The Brink Mega Interview, Episode 4: Achievements

The Brink Mega Interview, Episode 4: Achievements
Written Friday, October 02, 2009 by Dan Webb

It’s been a long journey. We’ve made some friends. Made a few enemies, but at the end of the day we’ve all come out the other side as much better people. Of course you’ve probably guessed that this signals the end of the Brink mega interview. Well, you probably guessed that by the headline, which renders my opening segue completely and utterly useless. Oh well, it did its job. Today’s episode looks at our forte, achievements. Can I get an amen? No? Oh.

We literally talk everything achievements and it’s not just confined to Brink. We talk multiplayer achievements, whether enough publishers/developers take them seriously and whether that attitude will change, and much more. The interview ironically ends as we talk about how awesome Infinity Ward are on the same day they’ve seemingly done it again. Huzzah. It’s also fantastic to see developers sharing the same passion as us - apparently, they are gamers as well *shock horror* What’s even better is that they use our site to feed their addiction *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

Without further ado ladies and gentlemen, Richard Ham and episode 4 of the Brink mega interview.

Well it's not gameplay footage, but achievement talk will do. Had some great things to say about achievements and it was nice to hear a developers point of view on them (who is also a gamer). I hope it's a LOT like Shadowrun, because I liked that game a lot. I wish it would of had more of a following but what can you do.

I love the idea of having achievements that can be done single player or multiplayer. Keeps those afraid of multiplayer achieves interested. Also, great interview. Would like to see more of these.

Cool guy, down to earth. Made me more interested in this game, and I'm liking the idea of achievements being obtainable in both single and multiplayer. But that eye in the background was creeping me out :$

I wish there was a gameplay video, great interview other than that though. Nice to see a developer with a passion for games.

I'm not too sure about this game. It's gonna be using an old engine so iduno. Hopefully they have upgraded it.

They better not delay the pc version like all other games that do. And also about infinity ward achievements, they put the achievements for singleplayer cuz a lot of ppl actually just skip the singleplayer and go staright to multiplayer once they get the game. So ya I think the reason they do that is cuz so ppl actually go and play the singleplayer also. they need to have a storyline for games in order for the consumers to keep buying them cuz if no one is familiar with the singleplayer then a lot of ppl won't get the next cod game cuz all they did was play the multiaplyer and it's not like they change the multiplayer so drastically that consumers would actually buy the nexxt game for that. well at leeast not all of themn.

@13 I think they don't put online achievements because they wan't people to enjoy the online experience, because most of the time when there is online achevements, everybody will try to boost them or just focus on doing something but when there is no online achievements you will only try to have fun, and that's what they wan't.

@16 not all multiplayer achievements require boosting, get 10000 kills is alot easier just playing it, play a certain amount of games, reach top rank etc... Multiplayer achievements like kill 2 people with 1 sniper bullet or kill 3 or more people with a grenade are the multiplayer achievements that suck and people start boosting. Theres no reason not to have a mixture of MP and single player achievements in every game if they are done right. IMO multiplayer achievements are more prestigous and harder to get, thats why I enjoy MP achievements, that and I hate playing by myself.

I think this guy shows us something of what a lot of developers are starting to do: finally take achievements seriously and put some EFFORT into them! Fable II had an absolutely fantastic list! And I'm hoping the same goes for BRINK. As for Infinity Ward, he's right, you can't say anything bad about those guys, they're another studio that just GETS it. They know how to craft an FPS as though it were a damn Renaissance era statue, but they also understand what the point of the achievement system is and they utilize it to the benefit of not just the players, but to themselves! Bravo on the interview Webb.

#17: I love achievements but hate multiplayer, so I will boost every possible ones. I do try not to bother other players when I do these so if the achieves can be done in player / private matches I will just do with friends. In my opinion, there is no multiplayer achievement that will not lead to boosting and if they must be done in a public room, it definitely hurts the legit players.

Even your example of 10,000 kill if it must be done in ranked like Gears of War, if it is a boosting session, then whoever outside of the group joins will definitely be negatively impacted, because he will be kicked and/or friendly killed. (At least that's what I'd do if given half the chance in a boosting session lol)

Cool interview, that guy seems really cool, and definitely sees things from a gamers perspective, not just the developers'. Haven't really heard much about this game, but now my interest is piqued. Which is odd because he barely talked about the game itself at all.

@26 That actually hurts the players like me more than anything. The players who like MP achievements, who play for fun and the achieves are just a bonus if I get them. IMO the whole achievement system should let be redone and let people choose if they want the achievements to be in single player only or with multiplayer, make 2 lists and let the people choose which list they want. And just get rid of completion %, i'm tired of hearing people complain about it, just get rid of it.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
