Minor Release Date Slip for FUEL ... But It Breaks a World Record

Codemasters today told VG247 that FUEL is suffering an unfortunate release date slip ... of a week. Instead, those wishing to get their off-road fix will have to wait till June 5th in Europe. No word whether that week delay applies worldwide, but we'd be surprised if it didn't.

In other, slightly more jolly news, FUEL was crowned by the Guiness World Records this week as officially having the "largest playable area in a console game" for its "5,560 square miles (14,400 km²)" playing surface.

"We knew FUEL was going to be big,” said Phil Wright, Producer, Codemasters, “but to have this confirmed officially by Guinness World Records justifies our faith in this ground-breaking title. No other game comes close to offering the variety of environments, the range of vehicles or the sheer size of FUEL. It’s one of the most innovative racers ever, and we’re thrilled it’s been recognised as the biggest console game of all time."

To celebrate this momentus occasion, Codemasters today released a tech demo where a couple of the designers from Asobo discuss the vast world they've created.

all well and good having a massive playable area but if there's loads of dead space it's hardly an achievement, will have to wait and see

Largest playing surface? Bull. The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, had 62,394 square miles of playable surface (larger than the total area of England). Granted, most of it was randomly generated, but that doesn't change the fact that Fuel doesn't surpass that.

They have actually delayed the game again Webb, it's now the 12th of June for the UK.

Damn man it sounds great and all, but why cant they have this sort of playable area in an RPG??? Like Fallout or personally for me Elder Scrolls!! it would be immense and a beautiful spectacle of a gaming world! Pleaseeeeee! lol.

Interesting, I'll download the demo when/if available.

Ps. In the end of the video there were three box arts and if you watch precisely you'll notice the PC game is "Games for Windows" and has that "LIVE" tag in it.

That said, FUEL will have PC achievements as well.

@19 Consoles play more off the disk then PC games do. PC Games rely more on the hard disk, RAM and then finally the disk. They also have a more powerful processor, to handle the graphics, dedicated graphics card etc. So many reasons why a PC is CAPABLE of making worlds BIGGER then any console game, They could always go and make Oblivion on the xbox that big, but would you like 10 minute loading time between all towns? I dont think I would.
