E3 2009: LEGO Rock Band Interview

E3 2009: LEGO Rock Band Interview
Written Sunday, June 14, 2009 by Dan Webb

There were a huge amount of music titles on show at E3 this year but it wasn’t just the usual Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band wallet measuring contest that we’ve become accustomed to. Of course, that was still there, but with titles like DJ Hero, Scratch “The Ultimate” DJ and LEGO Rock Band, it was clear that certain publishers were looking to broaden their horizon in the music market. Whilst wondering the show floor, we got chance to grab a few minutes with Alan Moore, Harmonix Producer on the upcoming family music title, LEGO Rock Band and talk about what to expect from the title when it ships this year.

So Alan, can you tell us a little bit about LEGO Rock Band and what we can expect to see in the title when it’s in stores?

So why are we making LEGO Rock Band first? We’re making LEGO Rock Band because Rock Band is the best party game ever made and LEGO brings a great sense of humour and that sort of playful, fantastical stuff that we wanted to bring in. It’s a really family friendly brand and that’s what we want to bring into the whole game.

What’s fun? We have a great story; we have like a rags to riches rock n roll story. We bring in cut scenes ... great LEGO cut scenes like from the other LEGO games. We’re bringing in all the fun customisation of the characters. You’ll be able to unlock new costumes that you can buy. You can play on a pirate ship, you can also play as a pirate, and that kind of stuff.

It’s family friendly as well, so we’ve got some specific changes to make the game easier at the bottom end; like a new super easy difficulty. With super easy, on guitar, you don’t have to worry about hitting buttons; you just strum along to the notes. And then the drums, you can hit any drum, so long as you hit a drum in time.

We’ve also got ... you know how you don’t die in the LEGO games, you lose your studs, or you fall off the wall and come straight back in ... well if you fell out, you come straight back but lose your studs and you can try and recollect them again. Well, we’re going for that same mechanic here.

Is it safe to say then that it’s Rock Band for the family then?

It’s partly that.

Like more of a gateway then into the Rock Band franchise?

That’s a big part of it ... the family part. I just like how we’re making it easier for the family to play together, as well as that, we’re going for music that’s fun, accessible. Some of the stuff you’ll all know and recognise ... Pink’s “So What” for example ... then there is some they won’t know but it’s all just great music. Like Song 2 from Blur, the one Blur song that everyone knows and loves. We’ve got The Final Countdown from Europe, Jackson 5’s, and loads more cool stuff.

We’ve also got the “Rock Power Challenges” and they’re kind of where the story really gives you more of a specific objective to do. The challenge we’re showing here, is called “Wreck and Roll” and so we set it out with a cool cut scene, then there is a demolition crew trying to knock down the building and luckily your band is there, and so your band goes into use the power of rock to bring down the building. We kind of spotlight different instruments, so drums, guitars, and if you’re doing well, you’re literally bringing the building down around you. Everything’s falling down, you’ve got windows blowing out, and then if at the end, if you’ve done well, the whole building will come down.

How will the other Rock Band DLC work? Will it be compatible seeing as it’s a Rock Band title?

We’re not talking about the online stuff really today. We’re not going into any specifics just yet, but as a general comment, we’re really committed to the Rock Band platform.

What sort of other things can we expect to see in terms of features? Or is it just about making the current Rock Band platform fun and family orientated rather than just a title for music lovers?

It’s all about fun rather than revolutionary gameplay. You can have a home area where your little LEGO guys can run around and you can customise it. You can customise your “crib” – not sure whether that’s the right word, I’d say your home space. We play in the LEGO mind frame of unlocking stuff, more challenges, clothing, etc.

We get to have a lot of fun with the challenges. Some of the challenges for example you get to be on a pirate ship and fight a giant octopus, you can also be in a helicopter trying to escape from a giant robot. It’s about making a really fun family experience with the LEGO humour.

How many songs can we expect to see?

We haven’t announced that just yet.

50 plus maybe?

Again, we’re not discussing that yet.

