Guitar Hero 5 DLC Not Compatible With World Tour
Written Saturday, August 22, 2009 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

For all those wondering whether the new DLC, already hinted at for Guitar Hero 5 this week, will work with your copy of World Tour, simply put ... it won't.

"Guitar Hero 5 downlodable content will be compatible with future Guitar Hero and Band Hero games," a rep told Destructoid. "However, the advancements and innovations made to the franchise do now allow for downloadable content to be backwards compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour." The "advancements and innovations" mentioned are the new band moments, Expert + on the drums and vocal star power.

So if you were quite content to sit back on your copy of World Tour and just keep on adding to the title with DLC, think again. Activision wants you to buy Guitar Hero 5 to access all future downloadable content. How nice of them.

Rock Band is garbage compared to GH. GH5 could possibly have well over 200songs on release day not including DLC, that is if you are able to transfer every song from WT and Smash Hits.

so if the dlc will be compatible with future games, does that mean there will be "advancements or innovations" in any future games in the series?

They're making even more of those games...? >_>
For crying out loud! Microsoft, give music games their OWN marketplace already! Or atleast bundle all songs released on the same game, the same day, into just one browser link.

My God make up your minds! You guys said GH WT is crap, so you sold it and played Rock Band 2, even though the game is crap you're angry that the DLC won't work for it? Seriously, why is everyone dogging Activision/Neversoft, you guys need to watch videos on this game, it isn't a milkage. Another thing, define milking, here's my answer to "Activision is milking Guitar Hero waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!" Rock Band country pack, Rock band track pack vol. 1, vol. 2, metal pack, RB AC/DC (At least Activision gives bands proper games), and Guitar Hero 2 Rocks the 80's, that was Harmonix! THEY STARTED MILKING IT BEFORE NEVERSOFT, so please STFU, if you're coming here to say RB is better, go and play it, nobody wants you here.

I find it hard to believe they can't edit out the expert + and whatever new features, but it's easy enough to redo all of the note charts for people with the rock band drum kits.

Well, it seems GH has taken the path of a sports series and cranked it up to 11. Music games lost my support after RB2, the only one I'm considering is DJ Hero, but if that's big enough the same shit will happen all over again.

@36. Spot on. Rock band weekly DLC, is that not milking also? Either you want to play and pay for it, or you don't. No point whinging. I can whinge all day about not being married to Jessica Alba but it aint gonna change anything. (Though I wish it did!!) Companies make money, thats what they do, they have shareholders and employees all of who have families to support. When was the last time a charity made a game??

Is it me or is #36 the last man standing on the 'GH is better than RB' sinking ship...?
I could point out that whilst he's right, Harmonix probably did start milking it before neversoft, the brilliance of PR/spin means that no-one actually moans/complains/gives a damn when HMX do it.
And again, through bad PR representation, Activision are looking more and more like money grabbing bastards.
But, I'd rather resort to the internet standard and just say, STFU yourself... Telling me I'm not wanted here cos I actually do prefer RB to the turgid shit bag that is GH...
and yeh, #38, right with ya!

@41 I was talking about kids who just come in and say RB@ is bettaAAA!!!! LOLZORZ without backign it up.

@43 Last I checked there was 28 Metallica songs and 20 other songs... It's good they teach you math is school. Secondly, pop? Where are you getting pop from, Children of Bodom (Yeah they did a Britney Spears cover but so what?! :P)? Iron Maiden? The Man in Black? Megadeath? We aren't talking about Band Hero. It's $60 for Smash hits, 48 songs. Let's convert that to RB Dlc, 48 x 2 = 96 dollars. You can use your calulator if you don't believe me.

@46 I'm stating facts, and here's proof of mob mentality, everyones ganging up on me because I have a different opinion and I'm stating facts. Imagine if this happened to all the famous revolutionaries in the past (I know I'm not Martin Luth

wow, gotta love stupid people. how is this wee bit of information making you not get this game, if you were in between before? its not like this has any effect on gh5 at all, so why not buy it? i may never know your reasoning.

this only makes sense people, the easiest synonym i could use -
the original xbox is outdated
there is alot of games for the original xbox
Xbox 360 is the upgraded version of the xbox
still following? good.
there are many games from the original xbox you can still play on xbox 360
but the xbox 360 is so much more advanced, the advanced games are incompatible with the original xbox.

they may be "money grabbers" but that term fits nowhere in this thread. you just see Activision and immediately think, OMG YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO GET MORE OF MY PARENTS MONE

OMG comment 49 is so right and by the way activision aren't milking anything, neither of the companies are, its your choice if you want to buy the game or DLC so everyone just shut up about milking the games, and also at comment 11 guitar hero 1 came out before rockband so I think you have it wrong way round, comment 25, re-read what you wrote, idiot. And finally Rockband, basically is pop music guitar hero has way better, more alternative songs and the GH: Metallica game would be ridiculous if it was only Metallica, they put in their fav songs from other bands, bands that do concerts with them.

