L4D 1 DLC Pricing Down to MS, Not Valve

L4D 1 DLC Pricing Down to MS, Not Valve
Written Wednesday, September 09, 2009 by Dan Webb

This month Left 4 Dead 1's Crash Course will hit the Xbox Live Marketplace for 560 Microsoft points, whereas PC owners of the game will be able to download it for free. Speaking to Eurogamer, Valve's Chet Faliszek speaks out regarding the L4D 1 DLC pricing issues that have raised concern amongst the 360 community.

Faliszek says, "we own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform. They wanted to make sure there's an economy of value there."

"Well, they helped us get the first one out for free. We had the one DLC out for free. And I think... they have to look and say, wow, we're kind of being unfair to everybody else if these guys can do that," he continued.

So the reason you're going to be paying for Crash Course this month is entirely down to Microsoft. And why? According to Faliszek, it's so that other publishers that charge on the service don't get a bad wrap because of it. Hardly an ideal system, where Microsoft "punishes" publishers/developers that want to offer free content - in fact, it's the consumer that is punished - but you can see the logic.

Will this have a detrimental effect on upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 360 sales? Well let's be honest, purchasing it on the PC will net you free content as opposed to purchasing it on the 360 where you will have to pay, so it only makes sense.

Microsoft money hungry bastards. I knew it was them.

They have about $200 billion and they want more from us? This is the reason im getting a ps3 this saturday. So much free stuff on that, Sony actually cares about people, whereas Microsoftonly care about money.

FYI, this is nothing new. M$ has ALWAYS been behind the pricing. MANY devs want to release DLC for free but M$ doesn't let them. Or the devs may want to only charge X but then M$ jacks up the price.

Which is why I always get annoyed watching people bitch out devs for pricing.

Even if they charge, which I see is profitable, why do it for such an odd price? 7$? 5 would be much better, though free would be best. I'm probobly not getting this, unless it's REALLY good.

Microsoft sucks for doing this. Their mentality is "Everyone else beats you, so we won't let Valve not hit you." It's just keeping the status quo.
Microsoft has been doing very well lately due to the expense of the Playstation, but with the price change and the upcoming games, Microsoft better start kissing our asses.

All else, vote with your money, and don't buy the DLC.

i already knew microsoft chose the price. it does seem stupid though. its also the reason l4d is still $60 new on 360 but $30 new pc. i swear if i ever get a computer that can play steam games (no dvd reader and low graphics card currently. the main reason i quit pc gaming), i might just give up on the 360.

But if Valve wants to make their DLC free, why they don't do like Behemoth and charge a very low price, instead of 560 MP. In fact, for the King Pack and the Necromancer Pack, Behemoth wanted them to be free too. Microsoft says no, so Behemoth decides to only charge 160 MP each.

Valve was gonna offer us this for free and then Microsoft says no? If a company wants to give something out for free, let them. If it makes other companies look bad, fuck em. Or am I missing the point of economics here? I didn't know Microsoft was looking out for other companies reputations. I would've expected less from a company that's given me 3 replacement xboxs that all got the RROD. Keep up the great customer service, Microsoft!

maybe people shouldn't be blamming microsoft and blame the devolpers for giving us half assed games to begin with where there NEEDS to be DLC to make it longer/better/ect. I see the Castle Crashers example, well they had pictures of the weapons and charcters long before the game was released, so it was always there. Most DLC that is not maps or episodes os just 300k here and there yet we are forced to pay $10. Don't tell me that wasen't an unlock code.

Dlc prices lately are a bunch of $h*t, How can they justify these prices, +400MS for a few hours worth of game play on any DLC... if your lucky. Force unleashed charges 400MS for a few costumes, no gameplay at all, they should have been 80MS. 560MS for this DLC now, what coulden't make it 400MS, I've seen whats in this DLC and its not even worth that much. Valve should have stuck to their guns and made it free, screw MS, they only see us as a potential sale. Valve should have thought about L4D 2, if their charging this much for DLC for the first one, you can bet on seeing more of this for the second one. Why would Valve even bother with this DLC with L4D 2, right around the corner, especially when the price of this one seems like its making up for the free one they gave us.

