Final Fantasy XIII Shipping on Three Discs?
Written Tuesday, February 02, 2010 By Alan Pettit

A few months ago I recall reading an interview with FF XIII's director Motomu Toriyama which quoted him as saying he "hoped" to have the game ship on "about three discs worth of content." The same interview estimates 40-50 hours for the main story, with additional content through side-quests and achievements. If online game rental site Gamefly is anything to go by, his hopes have been realized. Their product page has shown up, specifically noting that the game will have exactly three discs.

So, expect to get at least two breaks while playing the game. Might I suggest coupling that trip off the couch with a bathroom break and a refrigerator run?

Haha even more than I expected. Still can't figure out how to put everything onto one playable disc and just put a install only disc?

@ #12 is that a serious question?
Or do you honestly not know?

The PS3 version will be one disc.
Which is why I'm getting it for PS3 instead of Xbox. If MS is going to keep living in the last gen then they don't deserve my support when the competition is in present time.

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 01:34:04 AM

@#13: Chill out. Microsoft isn't living in last gen, they wanted to appeal to the everyman. Sure there's not as much fancy hardware, but it was also a lot cheaper. One disc or three, it doesn't make a difference. I'm still getting this at midnight if my Gamestop will be open.

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 01:37:52 AM

@13: Seriously?

Yes, the Blu Ray format allows a developer more room on a single disc for content. But last I checked, the best PS3 games don't look any better than the best 360 games, don't play any better, and sure as hell don't cost any less. So unless swapping discs is way too taxing for you, I don't see how that makes a difference. Turn down the drama dial.

All that said, I'm getting it on PS3 too. But only cause it's the lead platform. ;)

i agree who really cares if it's on one disc or three.. like just the buy the game on whichever platform you prefer. i prefer the 360 controller and thus when games are released on multiple platforms i choose xbox, and u know those achievement things...

tbh, ps3 might be next gen, but its dropping it exslusivities like a tree in autumn. Tekken, metal gear solid to name two, plus the xbox exclusives, L4D, Mass Effect, GTA, forza and those are just ones off the top of my head. The only PS3 exclusives I can think of are uncharted, god of war and killzone... oh and little big planet (ive seen to many ads for that now). So before long I think the only reason for owning a ps3 is that you cant afford a new xbox to replace it

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 02:31:11 AM

Def getting this for PS3! Disc swapping is a bit pathetic in this day and age. As someone said, they should have a game disc and two install discs and let those with big enough hard drives avail of that storage.
Alas, this is an undeniable point to Sony.
Alan Wake better be good! :0)

Tuesday, February 02, 2010 @ 02:41:02 AM

By the way, some people are saying that swapping a disc isn't exactly hard work.

To me, you are missing the point. Developers spend a LOT of time and effort these days trying to make games as engaging and rich experience as possible. They want the gamer to get completely absorbed in their game. Things like long loading times are often criticised for breaking the mood or atmosphere of a game. Now if something as small as that is open to criticism, just think how much more of an impact it will have when you need to get up, get a disc from a box, put it in the console, etc, etc, etc.

If you could watch a movie WITH or WITHOUT commercials/adverts, what would you choose?

#20: He ment PS3 is the lead platform... FOR THIS GAME! You just made a stupid comment yourself.

#24: I would rather have a discswap two times playing through a game, then longer loadtimes (which the blu-ray drives so generously sponseres) throughtout the entire game.

However I'm suspecting the PS version of FF might be supperior regardless. Higher res cutscenes (of which there are alot, and being the lead platform).

disc swapping isn't really a chore! i mean i'm pretty sure u need to turn it off at some point, even if its just to cool down so it doesn't red ring before you complete it! lol

and besides it wouldn't be final fantasy unless u get an epic cliffhanger of a cutscene and the it fades to black with the good old insert disc 2 message!

Dont really know if this game is worth it anymore, with all those bad reviews, and that the game is more linear than a SNES rpg game....

I mean, come on no cities in the whole game...

The game’s linearity was just because depicting towns and so on like we did before was impossible to do on an “HD” console – it was too much work.

It's obvious that more people don't mind disc swapping over those that do mind it. Just look at the sales of Mass Effect 2. Go ahead and buy the game on PS3. No one loses any money over it anyway.

LOL @ 13. What do you expect? The 360 is supposed to magically add a bluray drive to your console? Supporting the next gen? This is a next gen system. Come on now! In order for this game to be on a system with dual layer DVD's, it has to be split. I'd rather have a 3 disc game then no game at all.

