Capcom Cut Content From Lost Planet 2. Could Turn Up As DLC
Written Thursday, February 18, 2010 By Richard Walker
View author's profile

Lost Planet 2's producer Jun Takeuchi has stated that Capcom had to cut some significant content from the final game due to restrictions imposed by the comparative limited capacity of Xbox 360's DVDs.

In a recent interview, Takeuchi said, "This time, truly, the content that was cut was significant and at the end, we had to wrestle with disc space."

He then went on to add, "I think we could be able to add that content at a later date as downloadable content."

While the PS3's Blu-ray format provides plenty of space for the content on Sony's platform, making LP2 multiformat has proved a challenge for Capcom as Takeuchi summed up by saying, "the edited content was way too much and dealing with that was more difficult than anything."

Don't fret though. There's still hope that the DLC will see the light of day and we're keeping our fingers crossed that it'll be sensibly priced.

Lost Planet 2 is due for worldwide release on May 18th.

Reading between the lines, is that a confession that they have charged for stuff that should have been on game disc's before?

Your not even paying full price to begin with buying this new @ £30. Yes £30. Its not even going to be a full cost title. I mean yeah they could add it on a 2nd disc or you could stop being so damn greedy and realize that you will be getting a full game for your money to begin with. You as "Gamers" need to stop being greedy and face facts. Its a business. The difference between Capcom and Infinty ward? Capcom admit it and still give you a FULL title for your money.

Umm, couldn't they have went the "Launch DLC" route as an incentive to buy new? I mean, that seems to be working well for a lot of games as of late.

I find it funny how everybody thinks its all bs on what they're doing when you've probably all never been a producer or developer so you have no idea what's going on. Can't make people happy at all you can either have the game on time with the content at a later date or you can wait a few more months for them to create a whole new disc and then you'll be angry because they've extended the release date.

If we're to believe that the content is restricted by disc space then any DLC should be free. Capcom is going to start geting a reputation for screwing their customers if they're not careful. Especially after the Vs Mode on Resident Evil 5. Being charged for an unlock key to content on a disc that I've already paid for, is kind of a rip off. Now there's a chance of them charging for content that was supposed to be on the disc? DLC is starting to get a bit daft on the 360. Bad Company 2 is releasing DLC on the same day they release the game?
As long as people are prepared to be robbed like this there is no motivation for developers to give full value for money, and to be honest, nor should they.

If it was supposed to be released then it should be a free DLC. That is just my opinion, and since it is going on the PS3 version out of the box for the same price that would be crap if they made us pay for it.

Here's the thing, a developer won't do multiple discs for one simple reason, they have to pay the licensing fee again to Microsoft for every extra disc. Add on top of this the fact that it increases manufacturing and supply costs by having to include said extra disc. This means they won't do it unless they aren't concerned about making money (which these businesses ARE out to make money) or they are certain they will more than make up those extra costs. They always could increase the cost of the game to try to make up for the fact that they'd need extra discs, but I have a feeling that the exact same people would complain about the cost increase as well and in all likelihood even less people would buy it.

This is the very reason there are only 2 games I can think of that actually have m

If its so significant then the content obviously has nothing to do with the storyline in any major ways, unless ofcourse they decided to completely cut the multiplayer out of the game, replace the MP menu icon with ??????? and then make us pay to play online at a later date.

Either way, Capcom suck balls.

I am sick of companies doing this! If it is true that PS3 will get the lot and xbox will not, maybe it should be free add-on as both will be at the same price in the shops no?

I think if not then Trading Standards would love to look at this.

Same price on play.com £29.99 for both!!!!

I don't think they ever said the PS3 was getting all the content. In fact if my thinking on this is right PS3 only players will likely be ticked because they could of had more lol.

Anyway if Capcom are being honest about why the content is pulled...I have no problem purchasing it.

I dont understand the cutting of content. Look at oblivion and dragon age. Over 50 hours of gameplay on DA:DO and about 100 on oblivion. So wtf is capcom doing to make a game bigger than that and to deny people content that should be on there? As much as I like DLC when I first heard of it when the 360 started, I saw that companies were nickel and dime the players all to hell.

