Dana White: "EA Doesn't Give a **** About MMA"
Written Monday, July 13, 2009 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

In what started out as an internet rumour, UFC president, Dana White, confirmed after Saturday's UFC 100 that anyone appearing in EA's MMA title would not fight in the UFC.

MMAjunkie are reporting that White stated that he was at "war" with EA Sports and insisted that they didn't throw the first punch.

"EA Sports told us, 'You're not a real sport,'" White said. "'We wouldn't touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this.'"

"We put our asses on the line, THQ and the UFC, to make a video-game deal in the worst economy in the world," White said. "We go out there and do this thing, and it's successful, and now ******* EA Sports wants to do a video game. Really? That's not what you told us a year-and-a-half ago."

"You told us you'd never be in business with us. They wouldn't even take a meeting because mixed martial arts disgusted them. This wasn't a real sport. Boy, they got over that real quick, didn't they?"

Furthermore White confirmed that the internet rumour was true and fighters who appeared in the upcoming title EA Sports: MMA title would not feature in the UFC.

"I'm not tap-dancing around this thing or whatever," White said. "I'm telling you straight-up, I'm at war with them right now. That's how I look at it."

Randy Couture is already set to feature in the EA Sports title and White wants to nip that in the bud now and does so with a simple message ... If you lend your likeness to EA Sports: MMA, "you won't be in the UFC."

"You know what the difference is?" White asked. "I'm in the mixed martial arts business. EA isn't ... EA doesn't give a **** about mixed martial arts. They made that very clear."

Strong words from UFC's Dana White there but I still can't get over the fact that EA actually turned down the option of the title first. The question remains, can EA's MMA title bounce back from this without the characters that make the sport of MMA so popular today? Or will money lure over the big characters to appear in the title at the expense of their UFC careers? Only time will tell but I highly doubt it will be the latter.

Tune in this time next week for the next episode of the UFC EA soap opera.

I agree with Dana, EA sports would not do the UFC and MMA justice in making a game.

"EA Doesn't Give a **** About MMA"
give a medal to captain obvious here. of course they couldn't care about mma, they care about profit, like a certain dana white and ufc.

ea could easily go with making original characters and still sell well if the game is good. ready 2 rumble didn't have ali or tyson and that was still a great game, sensible soccer didn't have the fifa licence and it's still addictive today. you don't need the big names to have a successful game.

Very "Don't fuck with me" and I like seeing that in people when it comes to money...
He could be making a ton of money for this and he is willing to turn that down to prove a point...
That is really good in my opinion...

Im not an overly big MMA fan but Dana White is spot on here - to hell with EA for trying to make money out of UFC's expense, with such a shitty title too - the game itself would probably be whored in under 10 hours - I bet there's a lot of UFC fans signing petitions for EA to put Brock Lesnar in the game lol

@22 - Kimbo's an overated pussy, who won't make it the UFC. Dana and EA are both just about the money. Randy's bitch of a wife ruined him. I've lost respect for him. Let him go to EA's game. I highly doubt EA's game will compete with UFC's. MAybe EA's looking to WEC, everyone knows that sucks.

why cant they just use all the fighters not in ufc? there are alot of good fighters out there and maybe some retired ones at that, wouldnt bother me if there were 2 ea games, more to choose from, doesnt mean i have to buy it. plus dana is just as money hungry as ea, hes just mad b/c some1 is gonna cut in on his money, i bet hed shut down all other fighting organizations too if he could, any1 see bisping get his jaw broke sat?

Dana is a whiny little ****. Its funny how a former WWE wrestler is now the best UFC has to offer (brock lesnar). That would irritate the hell out of him because UFC has beef with Vince McMahon. Y'know what, vince should let all his guys just go into UFC and kick everyones asses. Id pay to see guys like triple H and undertaker pummel peoples faces in.

On topic, I hope EA Sports make a kick ass game just to shove it up Dana.

@31 The UFC/Zuffa own the WEC now so that would also be unlikely to happen. Also EA already own Randy Coutures likeness from the C&C Red Alert 3 game which is why he wasn't in the THQ game. So if EA put a rush on their game i don't think there is much Dana can do about Randy being in it.

