I think part of the problem with Halo 3: ODST’s build up until now has been that Bungie came out the gates calling it a “value orientated” title when clearly that isn’t the case and now it’s kind of back fired on them. Ever since Microsoft announced the price hitch at E3, a select group of people have become a little dismayed holding the belief that the price is intentionally hitched because it’s Halo, but that’s partly Bungie’s fault anyway by building up preconceived notions that it was in fact a budget title. In the same way that Left 4 Dead 2 is a fully blown sequel, Halo 3: ODST is a fully blown spin-off and boasting just as much, if not more value.

ODST is essentially a multi branching game with many different aspects of the title to get stuck in to. Yes, it will be 2 discs and the second disc will offer all 21 Halo 3 maps to-date with 3 new ODST maps added in as well. The first disc however is likely to get all the attention and will offer you access to the ODST campaign, a “horde” like survival mode called Firefight and of course, access to the Halo: Reach Beta when that goes live, whenever that maybe.

The ODST campaign is nothing like you’ll ever have experienced in the Halo universe. Gone is the over powering and indestructible Master Chief, and instead we play a slightly weaker rookie ODST member who seems to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Separated from the rest of his squadron and 6 hours after the initial drop, the rookie will awaken in the large, mysterious city all alone. From there you're faced with the task of having to work out what happened to the rest of your squad by doing detective work and piecing together all the information you stumbles upon from around the city.

The campaign has a very mysterious vibe to it, offering two different styles of play. On the one hand we have the sandbox aspect of the title and that takes place in the big open-world New Mombassa at night. Seeing as you’re not Master Chief, you’ll be more vulnerable and can’t expect a shield that recharges after every fire fight. Instead, you’ll have to contend with a multi-layered health system, with players able to take a small amount of damage via a regenerative stamina bar but after that runs out, the damage you're taking will eat away at the player’s non regenerative health. If you find yourself running low on health, you’ll have to navigate the city and find a health station. This new, “I’m not invincible” gameplay mechanic definitely adds a more strategic and tactical element to the title; two words that are rarely associated with the franchise.

During the night-time sandbox aspect of the title, the rookie can rely on the help of a local AI, the Superintendant, who will attempt to help you round the city and starts by giving you a map of it. Seeing as this aspect is non-linear, the map is essential to your objectives and allows you to zoom out, plan your route and set waypoints. It also adds points of interest on there as well. The city is pretty damn huge and players can expect to spend a lot of time exploring. Of course it isn’t all puppy dogs and exploration, you’re likely to encounter Brutes and Grunts on your journey so beware, just don’t expect to see Elites though. Under the cover of night and as your vulnerable rookie self, you can make use of ODST’s new weapons as well. The sound suppressed SMG and pistol come in handy when you want to make a mess in the city without so much as a sound; again adding to the strategic and tactical elements of the title.

Being an ODST trooper, you’ll also have access to a special ODST Visor which has a low lighting vision mode and can detect local enemies. When in the line of sight, the local enemies will have a red outline around them making it easier for you to pick them out of the relatively dusk environments. It will also highlight items of interest as well, which acts as a path way into the second aspect of the game; the flashbacks.

Whilst the rookie is wandering the streets of New Mombassa he’ll come across items that his, now vanished, crew members had dropped. Picking up these items throws the rookie into a flashback from the missing ODST squad members' timeline, effectively telling the story of events that happened to them after they crashed on the surface of the planet. A great story mechanic and one we’ve rarely seen in games in general, yet alone in the Halo universe. The first flashback Creative Director Joseph Staton runs us through is the flashback of Dutch; the heavy weapons specialist of the squad, starting the proceedings off by blowing up a bridge. This aspect of the game takes place not under the cover of night, but in the broad daylight and looks to fill the rookie in on the six hours he has spent away from his squadron. So the two themes of the game are apparent; the night-time scenes are stealth and exploration orientated, with the daytime scenes being more combat and objective orientated.

Just a quick word on Firefight before we close up here. Firefight is a 4 player co-op “horde” style mode where you and your squad take on wave after wave of the Covenant trying to last as long as possible and trying to net as many points as you can. There isn’t a set wave on this either with Staten calling them “endless” but he did note that the 4 players share a common pool of 7 lives which is an interesting take.

Chances are Halobot’s are going to pick up ODST anyway regardless of the press it gets from now until release and whatever cost it comes in at ... and damn straight they should. Halo 3: ODST offers what seems like a much richer experience with more variety than any Master Chief adventure could possibly offer you. We tried to squeeze a few details out of Staten regarding campaign length but the closest we could get to a definitive answer was that it would feature a “nice, long campaign.” Close but no cigar. Either way, Halo 3: ODST definitely seems to add more than enough content to warrant its full retail price and we’re hoping the campaign lasts double figures in terms of hours. And if it doesn’t, 3 new maps and Firefight should go a long way into helping improve the longevity of the title.