But I presume it’s a totally different style of set list than the traditional Rock Band titles?

Yeah, absolutely. It’s more of an eclectic popular song feel.

Plenty of pop songs then?

Yeah and stuff with guitars and drums in of course, but we’ve not finalized the set list yet. At Harmonix we work with the TT guys, we have dialogue and they have to run everything past LEGO, because they have to make sure everything is family. We’ve got things like “Girls and Boys” by Good Charlotte which is a good sing-along song.

So feel good songs basically?

Yeah, I think that’s fair to say.

Who would you say your intended audience was? Are you looking at just families or hard core Rock Band fans as well?

So we’re looking to extend it so that it’s a game that families want to play together, but at the same time, this is a game that core Rock Band fans are going to love as well. The expert difficulty is still the same expert difficulty that you’re going to find in our other games. It’s a co-development and one of the things that Harmonix are doing is the authoring, the pacing and the patterns and everything. As for expert we’re treating it the same as Rock Band. We’re just kind of extending the bottom end to make it more accessible.

When can we expect it to ship?

Holiday this year. We’ve got some cool stuff we’re not announcing yet, it’s going to come in the next few months. It’ll get people really excited.

LEGO Rock Band is set for a holiday 2009 release on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and DS.

I love the song list so far that I have read and this has definitely caught my attention. The only Lego game I did not like so far is Indiana Jones and hopefully this one doesn't go that way either for me.

I have a feeling that until the day they announce whether the Rock Band DLC is compatible with LRB AND whether the LRB set list is compatible with Rock Band, alot of hardcore Rock Band fans may not be interested in this.

See #1 I loved Lego Indy but I hated Lego Batman...and bionicle. No strafe=I feel retarded.

I heard a rumor that the songs on this game will be exportable to play in RB1/RB2.

I think if they're releasing a family friendly version of rock band they should release an unedited rated M version too. That would be aweosme.

this is pathetic. they could have focused more on bands like Rush, Three Days Grace, Journey, etc. LEGO?!?!? i've lost faith in humanity because of this

I am honestly looking forward to this game - more so now that I've read this interview. Kinda sounds like its going to be similar to Elite Beat Agents in pure background AWESOME!

I will definitely play this game, but unsure about buying it just yet. I've already preordered The Beatles: Rock Band, so maybe after I get 1000 (or close to) in that, I'll get Lego Rock Band. I'll buy it if they announce some songs I really like though.

I think this game will be terrible. LEGO did ok with starwars then went a little too far with Batman and Indiana Jones. This is just overkill on an already boring idea.

"We’re making LEGO Rock Band because Rock Band is the best party game ever made"

What a pretentious jackass. If this was my interview, it would have ended there as I punched him in the face. But if not that, I probably would have walked off when he explained "super easy mode." Why not just let the game play itself?

Tbh I think this is just trying to get even more money from LEGO games.

Star Wars, Batman, Indy are good for co-op and work well with their drop in/drop out system.
They were funny too.

But I don't get the point in this if it's just to brand it as LEGO and make it lego characters.
I don't know how they can transport it well to this type of game.

I mean really, who pays attention to what your character is doing in the background when you're thinking of what to press/hit next.
Of course they are saying family, so I doubt this would be as large an issue if you do it on easy.

I think that's that rant over.

Super Easy? The Final Countdown? LEGO?

You can't be serious.

Sunday, June 14, 2009 @ 08:13:31 PM

Is there really a big market for this game? Seems like they're diluting the brand to me and doing a cheap cash in. Let's not forget that Rock Band censored the word "goddamn" repeatedly in a song. Rock Band is already pretty family friendly. The super easy mode sounds like it's for the under 10 crowd, and how many people in that group care about the songs being offered?

Sunday, June 14, 2009 @ 08:29:35 PM

Now people can say Rock Band copied Guitar Hero's "Beginner" mode instead of GH coping RB for whatever...

