Activision Lapses on Marvel Ultimate Alliance Licenses; DLC No Longer Available
Written Wednesday, January 20, 2010 By Alan Pettit

Without giving its consumer (aka us) any notice, Activision has decided not to renew its licenses with Marvel Comics for the use of their characters in downloadable content. This includes the Hero and Villain packs from Marvel Ultimate Alliance, as well as the Character Pack and Juggernaut download for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.  All of the content has now been pulled from the marketplace. Could this be a reaction to poor sales and review scores for MUA2? Perhaps, but it's still a pretty crappy move. In a somewhat more classy move however, the trailer for the DLC you can no longer get it still up! Smooth, Activision. Real smooth.

Responding to criticism, Activision claims the content was a "limited time offer" that was always set to expire on December 31st, 2009. Guess they forgot to mention that when it was offered in the first place... and when they decided to include extra achievements tied to the content. If you hadn't already purchased the content and were planning on picking up MUA2, you can now plan on maxing out at 1000/1250.

However, MUA1 still has the option of getting a copy of the "Gold" version of the game at retail which includes all the DLC on disc. Perhaps Activision will offer something similar for MUA2 as well, but remember the poor sales and review scores I mentioned? That might hinder those chances a bit. We'll of course post news if that changes in the future.

Great, another entry into the list of reasons it would be better if DLC didn't have achievements. Really wish I had bought this DLC when I had the chance, but was waiting for it to be a DotW, just like how I got the DLC for the first game.

@#5 (sljag146)
This is Activisions fault, they are the ones that decided not to renew their licenses. If the reason they didn't renew them is because Disney was asking for too much money then yes, it is Disneys fault, but it's a lot more likely that this is just Activision being cheap jerks and not wanting to blow money on a game that didn't sell well.

Sorry for the double post, but I just thought of something. Activision missed a huge opportunity with this. If they had announced it advance that they were going to be pulling the DLC from the marketplace then they probably would have had a lot of sales due to people wanting to get it before it's gone. I know if I knew about this in advance then I would have picked up the MUA2 DLC. Guess Activision is not only a bunch of jerks, but they are also idiots.

agree'd with #13, if they would have given a week or 2 notice, and actually announced it was getting pulled, it would have had pretty big sales.

But to be honest, there is nothing anywhere that says once something is on the marketplace, that it will be there forever. If you wanted it, you should have bought it when it came out.

This is the most fucking retarded thing I've seen in weeks. Personally I think that this is a sign of something much larger at work. Perhaps Disney is planning a complete overhaul of all the Marvel games? Check the article on IGN where Activision admits they've done a poor job on all previous Spiderman games. Perhaps Disney is demanding quality???

Traded this in a few month ago with the intention to rebuy it when it went down in price. But now that I won't be able to fully complete it, I won't bother now. I wonder if Activision will start removing some of it's Guitar Hero DLC.

Of course this isn't the first time I have seen some marketplace content removed. I know some of the earlier arcade games (Double Dragon, Contra) have been removed.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 @ 01:29:46 AM

@#20 So if your 360 dies, you are going to get a new Hard Drive and have to re-download all the stuff you had on it already? If you're that dumb, then you deserve to have the DLC taken from you.

BTW, that isn't an issue, cause the DLC is still showing in your download history. Nice of you to have checked before you made the post.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 @ 01:36:08 AM

I feel slightly more intelligent for buying what I, at the time, thought to be an idiotic move, spending 10 dollars on that DLC. Oh well, now me and my real life friends are some of the lucky few who can actually max out this game. But I do agree, this is a complete bull shit move. If they had announced that this would be limited edition content, I would understand. But making poor business choices, inadvertently punishing the consumers, then covering it up with the notion of the license meaningfully expiring is truly underhanded.

It is now official. Activision no longer has any game that I want to purchase. Perhaps a very cheap used copy of Guitar Hero 2 or 3, but Activision sees none of that cash. I almost didn't think the boycott would stick. Currently boycotting Activision for for their decision to let their Sierra properties (King's Quest, Quest for Glory) languish, forgotten in the depths of liscencing purgatory. At least Marvel doesn't have to suffer for the boycott now.