Wednesday, September 09, 2009 @ 10:22:41 PM

Microsoft will deliberately put achievements in this dlc so that completionists and others will "have to" get it. Just a grade A scam by Microsoft till the release of L4D2. They know that we've been wanting something more to L4D, so they decide "why not now, we'll still get them to buy L4D2 no matter what, plus those starving fans will buy any dlc with achievements anyway."

I still dont see what the big deal is in paying for new DLC. By new I mean stuff that actually adds to the game, not like the ones that just unlock something already in the game. Valve may be blaming M$, but they are still getting part of the profit from the DLC, and since they had to spend time developing it, why shouldnt they get paid for it? True, they usually give away all the add ons on PC, but I dont see why they should HAVE to just because they always have. If I ran a game company I would charge for some content too, but only if it adds to the game in a signifigant way. The first DLC was right to be free, cuz it really didnt add much. This one adds alot more so I dont have a problem paying for it. Dont like the price, dont buy it. Its a simple as that.

Now I can understand why they sorta "need to charge" . . . like it was said a few months back (I forget what the DLC on the table was) Microsoft owns the space that they put on the marketplace. . . so if you pump up the marketplace full of "Free things" How can the market sell? I'm still getting this regardless. . . . and like it was said before. . . .Microsoft knows that.

To all the people who are whining "OMG because of this article I'm getting a PS3!!!" wake the fuck up. . . .you've already given Microsoft your money. . . buying the system, paying for your Gold. wow. just wow. it's $7 people, $7 for a new set of levels with new dialogue and maybe even new weapons. Left 4 Dead was one of the best games last year, and now you're gonna get some more achievements for it. Even if you are the lowest paid person in America (min wage is $7.25) you can work an hour and afford this.

to the three people "quitting" the 360, go ahead. enjoy the mere 5 decent exclusives the ps3 has to offer plus a watered down achievement system that doesn't even cover all of their games. less people for me to compete with for gamerscore (not that any of you could ever offer me a real challenge).

If they put more "OVERALL" achievements (ones that relate to any campeign and not just the bloody "Crash Course" DLC) for a clear cut maybe 200 that would be great. . . but chances are. . . we'll only get the 50 lol

Sony create revenue through downloads by charging the publisher, not the consumer. It costs publishers 16c every 1Gb of bandwidth is used (downloaded by PSN user). This means that the 360 gets more demos and DLC than the PS3 (it just costs more to download for consumer). This and the fact that XBL is far superior to PSN in socializing capabilities, connections and of course content should indicate to you that you are making the wrong choice replacing your Xbox with a PS3.

I usually take the role of defending Microsoft in similar situations to this, but in this case, I see no defense. There is no financial reason for Microsoft to charge for this DLC pack. @Ace Of Dawn: I understand your position, and most of the time, I am in your exact position, but in this case, it seems that Microsoft is recieving the content from Valve for free. If that is truly the case, then Microsoft should make it available for free as well.

Left 4 Dead 2 is the only game that they have released in less than 4 years after the first game came out, partially why it is such a big deal, since Left 4 Dead 1 just came out last year. Yeah, Sora.. I was answering your question.

Although Samurai Warriors 2 XL may not be worth the $$. You only get 250 more achievement points for a whopping $30-40 DLC charge (i can't remember the exact amount), plus it takes up TWO GIGS of memory.

But I was bored and since I rent most of my 360 games I felt like I owed Koei a few bucks. Plus it helped me unlock 4 characters that had annoying guidelines in the original Samurai Warriors 2.

Valve is full of BS. Even if Microsoft pushed them into doing it, they could easily bring it out on a OXM disk, or find a sponsor as someone said before. I'm real tired of Valve promising what they can't deliver, and don't act as if this is the first time they did this. There a long history of Valve lying, and I'm tired of people acting like there God.

Anyway this is why I got it on the PC. I knew they would pull something along the lines of this. As in TF2, and CSX. I know it sounds like I hate Valve, but I don't. Valve can be a great at times, but horrible others.