Back in the day, I remember having to change discs for FF games; I know the more recent ones didn't need it, but the PS1 ones certainly did and I didn't mind it then either.

I've had so many games that require disc swapping, that I normally have that in mind when I'm choosing to take a break from a game anyway. That and the fact I have to get my hands on as many RPG/JRPGs that I can.

Still 3 discs isnt exactly a problem. FF7 was over 3 discs and they put the disc swaps at excellent times. And mass effect 2 had 2 discs. It doesnt reli breeak up the gameplay. you're just complaining too much.

Wow, big fail #13. If you're really so big on tech, you should hate Sony right about now for supporting Blu-ray in the first place. HD-DVD would have most definitely been a better format for gaming on by having more storage capacity but not sacrificing read speed (Blu-ray read speed is horrendous). Plus, I'd much rather just have to swap discs twice during a game than do like Metal Gear Solid 4 did and install for 3-4 minutes in between each section. Guess which takes more of your time.

That aside... I don't care how many discs this is on, I'd rather have zero Final Fantasy discs. Which is exactly the number I have right now, and exactly the number I will still have after FF13 comes out. So at least I win even if they put it on 15 discs. :)

I want FFXIII and would rather have it on the 360. It's the same game, but I prefer achievements to trophies. I don't care about disc swapping because I'm not going to be playing this game straight though anyway, so it's not going to kill any immersion for me.

Anyway, carry on with pointless debates.

is that why MW2 at launch did over 4 million copies on the Xbox and a little over a million on PS3?

Seen the attach rate for all the consoles lately?

also NPD reported the Xbox360 (by far) was the most played console in 2009. Online and Offline. Previous year it was still the almighty PS2. Do some research and know what your talking about before you gab.

I would like to be able to install the discs to my hard drive :( But it isnt enough for me to want a PS3. I went to a game store to play the PS3 for an hour. Uncharted 2 was very mediocre, in fact i didnt care for it much. The menu system and their version of a dashboard was very bland and now I see why it's free. Anyone should be buying this game, not getting it from gamefly! You'll need a 3 at a time for swapping, if its anything like star ocean you'll need to swap between all discs in order to go back to previous worlds!

It might still be two discs, DVD-DL discs are roughly 8GB, 3 discs = 24GB, Blu-ray is 20GB i think. Plus the ps3 version i expect to have some hidden extras as final fantasy 13 is all about sony with agito being a ps3 exclusive and another ff13 for the psp.

wow, you mean i have to get off my ass for maybe a whole 20 seconds to change a disk if i want to keep playing the game, no way, thats 20 seconds of my life wasted
im gonna get the ps3 version since it will mean i only have to get my ass off the sofa once /sarcasm
the human race gets worse everyday it seems
anyway, im glad its 3 discs, to me it just means plenty of content^_^

What's with alot of people bitching about it being on 3 discs? "I'll get it on PS3, caus of this" two words LAZY BASTARDS.

Changing discs is hardling challenging unless your a fat ass who only leaves the couch for food and water. What did you expect from Microsoft? The console released a year ahead of the PS3 and STILL beats it in sales, even with the "Last gen hardware" as all you idiots put it.

If you can't be bothered moving to change discs, you really need to have a look at yourself and realise you gotta move off that damn couch.

Question: Why are people complaining now when they didn't complain back when FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX came on multiple discs? Seriously guys? Complaining about switching discs? Oooh. Take twenty seconds out of your already wasted life; you weren't going to achieve anything in that time anyway. Just consider it a piss break.

First of all Trophies and Achievements are not entirely the same thing as they have a different format. Personally I prefer the Achievements format but its no big deal and its not that important to me.

Also, why do people assume that everyone is getting it on the PS3 because it is one disc, besides does it really matter to you if someone else only wants one disc?

Seems like it'll take a while to complete everything..at least its better then buying a game for $60 and be done with it within a day or two.. =)

#96, Yes Trophies and Achvs are the same exact thing. Trophies are just different colors for difficulty.

Anyways, the 360 fanboys just like to call the people who want it on PS3 lazy because they (the 360 fanboys) get the lesser version.

Is not spending 2 seconds to change a disc really lazy? Cmon now.

Definetly Getting this Game when released on March 9th! For the Xbox 360, Disc Swapping.... Not really that much of a bother to me, I've done it in the past and For Lost Odyssey. Plus I don't get why people are commenting about this game for PS3 when its on a Xbox site, its of course going to cause some sort of argument.