Man if I didn't have an xbox 360 I would be mad about the 360 holding back the PS3. They actually had to fight with disc space... that's laughable. Microsoft bow your head in shame, hurry up and give us a new console, stop living in the past.

Thats just a flatout lie, Mass Effect 2 - 2 Discs, Lost Odyssey - 3 Discs, FFXIII - 3 Discs. Its not like they couldnt have put it onto 2 discs, they just wanted to have plenty of DLC to sell to people and this is their lame excuse. They could have had one disc for campaign and one for multiplayer, simple.

Probably won't be getting this game anyway. The first one was average at best and the introduction of Wesker, Marcus and Dom is laughable IMO.
I'll pass on this and in the process avoid there rip off DLC. They may be telling the truth when they say they can't fit it on the disc, but how can we believe them after the stunt they pulled with RE5?

@#32, Halo ODST did two discs with the campaign on one and the Halo 3 Online on the other. So it's not like it can't be done. I used to love Capcom from the good Resi 4 but after the vs mode which sucked, i have lost faith in this company but they should do two discs.

@37 The campaign was short (a bit over 7 hours for Veteran, about 4 hours on Regular + Intel), Spec Ops was a joke aside from 1 mission. Multiplayer is fun but after awhile it gets way too old.

Anyways, Lost Planet 2 is looking like a huge winner to me. I loved the first one, but got the game around the time where multiplayer on it was starting to die down, so hopefully I can play it on this one

this is getting just stupid, these companies know how much data they can put on a 360 disc, plan accordingly!! many other massive games have fit on one disc or even split themselves onto multiple discs. Cutting content to sell it later is just dirty. I hope they will be sensible and put this up for free cuz we def should not be paying for this.

So, im really tired of this so I will not be purchasing this crap. If you cut it from the original then it needs to be free. i think DLC has ruined the way they develop the material. I remember back when the games lasted over 12 hours, now they last 6-8 and you have to buy the rest of the game. Fuck you capcom I will be purchasing a Ps3 so i can quit giving you my money crapbox.

Well considering what happened with LP1 and LP1 colonies, it's not surprising. However this is from a company that also is going to release Super SF4 and RE5 Gold edition. So either way the (original game and buyers) 360 version was gonna get screwed over. Also you guys forgot Forza Motorsport 3 (2), Blue Dragon(3) and Last Remnant(2).

To everyone defending capcom and bashing everyone that doesn't want to believe PR shit. How would you feel if you were going to see a movie then all of a sudden at the final act of the movie a black screen pops up saying *to see the ending come back in two months and pay to see the rest*? You'd be crying foul, as to an extent it seems like capcom is doing the same but in the sense of getting the entire experience out of your game.

And this is why I have officially named Capcom to "Crapcom"

People complain about EA being greedy but at least they offer incentive to buying their games new by giving you free DLC if you purchase the game on Day 1. Capcom goes ahead and does the infamous Street Fighter IV costumes incident, Resident Evil 5 Vs. Mode incident and then charges you in Mega Man 9 for a difficulty level and Protoman.

Seriously? How much does a blank disc cost? After it's all said and done, Capcom would spend pennies extra, if that, for each copy of the game.
I think Capcom is using the disc space chip as an excuse to cut content and get more money for it later. Otherwise, they would've said "The 360 disc limit is an issue, on day one there will be additional content to download, for free, to get the complete retail game."

Average in length? I put 97 hours into that game to 100% it. I still haven't done the FREE DLC yet.
I wish this was average length for an RPG. It use to be, now Square, Tri-Ace, etc... are getting lazy and greedy. Average RPG length is more like 30 hours now. It's really sad.

Wait, isn't Capcom the company that released several different versions of Street Fighter 2? Now we're getting Super Street Fighter 4, which most of the content in it could have been DLC instead of making it a whole new disc we would have to buy. Now I'm not saying that they are BSing the reason for pulling the content from this game, but doesn't it seem like in this day and age they aren't looking for alternative solutions that are available to them?