Two Words: Bull Shit.

It's amazing how they think they can feed us that line and we'd actually believe it. Just another excuse to make some more money off of the franchise they're milking to death.

I'll stay with Rock Band, thank you very much. At least they don't pretend backwards compatibility is some kind of HUGE new scientific breakthrough.

So what? I could really give a shit because this game is already looking awesome. Think of how they'd have to go in for each and every single dlc song and take out the expert+ and all the new stuff they added for gh5. It's not like rock band added ANYTHING new to their charts that would require them to change stuff for.

Plus, anyone still "sitting back on World Tour" can go screw themselves. That'd be like someone still with Halo 2 complaining about new Halo 3 maps being incompatible. Just by the game. It's not that much. I hate how everyone always gives Activision so much shit for releasing new games apparently "just to make us spend money". Well guess what? It works... People actually like to see new things in Guitar Hero games like uhm I don't know an entire game devoted to Metallica? Vs a 5 total songs rock band's got... And then Smash Hits which EVERYONE and their MOTHER complained about... damn. It brought back great songs, from great games, with better graphics and improved charts. I say, keep it coming Activision. I love your games and will continue to love them. At least you guys aren't the ones

And, not that I'm baggin on Rock Band... because it's still a great game (I personally like drums on RB better, but guitar, hell no) but it seems to me that everyone who owns it is so anti-Guitar Hero it's not funny. And I won't go into that whole "Well, GH came first wah wah wah" bullshit because no one cares. All I'm sayin is Guitar Hero perfects their shit: Guitar/bass charts, graphics, real-life stars (Ozzy is a must... lol), and abundance of artists; while Rock Band perfects their shit: singing, drums, dlc, and being MTV and having access to a bunch of artists. And I like it that way. Why can't people meet half-way on this one, eh?

@36 All RB games you listed, except for AC/DC, was just DLC for people that can't download the stuff online. So that's not really milking anything. I quit buying GH after 2 just because I felt RB did it all better. I also like that I was able to play all my RB songs (RB1, AC/DC, & DLC) with RB2.

Besides all that I don't plan on buying anymore music games anyways because I've grown tired of the overflow of them. Specially Activision with Band Hero, GH5, DJ Hero, and GH: Van Halen all in 1 year. That's what I call trying to milk it.

Wow, so many people complaining that their out of date since the day it was released game won't be able to handle some NEW stuff. Oh no, the horror, looks like we have to keep with the times, but we can't possibly do that, it's just not ethical, this is racist, I call shenaningans. Doctor, this man is clearly insane, what should we do with him? Throw him to the dogs!

And all this while, I thought only 4 people liked World Tour...

Rock Band can do this because the only thing that changes is slight things like ho/po chords. GH ALWAYS has a new engine of some kind. But you can't say shit to either fanboy, so I'm going to go play and love both games. Same time baby, just pack it in, it'll fit, no lube.

Ok, so is World Tour DLC compatible with GH5?

And, all this fanboyism is embarrassing. I would rather buy games of the Rock Band series than the Guitar Hero series, and that's because I like Rock Band's interface, dedicated DLC, and setlists. However, I'm still glad to play the Guitar Hero franchise through rentals because it is still a fun game. Yes, Activision is milking the Guitar Hero name. And that's why I rent instead of buy. Also, I'm better with Guitar Hero's game engine than I am with Rock Band's, and that always feels good.

Rock Band got it right with 1 game, did it better with a 2nd, now making a game about one of the best Bands of the past generation, and working on a 3rd that is going to crush. How you ask? Because with RB's logic "Why change something that is great? Why not improve?" You can't complain about a Rock Band game, because there is nothing to complain about. It's a great game period.

