Need For Speed: Shift

Is "Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit" Criterion's 2010 NFS Title?

Nestled comfortably in the middle of the "One to Watch" category of the Future Publishing run Golden Joystick Awards is a title that may have slipped through the net. A title that has yet to be officially announced.

I am of course talking about EA's upcoming 2010 Need For Speed title, but with a title that seems to suggest that developers Criterion are almost certainly returning to the franchise's roots for its upcoming sequel.

We already know that Criterion is working on the 2010 version of the franchise thanks to an admission from EA Games Label President, Frank Gibeau, and the odd "cryptic" tweet from Criterion.

The Golden Joystick listed Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit suggests the franchise is set to get the reboot that it needed 5 years ago. Better late than never I suppose.

This would fall in line with the Creative Director, Alex Ward's recent - and now deleted tweet that stated, "Red lining it all the way and making it pay" - a return to the original 3DO version of The Need for Speed."

It seems that evidence is mounting for a return to the old skool for the Need For Speed franchise. News that makes us supremely happy. Anyone care to place a wager on an E3 unveiling?

I still play HP2 on gamecube :D they were best back them. that with updated graphics would rock. but hope they dont upgrade physics much to make it more realistic.

@4 I would say its a bit similar to most wanted, but the hot pursuits were track based and not free roam. Cant believe how long its taken them to finally realise what everybody wants. Underground 3 next year?

HP and HP2 are my favorite NFS titles to date. It would be awesome if they remade HP and went back to the roots!

Yes! I've played NFS 3 Hot Pursuit to death back in the day. If it's anything like that I'll fall on my knees and... wait, i won't. But it would be so cool.

It's about god damn time.

All these shitty NFS games the past few years were unbearable. I pronounced the series dead years ago. Can an old dog learn it's old tricks? I seriously hope so.

When I first heard that Criterion was working on an NFS title I got excited (I'm a huge Burnout fan), but a Hot Pursuit sequel? Loving it! I still play and enjoy Hot Pursuit 2 on my PC and PS2.

I'd rather have Criterion doing a Burnout Paradise sequel but I won't pass on one of their games, I loved BP to much.

Fingers crossed it'll be good, but seeing as Criterion are working on it, i doubt it'll be crap! Oh and was i the only person who liked NFS SHIFT rather that BORZA 3? Yes that is BORZA coz i found it umm boring lol.

This sucks as NFS:Shift was actually a decent racer. I was hoping that a sequel would expand of it's good aspects to produce a game to better to Grid. Shift almost managed it.

If it's anything like Underground, Underground 2 or Most Wanted I'm gonna play this. Every other NFS since then has sucked imo.

@6 I'd tear if tht happens....Underground 2 was the greatest. If they make Underground 3 I'd definitely cry lol......but its abt damn time tho, I lost faith in NFS. Hopefully this will bring them out of this sinking hole of UBER failure

They should really make an Underground 3 or Most Wanted 2. I didn't really enjoy Carbon or Prostreet. Undercover was pretty good. Shift was a good high speed racer, but we'll see what happens.

HP was the last good NFS game!!!

Driving games don't need a free roam element, i you ask me thats what ruined NFS, Burnout, Midnight Club etc

Underground, Shift = CRAP
Most Wanted, Carbon = Playable

The first 6 NFS games were the business, just an open road, a fast car going from A to B, and that was all you needed, none of this faffing around with street slang, cinematics (aka 'a story') or daft mods.

The latest Tweet from Criterion points to a definite 'Official' reveal at E3.

I was a fan of the versus mode in Hot Pursuit in which one person played a racer, the other a cop who had to stop them by out driving them and the careful use of spike strips. That could be awesome online, one racer versus a bunch of cops anyone?

Why can't we have Criterion doing Burnout Paradise 2 and the team from Shift working on Shift 2. There were plenty of good bits to Shift, would be a shame to throw them in the bin.