LOL! At #12 - I totally agree with you on that. It's funny too; in a recent interview with GameInformer Bobby Kotick actually waxes nostalgic about some of the underhanded, unethical business practices he engaged in while he was building Activision into a financial juggernaut (best part is that he talks about it as if it's a good thing - to be admired).
Bobby Kotick is a total douche.
Definitely won't buy MUA2 now - ever.
And will boycott pretty much any Activision/EA games (EA also with recent douche moves like shutting down a bunch of online servers) - Some people say that's ludicrous, but it's not - I can buy or NOT buy any game I want. And I refuse to support Activision or EA any longer. So there.

@Anyone hoping for a Gold edition of MUA2:

You don't seem to get it, if they no longer have the license, then they no longer have the license. It's not like they can pull it from the marketplace then still release it on disc. What I am wondering is if they lost the Marvel license entirely or if it was just the license for the characters in the DLC. If it was the Marvel license entirely then they will probably discontinue both games, meaning that the used prices may go up and it will become difficult to find either MUA new.

There is still hope that Disney/Marvel will do something with the game, and possibly relist the DLC at a later date. I know Disney used to have their own game developer (Buena Vista Interactive), but I don't know if they still do or not. If they do then they m

It won't leave you with 1000/1250 if you never downloaded the DLC. The GS stays at the 1000 cap until you buy the DLC package. So the only people really in a bind are those that downloaded the DLC and had it corrupt on them since they can't download it again. They are the only people that will be perpetually stuck somewhere between 1000 and 1250.

I think the DLC should be put back up for a limited time again so that we can download it. Its fine if they wanna take it off, but they should give us a noticed before doing so. Put it up for say, a week. Those who really want it can buy it, those who dont care wont. Activision would likely get some extra money they probably wouldn't have got previously. Everybody wins.

I wrote the company and suggest others do the same. It might not do much good, but you never know if others show support.

I dont really think its activisions fault guys. Disney now owns the rights to the marvel stuff and probably didnt want to pay disney a crapload of money to keep it or there was something written in the contract with marvel, now disney, and they are just letting it go instead of dealing with legal stuff.

Thats Bull$%&#

I was looking forward to this game like crazy and when it came out I was nothing but disappointed. Either way, I still planned on picking up the DLC when/ if it ever went on sale. This obviously is not the case.

So as if I already wasn't pissed enough with Activision... thanks.

I received a response to the email I sent to activision:

Response (Matt Brannon) - 01/20/2010 09:43 AM
Hello,

We are currently still investigating why this has happened. As to when or if the DLC will be reposted, we are not sure at this time. You can keep up to date on the latest news about this game by visiting the official game site at http://marvelultimatealliance.marvel.com/

"Investigating", huh? Yeah, that's really believable.

I just realized, I downloaded the MUA1 DLC. Sweet.

it is totally out of order i got mua2 game for christmas off the wife and kids and never even knew about any DLC until it was to late. Am pissed right off just knowing that you could of got it but now cant. Just would of been nice to of had the chance to get hold of it but never had the oppertunity guess the people at activision never thought of the people that would get the game after the deadline witch is the most stupidest thing i have ever heard of cause they pull the dlc but still think it is ok to sell the game to people after it has been pulled what a joke...............

It doesn't matter to me. I completed it before the DLC came out so it still counts as completed for me and only says 50 of 50 achievements...not 50 of 60. So...don't care.

If you downloaded the DLC before it went poof you shouldn't have any problems using it unless it becomes corrupted somehow. I've played MUA2 since the DLC vanished and still had access to the DLC characters and sim missions.

I was discussing this with a friend today and we got to thinking.... why would a lapse in the license affect content already made? I would think that it would just mean that they couldn't make any new content or games.

We should get a class action lawsuit going against the parties responsible for screwing people out of money and lying to us.
