BioShock 2

Revealed: Crazy Features Cut From BioShock
Written Thursday, January 28, 2010 By Richard Walker

Irrational Games' 'Insider' page on their website reveals a bunch of features that ended up being cut from BioShock.

Among these, the most significant feature to get the axe was an entire pressure system that required you to adjust the atmospheric pressure for each room, switching the setting between low, medium or high.

The system would have visually changed every area depending on the pressure, with added fog, light and rendering effects. It would have also altered the behaviour of enemies, reducing a Splicer's perception in low pressure rooms, for instance.

Irrational chose to get rid of the pressure mechanic as it would have tripled the amount of work for the art team and made it impossible to control the mood for each room.

“Most importantly — and this is the issue that put the nail in the system’s coffin — was that we never found a good way to clearly convey the effect of pressure through audiovisual changes," states BioShock's Technical Director Chris Kline.

Turns out the code was solid though, because portions of it were used to create the fog and lighting effects in the Arcadia section, where you have to kill off the trees.

There were also going to be little men operating the machinery behind those Pipe-Mania style mini-games, the idea being that you're connecting the pipes to feed Adam to the mutated creatures trapped inside the contraption. Now that's just plain weird.

We've also learnt that an insect-based ecology and helpful Nav-Bot to aid you in getting around Rapture were also considered for inclusion in BioShock, but ultimately binned.

We have to say, we'd particularly like to see the little machine gremlins make an appearance in BioShock 2. Pretty please?

Be sure to check out the list in full on Irrational's site.

Hmm. I think cutting the pressure system was risky, as it could have made the game either much better, or much worse. Should be a brilliant game though

A Nav-bot would have been nice, however. The best thing about Bioshock was the atmosphere and the unique situations you could find yourself in. I just hope Irrational make the game at least half as good as the original, as well as the multiplayer being good enough to play more than once

Anyone else think this game will be as epic as Mass Effect 2?

Guys, I'm pretty sure they're talking about BioShock, not BioShock 2. So don't say you can't wait for this game. : P

Interesting features they considered. I still loved Bioshock 1 and I hope 2 will be a blast.

@ #6 x360a has posted this under Bioshock 2 so I would say it is meant for Bio2 rather then 1. The info on the right hand side tells this anyway.

Either way Bioshock was the best game I feel I have played and I'm hoping 2 will be as good if not better.

Guys - we are talking about the first BioShock here. Just to clear that up. :)
Who knows whether or not remnants of some of these ideas will end up in the sequel though?

@#8 It *IS* The original bioshock. Just read the article. Its also obvious from the first line. They are both being made by different devs.

I see that it is on about the original Bioshock but posted under Bioshock 2 anyway.

I would have liked the effect, but as far as gameplay goes it seems unnecessary.

All of that sounded really intresting but it is understandable that they took it out. A shame though...

Don't know where will get the time to play all these great games, Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII, Dead Rising 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Just Cause 2, Aliens vs Predator, Lost Planet 2, Red Dead Redemption, Dante's Inferno (Such a Hard Life) :-)

who are the complete idiots that have already gave it a game rating of 60? i know it evens out, but just the same rating the game shouldn't be allowed until it's released? lol

Interesting but, I think they made the right choice to drop the pressure system. Setting the mood was an integral part of what made BioShock such a great game to play.

Whatever makes the game run more smoothly without taking away too much gameplay I have no problem with it.

NOTE TO AUTHOR: Keep in mind changing the atmospheric pressure makes no sense. It is completely negligible compared to the ocean pressure at that depth. That is what you must have meant, or the post by the developer was wrong.

@#23 - atmospheric pressure can be altered in an internal, sealed environment. the ocean pressure would only matter if you're in the ocean, not safely inside rapture!

So their new idea to generate buzz for Bioshock is to talk about things that won't be in the game? That's a great idea!

Idiots.

Considering how small the world of Rapture is when you take a step back and look at it, this is pathetic. Metroid Prime 2, dipshits. Play it and then tell me that the same room rendered twice can't hold a different atmosphere (both physical and mood-wise).

Actually I'll just go right off and say that the Metroid Trilogy put this game (and other action/exploration games) to shame.

Step it up, 2K, did you really think talking about shit that got cut would win people over?
