Xbox 360 Dashboard Twitter Preview - Vid, Screens & Info

Oh Twitter, how you’ve invaded our lives at the drop of a hat, and now, you want to invade our consoles!? We’ll have none of it. Okay, we will, but only if you’re any good... and that, you are not.

I’ll kick off the fall update previews with a look at one of the service’s sour points; Twitter. Simply put, it just doesn’t work. Sure, you can tweet from your dashboard now, but unless you own a chatpad or a USB keyboard, Twitter will be gathering virtual dust the moment it's released to the masses. The inability to “tweet” anywhere on your console is surely a missed opportunity as the application can only be used from the confines of the dashboard - no tweeting mid game about that sick headshot.

It isn't the dashboard issue that majorly disappoints us though, not being able to follow links, use TwitPic or any of the fun stuff that makes Twitter what it is, makes it seem half assed and not worth the effort. Okay your avatar does dance when you tweet, you can retweet with the click of a button, but in all seriousness, it lacks the basics that an iPhone app like EchoFon can offer you, so you have to question who will use it?

Throw in the fact that the application is decidingly sluggish, you can only view the last 50 updates in your news feed, and you can only view the last 25 updates on someone else's profile, and it seems like half measures all round.

It seems like Microsoft saw Twitter becoming so widespread that they put it in without knowing why it works so much... accessibility and networking. So sticking people in one spot and nailing them down there doesn't have the freedom we wished the application would have. Will we use it again? Probably not.

Things do get a hell of a lot better with the update, so stick around for our impressions on them later on today.

The Preview Program update e-mails for wave 1 are going out this week. If you haven’t signed up, check out the details here. The full update is coming soon. No specific date has been named yet, although November 17th is a good shout.

	Twitter is pointless...its a whole site revolving around nothing but status updates...Myspace and Facebook already have that, plus way more...I honestly don't even see how this site became popular.

	Twitter is clutter free, micro blogging. If you go onto Facebook, you have a bombardment of links, images, and other assorted stuff you quite frankly don't need to see when you just want to update your status. You go onto Twitter, and it's essentially all text, fast loading, concise and straight to the point. It's easy to load on a Mobile, and it's accessible for those who need to get a point across, with out the other stuff that comes with Social Networking Sites (Myspace/Facebook/Bebo etc). ~Bryce

	Im not the first and im definetly not gona be the last to say this but Twitter is so useless and pointless facebook and myspace do the same as well as much more. The thing that is the most annoying about this is that many people who dont need or want this are having it forced down their throats by microsoft which in turn means everyones dashboard is now going to be clutterd up even more with useless crap

	@20 - The dashboard with the update is far from cluttered... There are like 9 channels... My Xbox, Spotlight, My Community, Inside Xbox, Friends, Music, Videos and Games. It's there if you want to use it, nobody is twisting your arm if you don't. Same as Facebook, same as Last FM, same as Sky, same as Halo Waypoint... it's all free. You don't complain the internet is cluttered with billions of sites do you? You just steer clear of them and do what you want.

	Great, more useless garbage to clutter up my dash. Noone cares what you tweet or your facebook status. Stop being nerds and go outside and make real friends in real life. Don't get me wrong, I play games like it's going out of style, but I have a life, and most normal people don't mess with the social networking garbage. So what you have 1 a million friends on Facebook, you want a cookie? I bet if you called one of those "friends" and asked for help. they would tell you to stick it.

	I agree with #26, I don't see the point to complaining, even if they all suck, they're all free so who cares, if you don't like it don't use it, if anyone has EVER learned anything from Rock Band's weekly DLC comments, it's that NO ONE GIVES A SHIT about anyone's opinion. 	@28; You're telling people to go outside, and get a life, yet you're on a video game website, posting a comment? Irony much? The fact is, I walk a lot, I commute 80 minutes to College, 80 minutes back, that's a lot of down time on the train, plus when I am walking around. If I can jump on the internet via my mobile, which I do, I can have a conversation with someone via Facebook comments, and pass the time. This stuff is the way the world is turning. People are getting connected in more and more ways, and this Xbox 360 Update proves it. It's not going to clutter your precious dashboad, and to be honest, how often do you go into the Game Marketplace tab? Or any of them? You spend most of your time in a game. You wont notice it. Get over it. Microsoft is giving us something

	Drjft has the best common sense among you guys. Also, if you are afraid that your dashborad will be "cluttered," you guys need to stop your complaining and deal with it. If you don't like it, they invented the thumbstick to go UP or DOWN so you could bypass the 'My Community' tab that is being added...

	I use twitter occassionally... But There ultimately isnt that much use in having it intergrated into XBLA... Just more evidence of Microsoft trying to take over the world, one Web-company at a time... This isnt necesarily a bad update, but it is a little pointless to a good bunch of people, but as long as a couple get some use out of it, I guess its good.