I don't see how this is news...there isn't a single GH game whose DLC works on any other, so why would it change? I also don't understand why everyone in this thread is so pissy...both games are good, and both companies have different takes on the direction they are going. Just because the DLC isn't going to be BC is no reason not to get the game, it's a reason not to get the DLC! The GH DLC is mostly junk anyhow, as they have nowhere near the selection of RB, nor do they have as many full albums. I don't see Harmonix as "milking" anything nearly as much as Activision...yes, there have been quite a few track packs released for RB, but they are decently priced, can be played as stand-alone, and as long as you buy it new, you can use the code to download all the tracks and can then play them

"wow that is gay!"

"Advancements and innovations? WTFE."
the two things that came to mind when I read this

and my two cents on the rock band vs guitar hero shit
rock band charges me two bucks to play a song I like GH has me paying $60 that seems pretty self explainitory

and I don't exactly have a boner for rock band since this beatles shit is just retarded that i have to play a whole nother game to play there songs......screw this I'm going to nam

I'm not bothered about guitar hero milking anything, because as people have previously stated, it is cheaper that dlc, and you get achievements and blah blah blah... all i care about is that guitar hero 5 has a shite set list.

You all sound really surprised by this? You would think this was the 1st time activisions GH had ripped everyone off. I mean GH Aerosmith, GH Metallica and GH Van Halen give me a break, all these could of just as easily been DLC but no they thought they would rip everyone off a little bit more.

Simply amazing, I'm pretty much done with the whole music game genre. Sure I will throw in RB2 every once in a while if I'm bored and I probably won't buy one until RB3. I haven't bought a GH game since 3 and don't plan on going back. Call me a fanboy all you like but at least RB does it right, and just does weekly DLC and a new game every year sometimes longer. None of this every 3 month BS. This is just all my opinion so take it as you may

That's stupid! They're already making world tour songs that are compatible with 5! They're already making cross-compatible songs, just make more! but then there are new features, such as expert+...ugh. this is lame.>:[

oh well...I guess I just want the Rock Band dlc, since there's a larger list of songs, and at least it's cross-compatible...

Rock band is better doing DLC, cuz u choose which songs you want. RB3 will have all these new features and i think theyll make it so you can export all previous RBs to it, along with the DLC.
As for the track packs, thats mainly for people who dont have xboxlive, gives those people a chance to get more tracks.

For the record no RB Beatles DLC will be compatible with RB2, I don't hear anyone complaining, and there's no news of RB2 DLC working with RB Beatles, so why is no one dogging on Harmonix for that bitch move. Allow me to take you back in time. Guitar Hero one comes out for PS2, Guitar Hero 2 comes out, you buy it for X360. They release DLC, which is Guitar Hero 1 songs!

@100 Real guitar/drums is a thousand dollar investment and a lot of dedicated time, compared to a couple hundred dollars and fun and easy skill development that has nothing to do with the real instruments. You play CoD? Go join the army, it's ridiculous.

@99 who is Harmonix published by? EA, genius. No one is smacking your balls until you buy the games. It's not milking a game if you put as much effort as they do. The only game I would consider a milking is Smash Hits, but then again, wouldn't Ozzy, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd be milking their music too by creating Greatest Hit CDs or Best of CDs?

They made GH Metallica and now Van Halen as a tribute to the band. In no way is it considered milking if they get the band to mocap and animate the hell out of them, give them personalities, licence all the music, videos, etc.. They would do what EA does and just add one little quirk to the game.

This isn't very surprising. And why people care doesn't make sense either. Music games are the ONLY games that have DLC carry over to new titles anyway. We're lucky enough that they can do that in the first place.

World Tour sucks, why would you want to play that while Guitar Hero 5 is out anyway?

GH DLC is 99% shite anyhow, whilst RB continues to sign up, outstanding artists GH just releases game after game of tripe.

With GHWT broken drums and vocals and slide bar,was the final nail in the coffin for me for the GH series.

If you like mashing buttons that bear no reassemble to the onscreen song, then continue to by GH, if however you want to feel like your playing the song been played on screen stick RB is the place to be.

o.0 You were going to buy GH5, meaning it doesn't matter if its DLC is compatible with GHWT because it doesn't effect you as an owner of GH5, so you get mad and cancel your GH5 preorder? That makes sense.

Right, you make me laugh, you're mostly all stupid... "They want more money"; they are a company, it's what their main goal is. "They deny older users content"; so what? Things move on with time, it's about time you did too, quit living in the past. "This is gay"; yeah, I see how no backwards compatibility equals loving the penis in your manly bum.
"Super gay!"; yeah, not just gay, but gay with a cape.
"I'm going to cancel my pre-order"; makes sense, you were hoping that your new game's DLC would work with an older game.
"Fail Hero!"; great one, Fail and Guitar sound so much alike. And if a hero is a fail, he's no longer a hero, so it's impossible to be a fail hero, you're either a fail, or a hero. In your case, the former apllies.

