Fight Night Round 4

Fight Night Round 4 Button Controlled Punching Coming September
Written Tuesday, July 07, 2009 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

Kotaku are reporting that EA will be releasing their button mapped punching controls  for their well received Fight Night Round 4, this coming September.

One of our few complaints about the hugely impressive Fight Night Round 4 was the inability to choose to control the punching mechanism with the face buttons but thankfully they are looking to rectify that now.

"We strongly believe that the refined Total Punch Control is the most intuitive way to throw punches in Fight Night Round 4," the game's senior producer, Dean Richards, stated, "but we also want fans of the franchise to have an option."

For all those cynics out there who doubted otherwise, the downloadable content (I suppose it's more of a patch) will be free to download as well.

In addition to the September button mapping content, EA also announced that there will be another free update this coming August. The August content is set to feature a new gym, "new gameplay sliders" and new gear with an alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard coming exclusively to the Xbox 360.

I have a feeling that EA may see a slight boost in sales for the title this coming September. Free content is always welcomed, right?

this would be perfect if the new sliders included wether you could play online with only TPC or button control. My opinion stands that this is a slap to the face of the devlopers because if these people who were complaining were really fans, that they would've already bought the game and tried to learn TPC to get better.

@2, they aren't doing anything but putting in a feature that was in the last game. I guess the new slider/gym is cool.
I don't like being forced to play the game one way, nintendo did it with zelda and mario hoops on DS and I hated the controls in both so I didn't buy them. Same here.

soo stupid that this wasn't included from the get go. The main problem with using the right stick to punch is that it is also needed to block when combined with right trigger and there is a slight pause when you try to punch after coming out of a block

The dev that thought 'stick only' punching was a good idea should be shot in the face for not giving us that option to begin with.

"Dean Richards, stated, "but we also want fans of the franchise to have an option."

Only in hindsight, they didn't care about options until after the game was finished and the hatemail came in.

@4, Nothing noobish about using buttons at all, i've been playing this series since it appeared on PS1, Its just that alot of people prefer using buttons instead of being "forced" to use the stick method, FN3 had the right idea of utilizing both options.

EA should be taking note and addressing the flaws for the online belts instead of adding the option for button mashing!!!!!

EA are loosing the plot when it comes to online sports games and they aren't in the slightest interested in getting it sorted.

While I fully agree with #4's comment about it being filled with button mashing n00bies, it's already filled with stick waggling n00bies, so I can't see it making that much of a difference.

Oh c'mon, they're ALL patches. "DLC" is just a marketing name to force you to convince yourself you're not getting fucked over on content that should have been in the game when you bought it.

Well finally EA realised the foolishness of taking the buttons out. If they kept them out, it would have pissed off a large amount of fans and made many not buy it. I was gonna buy it anyway, because i love the FN series too much, although i was very disappointed with no buttons. So I'm very happy now. EA made a profitable decision.

I hope they release downloadable boxers like Marquez, Hopkins, De La Hoya, Mayweather and Holyfield.

I really can't believe people used the buttons in this game, the stick takes about 15 mins to learn, and when you have it allows you to swing and time your punches much better, it's how the game is meant to be played, you have to be a fucking moron to not be able to learn it, i just can't believe in this day and age there are still 1000's of people that want there gaming to consist of 1 button pushing games, you should all go back to SNES and super punch-out.

Give me a break. The button punching is for lazy bastards who don't want to take the time to learn something different. The stick control is the only control you need. LMFAO this thread is funny. There's some guy incredulous that they're adding buttons to this game because he thought this game was supposed to "realistic".How is stick spamming and rotating a knob exactly the same as punching some guy in their face? Then you have another person who can't believe that in this day and age, there are people who prefer buttons and can't learn stick movements. I can't believe there are people who don't know the difference between there, their and they're. It's a good ploy to get a boost in sales after the initial run, but I've just lost interest in this. Even in gaming, MMA garners my attention more than the sweet science.

I never played FN3, so I don't really even know how the button layout is, I just know how to use the RS. Which I actually kind of like, but I wouldn't mind trying this game with buttons just because I feel like I could put together better combos with the buttons. I also don't see how using buttons makes you a "noob." Look at the new UFC game that is out, that game is all buttons (except for the grappling) and tons of people complain how it is to complicated.
I guess I know what yall mean by button mashers, but if the game plays like it is supposed to, then someone doing only one move should just be an easy win.

Why do people still burn EA for being the Satan of Gamer Hell?

Surely the way Activision and others have gone recently, as well as the effort from EA to put out more original titles, at least knocks them off the #1 hate seed.

I like how everyone assumes that anyone who uses the buttons will be a "button-mashing noob". I was disappointed with the no-button setup but I have learned to enjoy the game anyway. But whether I use the stick or buttons, the flow and timing of a combo or a counter still has to be the same, and that timing is where the real skill of the game is, not the ability to flick the RS or tap a button.