The setlist just killed it for me. If it had just been legos but with normal rock songs i probably would have bought it. But when they put pop shit in there there is no way in hell I will buy it. If I have to hear pink's "so what" one more time im gonna explode. Rock Bands is selling out and that pisses me off.

#3 hit the nail on the head. Otherwise it'll be good for a rental. And I gotta agree with #2 on Indiana Jones. Just started playing it today, and was hoping for as much fun as Batman was. I'm being sorely disappointed.

ITS THE ROCK BAND FRANCHISE!!!! They are just adding that LEGO twist! I mean come on, there can't be new additions to the Rock Band name, but they can make numerous, been there, done that, Halo games?!?!?!

What I'd like to point out is the fact that, as #32 said, the game is still Rock Band. Don't get all pissy because the game isn't what you want it to be. It's made for families, and it draws children into the music field (if the other music games didn't already), so it completes its objective. Just because LEGO is tagged onto this Rock Band title, it doesn't mean it will play any different. And so what if there's a "Super Easy" mode? Does that not branch from the goal of pulling in the children and older men/women who have lost all dexterity in their fingers due to age? Quit whining about the damn title and background, and just enjoy the damn music. If this appeals to you because it's LEGO, good for you. I hope you enjoy it. If not, let it be.

I really hope the songs are exportable, because I am fairly attached to my band in Rock Band 2.

Also, I'm afraid that I don't see the humour in the Lego games.

"Look! It's computer generated Lego that you CAN'T build into whatever you want AND it's been transplanted into mediocre game engine. BUT IT'S LEGO! HI-effing-LARIOUS!"

Seriously, buy a pack of lego and play Castle Crashers - money better spent.

And while I'm at it - Rock Band was a pretty terrible party game for one. If you hadn't played through on single player, you didn't have all the songs unlocked, so you had pretty slim pickings for your party, with people having to play through what can only be described as dross.

And let's be realistic - 60% of every music game will be dross to someone out there.

And

39 wins.

I'm a hard core RB fan, and I can't figure out what to make of this game. I guess that whether I buy it or not will depend on if the songs are exportable, and what is on the setlist. So far, I'm not real excited about the announced songs. I'm way more excited for RB: Beatles, and even GH5 than I am for this game.

I hate pop... Apart from the fact that this game is going to be LEGO-stylish, the list of song, I assume, will be all pop, hip-hoppy music, and I REALLY hate that kind of music. Money well spent someplace else...

You won't have to worry about Disney songs. HMX is owned by MTV, which owns Nickelodeon, Disney's competitor. We're safe from Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers.

Anyways, if this is exportable, I'll get it. More songs for me.

agree with comment 47, and i think this will be pretty good. i love the lego humour, and doing it while playing a music game like rock band will be so fun! i mean the challenges sound exciting, the different places you can play in, the customization, the humour, and destroying buildings.

I really don't think this is gonna do 'that' great, but I think the only reason that this game might be bought is because little kids like legos and they most likely never heard of the Beatles (which is gonna be SUUUPPPEEER awsome!!!)

Monday, June 15, 2009 @ 02:17:45 PM

Eh. I'm going to get it. Lots of LEGO franchises tend to do at least fairly well, and I presume tons of kids will buy this. LEGOs are one of my all time favorite childhood toys, and seeing it mix with one of my favorite modern games is just pretty awesome to see.

Right so this has songs some of you don't like...Well then it's not for you then is it? God just cos you don't like the game doesn't mean others don't. I have taken a more interest in this game due to this interview....
Thanks for putting it up!

I hate these games because every time one comes out that's all you hear on the radio. I swear I've heard Smashing Pumpkins "today" and their 2 or 3 other songs in GH and RB about 100 times now, I want to hear more good music damn it, not the stuff I already play in a video game! (highway star is another one played way to often).

for all the hate about super easy mode...some people are just plain awful, my sister can hardly sing in tune or play guitar or drums on easy, i don't know how we're related. no fail mode is pretty much the only way i can play with her, my family will love this. the only thing they have to do is make it compatible with all the other rock band stuff
