GDC: EA Forge Deal With Developer '38 Studios' For RPG Epic Codenamed 'Project Mercury'
Written Tuesday, March 09, 2010 By Richard Walker

EA has signed an agreement with newly formed 38 Studios to publish their upcoming RPG epic currently going under the codename of 'Project Mercury'.

There's a wealth of impressive talent on board for the game too, not least in the baseballing department since 38 Studios was founded by World Series MVP and ex-Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, who evidently is an incredibly avid gamer.

Ken Rolston, lead designer on Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is also leading the project, which is the first entry into a new universe created by New York Times best-selling fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. Art direction for Project Mercury will be handled by none other than Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.

That's an incredible roster of raw talent right there, which should make for a very interesting RPG prospect indeed. Big Huge Games, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 38 Studios is developing the game.

"We are creating an enormous world, with heroes and villains and a rich back story from the brilliant minds of R. A., Todd and Ken at its heart," said Schilling.

We'll be keeping our eye on this one.

Todd McFarlane does good character design, but is a terrible storyteller, so hopefully he won't be involved too much in direction apart from an artist standpoint. On the whole it sound pretty promising though.

GREAT! Thanks for the news on this topic, I'm quite interested...it's nice to know RPG's aren't slowing down any time soon.

Got FF13 out now, and with that new one by Sega that looks alright...I can't argue one more in the near future, that's for sure.

It'll be nice to be getting back into the more "westernized" style after playing through the two previously mentioned...or atleast that's what I'm assuming this will be. (Ofcourse I'll be sure to be getting my fair share of DA:Origins in as well.

Either way I meant to say that quote = Game's got potential. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for further updates.

Oh wow. That could be good, but with all that talent, if it isn't Game of the Year material, people will complain.

The news here is EA is publishing it. But this game has been in the "idea" state SINCE the 2004 World Series.

You've got some really really high expectations when you have a roster of talent like that.
