Plane enthusiasts will surely have a ball today as they'll find a demo of 505 and Gaijin's upcoming fighter sim, IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, on Xbox Live.

The details of the demo are a little sparse at present and all we can tell you is that it's not available in Asia and it weighs in at 1.22 GBs. Other than that, we hear it has planes in ... oh, oh ... and sky.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is available September 4th in Europe.

Its a russian IL 2 Fighter Plane simulator, its been released in Russia on PC only but now developers decided to take it to xbox and made game's mechanics easier for console. On Pc this game was very hardcore, it took a lot of time before you learned how to play with all assistance off and on maximux difficulty, dont know if it will be the same with consoles but anyway this game definately worths a rent, it received quite good reviews in russian game magazines and websites, to buy or not is up to you.

Currently downloading, 42% complete while I try out the FUEL demo. BTW, this is a flight sim, apparently. Hope it's good.

Dude not just Russia.
It was pretty much world wide on PC .
In Europe those games are huge, and I even think they are popular in USA.
Awhile ago LOCKHEED, DOUGLAS and various other WW2 plane manufacturers sued the dev co and publisher for royalties on using the real plane names.
This action I believe killed the 3rd game or an add-on for 2 ( I can not remember which).
Those games are hard really hard flight sims- the sort you really can not play with out about a $1000 of flight sim peripherals.

I didn't know it was closer to an actual simulator.
Might look into getting it then...

Just played the demo. Not bad but the controls take some getting used to and the aiming is fricken impossible. Based off the demo I would say skip this and play Ace Combat.

This is NOT a hardcore sim :( (I wish it was). The game is rubish and to bloody easy !
I'm think i will pass on this one. I wish some company could bring out a very realistic flying game with modern jets. I would love very detailed controls and at the start and end you would have to take off and land !!!! IT would we a dream come true :)

In that case, I might give it a try. But I already have Ace Combat 6, so I'll probably just stick with that.

my thoughts on the demo:

- The graphics are nice. The engine seems more than capable of displaying trees and houses and such in full 3d rather than just teture mapped as is often the case in Ace Combat.

- The controls are a pain, for some reason they have mapped the Aileron/Elevator to the left stick and the Throttle/Rudder to the right. Where as the other way round would have made more sense. There are different control layouts, but they are ordered by difficulty. on realistic you have full control over flaps and trim so as you can peferct your landings and trim out any control instability caused by battle damage i would assume...though it doesn's say what you are trimming...so it seems a little pointless.

- You seem to be stuck in arcade difficulty on the demo, which is a bit of

a pain as the game is very easy on this level i.e. no limited ammo, and a sky full of ememy aircraft that seem to be made of paper. They do shoot back though, and will break formation if you persue them too much. Which is nice.

- Also, on Arcade the aircraft returns to level flight if you let go of the controls which is annoying.

Thats about all my complaints i think. Seems good enough if you just want Ace Combat in WWII if not, based opurely on the impressions this demo has given me, i'd say stick to the (brilliant) PC versions.

Thankfully this demo has everything for both arcade players and the hardcore fans as well. Definitely looking toward this one.

Actually you can unlock the realistic and simulation difficulties if you complete the first level on arcade, and i'll tell you simulation is so hard. I found the demo pretty good, graphics are brilliant for a flight sim especially the 3D trees and houses, might pick it up when it comes out.
