Activision Lapses on Marvel Ultimate Alliance Licenses; DLC No Longer Available
Written Wednesday, January 20, 2010 By Alan Pettit
View author's profile

Without giving its consumer (aka us) any notice, Activision has decided not to renew its licenses with Marvel Comics for the use of their characters in downloadable content. This includes the Hero and Villain packs from Marvel Ultimate Alliance, as well as the Character Pack and Juggernaut download for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.  All of the content has now been pulled from the marketplace. Could this be a reaction to poor sales and review scores for MUA2? Perhaps, but it's still a pretty crappy move. In a somewhat more classy move however, the trailer for the DLC you can no longer get it still up! Smooth, Activision. Real smooth.

Responding to criticism, Activision claims the content was a "limited time offer" that was always set to expire on December 31st, 2009. Guess they forgot to mention that when it was offered in the first place... and when they decided to include extra achievements tied to the content. If you hadn't already purchased the content and were planning on picking up MUA2, you can now plan on maxing out at 1000/1250.

However, MUA1 still has the option of getting a copy of the "Gold" version of the game at retail which includes all the DLC on disc. Perhaps Activision will offer something similar for MUA2 as well, but remember the poor sales and review scores I mentioned? That might hinder those chances a bit. We'll of course post news if that changes in the future.

Great, another entry into the list of reasons it would be better if DLC didn't have achievements. Really wish I had bought this DLC when I had the chance, but was waiting for it to be a DotW, just like how I got the DLC for the first game.

@#5 (sljag146)
This is Activisions fault, they are the ones that decided not to renew their licenses. If the reason they didn't renew them is because Disney was asking for too much money then yes, it is Disneys fault, but it's a lot more likely that this is just Activision being cheap jerks and not wanting to blow money on a game that didn't sell well.

Sorry for the double post, but I just thought of something. Activision missed a huge opportunity with this. If they had announced it advance that they were going to be pulling the DLC from the marketplace then they probably would have had a lot of sales due to people wanting to get it before it's gone. I know if I knew about this in advance then I would have picked up the MUA2 DLC. Guess Activision is not only a bunch of jerks, but they are also idiots.

agree'd with #13, if they would have given a week or 2 notice, and actually announced it was getting pulled, it would have had pretty big sales.

But to be honest, there is nothing anywhere that says once something is on the marketplace, that it will be there forever. If you wanted it, you should have bought it when it came out.

@16 - so if your 360 dies and you get a new one, its too bad, so sad, you can't get back something you purchased?

You know what this means - its off to pirate websites to find someone with it for download.

So if they take MUA2's DLC down, how come games from launch have DLC still up there? I am dissapoint...

@20, finding that stuff is easy now, microsoft lit a powderkeg when then banned everybody during november. You can get anything off the marketplace for free now, its ridiculous

This is the most fucking retarded thing I've seen in weeks. Personally I think that this is a sign of something much larger at work. Perhaps Disney is planning a complete overhaul of all the Marvel games? Check the article on IGN where Activision admits they've done a poor job on all previous Spiderman games. Perhaps Disney is demanding quality???

Traded this in a few month ago with the intention to rebuy it when it went down in price. But now that I won't be able to fully complete it, I won't bother now. I wonder if Activision will start removing some of it's Guitar Hero DLC.

Of course this isn't the first time I have seen some marketplace content removed. I know some of the earlier arcade games (Double Dragon, Contra) have been removed.

@#20 So if your 360 dies, you are going to get a new Hard Drive and have to re-download all the stuff you had on it already? If you're that dumb, then you deserve to have the DLC taken from you.

BTW, that isn't an issue, cause the DLC is still showing in your download history. Nice of you to have checked before you made the post.

I feel slightly more intelligent for buying what I, at the time, thought to be an idiotic move, spending 10 dollars on that DLC. Oh well, now me and my real life friends are some of the lucky few who can actually max out this game. But I do agree, this is a complete bull shit move. If they had announced that this would be limited edition content, I would understand. But making poor business choices, inadvertently punishing the consumers, then covering it up with the notion of the license meaningfully expiring is truly underhanded.

And I personally didn't know you could download something you'd already bought to a new hard drive. Makes sense now that I think about it. Either way, dick move, Activision. Dick move.

It is now official. Activision no longer has any game that I want to purchase. Perhaps a very cheap used copy of Guitar Hero 2 or 3, but Activision sees none of that cash. I almost didn't think the boycott would stick. Currently boycotting Activision for for their decision to let their Sierra properties (King's Quest, Quest for Glory) languish, forgotten in the depths of liscencing purgatory. At least Marvel doesn't have to suffer for the boycott now.

It seem that you can get the achievements for mua2 without buying the dlc because I've never bought it but my cousin did and he came over with his memory card and we got all the dlc achievements for me.

I'm not sure however if the free dlc that your supposed to get so your friend can use the new characters is still available or needed.

Still a dick move on Activisions part

I'm hoping for a "gold" version. That way, I can rent it, spend two hours getting eight achievements, and then sell the original game! Score!

On the whole, though, this was pure bullshit. Thanks for ruining my (potential) perfect GamerScore for this game, Activision.

LOL! At #12 - I totally agree with you on that. It's funny too; in a recent interview with GameInformer Bobby Kotick actually waxes nostalgic about some of the underhanded, unethical business practices he engaged in while he was building Activision into a financial juggernaut (best part is that he talks about it as if it's a good thing - to be admired).
Bobby Kotick is a total douche.
Definitely won't buy MUA2 now - ever.
And will boycott pretty much any Activision/EA games (EA also with recent douche moves like shutting down a bunch of online servers) - Some people say that's ludicrous, but it's not - I can buy or NOT buy any game I want. And I refuse to support Activision or EA any longer. So there.