I know people are gonna get pissed for me saying this but EA is allowed to do whatever the hell they want. They're in a capitolist market and if you want to make sure money, you make a product that you know will be popular. I don't blame them for not making a UFC game a year and a half ago because it probably would've tanked, UFC wasn't popular back then.

As for their comment about UFC not being a sport, who knows what this Dana White said to provoke them to say that. I have never seen or heard Mr. White talk, but from this press release, he seems like a pretty agressive guy that would probably start a verbal arguement faster then some Evec. at EA would.

I think Dana White is blowing this thing out of proportion with threatens of expulsion of the league if they get involved with EA.

i highly agree with #42 Spooky. UFC:Undisputed is a great game, and it could keep strong with new fighter dlc. Lets face it there are new fighters in the UFC every month. DLC could really set the pace, and keep from EA getting fighters that UFC is waiting to put on UFC 2010.

EA Sports: MMA is going to be the most unsuccessful sports game ever.

Agreed with #48, no one is going to risk their UFC Career to be a feature in a video game, that will undoubtely be a bust.

The only person I can see them getting, besides Couture, is Tito Ortiz because he doesn't give a shit about the UFC anymore.

I really don't see an EA game in MMA doing well. EA manages to screw up everything it touches other than Madden (and I haven't played a NEW Madden game in a while). One thing I can say though, if EA makes a fun MMA game that has a fully functional online mode where people get punished for quitting matches...they stand a chance of gaining a pretty decent following...if people don't mind playing as a bunch of nobodies.

@31 and for others to know as well:

WEC is actually a subdivision of the UFC. So EA can't even use that name either.

I know EliteXC went under, but is Strikeforce around? That would be the only more popular thing EA could use, but even then it doesn't compare to the UFC obviously.

Oh, and not to repost, but I have a feeling it will feature WEC fighters, Brown vs. Faber 2 made a lot of UFC only fans (such as myself) start to watch some WEC, so with WECs rising popularity, that would be a good choice.

Good for him... EA doesn't give a fuck about ANYTHING unless there is money to be made. They've gotten a lot better with taking risks with new original IPs that have turned out to be quite awesome (Dead Space, Mirror's Edge)and Activision is becoming the new big publisher to be hated.

Dana White = Troll.

If someone who is in the EA game becomes big, and would be good buisness for the UFC to have on the roster, he would rather not have them because they came in a video game whose makers he has a petty year and a half old beef with?

Short sighted-ness FTW Dana. Grow up.

The thing is that Dana had to struggle to get a game made on UFC so they had it made by THQ and they took a huge risk in investing into something like this. They did it themselves and it payed off big and now that they made money EA comes in and says "We are going to copy you because you made a lot of money".

If you know anything about UFC then you would know how hard they had to struggle to become big and now that they are they won't let anyone step all over them. In other words they're not sellouts.

Dana White is a good man for his stance on this situation. EA mocked his MMA League in the past and now that it can make them money they want it. I don't know about you but I would respond in the same way.

The underlying business idea here is Dana pimpin' the UFC-sanctioned THQ game.

Evil Association is known for jumping on any bandwagon to get rid of any competition so I can understand Dana's fustration.look at what happened to the NFL 2k series it was awesome and more realistic than madden at the time so they bought an exclusive license same thing happened with the NCAA football series.I really don't support those money hungry d bags at all.they think they can make anygame and people would buy it just because it has the letter EA on it.

You all should watch what you're saying about EA, because I believe they are funding one of the greatest games to hit X360 and that is.....Mass Effect 2.
Sure EA is wanting to make money, they will put a lot of effort towards making a good game. Madden for example is a great franchise that had not so good design with 08, but 09 was great and I really can't wait for '10.
Everyone out there is trying to make money, I am glad that a smaller company, THQ is the one in control though. Nobody makes a game not to get money, and if they do then they may make a lot of sales initially but after that first month and all the hype is gone people won't buy it anymore or play the game even.