@ 37

MW2 not short? under 2 hours on recruit, under 7 hours for veteran, yea that's really long...for a game which toke roughly 2 years to be made.

It better be free or add a code to the back of the booklet and when they put the DLC up on the marketplace you enter the code and get it for free.

I call BS on this. The disc space is not the issue here, it's lazy programmers and distributors. They can compress media down quite a bit on modern dual-layer 9 gig DVDs, and the game will sell more than enough to generate a hefty profit even with multiple discs and the subsequent licensing that they would have to deal with. They just don't want to commit more time and money on polishing out what looks to be a great game. Still looking forward to it, though.

This is a problem i hope Xbox 720 uses blu-ray even if it means they have to pay Sony for it. They should have put Hd-dvd in all Xbox 360s instead of releasing the add, on then maybe the Blu-ray Hd-dvd war had turned out differently

To asort this problem just put it on two discs and make one install like Forza 3 before you start play.Sorted

Only downside is that they couldn't screw us for more money this way.

Your talking crap Jun Takeuchi, nice try to get people to pay more but i know i won't be buying it.

If the content don't come free on disc on PS3 you know it is a straight screw to get more money.

If it is on PS3 version i will be buying that instead.

By "sensibly priced" they better mean free, they can't confirm that stuff was to be on the disc and then say "Oh you want the stuff planned for the disc well F*** you pay us extra for it", F*** you Capcom, and I bet the first things to be removed will be Dom & Marcus and Wesker, they are the sort of things people on Xbox live would pay for, and seeing how it's all multiplayer stuff there on about I may just skip this all together if it's not free DLC or on a second disc, as I was only buying it for the multiplayer anyway.

Okay so they couldn't just make it a 2 disc version like ME2?? Keep bullshitting Capcom and milking us for some extra DLC^^ Or maybe it was Microsoft's idea...

If they are just in it for the money (obviously, in this case), yet they still had to be stupid enough to leak it out in an interview. Looks like I will skip the instinct to invest in the "crammed disc space" of Lost Planet 2. Not like I think it will dent it's sales, but that is about as upfront as it gets that they are about the dollar, not the customer (which if they realized, usually putting the customer first gives you the money in the long term). Oh well!!

What a scam. Oh well, a foll and they're money are soon parted. It makes me glad that I had no interest in this sh*t title to begin with. Even Fenix and Dom can't save this turd.

Now this is truly bullshit. Usually DLC is preplanned and that's how they get it out so fast, but not wanting to put it on an install disc is just stupid. Forza 3 put a shit load of content on an install only disc and then you have the main playable disc. This is a blatant attempt at not trying and just opting to stab us for money.

Usually I don't hop onto these bash fests for this type of thing, but this one doesn't make any sense. Just make itDLC and charge you for it??? Really?!?!? When obviously it was something they wanted to include in the first place.....saddening Capcom really....

2 discs doesn't cost shit for the producer. I think they just don't like the idea of 2 discs and figured why not make more money later anyways. DVD roms are a thing of the past. Look at Mass Effect 2, it wasn't that long of a game yet it took 2 discs. Within the next year, expect to see 2-3 disc games for 360. It's like PS1 all over again. Halo 3 had to dumb down the graphics to fit it all on one disc. MS, either 1) allow us to use USB memory sticks, 2) release a blu ray add on, or 3) release a new console that supports blu ray and the upcoming 3D capabilities that PS3 will bring this year.

@#94 - Don't expect to see Blu-Ray on an Xbox console any time soon, especially as it's Sony-backed technology...

I personally don't care about this news, if the DLC ends up being free then I'll get over it.

So does this mean that PS3 owners get the full game and we get part of game that we'll have to spend extra money on to get the same complete game? If they charge for it that would be complete bullshit since it's already done and only not included due to size constraints.

There is no reason for Microsoft to update the tech, why... because more of these companies are making money from 360 game sales than PS3 game sales. On the list of most played consoles, PS3 is fourth. They'd make back the money on a 2nd disc, in fact they probably lost more money doing this because of how many people won't be buying it now. If its about the money take a page from Activision and consider pulling from PS3, like they have been. Its just not competing right now.