Let's summarize:
GH releases a new 60 dollar game every 4 months and people are still saying it's worth the cost? Yet Rock Band allows you to pick and choose the tracks you want and allows you to play them in either game. Nobody is putting a gun to your head to buy a game OR the content that is released for it. All you little kids complaining about this stuff every week is more than a little disconcerting. Give it a rest.

Activision is brilliant. Say what you want about their money-making schemes but it works and it's not a rip off by any means. Look at the deal going on now, buy GH5 and get Van Halen early and free. The only free content Rock Band gives me is fecal matter. Their free stuff is icarly and some anime nerds' song and the 20 free track gig was a waste. Btw, there's no such thing as a GH fanboy because most people that own GH games also own Rock Band games while the Rock Band fanboys (which really exist, go in the music genre forums they're plentiful) own only Rock Band titles and constantly go into GH forums to flame GH.

#127 is a perfect example of a RB fanboy.

How about from a retail store perspective, huh???

All these games and expansions make it difficult to sell. It all seems way overwhelming, when it shouldn't be.

And trying to explain these things and compatibility to customers, its hard for us and them to understand.

And future titles? There's gonna be more after BH and VH? Plz no, just stop and focus on dlc for existing games.

Well, so the Rock Band community has said what their opinion is just as you all have had your opinions on the GH series...I don't see the need to get hostile.

I've been following both series since GH2 up until World tour...and I have both Rock Band titles.

It's down right common sense that RB2 > WT...the simple fact that world tour's DLC could only be used in quick play and the multiplayer is DEAD for the most part.

I don't understand why some of you are screaming "fanboy!!!" when it'll be you that'll be following Activision up until the day you die with these 'Hero' titles at this rate.

---------
@ Those talking about the free Van Halen title...I'll be honest and say it sounded like a good deal, but knowing Activision there has to be a scam to this deal, ya know?

Now everyone like I said is entitled to their own opinion(s). Maybe you think the GH:WT was better because of the music selection? But it's all personal preference.

I don't understand the immaturity of the arguing everyone else is doing here, but I can understand those that are still potentially interested in the franchise at the same time.

At the end of the day Activision is more of a 'milker' than Harmonix...but also at the same end of the day...they are both companies and they both strive for the same goal. Profits...lol.

@131 So every game is bullshit because they all copied Wolfenstein, or whatever FPS was the first ever one. It's an idea that is allowed to be shared.

@132 They're trying to perfect an engine, if GH5 sells and people don't complain out of their ass they'll focus more on DLC.

@136 If people didn't support this franchise we'd be living off the 3-5 songs Harmonix gives us weekly, which at times can be utter shite.

I love Rock Band 2, in fact I 1000 GS it and platinumed it on my PS3, it's a fantastic game, but GH5 looks to be good too. What I find confusing is the milking crap. Rock band beatles, couple months later Lego Rock Band and a track pack every other month. I understand track packs are for the none online, but seriously, 98% of the people are online, especially on current gen, that's not an excuse anymore. Activision is trying to broaden their audience, you like rap/techno, here's DJ Hero, there's 30% of gamers. Wanna play modern pop, here's Band Hero, scooped all the tweens.

That's debatable, as Rock Band may not exist had they not gathered ideas from Guitar Hero, or it could have been evolutionised from a single instrument just like GH.
But without RB its possible GH may not have moved towards adding drums, etc.
Personally i'm not getting any of these music related games... i only have the guitar lol.

Actually, Guitar Hero would not have existed were it not for Namco and their Guitar game. Harmonix made Amplitude and Frequency, which they took their own inspiration from when making Guitar Hero.

If you want to get techinal, Rock Band is the TRUE Guitar Hero. Mind fuck right there...

My question is why is everyone so butt hurt on how gh5 content wont work with gh wt, like why would you want to play gh5 dlc in wt, wt Sucked gh 5 is like 1000 times better and has new features, plus you can export most WT and SH tracks into it. People always say activision is milking the franchise, wake up peeps so is HMX RB1, RB2, Lego RB, TB:RB and so on. Aside from that I prefer GH over RB

Nobody has any sense of loyalty anymore. I won't deny that Rock Band is good, but that doesn't mean you have to hate on Guitar Hero. Without Guitar Hero, music games would not be as popular as they are today, yet people are more than happy to take a dump on it whenever they get the chance, for no reason other than the fact that there are more than two games in the franchise. If the games are good, which I think they are, then what does it matter if there are five or more installments? I just don't understand why people want to hate Guitar Hero so much.

