yet forget that a lot of $60 games are that long too. Seriously people...
  • remember when games were 800msp? seems like they want more money
  • woooow not good.i have a feeling none of these games are worth 1200 of my points
  • @44 Yes, let's roll over and let someone else make all of the decisions regarding our source of entertainment, our opinion doesn't matter, our buying power is non-existent (sarcasm). Summer of Arcade feels weak this year, especially when you consider the number of good, excluded titles releasing around the same time (Shank, DeathSpank, Comic Jumper, etc.)
  • Somebody already know whem crazy taxi will be out on xbox live aracde? Want that one but not sure about the new soundtrack though. Game doesn't feel the same without the offspring soundtrack.
  • Fools! Anyone who has dismissed Limbo without even knowing what it is needs shooting. It will be one of the games of the year, mark my words. Castlevania is also on my list of must haves... I haven't bought an arcade game for ages and I am holding fire my retail purchases until Halo: Reach, so I look forward to a few of these to tide me over. Great line up MS, keep it up. Maybe have a reconsider on the pricing mind...
  • There are 3 that I'm looking forward to. Limbo, Castlevania and Lara Croft. I'm definately getting Castlevania day 1. I'll most likely get the other two when they go on sale.
  • Its nice that a few people are waiting for DOTW because that will get them reduced quicker! Limbo & Hydro Thunder look good but probably wouldn't play them for very long - Modern arcade games are good but generally loose their appeal quickly The only games that are worth 1200msp are Trials & BF1943 All good things come to those who wait... After burner = 400msp! yey!
  • Only interested in Limbo and Monday Night Combat, so the price doesn't bother me.
  • poor summer of arcade line-up imo. the only one im interested in is the castlevania game. but im gonna play the trial first before even thinking of forking over 15 bucks for it.
  • Not heard of Monday Night Combat, but the others all interest me. Not at 1200 each though...
  • I'm pretty sure that they're not shitty games. I want Monday Night Combat, Hydro Thunder, and Limbo but I don't really wanna pay 1200 so I'll havta to see how good of review scores they get.
  • Price doesn't matter to me as Lara's new adventure, Limbo, and Castlevania looks awesome. Limbo looking to be the best.
  • Lara croft GOL and limbo look awesome.
  • essentially you will need $75 worth of MSP to get all these games. You will then get a refund of $15(1200 MSP) if you purchase all 5. You could also get a $5(400 MSP) refund if you buy any 3. Are these stacked?? like if i buy all 5 will I essentially get $20(1600 MSP) back? i'm assuming so because it says "additionally"... Its decent deal for somebody who is interested in all of them like myself.
  • WOW that is like 4,800 points to buy all of those. guess i'll just buy COD4 Modern warfare instead which is like 3,400 points. much more understandable.
  • looking forward to castlevania , the screens look sick
  • I'd really like to get Limbo and Hydro Thunder, but 1200 points is a little too expensive.