DO NOT BUY THIS DLC! If you want to prove a point, get as many people to boycott the shit out of it and DONT BUY IT! I love this game, a lot, but that doesn't mean I am going to shell out the $ to get it. What happened to the good 'ol days when DLC was free. Sure, there was very little of it, but as examples, ALL of the Halo 2 map packs were free, along with other small things, such as the KotOR space station thing. Point is, consumers need to band together and make a point. It will not only hurt Valve, it will hurt Micro$oft as well. They wont get the $ they want, and if we could all do this, what would be the response? They'd have to bend eventually. C'mon guys, YES WE CAN!

No one thinks it's a privilege to game. But we do have to pay for the console, the Live subscription, and the game itself. Microsoft already gets a vast chunk of the money that's put into all this, so you'd think the vast majority of the money that goes into the DLC should go to the developer, and that THE DEVS should choose the price. MS of course should get a small (keyword small) percentage for hosting it on their service.

Not so. The devs do the work, then MS picks the pricing (for the most part). We already pay for the bandwidth with the Live subscription, what else does MS want?

At least it's actual content that was worked on after release, not that stupid download key stuff. I've already stopped buying games from a couple of devs that started pulling that crap.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone saying its unfair that they get to choose to give out free content. That excuse might have worked twenty years ago fucktards. I gladly pay for live because its worth it, but all this price bullshit is really grinding my gears. Fuck overpriced xbla games, fuck overpriced DLC, fuck bullshit excuses, and fuck you microsoft for charging an account I didn't use for 14 months.

I think we should all sign our bank accounts over to microsoft, let them take whatever they want , whenvever they want. besides sony has a much better linup of exclusives coming in 09-2010 than 360 does. no I am not a ps3 fanboi I love both my systems but the 360 has really let me down lately, I cant beleive I wasted 5 bucks on that pinnacle station dlc for mass effect, what a rip, not even any real missions, and sony gives away free themes and stuff while MS charges for that crap

Why would you ever play this on the 360 when you can play the far superior and far cheaper PC version?

Regardless, there's no justifiable excuse (PERIOD) for releasing something for free on one platform and charging for it on another. Actually, there is ONE excuse, and it goes along the lines of "we just want more of your money". And to the people that are "just going to pay for it anyway", thanks for adding to the growing cancer that's killing and will eventually kill the gaming industry (again). Pretty stupid to bring this issue up now, if you ask me. Pc gamerz always get free content as it's kind of a pc thing & has been for many years before the 360 was even a blip of an idea on the radar.

I myself game mostly on 360 now & don't mind paying but pc is definately where the value for money comes in as you only have to buy most games & just look forward to content updates/patches :0D

Unless they are "Games For Windows Live Games" that's where microsoft charges the pc gamer for content, this is in affect and has been for awhile. For example: Fallout 3's content update, that you gotta pay for & a few others!

I was shocked at paying for new map packs when i 1st got Call of duty Modern warfare on 360 as i'd been playing it on pc for about a year before the move to the 360 & i

it's so that other publishers that charge on the service don't get a bad RAP because of it.

*Fixed*

540 isn't bad for DLC. There's worse around. MS do seem to shoot themseleves in foot with things like this. Epic managed to get a free DLC pack out for GoW1 by using sponsors, but MS made sure all the other DLC had to be paid for.

Ultimately, this is our fault. Piracy has made the industry turn to draconian methods of ensuring their product is not stolen. Micro-payments are the future, get used to it.

How about for once everyone who REALLY MEANS that they're sick of the price tags on free DLC just not buy it?

I mean, I'm not completely against the micro transactions, and I think Arcade games are one of the truly better ideas that MS has come up with, but paying for extra content in a game has always been iffy with me.

Sure, MS can use the "bandwidth charges, storage, etc." argument for the price of DLC, but can someone remind me again just why exactly were paying $60 a year for Gold?!

I've noticed actually that the DLC is a lot better than it used to be. If you look at some of the DLC for earlier games you could spend point son costumes and items and all sorts of pap, nowadays at least the DLC is extra content as the developers have realised that no-ones going to pay for something thats not worth having.

As for boycotting, its a wonderful idea, but there'll be enough people out there who will still buy it regardless so you'll end up just missing out.