@147 It's because they have the opportunity to compare it to another product and say how many mistakes they make. Personally I preferred RB to GHWT/Smash Hits, but GH5 looks AMAZING, it blows RB2 out of the water from what I've seen so far. RB2 wasn't really innovating or changing, GH5 however is adding SO many features it's ridiculous, plus unlike others I like the setlist, it varies and I like most of the music on it anyways. Plus they have some great dlc, Rise Against, In Flames, Queen, Alexisonfire.

I already wasn't gonna get this shit. Let's look at the milking ratios.

Guitar Hero : Since 2007 (when Harmonix left) 12(18 counting mobile phone games) games, not including Rocks the 80s (made by Harmonix.

Rock Band : Since 2007, 5 Main games and 6 track packs for people without internet connection on their console, totaling to 11 games.

Guitar Hero is still milking the franchise more. Even without the 6 Cell Phone games. And half of Rock Band's games are Track Packs (Beatles is considered a Main Game by Wikipedia)

I can see the headlines now, 'Activision in customer fleecing shocker'...

I'm stunned, I really am. Are we talking about the same Activision who hiked Modern Warfare 2's price just because, you know, it's Modern Warfare 2? The same Activision who will have released 4 or 5 Guitar Hero games this year alone, none of which are compatible with each other? The same Activision who seem more concerned with charging ridiculous money for over priced peripherals than developing new IP or doing anything to push the medium forward in any way? The same Activision that presumes by sticking the word 'Hero' on the end of whatever it chooses, it can then label it with whatever price tag it chooses?

This is a money grabbing corporate whore of a company, and the embodiment of everything wrong in the i

"This is gay"; yeah, I see how no backwards compatibility equals loving the penis in your manly bum.
"Super gay!"; yeah, not just gay, but gay with a cape"

This is the only good thing to come out of this News Post in my opinion, rofl. You made me laugh pretty hard.

I don't understand why everyone keeps complaining. This is x360a. The point of this site is for achievements. Last I checked, DLC didn't add achievements for any of the music genre games, so isn't it a good thing that they're making many guitar hero games so we can hey the achievements in them? And at $2 a song that's 30 songs for $60. Each disc comes packed with ay least 60+ songs so your wasting more on dlc anyways.

x360a should really just stop posting anything about Guitar Hero or Rock Band games or DLC, because it just starts a massive bitch fit about what game is better, or which developer is milking themselves harder. Seriously guys, both are great games. You either like them or you don't. None of these games HAVE to be bought by any of you, DLC dosent HAVE to be bought by any of you so shut the hell up about how much you don't want this game because theres a simple solution to your problem. Don't. Buy. The. Game. Easy right? And seriously these games are meant to be played for fun, it shouldnt get anyone upset about New DLC not being able to be played in an Old game. You guys actually thought that was a possibility? Wow. You should all know by now Activision isnt that generous of a company.

I Love these arguments it's just like all the WW2 games everyone still keeps buying...you who thought 5 worked for WT should know it wouldnt look at PS3 with its backwards compatability headache, is Sony cant get backwards compatibility down how could Activision get down forwards compatibility!

yes, we all know you think rock band is better.
nobody cares. do something productive with your life than whine about a game on an achievement helpsite.

Go ahead, waste your time flaming me. I have too much of a life to come back and check to hear what your pathetic self has to say, your only going to make yourself feel stupider.

@103
yeah no one is complaining about it. But there are several reasons about why neither are playable on the other game. If you played ... say a Megadeth song as the Beatles, wouldnt that be just a little weird, and Harmonix would need to recode each song specificily with a dreamscape. On the other side you have the 3 vocal harmonies, and you have the dreamscapes which each downloaded song will have that was not played live, such as Abbey Road, not to mention each one will have its own design and style not just a copy or reply of other dreamscapes. There is certain coding in the Beatles RB that RB2 wouldnt permit to play. Especially the dreamscapes. Im also sure the song licencing for The Beatles has certain limitations, exclusive to the game. Much like how GH Aerosmith wouldnt allow Aer