Halo 3: ODST will be available exclusively on the Xbox 360 from this coming September 22nd.

	Sounds great, so glad this is being fully realized into a separate game. The Firefight is sound more and more interesting as i hear about it, MUCH better than horde and not as much of a grind as what you would think.

	Firefight sounds cool, campaign is shaping up good and multiplayer is....... multiplayer. Hoping for lots of campaign and firefight achievements. I'd bet anyone who paid for Halo 3 Map Packs are pissed cuz us who are getting ODST are getting em fer free

	2 discs eh? I see a trend starting with newer improved games coming out. I'm not one to complain about disc swapping, but this one surprised me a little (unless the maps are downloadable to your hard drive, making the 2nd disc "somewhat" one time use.

	@7. Since it is a 2 disc game though, I am willing to bet good money the campaign is another 1000GS and the 2nd is "linked" to the original Halo 3 achievements.

	I personally cannot wait for ODST to drop, for the simple fact that I want to know more about the "darker" Halo spin and how it plays out. It seems more serious and deeper. Can't wait to see the achievement list, and I'm hoping it has limited to no multiplayer achievements.

	Noone's going to play as johnson. It's nowhere near as cool a pre-order bonus as a gold hammerburst. This game's going to be awesome. Of course it's going to have 1000gs, that's like wondering if cars: mater-national was going to have 1000gs...

	I have zero interest in this game and in a perfect world it would bomb. Most dedicated multiplayer players will have bought almost all the maps on Disc 2 anyways, so what's the point?

	Eh, just another Halo title. Everybody says it's so different than the others, but really, they just tweaked the health system and gave you silenced weapons. Considering you can still take incredible amounts of enemies head-on, I'm not really seeing this "new, “I’m not invincible” gameplay mechanic". I'll pass, maybe rent if I have nothing better to do. I think it's about time the Halo series died, as it should have ended at 3.

	If there are multiplayer achievements, I will kill somebody. But good news is I think it will only be for campaign and horde.. I mean "Firefight." Mainly because the new maps are for Halo 3 and they already have those MP achievements layed out.

	Now I wonder how much will they charge. I remember bungie said it wouldn't be a full game, which means they wouldn't charge $60, but not with all this added stuff then what? Hm..we'll have to see I guess.

	@19 true. Also, remember the fact that you're actually about a meter shorter than a spartan, not even noticeable on the gameplay. Grunts should be as tall as you. And just taking on a brute head-on solo seems a bit too heroïc for a normal paratrooper

	If it's Halo, I'll get it! I've been a fan of this series since Halo CE on the Original Xbox, I'm happy it's still being made because I don't see why it should stop at three. I think it's a great game. Call me a fanboy, but I like to play games that I enjoy, is that a crime?

	@14 think about what your saying me... they may have thought about it before it was put in gears, but wouldn't gears have thought about it way before the end product? i use to be like you but with gears, made halo sound horrible and praise gears as much as i could... now i think first... gears 2 pretty much destroyed gears even though now after 3-4title updates it is a good game but only GOOD... i mean still in my opinion gears 1 is the best game on the 360 because of what it achieved whereas halo has had its franchise years before halo 3... but like gears, it only takes one game to ruin a franchise... Just as a note... i reaaly like halo and will be geting this

	From the sounds of it I already have ODST Disk 2. Most of us do. It's called Halo 3. Unless I'm misunderstanding something, they didn't make a new adversarial setup. When you put Disk 2 of ODST into your 360 you'll end up in the exact same spot you do now if you go to Multiplayer on Halo 3. The only difference is that Disk 2 of ODST will have three extra maps. Since we're not getting anything new in adversarial, is this new campaign really going to be worth $60? I doubt it.

	It would be worth the £40 price tag if I didn't own 18 of the Halo 3 maps already. I'm still buying it regardless and to be honest the Halo Reach beta makes up for it. I can't wait to see what Bungie have done.

	I am one of the people who actually like multiplayer achievements. You can tell from my gamerscore that I dont care that much for achievements but I find only sinlge player achievements pretty boring. On topic, I will get this game day one! And sinse the entire singleplayer is on a seperate disk then the multyplayer, hopefully their will be more roo for a long campaing. I wish they put firefight on the multiplayer disk. I dont have a problem with switching disks but , well I'v never played a game were I need to switch disks and I assume you go back to the dashboard like regular games so If they put it on the multiplayer disk, I could play firefight with my friends then jums strait to multiplayer. Regardless I'l buy it!