Idk why a admin memeber for a "Microsoft Achievement" site say anything on PS3 is better? Someone higher up then him/her should take a look and maybe throw him to the wolfs on the PS3(sister site) version. Just saying......

I could care less about the whole PS3 vs 360 war going on all the time. I have a 360 so I'll be getting the 360 version. Every game I'm playing is downloaded on my HD anyway. I'm waiting to see if this will affect not having to switch disks.

If not, it's not like I was planning to play 60 hours straight anyway. At some point I'd have to do the other important things in my life (work, wife, eat, etc.) so I don't have a problem taking an extra 5-10 seconds to change a disk.

The game isnt out on the xbox yet so how would you know anything about a version having better graphics amd frame rate than another. The PS3 version has been reviewed in Japan. The xbox version wasnt released there so we wont know til the reviews start coming in in March. Games that are on both platforms generally look and run better on the 360 than a PS3. Both systems are capable of running games in HD. Cut scenes are likely to run the same on both systems while I suspect the 360 version will run smoother and possibly look better in game. A recent example of this happening is Bayonetta. The 360 got rave reviews while the PS3 version had enormous amounts of lag.

Im going to wait and see which system it runs better on. But yeah achievements for the win.

If u like japenese games get ps3 if u like everything else get xbox or be like me have both and still love xbox. PS3 is what the name says POS3 menu's stink and network problems. Coo don't have to swap disc but last I checked it cost 600 at first now finally only down to 300 which is still over priced and then spend 30$ buck on blu-rays so not worth it for just a damn disc

Rofl at this flame war.

IF i get this game it'll be for ps3. It might not be a playstation exclusive series anymore, but it will be a lot better for PS3, for more reasons than one.

Also @116, you couldnt be any more of a tool. Bayonetta is a PORT which was originally designed for the 360, the PS3 version was a cheap imitation which should never have been made. Apart from a few nintendo handhelds, Final Fantasy has been pretty much PSX/PS2 exclusive, so imo the PS3 version will have the advantage here, where as the 360 version will be a PORT.

Remember one thing, Japan hate Microsoft and Xbox.

@124 I agree.

Go ahead and get your PS3 version because it has ONE disc. I'd rather have 3 of them. I'm getting more physical and the exact same virtual game for my $60. Also there's a better chance that only ONE disc could get screwed up instead of losing the entire game in case something happens.

If you are really to lazy to stand up and move the 5 feet to switch a disc, then you should be investing in wii fit or some sort of diet program.

@ 130 Actually the Porn industry is the only reason blu-ray won the battle between itself and HD DVD not because of Sony not even a little bit. HD only has slightly less storage space but doesnt have the horrible reading times. Also I dont remmeber anyone saying that Microsoft wanted Blu-ray its not all that special. 360 still has way more sales and its not costing the company money for each sale like it does Sony.

I was also thinking the same thing about the fact that the first 6 games were on Nintendo which is the same amount as is on Playstation "exclusivs" (not counting remakes)

And just so I can jump in on all the fun of this flame war. There are so many former PS exclusivs that have been switched over to XBOX as well but I am not aware of any that went from being an XBOX excl

Pretty soon an entire games franchise can be put onto one disk anyway as Samsung is working on an optical drive that will have 10tb of disk space.

Back to the task at hand, I have a PS3, but I will still get this on 360 as I don't mind disk swapping and I prefer multi-plat games on my 360. Disk swapping will be an excellent stopping point to either stop playing or to take a break.

I seriously have no idea what the hell is even going on right now. Why are people literally hating on each console? I will say, in all fairness, that this is a hard decision for me, and here is why;
First of all, its the fact that the Playstation 1 brought me FF 7 - 9, i know there are others for the Playstation but these are the ones that made the impact. Playstation 2 brought me the amazingness of 10, and 12 i guess, although i'm not exactly a fan of 12 for some reason. So it would just seem right to get 13 on the Playstation as well (it would also look good with my collection of final fantasy games as pretty much all of them have some sort of playstation symbol on them somewhere). Having the one disk is cool, and if the installs are anything like Metal Gear Solid 4, i would prefer the

I prefer the 360 but I will get it for the PS3 because the three discs. I know the story is linear but if you have to go back to a certain area for a quest and you have to change the disc based on location i find that to be annoying. Also for the 360 they compressed the audio and video files so that it would fit on fewer discs. That and if one of the discs get scratched then you can't play through it again later if you like. For this title its PS3 all the way