I don't know a single person on the UFC roster so I couldn't care if EA had licensed fighters or not. If the game turned out to be decent I'd give it a go

You're not the only one #87. Not a big UFC fan but I agree here, fuck EA Sports. Actually fuck the entire EA, fix MOH: Airborne's glitched achievement already assholes. Thanks :)

Oh and Dead Space doesn't mean you get to half-ass every other game. And quit with the bullshit DLC. Thanks again :)

I'd lol if EA offered all the big UFC stars huge money, and they left Douchebag Dana high and dry to go and appear in EA's MMA game.

Ohn and #78 "In other words they're not sellouts" That would be UFC - brought to you by Bud light, Harley Davidson Motorcycles, and anyone else who pays enough to plaster their unrelated product logo all over the UFC product, all for the mighty dollar of course.

I don't know about this story. Dana White is kind of fucking... deluded. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that EA never said half the things that Dana claimed they said.

Personally I think EA suck, although that's mainly because I'm bitter about them taking down game servers (NBA Live) and not patching achievements (NFS)

I think they should steer clear of making an MMA game if not any game every again, they'll just screw it up anyway.

It (UFC) seems to be more about Brazilian jujitsu than mixed martial arts now days anyway

I'd prefer a game based on Pride or K1

well just because of fifa i have to take sides with ea here... Dana said about the economical situation so why would EA not want to do this game... Just as every thin else in the world at the moment its every man/company for itself unfortunatley... And i for one want EA to come out on top... Some how i feel that thq just reminds me of being 11 again... I want the liscence games now and apart from the wrestling games its not going to games by EA... And like may of you iv grow out of that fake ****... I thought that EA made have made UFC A LITTLE LESS COMPLICATED TO... Plus when Dana says that if you feature in the game your out... Thats just being as childish so...

@#69 WORD!

I wasn't a big fan of EA until they brought us/me skate. & skate 2, mirror's edge and dead space. I don't give a shit about MMA or UFC but stop speaking that bad about EA. Look around. At Activision maybe. They're fucking up alot too. Don't even get me started on those special controllers for every single game..

Sure EA is after the money now but which publisher isn't?! THQ just had luck with this one. I don't think that EA can make a MMA game without anyone from the UFC as noone will buy it. Only thing would be: A. Make peace with the UFC or B. Get alot of licenced people from movies. Like Jean Claude van Dame, Bruce Lee, Hulk Hogan and so on and let them fight. I guess even I would buy that ;)

lmao you guys who are complaining about ufc having sponsors that have nothing to do with the sport are mentally challenged.

any sport that is big has sponsors plastered all over it. its called advertisment. with out it tv wouldent have half the shows it does.

xbox alone advertises out there ass. from cars to drinks. grow up. it doesent take away from the action now does it?

never once have i seen a show and been like damn there advertising this shows a sell out and its to money hungry. cause i watch what i want for entertainment. i dont stop playing xbox live cause on the dash board there supporting a shitty ugly car or a nasty new flavour of mountain dew. cause it really makes no difference at all.

dana white did the right thing to do. its competition that seen he got paid

EA turned down a UFC title because they thought it wouldn't make money, now UFC Undisputed is doing great and EA wants to cash in on the popularity of the sport. Dana, as much as I don't like him, is justified in his stance with this. EA has a right to make an MMA game, just as much as White has to deny UFC participation to those that sign with EA. It's called battle of big business kids, get used to it, it happens all the time.

oh, and to the guy that said he would like to see more WWE guys in UFC, Lesnar was an amature wrestler before the WWE, most of the pro wrestlers have spent thier training learning how not to hurt the other guy, Lesnar is strong as a bull, has a good background for MMA, and can pay anyone in the world a shit ton of money to train him. Most MMA fighters start from nothing, of course he is going to be at the top, he never had to prove himself, he got a shot at the title at 2-1 nobody has ever gotten that kind of treatment. 4-1 isn't that special BTW.. he gots 10-1 then I'll be impressed.

To the people suggesting that EA could use fighters from the now-defunct Pride Fighting Championship or the WEC: Dana White and the UFC own both of those properties, so figure out what your talking about before you post alright?