	I have one question. Seeing as their are achievements in this tied to the regular Halo 3, such as finding all of the map pack skulls, will their achievements be connected and total in 2750 GS? That's been bothering me...

	Sounds like the health system shouldn't be anything new to players who have been around since Halo 1. Although it sounds like there is more non-regenerative health in this game it still has the same idea with the stamina bar ("shield") and the health that goes down after that. This kinda frustrated me with the first game but I dont think I will mind as much in this one because it isn't the Master Chief so limited health is warranted

	I love Horde in Gears 2. I love Nazi Zombies in CoD:WaW. Now Firefight in Halo? Awesome! I hope my friends will play this too! As for multiplayer, are we able to link our Halo 3 multiplayer accounts to ODST? Maybe they should add some more maps, because only 3 new maps might be a little cheap. Nonetheless, Bungie makes great maps (except Isolation, always will hate that map) and I will get this game. Also, what is Halo: Reach? I asked ppl, but their descriptions sucked.

	@50 I remember reading some were that you can link your account and even play with people on halo 3. I might be wrong but I hope not. The 3 maps I think are the remainder of the mythic map pack. they said it would have 6 maps and the rest would be on ODST. As for your Reach question, go see the trailer. No one knows anything about it. They ANNOUNCED it at e3 but thats all they did. Show a teaer and thats it. I havn't read any of th halo books yet but I reach is one of them(?). People were talking about it and they said its their second biggest military base, after earth. There will also be a beta for Reach with ODST. Hope I helped!

	The Halo 2 and 3 single player were absolutely terrible, so I really hope that this is better. I don't know why I am so easily sold on science fiction combat stuff, but I am. The sad truth is that I will actually probably get this at some point. I just don't know why.

	Halo: Reach will be a FPS, and is the prequel to Halo:CE. It is essentially "Halo 4" without the "4" involved. And "Horde" modes have been around for a long time, I know them as "Survival" modes for the most part. Halo 2 had a skull in it, that would trigger such a "mode" during campaign. Long before GoW came out.

	sorry for all the posts, but when I said their biggest military base outside of earth, I'm just telling you what I read from people talking about the book afer seeing the trailer. It might (and prob will by looking at the name) have something to do with the book.

	This game looks the terrible. The whole point of being an ODST is that you're part of a squad and would make it so much different from Halo. Why on EARTH have they put you on your own??? It's seriously just gonna feel like Halo and not a spin-off. I'm avoiding this. Peace

	@52 Reach is part of the Halo books, it is called "The Fall of Reach." It is an amazing book, I would advise anyone who likes sci-fi to read the halo series. The ODST 2nd disc will be linked to the Halo 3 multiplayer, and yes it will be like you put in the Halo disc and clicked matchmaking. I definitely will get this and the Firefight mode was not stolen from GOW2, in fact I believe it has been around since Doom, or something like that.

	Halo sucks. Its gettin old and now they are doing the samething as other games that make money, adding filler stories and prequels and all that other shit. Halo 3 was only 6 hours long, way to short for a $60 price tag and that turns me off to games. Halo ODST is no different, a full $60 for only 3-5 hours worth of gameplay?! To put it in perspective Fallout 3's DLC is the same length for only $10. A name doesn't sell a game for me, nor does graphics. I want a game thats going to last me a good 12 hours atleast, like it was in the old days. Ill wait for a much better combat game called Modern Warfare 2 thanks. Halo ODST=One Damn Shitty Title!

	@67: Everyone has a right to comment, deal with it. As for the game, I actually expected more of this, it's just not worth it for a full $60 price. The change to make it a bit more stealth-y was pretty sweet, but seriously, like 2-5 hours of gameplay, not to mention Firefight sounds like Gears of War to me (now they both copied their ideas~), I would rather play Gears in that matter. And the multiplayer maps...well, people who bought them are pretty much screwed, those who didn't will really enjoy the second Disc. To sum it up, I'll probably end up buying this game after a year or two, when the price drops..it's just not worth it, for now.

	@69 - I think the campaign at last rumour was more like 6-10 hours and not 2-5.

	@25 LOL are your serious? You think all of the LIVE community visits this site? That poll is very questionable considering its been up a year and you can vote more than one time. The LIVE community is over 20 million people says MS. Most of those gamers don't care about single player campaigns or achievements they would rather play MP with other people than by themselves. Most of the people on this site want all their games like FN3 or Avatar, 1000gs in very fast.