I have all the DLC. I don't know why everyone thought MUA2 was such a terrible game. Maybe because it was more of the same and with less characters and less unique "bonus" dialog/voice acting?

Either way, I thought it was a sweet game.

This is absolute bullshit... The whole time I waited for a deal of the week, boy was that worthless. Good job Activision, atleast I know I no longer have to put up $60 for your Ultimate Alliance games anymore.

Yeah, this is a bit ridiculous. I have MUA1, but I haven't started it yet, got it in the 360 bundle a year or two ago with Forza 2, guess I won't play it now that I can't complete.

@70 How is this like EA shutting down servers? EA shutting down servers for old games is nothing new (though I admit Madden '09 was an odd choice) and at least they let people know that the servers were going to be shut down.

@Anyone hoping for a Gold edition of MUA2:

You don't seem to get it, if they no longer have the license, then they no longer have the license. It's not like they can pull it from the marketplace then still release it on disc. What I am wondering is if they lost the Marvel license entirely or if it was just the license for the characters in the DLC. If it was the Marvel license entirely then they will probably discontinue both games, meaning that the used prices may go up and it will become difficult to find either MUA new.

There is still hope that Disney/Marvel will do something with the game, and possibly relist the DLC at a later date. I know Disney used to have their own game developer (Buena Vista Interactive), but I don't know if they still do or not. If they do then they m

It won't leave you with 1000/1250 if you never downloaded the DLC. The GS stays at the 1000 cap until you buy the DLC package. So the only people really in a bind are those that downloaded the DLC and had it corrupt on them since they can't download it again. They are the only people that will be perpetually stuck somewhere between 1000 and 1250.

Dayum. Thought that they were only doing that with PS3, and thought we got lucky over here. Guess not...
Well, at least I got it already and I can now be sure to sell the sucker when I finish the last three or four achievements.
Freakin' Activision.

Probably this site needs a list of games you can't complete anymore, so if u go shopping to pick up some older games 4 cheap u could look up here first whichs games not 2 buy if u care about completion what I guess most people on this site do.

That really pisses me off. I loved the first game and the second game wasnt that bad at all. Im actually sad not pissed. For the second game it did sound over priced for what you get. That is why I waited to buy it but now missed the boat. :(

For those complaining about the DLC for a comic book based game being taken down before achieve-ing 100%, trying having a comic book based game that'll NEVER have its DLC released to 100% it (Hellboy:Science of Evil) Glad I have the DLC for MUA1 though as I've got one or two achievements left to grab on that, but the DLC for MUA2 being up for so little time is crazy...

Seems like a lot of people bought this terrible game, and are now dissapointed they can't spend more on it. They probably did people a favour, lest they were tempted to get this game or the DLC in the future.

I think the DLC should be put back up for a limited time again so that we can download it. Its fine if they wanna take it off, but they should give us a noticed before doing so. Put it up for say, a week. Those who really want it can buy it, those who dont care wont. Activision would likely get some extra money they probably wouldn't have got previously. Everybody wins.

I wrote the company and suggest others do the same. It might not do much good, but you never know if others show support.

I dont really think its activisions fault guys. Disney now owns the rights to the marvel stuff and probably didnt want to pay disney a crapload of money to keep it or there was something written in the contract with marvel, now disney, and they are just letting it go instead of dealing with legal stuff.

I was looking forward to this game like crazy and when it came out I was nothing but disappointed. Either way, I still planned on picking up the DLC when/ if it ever went on sale. This obviously is not the case.

So as if I already wasn't pissed enough with Activision... thanks.

Response (Matt Brannon) - 01/20/2010 09:43 AM
Hello,

We are currently still investigating why this has happened. As to when or if the DLC will be reposted, we are not sure at this time. You can keep up to date on the latest news about this game by visiting the official game site at http://marvelultimatealliance.marvel.com/

it is totally out of order i got mua2 game for christmas off the wife and kids and never even knew about any DLC until it was to late. Am pissed right off just knowing that you could of got it but now cant. Just would of been nice to of had the chance to get hold of it but never had the oppertunity guess the people at activision never thought of the people that would get the game after the deadline witch is the most stupidest thing i have ever heard of cause they pull the dlc but still think it is ok to sell the game to people after it has been pulled what a joke...............

It doesn't matter to me. I completed it before the DLC came out so it still counts as completed for me and only says 50 of 50 achievements...not 50 of 60. So...don't care.

If you downloaded the DLC before it went poof you shouldn't have any problems using it unless it becomes corrupted somehow. I've played MUA2 since the DLC vanished and still had access to the DLC characters and sim missions.

I was discussing this with a friend today and we got to thinking.... why would a lapse in the license affect content already made? I would think that it would just mean that they couldn't make any new content or games.

Msg to all gamers. Enough is enough already. Maybe its time we all band together and stop supporting companies like Activision. We all agree that they pulling the MUA dlc's wasnt only fucked up but without notice just drew the line on all lvls. Here it is a good friend of mine on xbl just picked up the game yesterday and we were going to run this game together and comes to find out that no dlc are available. He cant even play with me because the patch for xbl was removed also so he is screwed not being able to get the dlc. Enough is enough. Maybe its time to pass the word and have everyone not buy any activision games for an entire yr and maybe they will get the point that us gamers mean business.

Just one more thing to add. Being that Guitar Hero is one of Activision biggest hits we should start there. Pass the word because there is millions of users on this site and get the word around. Purchase nothing from activision for an entire yr. The the fuckers suffer
