Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

Splinter Cell: Conviction Delay Is To Allow For More Polish
Written Thursday, January 14, 2010 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

Whilst it's crystal clear that Ubisoft aren't having the greatest year financially - despite Assassin's Creed 2 being a big seller - the reasons behind Splinter Cell: Conviction's delay yesterday were on the other end of the scale and were far from clear.

It was either one of two things though: to release in a better release window away from big hitters like Heavy Rain, Aliens vs. Predator and Bioshock 2, or to add more polish.

A Ubisoft representative today told Eurogamer that the delay was down to the game needing "a bit more polish." Furthermore they added, "The game looks brilliant, but we want it to be awesome."

Deja vu anyone? Splinter Cell: Forever Conviction is now slated for an April release.

Delay's have never bothered me, just means more time to focus on the game. I'd rather have a perfect Splinter Cell that takes years to come out, than a rushed, poor game.

I love the Forever mention there!

made me smile.

The delay is not in fear of any or all of those games as SC will outsell them all, as both Ubi and MS have a big marketing push planned.

It is due to Ubi moving it to the start of the next fiscal year.

With the 3rd party software collapse on the wii and DS expect all publishers to move back to the hardcore.

EA have already done it, Sega mentioned it too

good news I say

I don't mind the delay, gives me plenty of time to work on the games I've got sitting on the back burner. But I will be expecting something special from this one now as they have said that they are upping the quality. Collector's Edition is ordered. :D

Games Industry fact: Games that take over 2 years work are often rubbish.

Not saying Conviction will be, I personally cannot wait, best game of 010 for me & it's not even out yet (yes I'm that much of a Splinter Cell fanboy).

Disappointed it won't be out next month, let down cause it was going to be a bday gift (thought a month late) but at least Mass Effect 2 will be out 5 days after said bday, hurrah, should keep my nerves on edge til Conviction finally comes out.

Game delays tend not to bother me. I remember old Splinter Cell games so I decided I better get back into them. Will casually pick this one up and hope it too kill a far bit of my time ;D. Besides, I like Ubi. Never had anything against them :).

Well this game has been delayed and hyped for soo long that I can't say I am surprised. However Batman AA did get delayed from June 09 to Sept 09 and that game was awesome.

I hope the extra polish makes the game worth this looooong wait.

Well at least it Ubi didnt pull a "Alpha Protocal" and not really tell anyone they were pushing it back, only to find out when i went to get it that it did on its release date. But still....... for them to say they need more "polishing" this close to release is really really gay.

I actually am happy of that cuz I had a huge list of games coming one after another. And it does need a lot of polishing. In CES 2010 I saw that they showed some gameplay footage and I saw some glitches w/ the AI when your character beats them down. Although I was a bit desperate to get it I have Mass Effect 2 and Just Cause 2 to fit the bill while I wait for SC:C :D

A 2 month delay isn't a bad thing. The game is essentially finished, they're just polishing it (which is never bad). It's not like it's being put on hiatus or cancelled or anything. Remember that Splinter Cell is one of Ubisoft's flagship franchises.

Ah well. Personally I thought this was an early april fools joke as gamestop has it slated for an April 1st release, guess I was wrong. But anyways the game already looks awesome, hope they get it done. A game can never have too much polish...err, right?

I dont mind that they take time to polish the game (so we get the best game possible). I just don't like how they get everyones hopes up for a certain date then delay it. I just wish ubisoft would be a little more serious about their release dates. FF13s release date was announced about a year ago and its on pace to come out on time.

this game will probably just end up being one of those games that keeps getting delayed.
the more delays the more it will be hyped up. this probably means people will be dissapointed.
my moneys going to mass effect 2, bioshock 2 and battlefield: bad company 2 now.

I'm all for more polish. Course this will be my first Splinter Cell game, so I'm not a fan of the series yet. And thus I'm not as hungry for the game as previous players of the series are.

The longer they delay, the more hype will grow. Can they live up to it now? "Perfect" is a line, somewhere before it is "Failure", and after the line is "Failure" again. If you work too much to get to "Perfect" and carry on working, you'll cross that line and end up back in "Failure". People strive to make things better than they need to be, which can have consequences.

Or, "Just release the frickin' game!". And, what is with game adverts playing crappy mainstream music? Are original soundtracks obsolete now? I dunno, Bayonetta's advert came on...

and every time i hear more about this game, i want it even more.

we got the new gameinformers at work today, and there is a 4 page article about SC: Conviction, its quite a good read!

@ 26 - Yes. Too Human.

There has to be a right balance, too soon & you get under developed games (movie games). Over stretched games at you get bad games like Too Human and Perfect Dark Zero.

If it's in development for so long it will most often turn out bad. Technology is moving forward all the time, if the game is built up to meet standards that were at launch of 360 for example, and they kept delaying it to "polish" it, eventually they would stumble into the time frame that Gears of War came out; chances are the graphics wouldn't be up to scratch and you would end up with something that looks like Avatar in comparison to Gears of War (Avatar the easiest 1k game ever not the master piece movie).

You think that games pumped out every year like CoD are crap? Yeah, the obvious answ

>continued...
Yeah, the obvious answer, it's not one year in development, it's two. In CoD's case they have 2 massive teams, in fact two massive seperate companies; Infinity Ward & Treyarch. Once one CoD is released (CoD4 for eg) they immediately start work on another a few weeks later (CoD6).

Get your facts straight, oh and also my info comes from the GI itself & people who work in it, my tutor was after all a part of Evo Studies ;)

Well RazgriX FX they have to polish because they are working on a heavily modified unreal engine 2.5, while gears and others use 3.0,

That adds to the "polish"

But whats with games not meeting their developments, you would think with all of this publicity, within the last week we got 5 to 7 splinter cell updates, with Codeofconviction.com and other viral advertising mediums,

One would think that this game was nearly done.

Pandemic kept saying Mercenaries 2 needed polish and kept pushing the game back. At some point, the developer cuts their losses and pushes the game out. You may not want to buy this in the first month or so, let other people find the problems.

I've had thie collector's edition pre-ordered for some time now, but the delay is okay. At least it won't be like Wolfenstein where we had to wait a few months for an update to make the single player campaign finishable, and the MP worth playing.
Peace.

@ #9

You are correct, it was originally slated for November 2008.

Look, there is nothing worse than getting a game home you have been waiting ages for, and it ends up disappointing somehow, even if it is in the smallest detail.

If they are committed to making the best game possible, and that is going to take a couple more months, so be it. I love Splinter Cell, and if two more months means a better game, I'm ok with that.

I mean c'mon, it's not like there aren't enough titles to tide us over until this gets released is it! All the moaners should really take a chill pill.