Also ok, my foreign economics isn't great but in the UK 560 msp is about £4.50, now that's bugger all, thats not even a pack of fags. I could understand if it was £10 because thats a the price of a second hand game (Ok not a good one but still). If you consider you pay for your live, you pay for you internet, in the

Oh yeah right, no one who said they're getting a ps3 here is actually going to go get one. They're charging me $7 for some DLC?!?! Forget this console! lol. I bet it's seven dollars because MS wants to get a little bit for the free survival mode and this is their way of doing it. It won't be worth $7, not even close. Even if it was 400 points, this probably won't be worth it because it's not even a full campaign, just a half of one. They have already said it was built to play fast. All it's going to do is ruin people's 100% gamer score.

Look, Microsoft has given back a little bit with the avatar stuff, but look at where that went, straight to the wallet. Are they going to eventually charge to use Facebook and Twitter on the 360? I know they won't, but you kinda have to ask you

First off...anyone "switching to a PS3"...you do realize L4D is only on the 360/ PC, so, no, you won't be charged for DLC, since it doesn't exist. As for defending Valve, well good company or not, they have been milking L4D since launch. When it came out it retailed at $49.99...it got popular and they bumped it to $59.99. MS had nothing to do with that. They offer "free DLC", then package it with a GOTY edition (that cost $59.99 when the reg edition was down to $49.99 again) a month later. MS had nothing to do with that. Now they add DLC, for a price, a year after launch, and 2 months prior to the sequel. Maybe MS is putting pressure on to slap a price on it, but they definitely aren't the only greedy ones. I'll be passing on this one, and just be picking up L4D2 (which is $5 cheaper if yo

If you're tired of Microsoft charging for DLC, then join my group! It's public, and all we have to do is get like-minded individuals who are tired of this DLC bullshit. DLC, if no achievements are present, should be free, period. Even if there are achievements, damn near everything is for 800MSP which is usually a fucking rip off. If they were to lower that price to 400MSP than even that would be acceptable. The only things I could understand that should cost more are legit EXPANSIONS. (Think Shivering Isles) Arcade titles should stay the same, generally, but even the pricing on those are getting a little ridiculous. My group is one that abstains from buying into Microsofts scheme to milk us for all we're worth. Again, it's a public group, so join up if you're tired of this and want to boy

I never did blame Valve, thought that the gaming community had figured it was MS. Not gonna lie, I will get both Crash Course and L4D2. That's just me. CC's pricing should be up to Valve, but it isn't. That's just how it is.

cott DLC. There is power in numbers my friends, and as our numbers grow, we can cost Microsoft a lot of money, eventually, and hopefully, proving a point.

The truth is I will buy the DLC and l4d2 because l4d is a great game. Microsoft knows that and in the long run I will enjoy both very much and will probably not be disapointed with my purchase. If you are one of the people who say they won't buy it that is your problem. get over it.

It's called free market capitalism. If the other companies want to compete, then they can either release a better product for a price or give it free. Microsoft, as usual is using its stranglehold on business to push other companies around and wring money from its customers.

Come on people, they gave us one DLC for free, and its only 560 points, does it really matter. I'd get it even if it cost 1000, I just want to play L4D.

I think that if Microsoft doesn't want publishers to look bad by making people pay for their content, why can't they be competitive with content

I don't know if anyone remembers but they did this to epic as well. They too once had a tradition of supporting games that were supported by fans free of charge. Then after the first gears maps I suppose a sponsor was never found and the maps were 10bucks.

Also with utIII epic wanted to release more dlc and thought they could just label it as a patch. The problem was the update was larger than 200mb which on the microsofts console constitutes it as dlc. All dlc must charge the customer so instead of doing that they decided to never release the content at all.

Downloadable content - achievements or no achievements - will you buy it with or without them?
If the content is good, or for a game I love, I'll buy it regardless of whether chievos are included
I'll still buy and play the downloadable content, but achievements would be nice.
Who the hell cares!?
No achievements, no sale ... and that goes for any game ... whether you're GTA or Halo!
Just stop with the DLC achievements full stop ... you're ruining my completion percentage dammit!
