Fisher's Trademark Goggles Return in Splinter Cell: Conviction

From a personal standpoint, I found it a little unnerving that we hadn't seen Sam Fisher in his trademark night vision goggles in everything we've seen of Splinter Cell: Conviction so far. Those nerves were settled this evening when Ubisoft confirmed that the goggles will make a triumphant return.

Max Beland, Splinter Cell: Conviction's Creative Director, at an Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction demo for a crowd of 5,000 at PAX, confirmed the news with a short video.

The short video showed off Sam Fisher sporting his trademark night vision goggles and gave us a brief (really, really brief) look at them in action as he switched to the thermal imgaing mode.

It wasn't much, but it was enough to satisfy us. Some would say we're easily pleased. Hopefully Ubisoft will release the short trailer in the coming weeks so you can see it for yourselves.

  • Excellent.
  • F***ing sweet...happy to be an xbox owner! I am truly excited for this game. The first one on the original xbox is basicallt what made me buy it, and am happy this is an exclusive title.
  • I could care less. While I know it's the trademark of the series, I did fine without them in Double Agent.
  • The only game I've played in the series was Pandora Tomorrow, and it bored me enough that I couldn't finish it. From what I hear, it's the worst in the series... I've always wondered if I should give Splinter Cell another shot.
  • thats wierd, i dont remember not having them in Double Agent, lol.
  • i remember having them in double agent...
  • Good news.
  • Well the next gen versions of Double Agent were trash compared to the games before anyways...
  • Wasn't the reason of removing those goggles because it was a bit unrealistic? How can Sam not been seen with three of those giant headlights on his head? OT: I stopped caring for Splinter Cell during Double Agent. Haven't even finished the game.
  • #10, at first I didn't like Double Agent myself. But when I played it again, I actually thought it was well made.
  • I've liked every Splinter Cell so far, regardless of which console they were on. Probably my favorite game series thus far.
  • What does it matter if he has goggles or not. And also when you hide in shadows don't enemies see the green lights.
  • The original Xbox version of Double Agent was actually really good, seeing as it was made by the original Splinter Cell team, unlike the POS version on the 360.
  • Fisher had the goggles in the first mission of Double Agent ... at least he did on the PS2 version of the game. OT - I wonder how they'll justify this in the game - particularly since they've made a big point of mentioning that Sam won't have access to all his nifty little gadgets - a flash back mission? A fight with another operative? A 'twist' where Sam is still working for his agency and so has access to his gadgets SOME of the time?
  • Erm does the night vision goggles thing really matter?
  • #10 & #13: Ubisoft has stated that the glowing lights on Sam's body was done in your benefit and does not reflect how things would actually be. It all glows so that you know where parts of his body is in total darkness, along with them being a nifty trademark. But if yu ever happen to cross by a mirror, you'll notice that you don't see the glow, and because of that, they can be hidden. It's like how you can flip a Scorpion tank in Halo. A tank shouldn't flip in the first place, and no matter what you think, a SPARTAN shouldn't be able to flip it anyway. I think the term is game slang. #16: It's a nostalgia thing.
  • #17: You beat me to the explanation, =] I have to agree though Double Agent wasn't one of the better games in the series, but hopefully Conviction will live up to the hype. Looks great so far.
  • #4 It's 'I couldn't care less' lol. But yeah it is kinda meh news
  • Ryan Davis has now lost his bet and owes Vinny 50 bucks. Also, I am glad that the NVGs will be back for another go round.
  • cool
  • Nevermind the goggles, I just want Lambert damn it. Regardless whether you chose to get him killed or not.
  • I'm glad their back, but I kinda enjoyed having to get by without them in Double Agent.
  • It's cool that they're included, even though I wouldn't have minded if they weren't. I think the best title in the series was chaos theory. The knife truly added so much more depth to the game.
  • I can't believe this has made the news page haha... Peace
  • This is pretty cool. I wonder if you'll get to break into the Third Echelon to get your goggles back. I've read the first two books and they were great... the third one didn't interest me at all.
  • this is exciting yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive always enjoyed using the goggles at sc3 cant wait for the game too
  • ok... i already knew it
  • Awesome, I was concerned that they had yet to show up in any trailers or previews.
  • Vinny wins!!!
  • Sam Fisher without his goggles would be like sonic not being a hedgehog.
  • FUCK YEAH Hope the multiplayer is like chaos theory tho !!
  • Sweet goggles
  • Haha. Max Beland.
  • Can't.Fucking.Wait.
  • i hate the jba hq missions in DA, and i hope they bring those googles to the avatars. preferably as an award, but i will pay 100-250 M$P's
  • I hate to be the party pooper but I'm just not loking forward to this. It looks like an action game from what I've seen! (Sam kicks down a door and absorbs an unhealthy amount of shotgun shells, only to retaliate with his pistol.) If I see some actualy stealth, I'll consider it, but for now, this game is off my radar.
  • @8 Good news indeed!
  • sam fisher is now truly back in the game....cant wait for 2010 to get my hands on this game
  • Didn't really like double agent either, good game, and yes he did have night vision goggles, but just didn't float my boat. Still this game is shaping up to be a pretty sweet game. Really looking forward to it, specially the unique way of displaying missions
  • I have a slight feeling I may not like this game as much as the others in the series. From the sounds of it you will be rewarded progress through the game wheather you run and gun or turn to the use of stealth.
  • never been a fan but i think i might pop my Splinter Cell cherry when this comes out.
  • I watched the video at the booth at PAX several times. This game looks way better than the last and the guy that was doing the presentation stated there will be lots of cool gadgets. There was also the new execution mode of targeting enemies which looked pretty slick.
  • I've been hoping to hear something like this.I don't know if its just me but He just wouldn't seem like Sam Fisher without the goggles.
  • i think it would be cool to do the game without any toys and get them as bonus unlockables at the end to play through the game again with all the bells and whistles. but i think all games should allow successive playthroughs with added incentive. @ #5: Yes, Pandora Tomorrow is by far the weakest and most linear. Give either the original a go or if you really just want to play great games then skip directly to Chaos Theory. It's one of my top 10 fave of all time and I still play through it yearly.