	I was under the impression that the 2nd disc would just install the MP halo3 maps to your hard drive. Like the Shivering Isles disc did on the oblivion GOTY edition.

	@58and you know this beacuse... oh thats right, its already out! @64 its not another copy of halo 3. there will be no campaign in that disk. It will be the multiplayer part(not fire fight) and will include all the halo 3 maps (on disk and dlc) and the 3 remaining maps for the mythic map pack. FYI to veryone, your not screwed if you got all the map packs. the heroic and ledgendary ones came out a long time ago so its not like you were gonna wait a year or 2 just to get the maps for free and if you think you got screwed for gettin the mythic map pack, then your also wrong cause you wouldnt have been able to enjoy it this whole time.

	I don't know what the big deal is with MP achievements. I hate them. I don't know I guess it's because when I was born all we had we're single player on the Nes, Super Nintendo, etc... Unless you hooked up with your friends. Today if a game doesn't have a good SP I won't play it. Even if the MP was the greatest thing in the world I wouldn't touch it. I enjoy Halo's SP a lot and it's MP and my Matchmaking record would prove that. MP achievements are usually just annoying numbers of kills or certain weapon kills. They just suck. On another note ODST is looking nice. And to all you Halo haters just stop typing. Halo is a good game and it's still a good game. Bungie has not lost their touch.

	BigDog you've added nothing to this in both of your postss and @ #17 DONT UNDERESTIMATE JOHNSON! I think that its definitly worth the price, People have this notion that you are getting the the maps for free, well on marketplace you are paying for them so maybe with the disc your paying for them. You're AT LEAST spending $10 on the remaining maps . Not to mention more than two types of multiplayer, a full blown campaign. I suppose you could blame bungie but only because they let people think it was some 10$ marketplace rag.

	To answer the several questions that have been asked regarding the two disks ODST is being shipped with. Disk 1 contains the Halo:ODST Campaign and Firefight. Disk 2 contains the Halo 3 online multiplayer and all the maps up to the release date, the maps originally shipped with Halo 3 and ALL dlc maps. When playing these they will add achievements to your halo 3 GS as it is considered the Halo 3 Multiplayer. Disk 1 will be the core 1000gs of ODST i believe. Though it could go the way of linking to the Halo 3 game somehow. Who knows till the achievements get leaked?

	Looks better than other Halo games. May check it out. I quit playing Halo 3 after getting the achievements. Didn't like the color palette. Gameplay is smooth and polished. Story wasn't interesting to me. ODST may have a grittier, more compelling story.

	Wait wait wait... You're telling me ODST will feature a long campaign? An expansion featuring a campaign longer than the core game's campaign?! Pretty cool, but far fetched. I wouldn't be surprised if this game drops as "Halo: ODST" instead of "Halo 3: ODST". It's certainly making itself out to be longer, more content-packed than Halo 3 ever was.

	I understand it's anyones right to post here, but for all the Halo-Haters it seems rather pointless to post on a topic that you clearly do not care for. 	Is it just me or is every company trying to copy Gears 2's horde mode? CoD WaW's Nazi Zombies, Left 4 Dead Survival mode and now Halo 3: ODST Firefight. Who could blame them it one of my favorite aspects of those games. Will be hard to beat CoD WaW's Nazi Zombies though.

	i like that Bungie is branching out with a "new story and characters". I must say though that the E3 trailer made the ODST guys sounds like bags of douche. Oh well, I'll still play the game no matter how fruity they sound. I'm looking forward to some firefight though. I love 4 player co-op modes.

	@ #37 I guess this whole wave thing could be inspired by T-hunt but u have to remember that T-hunt did not have waves of enemies it had a set number of enemies that you had to kill. Gears, Halo, and Rainbow six are all great games though

	Rainbow six T-Hunt is not like horde. T-Hunt got a certain number of ennemies you have to kill , in horde mode you kill wave of ennemie and trying to last the most longer possible.

	I like that they dropped the shield aspect and added a bit of strategy to taking on enemies, and the free-roam is a nice addition when compared to the linear quality of the other Halo titles. Shows much promise and I can't wait to behold its wonderment. Why don't they just call it ODST?

	Bungie is full of supprises, i mean back in 2001 Halo CE, no one said nothin about the flood, we all thought Halo 3 was the last FPS halo game, then 25/09/08 (Halo 3's B-Day) Bungie then says that ODST will be the last game, Now at E3 09 here comes Reach, will this be the last one or will there be more to come... (PLEASE BE MORE!)
