So it appears the Splinter Cell website was “hacked” recently... and by hacked, I mean altered by the Ubisoft team as some sort of viral marketing... which we’re more than comfortable with. The “hack” – I promise that’s the last time I’ll use quotation marks for the word hack – gave little away to start with other than its Russian origin, and essentially required a password to get to the nitty gritty. After trying a few combinations this afternoon, we were able to unlock the site and get a little more inside information on the upcoming Conviction. Get ready to be schooled! Bear in mind that all the info below found on the site are Russian to English translations, so the English may seem a little broken, but the underlying sentiment makes sense. Where it doesn’t, I changed a few grammatical peculiars to make it clearer. After inserting the password – which was found out by entering the place name of the co-ordinates that were displayed on the opening page of SplinterCell.com into GoogleMaps – you are presented with 5 options in the main menu; information, dossiers, weapons, safety, and intelligence. Each section contains information from the game including characters, weapons, a little CCTV footage, numerous factions and a little sub-plot. Whilst it doesn't really tell us much, it does give us an indication as to the universe we're going to be thrown into. This chap called Reed is now running the Splinter Cell unit, with a new operative called Archer being the man on the ground. This Russian group - who hacked the website - make light of this new firm, Black Arrow (a private military company), and the "dishonest" Americans, whilst also mentioning weapons of mass destruction - nuclear? Knowing Splinter Cell, probably. Other than the new weapons - where's the SC-20K!? - the other thing that really caught our eye was the surveillance footage. Obviously, some of these levels are set in Russia, but the question must arise, are they from the single player, or the multiplayer? They seem to cry Spies vs Mercs to me... but like I say, purely speculation. So we have a plot that involves these Russian hackers, some Russian agency with a name translating to "Crows", Third Echelon and this private millitary contractor, Black Arrow. Fisher is involved as usual, but at no point is it clear which side he's batting for.
